How to minimize Firefox memory usage

I've been using mozilla software for a very long time, but lately memory usage in firefox has been getting far too out of hand. I used to be able to have hundreds of pages open without using too much memory, but for some time now I have only been able to have a fraction of the number of pages open before hitting the same levels of memory use. A new firefox session I opened today hit 600 megabytes of memory after loading 7 pages. Earlier today, firefox was collectively using over 20 *gigabytes* of memory. This is all for firefox itself, which is set up without any extra plugins beyond the basic ones for flash, java, and audio/video. Sometimes I've gone to using elinks for some of my "main" browsing just to avoid the extra memory bloat, but I would much rather use a more complete browser when I don't need to browse through a ssh tunnel.
When I purchased 16 gigabytes of memory for my computer, I did not expect all of it plus some to be used just by my internet browser, so I need to know how to cut firefox's memory usage as much as possible. I care next to nothing about caching, especially since I already have a caching proxy anyway (squid 3). I just need firefox to not end up leading me to a newegg page for an additional 16 gigabytes of memory. What can I do to alleviate this issue?

Hi,
These two links might help
*https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-uses-too-much-memory-ram
*https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-uses-too-many-cpu-resources-how-fix
Firefox has hardware acceleration set to "on" by default, but it's still young, which means some video cards or drivers might have problems with it. You can try to disable hardware acceleration to see if that alleviates your problems.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps for Firefox version 29.0 and above:
*Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and select {menu Options} for Windows or {menu Preferences} on Mac or Linux. For Firefox 28.0 and previous versions, click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window, click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
* [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
* [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]

  • MS Minimize and memory usage

    Hi,
    I noticed that if you minimize your dos window, your memory usage ( as shown in Windows task manager ) drops a lot. E.g. I have Tomcat running ( 15 MB usage ). When I minimize the Tomcat DOS window, the memory usage shows something like 160kB. Any ideas. What is the real usage ?
    Regards,
    Dieter Janssen

    When you minimize the window Java will run a garbage collection. But also be aware of that the memory usage in Windows task manager is shown in both the Mem Usage column and the VM Size column (you maybe need to add this to your Task manager).
    I hope this will help you!

  • How to specify maximum memory usage for Java VM in Tomcat?

    Does any one know how to setup memory usage for Java VM, such as "-Xmx256m" parameter, in Tomcat?
    I'm using Tomcat 3.x in Apache web server on Sun Solaris platform. I already tried to add the following line into tomcat.properties, like:
    wrapper.bin.parameters=-Xmx512m
    However, it seems to me that this doesn't work. So, how about if my servlet will consume a large amount of memory that exceeds the default 64M memory boundary of Java VM?
    Any idea will be appreciated.
    Haohua

    With some help we found the fix. You have to set the -Xms and -Xmx at installation time when you install Tomcat 4.x as a service. Services do not read system variables. Go to the command prompt in windows, and in the directory where tomcat.exe resides, type "tomcat.exe /?". You will see jvm_options as part of the installation. Put the -Xms and -Xmx variables in the proper place during the install and it will work.
    If you can't uninstall and reinstall, you can apply this registry hack that dfortae sent to me on another thread.
    =-=-=-=-=-=
    You can change the parameters in the Windows registry. If your service name is "Apache Tomcat" The location is:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Apache Tomcat\Parameters
    Change the JVM Option Count value to the new value with the number of parameters it will now have. In my case, I added two parameters -Xms100m and -Xmx256m and it was 3 before so I bumped it to 5.
    Then I created two more String values. I called the first one I added 'JVM Option Number 4' and the second 'JVM Option Number 5'. Then I set the value inside each. The first one I set to '-Xms100m' and the second I set to '-Xmx256m'. Then I restarted Tomcat and observed when I did big processing the memory limit was now 256 MB, so it worked. Hope this helps!
    =-=-=-=-=
    I tried this and it worked. I did not want to have to go through the whole reinstallation process, so this was best for me.
    Thanks to all who helped on this.

  • S.o.s. how to set a memory usage limit in flash cs4?

    flash is using 1 200 000 k. and i cant work in this situation. i know that i can limit the usage of memory in ps cs4. but i dont know how i do it in flash. is there a way of limiting the memory usage or making flash use memory as much as this?

