I'm switching over to Mac from PC, and have an external NTSF formated hard drive I regularly use. I understand from the forum the initial file transfer should be no issue, but for ongoing use of the HD, does it need to be formated to something other than NTSF... and if so, to what and how.

Do this when you're ready:

1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

How do i move photos to external hard drive for use with iphoto 11

My hard drive is full. I have a Lacie 3 TB external formatted for Mac Journaled. I want to keep my photos and other iPhoto 11 media on the external. Should I just move the iPhoto library to the external or some other way? For iTunes, I moved the iTune media folder location and copied my existing iTunes media folder over and deleted the old after telling iTune to go to the external drive folder.
I don't want to point iPhoto to the new location every time I open it. Any better way or just move the iPhoto library?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

I am trying to gather all of my music into one place, but it is scattered throughout my computer and external hard drive, how can I put it all in one folder and then create one library off of it?

My first problem is that I need to get all of my music files in one folder, they are scattered throughout my computer and external hard drive and I am trying to get them all together. Afterwards I want to send this music to my microsd hard in my Samsung Galaxy s4, is there a way to proceed through this? Or at least one part of it?

Consolidate your iTunes Library
As for the other part of the question, iTunes syncs with Apple devices.
Simply copy the media desired from the computer to the microSD card. This has nothing to do with iTunes.

Next you'll be in setup assistant,
If the external drive is a TimeMachine drive you can restore, your done.
If TM is corrupt your screwed and need to perform data recovery options. Stop.
If the external drive is a clone, hold the option key and boot from it, setup the internal drive and reverse clone.
or
If the external drive a clone then set the new machine up with either the same or a different user name depending if the clone is good or bad.
Use the same name if the clone is bad, install your programs from fresh sources on the new drive, transfer files manually from the bad clone.
Use a setup different name if the clone is good, use Utilities > Migration Assistant program on the clone drive to transfer everything over.
You can use a same name with a good clone and chose to reinstall programs fresh and just transfer files you want from the good clone.
If the external drive a storage drive (just files) then set the machine up with the same user name as before and transfer files manually.

I keep my iTunes library on an external hard drive and ran it through my Dell. Then the Dell developed the "blue screen of death" and I lost everything. Thankfully my library is still on the hard drive (and on the iPod) but I had to re-install iTunes on my (new) computer. I changed the iTunes location to be my external hard drive but the library hasn't automatically updated. I'm scared to sync my iPod for fear that things will get deleted. What to do! Thanks!

You need to add the folder with the music back to iTunes. (iTunes File -> Add folder to library).
iTunes does not look in the folder you point it to and check if there is new music in it.

All you need to do is…
1) Connect the drive
2) Launch Disk Utility
3) Select the drive and go to the partition tab
4) Click on Options… and chenge it from MBR to GUID Partition Table
5) Create a partition using MacOS Journalled
6) Apply the change and you should have a Mac drive

I have a G5 iMac that the hard drive crashed. I have replaced the hard drive and now trying to install the 10.5.8 dmd image back from a external hard drive since I don't have a disk. I have not been able to figure how to boot up and install this way.

I have a 17" MacBook Pro and do lots of movie editing. I need a fast external hard drive option to use. My internal is totally used up. Also need a back up drive.
I am a newbie and all of my info is based on googling. My FIRST QUESTION: Can I, and would it be a good solution, to use an express card 34 such as, Sonnet Tempo or Firtek SeriTek/2sM2-E with an external hard drive such as SeaGate 500GB or 300GB.
QUESTION 2: Why do so many of the SATA hard drives come without a case or enclosure?
And QUESTION 3: Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with the express card/34 and SATA external hard drives.

1. Yes, eSATA would be a good choice for an external enclosure with a SATA drive. Alternatively, you could use Firewire 800, but it's mostly a matter of choice.
2. SATA drives a primarily used in desktop machines. SATA capable enclosures have made them usable outside of desktops.
3. I can tell you from experience to get an enclosure with a good chipset. It makes all the difference in the world. Oxford is very good for firewire. Cypress AT2+ and Prolific 3507 are excellent for USB 2.0.

Any make and model of any size will work. But if yoyu plan on using it for both Windows and Mac OS X it needs to be formatted FAT32 or exFAT.

Reformating external hard drive for use with new MacBook Pro

I'm trying to figure out how to use an existing external hard drive (formatted for a Powermac G4) with my new MacBook Pro. I understand that the file formats are different and that I need to erase the hard drive and reformat it with a GUID partition, but how does one do that?
I've already erased the drive with disk utility (using the old Powermac) and connected it to my MacBook with the hope that it would be recognized. No dice, alas. It doesn't mount at all.
Any suggestions on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My external harddrives all work just fine with the MacBook Pro. You shouldn't have to reformat anything. I think if you did then it would not be backwards compatable with the older systems. Stick it back in your old computer and try to mount it again, repair permissions shutdown your macbook pro and connect the external drive then reboot

Quiet external hard drive for use with Time Machine?

Few questions related to Time Machine:
1- what external hard drive that would be good to use with Time Machine, that also runs relatively quietly? Since TM runs 24/7, am looking for one that is quieter than my current G-tech.
2- Please confirm what size is optimal relative to the size of the internal hard drive.
3- I currently use a separate external hard drive as my bootable disc. Is it possible/preferable to have these be on one and the same drive?

2. You should allow 2 - 3 times your internal drive's size for TM.
3. No, it'd be best to be on another drive - you can create separate partitions, but if/when the drive fails, both of your backups would be gone. So, keep your clone on a separate disk. In fact, it's good to have two different backups.
