How to practically store data on a separate drive

i am re-organizing after a move to mac and decided to move all my data to a raid array while keeping my OS's on a separate drive.
i am seeing that this is more difficult in practice than it sounds.
for instance, i have all sorts of folders such as Music or Screenshots or Pictures or Movies etc, etc, etc and i am wondering if I should just keep ALL of this dat on the separate drive and RE-POINT all my software that uses a database to that folder on the other drive.

How can I store data in CompactFlash in a PCI 7041?

I have built an application for RT control in a PCI 7041 that executes the main loop at 5 kHz, so cycle time is 200 us. Now I want to save some data generated during execution. I would like to register timestamp and three values per cycle so I'd have four values every 200 us.
I think that the best way to do this is to store data in the CompactFlash memory included in PCI 7041 in real time (one "row" per cycle), and then, after RT loop execution (it lasts about 2 seconds), download all data to Host's hard disk.
How can I do this? How can I access CompactFlash from Labview? Is there a better way to solve my problem?

The 7041's CompactFlash is accessible as a drive (C through LabVIEW's file I/O functions. You can open/create/replace files on the 7041, just as you would on the host by calling file I/O functions in your downloaded VI.
Once the data is on C:, FTP to the 7041 from the host to retrieve your files. You can FTP programmatically in LabVIEW if you have the internet toolkit. If you don't have the internet toolkit, you can use System Exec to run your FTP commands.
If you prefer not to use FTP, you can transfer the data via TCP, UDP, or Datasocket, but that will require some additional programming.

Windows backup is of course useless. But you should already know that. It will not work on any version less than pro anyway.. due to MS deciding people with home versions should never use networks. ???
That is why there is one million and one third party backup software that do work with network drives. Look up reviews of what works well. for the price you want to pay and get it.. Drive Image was a popular one. I must have a copy somewhere I bought .. then changed to Mac..
There are plenty of free ones.. I do use macrium reflect.. does disk image only unless you pay the license.. but works super well.. particular for restore.. which people kind of forget.. the value of backup is how well does it restore.
Use ethernet if possible.
Note that mixing TM and data on the TC is not necessarily a great idea if you are also running Macs.

Well, you could encrypt the data when you write it, and decrypt it when you read it back.

How do I restore data from recovered hard drive?

In a nutshell-
Hard drive failed. We had it replaced, and recovered data from old hard drive, put it on an external hard drive. Now we want to put that data onto the new hard drive.
Is it as simple as dragging it over?
We're missing most of the software that came with our computer when we first bought it. We can't find the software installation disk, but we do see application icons from the recovered data. We do have the Software disk from a Mac mini. Can we use this disk? It seems like there has to be a way to get the software we had before the crash without paying to have it done.

You cannot use the discs from a Mac Mini--you have to have the exact discs for your iBook G4. These discs are very machine specific.
That said, you can try bringing over the various applications from your external drive. The only potential problem is that because the old drive failed, there could be some software corruption.
If you can locate your original discs and install the software from them, that would be ideal. If you can't, you can get replacement discs from Apple for a fee.
As for the data, you should be able to just drag it over.

How to properly recover data from "broken" hard drive?

I have a mid 2012 Mountain Lion MacBook Pro. My hard drive recently failed. As I have been working in Thailand, I decided to bring my laptop an Authorized Service Provider (Macintosh Center Co., Ltd.) in Bangkok. Their diagnostic was that my hard drive wasnt working anymore, and I had to change it. The problem is, since I had no backup, I asked them to recover my data and transfer to the new hard drive. But, this Apple Authorized Service Provider told me I had to go somewherelse because they have no software to recover my data! So, I went to the local Joe's repair computer store who retrieved my data from the problematic hard drive to the new one. Now, the problem is that all my "old" data is located in "orphan folders". In other words, counteless files were retrieved without folders and settings.
So, I would like to know if it is possible to recover my data with all the settings I had and then transfer it to my new hard drive. If it's possible, what software should I use to properly recover my data? If it's not possible, how should I deal with the "orphan folders" and my current settings?

First stop using your system, then get a copy of a program that will recover files like Data Rescue 3. If you have a time machine backup you may be able to restore them.

I got the Time Capsule a couple days ago and have been backing up my Macbook pro's data. I have an old Lacie 160G external hard drive with data I'd like to put into the time capsule. The only way it can do that now seems like I have to transfer the data from the Lacie to my mac ...then backs it up automatically to the Time Capsule.
However, my 256G of space on my mac is about to be full !
The time machine automatically puts my Lacie hard drive as excluded from being backed up and the button - (to remove it) doesn't work when an external hard drive is connected to the Macbook. Right now, my trust in the time capsule is not superb. I've tried intentionally to delete a video file on my Macbook and then see if I could retrieve it . I've had one fail/error and one success. Since one failed I have not dared to delete anything.
So..the plan is to delete files on my Macbook and then import data from my Lacie to my Macbook...and pray the time capsule will save everything?
Can anyone with experience tell me how to use the time capsule correctly?

