How to set my character coding to 'Western ISO-8859-1' permanently?

I am having a REALLY annoying problem here. I want to set my character encoding to 'Western ISO-8859-1' permanently. I am able to successfully change it for a while but a couple of minutes barely pass and it reverts back to 'Unicode', even if I am on the same page and idle. I need immediate help here, as I am not able to do an urgent task that requires my encoding to be set at 'Western'.

Go to Tools -> Options, click on the tab Content. In the group "Fonts & Colours" click the button Advanced. In the windows that pops up, set the Default Character Encoding to Western (ISO-8859-1).

  • Website not displaying correctly. Firefox is changing the character set to Western (ISO-8859-1) automatically.

Normally I have set Firefox (or it's set by default) to Character Set Unicode (UTF-8) and everything displays perfectly. I've never had a problem before.
Now however, whenever I upload my own website, for some bizarre reason on that particular tab (and only that tab) the Character Set is changed over to Western (ISO-8859-1) and then there's a few characters within my site that do not display correctly, namely apostrophes and hypens.
It definitely isn't my software (Serif WebPlus X4) because the page displays correctly in every other browser. Plus it displays correctly in Firefox if I change the Character set back to Unicode.
PS The site is a work in progress

That happens because the server sends a content-type (<b>text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1</b>) via the HTTP response headers and in that case that content type prevails. The page code is saved with an UTF-8 byte order mark () that you see in this case.

  • Western iso 8859-1 character set is gone, "other (including Western" does not work. Why did you take it out?

Some websites need Western ISO 8859-1 character set to run properly and you have taken it away in favour of "other(including Western)", now the site does not work properly. Why did you take it out and can you please put it back.

ISO-8859-1 and Windows-1252 should be equivalent. Can you provide an example of a page that doesn't display properly?
If you have to manually select a character encoding to view the page correctly, then the site is broken and you should notify its owner that it needs be fixed. Websites specify the character encoding in one of two ways:

  • How to set NLS character set for report 9i servlet output?

    Hi,
I am running a Reports 9i report. My problem is that the output HTML file is UTF8 encoded while ALL my 9iASR2 registry setting are set to EEISO8859P2. When I issued the http://&lt;host:port&gt;/reports/rwservlet/showenv?server=servername command it returned that the NLS setting is UTF8.
Can somebody please help me, how to set this environment variable for the report servlet to EE..P1? Thank you in advance.
    Regards,
    Tamas Szecsy

    Dmitry,
recently I got this from Oracle support. :-(. Currently when I set the Windows 2000 local and default local to Hungarian and the charset to EE..P2 then I get Central-European encoded charset. I think you will have to experience around to get correct result (if it is possible at all).

This is bug Number 2472932 NLS:RWSERVLET SETS INVALID CHARSET AT THE HTTP HEADER
marked as fixed in 9.0.2.2 . unfortunately this bug is not published so I will not be able to sent you the bug as a whole but here is problem description in bug:
    iAS9.0.2.0.1 (Reports9.0.2.0.1) on Solaris2.8
Running rdf with rwservlet sends the invalid charset at the http header.
Say ias is up with LANG=C, http header for the rwservlet
is always sent as "iso-8859-1" regardless of rwserver's NLS_CHARACTERSET.
This is the TCP/IP packet for the GET /reports/rwservlet?report=xxx&....

In this example, to produce a html with other charset than
iso-8859-1,usually the outputted html has the charset information at
meta tag by setting "Before Report Value" property in rdf.
However charset in meta tag is less priority than http header, browser
such as IE6 or Netscape7 firstly displays the page in iso-8859-1.
Hence the characters other than iso8859p1 gets garbage.
To workaround it with IE6/NS7, set proper encoding manually.
    ('View'-'Encoding' for IE 'View'-'Character coding' for NS7 )
However, NS4.7 does not have workaround for it.
Besides, starting opmn in LANG=ja, the rwservlet's http header becomes
Shift_JIS!!. Thus rwserver seems to set the http header based on the
    LANG on Solaris.
    To fix these issues,
    - The http header for rwservlet shold be based on the nls_characterset
    for the rwserver.
This is no problem for reprots jsp run.