    Thats all my poblems!!!
    I used File Monitors from Sysinternals and I see, that Flash operated with C:\xalan\xercesImpl.jar (on my system), and can't find C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash CS4\META-INF\services\org.apache.xerces.xni.parser.XMLParserConfiguration  and others...
    I temporary remove xalan - well - thats all - CS4 successfully compile, test, check codes !!!
    1) Adobe CS4 used Xerces Apache (and configurated himself, without us)
    2) Use Sysinternals to detect other file-problems
    On my machine Flash 8, CS3, CS4 - for adjusting project compatibility.

    i've read i can disable the kernel modules that i don't need to improve the memory usage.
    which modules i can disable without "kill my system"?. i don't want SATA, DVD, bluray, infrared, floppys, bluetooth, usb3.0, 3d video card, dial-up-integrated modem, ntfs, 'cause mi old is so old. i want it only for the university.
    thanks in advantage for the tips, and sorry if someone can't understand very well that i wanna tell you, english isn't my "mother languaje".

    thanks for the answers. yes, i have a 1 gb of swap.
    i think i can reduce the memory usage of the system if i dissable the kernel modules that i don't use. but, the question is: what modules is safe to disable to get it?
    thanks in advantage

  • How to monitor java memory usage in enterprise manager

    I am running sqlplus to execute a sql package, which generates XML.
    When processing 2000+ rows, it will give a out of memory error.
    Where in enterprise manger can I see this memory usage?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    it depends a little on what you want to do. If you use the pure CCMS monitoring with the table ALTRAMONI you get average response time per instance and you only get new measurements once the status changes from green to yellow or red.
    In order to get continuous measurements you should look into Business Process Monitoring and the different documentations under https://service.sap.com/bpm --> Media Libary --> Technical Information. E.g. the PDF Setup Guide for Application Monitoring describes this "newer" dialog performance monitor. Probably you have to click on the calendar sheet in the Media Libary to also see older documents as well. As the Business Process Monitoring integrates with BW (there is also a BI Setup Guide in the Media LIbrary) you can get trendlines there. This BW integration also integrates back with SL Reporting.
    Some guidance for SL Reporting is probably given under https://service.sap.com/rkt-solman but I am not 100% sure.
    Best Regards
    Volker

  • How to fix the memory usage of Ely`s FlexBook is insanely increasing when turn page that contains large images?

    Hi,
         I am using flexbook for newspaper project. We have lots of huge size images in our app,all more than 1 MB. I use SuperImage as flexbook content,I also noticed that the application was using huge amounts of memory and crashed IE6, IE7,IE8 and Firefox. I found that flexbook updateDisplayList method call many times and each time flexbookpage call copyInto method when turg page,this cause memory growing. And memory not released when call commitProperties method.
    I would really appriciate any help because I have no clue how to fix it.(我的英语不好,但是我真的很着急。)
    See my partial code below how I am using the flexbook.
         //从后台Java代码得到报纸页面集合
         var list_pages: ArrayCollection = event.result as ArrayCollection;
         pageList = list_pages.toArray();
         //显示右侧报纸版面列表
         getPageListDisp();
         //画布擦除所有子元素
         can.removeAllChildren();
         //创建FlexBook
         var book:FlexBook =new FlexBook();
         book.height=0.9*h;
         book.width=0.8*w;
        //FlexBook需要配置的属性
         book.itemSize="halfPage";
         book.animateCurrentPageIndex=false;
         book.animatePagesOnTurn=false;
         book.setStyle("edgeAndCornerSize",120);//翻动的页脚大小
         book.setStyle("activeGrabArea",1);//把翻动的范围设置为页边
         book.scaleX=sldrb.value;//设置book的放大比例
         book.scaleY=sldrb.value;
        var con:Array = book.content;//为book添加报纸版面
        con.push(new Image());
         for(var i:int=0;i<pageList.length;i++){
         var img:Image=new Image();
         img.source=pageList[i].pageBigImgUrl;
         img.maintainAspectRatio=true;
         con.push(img);
        book.content = con;
         can.addChild(book);
    <mx:Panel id="test1" width="80%" height="100%" horizontalScrollPolicy="off" verticalScrollPolicy="off" paddingTop="15" paddingBottom="15">
        <mx:Canvas id="can" scaleX="{sldrb.value}" scaleY="{sldrb.value}" click="MouseEventFunc(event)" borderColor="#8EC7EF" backgroundColor="#FFFFFF" horizontalScrollPolicy="off" verticalScrollPolicy="off" alpha="1.0" buttonMode="true" mouseDown="MouseEventFunc(event)" mouseUp="MouseEventFunc(event)">
          </mx:Canvas>
       </mx:Panel>

    Or you could include a width to your body style:
    body {
    background-image: url(Logo/sky1.jpg);
    background-position: center center;
    background-attachment: fixed;
    width: 75%;}
    It might work or not depending on your other color scheme.