The TM should be able to include the LaCie if it is formatted HFS+. If it isn't then no .. TM cannot backup.
On Yosemite the simple fact is TM is working poorly.. we are awaiting a patch or 6 to fix some of the issues.. but it is being extra flakey.
This is just a very personal opinion but I purchased Carbon Copy Cloner a couple of years ago.. very good purchase.. Easy to use.. reliable.. can backup network drives and disks that are not HFS+ formatted.. plus it can make a bootable clone.. It can backup separately your internal drive and your external drive to different sparsebundles on the TC.. I reckon for $40.. it is well worth it.
Otherwise you are stuck with the Yosemite / TM bugs.. good luck with those..
And more so the fact that TM is simply limited in its ability.
At least create a disk image on the TC and copy manually the files from the external drive into it. You do not need to copy the files to the Mac to do this..
But I think I would be buying another decent sized external drive.. 160GB drives.. sounds ancient..

How should I partition data across 2 hard drives to make for less latencey?

Hello all!
I am using a Dual 2.7 G5 Power Mac and I just bought the Hitachi 500GB internal hard drive to supplement the stock 250GB drive that came in the tower. I mostly want to orient my computer for the needs of a home recording studio. I am Logic Pro user and I want to streamline data retrieval as efficiently as possible.
Now, I also have a good deal of other junk on my computer (video and iMovie projects). I would love an organization solution on how to partition everything that I have filled my 250GB drive up with across both hard drives. I'm aiming for a solution that will be good for the long-term as I continue to add more and more stuff (audio/music related and non) onto my hard drives.
Here are a few of the primary concerns which have held me back from just diving in:
I have several DVD's worth of audio samples (for use with software sampler) that I have yet to load onto this computer. Should I load/move all of my samples onto the secondary 500GB drive or would the streaming retrieval of all of that content from the secondary drive add extra latency and slowdown when the host application running these tasks and retrievals is ran off of the primary drive (the 250GB drive on which the OS is installed)?
Or should I just move Logic to the secondary 500 GB drive as well as all of the audio samples and run all things having to do with audio production off of that secondary 500GB drive? Would running such a CPU intensive app from the secondary drive make a performance difference compared to running it off of the primary drive? Does it matter whether or not a program is run off of the hard drive where the OS is installed?
Or should I find a way to have all apps running from the primary 250 GB drive WITH all samples (streaming and non-streaming) also on that drive and just have my project files and audio recording sessions (which eat up large portions of space) located on the secondary 500 GB drive? Or would I run into a noticeable latency with having the recorded audio sessions ran off of the secondary hard drive when I am running the application that retrieves them (Logic) off of the primary drive?
Where do I put my pro apps? Where do I put my audio samples (mainly for EXS24, SampleTank, and BFD)? Recording sessions? Everything else?
Please, experienced users, what should I do to garner the best performance out of my Mac?

In general, no. If your harddrive is partitioned and you are streaming from both the BFD partition and your own tracks, this will lead to the hard drive read head jumping back and forth between the two partitions, which may reduce performance. Also, if you are streaming non-BFD audio from the same drive, this reduces the bandwidth available for BFD streaming.

FXpansion recommends, in order of performance preference (first is best):
1) A dedicated SATA or IDE internal drive, 7200rpm or above
2) A dedicated external firewire drive (do NOT chain the firewire drive with a digi002 or other firewire audio interfaces!)
3) A dedicated external USB2.0 drive
4) An internal drive shared with the data from other heavy disk-accessing programs, eg the operating system (virtual memory swap files), or another disk streaming application such as your host sequencer (audio tracks) or Kontact etc etc.

So it sounds like they recommend BFD having its very own hard drive. I dont have the resources for that right now. So I wonder what would be better: Sharing the OS drive with BFD as mentioned by X and used as the last resort from FAQ #2, or split my second drive via partition into Samples (including BFD audio) and Storage for projects and raw, recorded audio sessions.

I used to have a WIndows PC, than I finally joined Apple Family and Iam pretty happy.
But today I tried to get some data from an old WD Passport Hard Drive and Time Machine immidately tried to backup itself on it.
Before I understood time machine startet to backup on my hard drive and everything I had on it before was gone.
What to do?

In order for Time Machine to back up to a HDD, it must be formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in Disk Utility. Formatting will erase all user data on that HDD. Time Machine will only delete TM data on a HDD that may have other data on it (non TM data).
If you formatted that WD HDD for use with Time Machine, all data that was on it is gone. If you put data on the WD HDD after formatting, it still should be there.