  • How to store UTF-8 characters in an iso-8859-1 encoded oracle database?

How can we store UTF-8 characters in an iso-8859-1 encoded oracle database? We can NOT change the database encoding but need to store e.g. Polish or Russian characters besides other European languages.
Is there any stable sollution with good performance?
We use Oracle 8.1.6 with iso-8859-1 encoding, Bea WebLogic 7.0, JDK 1.3.1 and the following thin driver: "Oracle JDBC Driver version - 9.0.2.0.0".

There are a couple of unsupported options, but I wouldn't consider using them on a production database running other critical applications. I would also strongly discourage their use unless you understand in detail how Oracle National Language Support (NLS) works, otherwise you could end up with corrupt data or worse.
In a sense, you've been asked to do the impossible. The existing databas echaracter sets do not support encoding the data you've been asked to store.
Can you create a new database with an appropriate database character set and deploy your application there? That's probably the easiest solution.
If that isn't an option, and you really need to store data in this database, you could use one of the binary data types (RAW and BLOB), but that would mean that it would be exceptionally difficult for applications other than yours to extract the data. You would have to ensure that the data was always encoded in the same character set, otherwise you wouldn't be able to properly decode it later. This would also add a lot of complexity to your application, since you couldn't send or recieve string data from the database.
Unfortunately, I suspect you will have to choose from a list of bad options.

I think the default encoding is set back to ISO8859 after customer download the dictionary.
Here is the reason: after 7.5.3, SPA 50x will parse the trkLocaleName in dictionary, for French it will set the phone’s default encoding to iso8859-1 since it is good to French.

It is a workaround, but it's strange why French user will use UTF8. Thanks.

  • How to set XML character encoding for a SOAP response?

    Hi,
We're using Oracle J2EE web services,
and are quite happy with them.
However, it's a problem that we need to have
characters outside the standard English alphabet
in our service responses. So far, we have not been
able to find a way to specify what encoding to use.
Our version (9.0.3 release) produces SOAP-responses
without any encoding specification in the XML header.

If you are using the "Paper Layout", check the Reports's "Before Report Value" property:

  • How to set the zoom out or in for all pages permanently?

I wish to set my page size one size smaller than the default.
The result of ctr - (zoom out) is exactly what I want (it decreases the size of text AND images). However this effect only lasts for the page I am currently on, as soon as I navigate to a different page (or just refresh the page I am at), it reverts back to the default size.
I looked at Tools->Options->Content, however that deals only with text size (besides it looks only certain pages are affected by this setting anyway).
In other words, how (or where) do I set my browser to automatically decrease size or 'Zoom Out' for all the pages I visit in order not to set it manually for every page every time.
    Regards
    PS.
If this setting can be applied for individual users (I have a multi user PC) that would be even better, although I would be very grateful if I could just set it.

  • How to Set my own Character Set in DBMS_LOB Package

    Hello All
    A Very Good Morning.
I am using DBMS_LOB.CONVERTTOCLOB To convert data in BLOB to CLOB.
My Database Character set is AL32UTF8.
I want to change that one to WE8ISO8859P15.
In DBMS_LOB.CONVERTTOCLOB package there is a parameter BLOB_CSID.
In the Documentation it is said that I can set this value to a desired Character set.
But the value should be of Integer Type.
How to set the Character Set conversion.
    Regards
    Madhu K

To get the id you looking for run:
select * from V$NLS_VALID_VALUES where parameter='CHARACTERSET';make sure your characterset is in there and then run:
select NLS_CHARSET_ID('WE8ISO8859P15') from dual; This is the id or number you want to pass into the DBMS_LOB.CONVERTTOCLOB.

  • How to change the character set?

