Suppose i have a table and no field in it is a primary key like this
create table t1
(a number not null,
b number);
Later i want to make a as primary key then how to do that?
I tried with this statement but it gave error
alter table t1
modify a primary key;

I see, you want autogenerated constraint name (I hate that feature). What version are you on? It works on my 10.2.0.4.0:
SQL> create table t1
2 (a number not null,
3 b number);
Table created.
SQL> alter table t1
2 modify a primary key;
Table altered.
SQL> SY.

Alternatively, assuming you want to ensure uniqueness in your primary key column you can do this:
alter table <table name> add constraint <cons name> primary key (col1,col2) exceptions into <exception_table>
If the altter table statement fails this will populate the EXCEPTIONS table with the rows that contain duplicate values for (col1,col2).
You will need to run (or get a DBA to run) a script called UTLEXCPT.SQL (which will be in the $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin directory) if you don't already have an EXCEPTIONS table.

Given the following scenario :
Given an inputfield, the user can enter a table name. The code behind will base on the table name given and extract out the fieldname of the primary key and concatenate the two field to become a unique string.
Eg. Order ID and Product ID make out a primary key.
How do i achieve that? Any code sample?

Knowing the primary key columns of the given table

You can find the constraint_name from all_constraints/user_constraints for constraint_type = 'P' (which is the primary key constraint).
And then see which columns are in for the constriant_name
in all_cons_columns/user_cons_columns view.
Below is the example
select acc.column_name from
all_cons_columns acc, all_constraints ac
where acc.constraint_name = ac.constraint_name
and acc.table_name = 'DEPT' AND acc.owner = 'SCOTT'
and ac.constraint_type = 'P'

How to Work with Composite Primary Key

I'm working with Toplink JPA. Here I have A problem with inserting into database table which have composite Primary Key.
What I'm doing is, I have two tables. to maintain many to many relation between these two tables I created another intermediate table which consists of foreign Keys (reference) of above two tables.
Now these two foreign Keys in the Intermediate table made as composite Primary Keys.
When I'm trying to the data in the Intermediate table I'm getting the foreign Keys values are null..
could anyone suggest me how to work with composite Primary Keys

I have the same problem, I have 3 tables with a join table joining them all. I have created an intermediate table entity. When I go to create a an entry, it says that I cannot enter null into "ID". Here is the SQl toplink generates:

I have tried to create the new entity several ways. I have tried to create one with the default constructor then set this entity on each of the other entities, I have also tried to pass in the entities to the join entity and set them there, but this doesn't work. Any help would be very appreciated!

you can define the primary key when you create table
or add the primary key after the table creation by 'ALTER TABLE ... ADD constraint pk_nme primary key (col1, col2)';
you could use below sql to check the detail of primary key:
1) check out the table definition directly:
select dbms_metadata.get_ddl('TABLE','EMP') FROM DUAL;
2) check out the columns of primary key:
select * from user_constraints where constraint_type='P' AND table_NAME='EMP';
select * from user_cons_columns where CONSTRAINT_NAME='PK_EMP';And BTW, it is madam, not sir. :)

Views don't have primary keys though their underlying tables might. You'd need to pick apart the view to determine where it's columns are coming from.
You can select the text of the view in question from user_views.

If you have database 10g, look into function REGEXP_REPLACE. Otherwise you can also try this (you might already know).

For the component 'ICCMP_EMP_SRCH' there is a view 'BUPAEMPSEARCH' , which has 2 context nodes 'CUSTOMER' AND 'SEARCHEMPLOYEE' , i need to add the field 'NICKNAME' which is part of the 'CUSTOMER' context node on the search screen. Currrently all the fields on the screen screen are from the 'SEARCHEMPLOYEE' context node. when i did the configuration , the 'NICKNAME' field is greyed out . I have already generated the Getter ,Setter , GET_I, GET_M methods for the 'NICKNAME' field and the context node and controller class and context class are all active .
on debugging the GET_I method, i see that rv_disabled = 'TRUE' and the current = collection_wrapper->get_current( ) is returning empty value .
for this rv_disabled to be set false , the code below is not triggered since there is no value in current.

I would have expected all constraint violations to be logged to exceptions. I was not able to find any documentation describing the behavior I describe above.

it's also possible to take the code from ebitar and use the expression within styleClass instead of inlineStyle.
E.g. you can define a custom style "StyleClassEmptyText" in your skin and set this styleclass if af:inputtext is empty.
By using style classes you can have the same style in the whole application and you are able to change this style on a single point(in the styleclass) for the whole application.

I have a strange behaviour with my Entity bean. I am trying to make an update of an entity bean through a session bean, and it works only for primary keys inferior to a precise number (maybe 1700).
Otherwise the update throws the following error :
javax.ejb.NoSuchEntityException: [EJB:010142]Instance of EJB 'VEtHr' with primary key '1999' does not exist.
Do you have any idea about the problem ?

The problem is strange because before trying the update method of EJB, I am trying to get the full line by the id (getByPrimaryKey). And it works. I get all data for primary key =5002 for example.
But when I try to update it, I get this message :