    Hi All,
    We want to know how to find out current native momory utilization for a perticular weblogic domain. Basically we want to increase our current JVM heap size from 2 GB to 3.5GB because of 32 bit JDK restriction we are not having confident to increase at the memont. If we can get the current native memory utization then we will have a idea how to pregess and change in production env.

    Weblogic - 9.2
    Java - 1.5

    We want to know how to find out current native momory utilization for a perticular weblogic domainMemory is per process. Weblogic, the server, is one process (one VM.) Thus you can't increase the application memory for only part of it. I doubt weblogic has a way to limit it by app.

  • How to minimize OC4J memory footprint?

    We use Oracle 9iAS R2 on a Windows 2K server with dual Xenons and 2 GB physical RAM as an integration server. There the various developers all have differenct OC4Js set up for testing. Now an Oracle rep once told us that many OC4Js within an iAS instance are no big deal because an OC4J had a memory footprint of about 3 MB RAM.
    That sounded too good to be true. And in our case, is isn't true - an OC4J takes up about 50 MB of RAM right after its start. I tried to minimize the Java heap through the OC4J server attbributes in Oracle Enterprise Manager (like "-Xms16") but that didn't make an ounce of a difference.
    So what's the memory footprint of an OC4J inside an iAS instance? And can I reduce it somehow?

    This must be a marketing gag. Client Swing Apps tend to consume more than 3MB.
    I'm not sure but I guess the iAS is the memory eater. We currently have a test installation on a Solaris machine and the iAS pages up to 3GB when accessing the enterprise manager web site. Have a look into the performance guide and try to switch off all unecessary things. Note that there are to different VM switches: -Xms configures the initial heap size a VM should have (growing is expensive) be whereas -Xmx configures the max size the heap can grow (wheares 64MB is default). Again the documenation says that 2MB is then min (not much availabe for OC4J).
    I've you found it - please tell me! :-)

  • How to decrease the memory usage??

    hi
    iam new to java programmning.
    I have developed a project using swings.
    It is like an IDE to the user where he can create some applications
    PROBLEM:After creating some 100 applications it is becoming very slow.
    The flow is:
    1) Intially launches the JtabbedPane with some panes in it
    2) User fills all the details and then clicks on save
    3) it saves the application and then prompts the user to create one more application if the user clicks on "yes"
    iam doing a cleanup process here that is just assigning all the created objects to null and reinitialising again(acc to requirement)
    If the user clicks on "no" just do a cleanup process and removes all the pane from the jtabbedpane
    The memory always increases but doesnt decrease...
    can anyone suggest..
    thanks in advance

    There's almost never a reason to call System.gc(), and
    there's never a guarantee that it will do anything at
    all. It suggests to the VM that now might be a good
    time to run gc, but the VM is free to do whatever it
    wants with that suggestion, including ignore it.If you look at it that way then there's probably almost never a reason to use advisory file locks either. It's not a strongly enforced policy but it has it's uses all the same.
    True, there is no guarantee that it will work but it is in effect a kick aimed at the VM to tell it that maybe some garbage collection would be a good idea.
    If you are working with a program that uses large amounts of memory then calling the garbage collector at certain points can help quite a great deal. Have a look at this example:
    http://www.devdaily.com/java/edu/pj/pj010008/index.shtml
    I agree that watching your references is the way to ensure that objects are scrapped properly. Many classes dont have the convenience of cleanup methods so this can be one of the only ways. You can also check out the java.lang.ref package for further means to interact with the garbage collector.

  • How to minimize memory usage with VM settings

    Using JDK 1.4.2, I am trying to minimize the memory usage of my application.
    Our GUI application consumes about ~20MB of heap space during normal operation, but it can easily grow to 50MB in some rare cases (Special feature accessed by user).
    We have to be able to run multiple instances (separate process/VMs) of this application on low end Windows PCs.
    The applications don't usually run for very long (less than 8 hours).
    Here is my problem.
    If I set the -Xms=20M -Xmx=64M, it works fine, but the GC is not very aggressive and soon, the application starts using a lot of memory, even if it is not really needed. And it never returns the memory to Windows OS.
    So each VM take more memory than really needed, which causes significant swapping on these low end PC (little RAM available).
    If I reduce the -Xmx flag, than I run out of memory in the rare cases where I need the full memory.
    Ideally, I would like to configure the GC to be more aggressive, i.e. the GC should collect instead of getting additional memory from the OS when possible.
    I read a few papers on Sun's web site about HotSpot tunning, but most of them are geared for large servers.
    Thanks!
    Francois

    And you are using the task manager to determine how "much" memory is being used correct?
    I suggest that you search out and read the numerous threads on this site that discuss that subject.