Platform is win2000 and oracle 8.17. I need to write data in Bulragian. Automatic character converter in oracle didn't work! Database is created already!
Is there any function in pl/sql or Java that can convert character set in cl8mswin1251? When I read the data from database there are only ?????
    Thank you in advance!

I'm not sure what you're asking here. "Will it be ok" for what?
    Assuming
    - you read the chapter I linked to,
    - ran the character set scanner,
    - the character set scanner indicated that all your existing data is properly encoded ISO 8859-1
    - the character set scanner indicated that all the ISO 8859-1 data could be converted to Windows-1252
    - all the national character set data was properly encoded in whatever national character set the database had
    - you did the export properly
    - you did the import properly
    - your client NLS_LANG settings are all correct
then sure, everything should be OK.
If you skipped one of these steps, I would again strongly encourage you to read the chapter I linked to originally as well as the Metalink article others have pointed you to.

  • Setting connection character set

How to set connection character set when sending query from java program to MySQL database.
    I tried this:
String query  = "SET NAMES 'cp1250'";            /* character set */
                    stmt = conn.prepareStatement(query);
                    stmt.executeQuery();                   /*  I also tried stmt.execute();  */
                    query = "SELECT * FROM myTable";
                    stmt  = conn.prepareStatement(query);
                    rs    = stmt.executeQuery();but it doesn't work.
It works from MySQL command line client.

The easiest thing to do is to choose AL32UTF8 character set at database creation time because this character set allows to store any character from any supported character set: you don't need to change database character set at all. Please read Oracle doc. recommendation for AL32UTF8: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10595/create001.htm#ADMIN13343
National character set in only used by NCHAR, NVARCHAR2 and NCLOB data types and I recommend to use AL16UTF16 which is default value.

  • How to set or change character set for Oracle 10 XE

    Installing via RPM on Linux.
I need to have my database set to use UTF8 and WE8ISO8859P15 as the character set and national character set. (Think those are in the right order. If not, it's the opposite.)
If I do a standard "yum localinstall rpm-file-name," it installs Oracle. I then run the "/etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure" command to set my ports.
Every time I do this, I end up with AL32/AL16 character sets.
I finally hardcoded ISO-8859-15 as the Linux 'locale' character set and set this in the various bash profile config files. Now, I end up with WE8MSWIN1252 as the character set and AL16UTF16 as the national character set.
I've tried editing the createdb.sh script to hard code the character set types and then copied that file over the original while the RPM is still installing. I've tried editing the nls_lang.sh script to hard code the settings there and copied over the original shell script while the RPM is still installing.
    Doesn't matter.
HOW can I do this? If I wait until after the RPM is installed and try running the createdb.sh file, then it ends up creating a database but not doing everything properly. I end up missing pfiles or spfiles. Various errors crop up.
If I try to change them from the sql command line, I am told that the new character set must be a superset of the old one. It fails.
I'm new to Oracle, so I'm treading water that's uncharted. In short, I need community help. It's important to the app I'm running and attempting to migrate from to maintain these character sets.
    Thanks.

I don't think you can change Oracle XE character set. When downloading Oracle XE you must choose to download:
    - either the Universal Edition using AL32UTF8
    - or the Western Euopean Edition using WE8MSWIN1252.
    See http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/install.102/b25144/toc.htm#BABJACJJ
If you really need UTF8 instead of AL32UTF8 you need to use Oracle Standard Edition or Oracle Entreprise Edition:
these editions allow to select database character set at database creation time which is not really possible with Oracle XE
Note that changing environment variable NLS_LANG has nothing to do with changing database character set:

  • Oracle 11g Installation How to select Database Character Set

    Hi,
I am Installing oracle 11g R2. After installation I had verified the character set it was AL16UTF16 but I wants to set AL32UTF8 charater set at the time of oracle installation only. I can't see the character set setting opetion at the time of installation because I am selecting the installation option " Install database softerware only" and after installation of oracle software manually I am creating the database. Please help me how can I set the character set at the time of oracle installation or at the time of database creation.

How can I set the AL32UTF8 character set in above scenario?
