How to run and compile a java servlet on Tomcat?

Hi, I am very new to servlets in Tomact.
I went to the java tutorial and from the address below I copy an example (SimpleServlet).I try to run and compile it in Tomcat, But I don't know how can I do that. I appreciate if somebody tell me the command line for compiling and running this example and the necassary steps. (My Tomcat is installed perfactly).

I have the similar question.
Instead of going thru sun's tutorial, I tried onjava's ("http://www.onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2001/04/19/tomcat.html?page=1").
I could see the jsp page, but when I tried to add a servlet, I got an error "Page not found". I followed exactly the same way they describe. The only thing I noticed was the resulting page on the tutorial had the URL of ".../servlet/...".
Is this "servlet" directory something we are supposed to create our own? If so, under what directory? Or do we need to set up anything in order for the servlet to be referenced that way?

1.Jar file
2.War file
And then put them into an ear file

I wander how to find and install right java for ECC6 intstallation on AIX5.3. I went thruroughly thru note 723909 and underlying 716927, 1008311 and 1039948 notes but I still do not understand.
I guess I should logon to IBM site http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/aix/service.html
where I can choose :
" Java 1.4.2 64-bit "
and then :
"64-bit SDK 1.4.2 base images (at 1.4.2.0 level; in installp format) "->"Base SDK (required)
Java14_64.sdk.tar ((50001920)
then I assume (on AIX ) I should "tar xvf Java14_64.sdk.tar".
then I get extracted "Java14_64.sdk"
Is this ok?
I know on Linux(
from IBM site I downloaded "IBMJava2-amd64-142.rpm"
then I issued
"rpm -i IBMJava2-amd64-142.rpm "
and finally issued
"export JAVA_HOME=/opt/IBMJava2-amd64-142")
What in case of AIX5.3? Could you help me?

lol, theres 4 i believe, that come standard with java. Only problem is, you can't use them all. The Windows one can only be used on windows, the mac on mac. Metal is the default, and theres Motif. So technically, depending on your OS, thers 2 or 3. You can also download Look and Feels, theres tons out there, most want you to pay however. You can also write your own.

I have Java code (freeware, not opensoure), intended for Unix, which basically provides the graphical interface and relies on an I/O layer (C + shell scripts) to do most of the work. I have access to the C+shell scripts which are opensource. I ported it to Cygwin and want to use it under Windows (there is no Cygwin native Java VM).
My problem now boils down to " how to run commands under Unix and what differences are there with Windows". What are the variants?
I have to guess what the program is doing when I get an IOException at some point. E.g.: a call to shell script may be made in a different way as to a compiled exe in Unix?. I found a way to bypass path problems because forward slashes are also accepted and /cygdrive/c construct can be replace by c:/; shell scripts can be compiled into exes using shc and they work; if symbolic links are replaced by duplication of exe files, they work. What will happen in an instance whereby a process runs a shell script dynamically, through a pipe (the shell script is compiled in the Cygwin/win version and receives parameters) in a construct like:
pipefp = epopen(cmdbuf,"w"); /* (cmbuf is "makehdr par1 par2 ... ") (makehdr was a shell script and is now compiled exe for Cygwin/Windows) */?.

First things first.
Do you know how to compile a simple hello word program, get it to compile, and run it in jbuilder? Do you know how to do other basic programming tasks (ignoring iADF for now) in the IDE? If not, you need to concentrate on how to use jbuilder before messing with Oracle ADF (Oracle Application Development Framework). Alternately, if you are very familiar with another IDE such as Eclipse, you can look at ADF plugins for it instead (if they exist). If you are not familiar with Java, its supporing technologies, and an IDE very well, I suggest you drop ADF and work on simpler architectures because ADF is way, way too advanced for you at this time. Instead, spend your time reading books on Java, etc from cover to cover and working through a number of their examples instead.
Assuming you are an experienced programmer and plan to go ahead with ADF, I suggest you go to amazon.com and order a book on ADF that has good reviews. Read it from cover to cover and work through a number of the book's examples. You should start out with a very very simple ADF project before attempting something more complicated, then build on it. If you are not familiar with some of the components of ADF such as JSF, I suggest you create a few simple projects using them in isolation before combining them all under ADF.

Also worth having a look at SVG http://www.w3.org/TR/2001/REC-SVG-20010904/, you can get a viewer at http://www.adobe.com/svg/ or you can use Batik http://xml.apache.org/batik/index.html to convert SVG to other formats such as JPEG.

How to Run a Compiled Component

I am sooo new to JAVA. I bought a book (O'Reilly) to learn Java. I loaded the JAVA complier and the JAVA run time (1.5). I also loaded an IDE called Eclipse. I tried to run some of their example code, but it wouldn't work - this is the error I got "The project was not built since its build path is incomplete. Cannot find the class file for java.lang.Enum. Fix the build path then try building this project     LearningJava               August 11, 2006 4:16:35 PM"
So I tried to use the command line to run basic JAVA. I have a simple program from the book - "HelloJava". I got it to compile with javac command, but when I go to "run" this with the java command, this is the message that I receive
"Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:" which kind of sounds like I am missing something - same as with Eclipse message above.
I have reloaded everything two times - what can I be doing wrong.
This is supposed to be simple? But I can't even get the sample programs to run. Here is the sample program I did get to compile:

remove the CLASSPATH setting which might have been set by
Eclipse or other tools.
on windows platform before compiling and running from the command
prompt give the command
SET CLASSPATH=
to clear any CLASSPATH setting.

i compile using