  • Extremely high memory usage after upgrading to Firefox 12

    After I upgraded to Firefox 12, I began frequently experiencing Firefox memory usage ballooning extremely high (2-3GB after a few minutes of light browsing). Sometimes it will drop back down to a more reasonable level (a few hundred MB), sometimes it hangs (presumably while trying to garbage collect everything), and sometimes it crashes. Usually the crashing thread cannot be determined, but when it can be, it is in the garbage collection code ( [https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/list?signature=js%3A%3Agc%3A%3AMarkChildren%28JSTracer*%2C+js%3A%3Atypes%3A%3ATypeObject*%29] ).
    I was able to capture an about:memory report when Firefox had gotten to about 1.5 GB and have attached an image.
    A couple of things I've tried. I have lots of tabs open (though the Don't load tabs until selected option is enabled), so I copied my profile, kept all my extensions enabled, but closed all my tabs. I then left a page open to http://news.google.com/ and it ran fine for several days, whereas my original profile crashes multiple times a day.
    I also tried disabling most of my extensions, leaving the following extensions that I refuse to browse without:
    Adblock Plus
    BetterPrivacy
    NoScript
    PasswordMaker
    Perspectives
    Priv3
    However, the problem still happened in that case.
    Don't know if any of this helps or not. I'm looking forward to trying Firefox 13 when it comes out.

    hello, thanks for reporting back with detailed information.
    from a brief look at your extensions i don't recognize any known (to me at least) memory leaking ones. in the last weeks there were also reports about the java plugin causing high memory consumption in combination with firefox 12 - in case you have it installed in firefox > addons > plugins try disabling it for a few days & test how firefox is behaving with many tabs.
    & although probably not related to the memory problems you could update your graphics driver to get better results with hardware acceleration in firefox - this is the latest driver by intel for your model & os:

  • Firefox 21.0 on OS X 10.8.4 still has a memory leak that occurs with no Add ons, 1 tab and leads to 3GB of memory usage in 10 minutes.

    While using Firefox 21.0 on OS X 10.8.4 with 4GB RAM, Firefox memory usage marches up and up until at 3GB (on my iMac) Firefox hangs and is 100% non-responsive and must be killed with Force Quit. It takes 10 minutes to occur.
    No Add Ons
    One tab

    John99,
    Unfortunately, the problem was WORSE in FF 22.0. I regressed to FF21.0 and shut off automatic updates. I may even go back to FF3.6, which is the last one where I didn't see this problem.
    Thank you for trying but as a longstanding developer I know that pervasive memory leaks is a sign of a broken development process. Thank you for trying...

  • Nested tables and memory usage (ORA-04030 error)

    Dear All,
    I have table with approximately 5,000,000 records
    and try to Bulk Collect part of it into nested table in PL/SQL, the code is bellow
    Declare
         Type TcardRec Is Record(
              serno Pls_Integer,
              numberx Char(16),
              caccserno Pls_Integer
         Type TcardList Is Table Of TcardRec;
         fcardInfo TcardList;
    Begin
    Select c.serno, substr(c.numberx,1,16), c.caccserno
    Bulk Collect Into fcardinfo
    From cardx c;
    End;
    After reading approx. 80% it fails with error
    ORA-04030: out of process memory when trying to allocate 16396 bytes (koh-kghu call ,pmucalm coll)
    I 2G memory, is it realy no enough?
    How can I tune memory usage for collection?
    How can I estimate the maximum size of the collection the will fit into memory?
    Thank you in advance for any help
    Artem

    Declare it as a cursor.
    Open the cursor.
    Use fetch bulk collect with the limit option in the loop.
    In your case, you could do like:
    Declare
    Cursor c1 is
    Select c.serno, substr(c.numberx,1,16), c.caccserno
    From cardx c;
    TcardList Is Table Of c1%rowtype;
    fcardInfo TcardList;
    Begin
    Open c1;
    Loop
    Fetch c1 Bulk Collect Into fcardInfo Limit 10000;
    Exit when c1%notfound;
    -- Do some processing here.
    End Loop;
    Close c1;
    End;
    I hope this helps.
