How to speed up a MDX Query

Hi
I have a MDX query that takes 30 seconds and I need to speed it up. Any suggestions ? Also any settings to change on the SSAS box ?
with
 set __XLSlice0 as { [Measures].[Summary Pct YearDiff QTD], [Measures].[Summary Pct YearDiff QTD Sailed] }
 set __XLExistingMembers as
NonEmpty(
[DateDimCreate].[AsYearQuarter].[AsYearQuarter].allmembers,
__XLSlice0)
 set __XLExistingRangeMembers as SubSet(__XLExistingMembers, 0, 1000)
 set __XLNonExistingRangeMembers as
Iif(__XLExistingRangeMembers.Count = 10000,
SubSet( Except([DateDimCreate].[AsYearQuarter].[AsYearQuarter].allmembers, __XLExistingMembers),
iif (0 - __XLExistingMembers.Count < 0, 0, 0 - __XLExistingMembers.Count),
1000 )
member [Measures].__XLRelated as Intersect( [DateDimCreate].[AsYearQuarter].currentmember, __XLExistingRangeMembers ).Count
 set __XLTargetSet as SubSet(Union(__XLExistingRangeMembers, __XLNonExistingRangeMembers), 0, 1000)
select { [Measures].__XLRelated } on 0,
__XLTargetSet on 1

Hi Javier,
According to your description, you want to optimize the performance of above query. Right?
In MDX query, please avoid run-time checks in an MDX calculation that result in a slow execution path to make the MDX more efficient. If you use the Case and IF functions to perform condition checks which must be resolved many times during query resolution,
you will have a slow execution path. Rewrite these queries using the SCOPE function to quickly reduce the calculation space to which an MDX calculation refers. Please refer to links below:

  • How to pass text in MDX query

    Hi All,
    I was wondering how to pass text in MDX query.
    Below mentioned is my sample query and it is working fine.
    SELECT
    {[Measures].members} ON AXIS(0),
    NON EMPTY [0MATERIAL].[LEVEL01].MEMBERS
    *[0DOC_NUMBER].[LEVEL01].MEMBERS ON AXIS(1)"
    FROM [$ZTEST]"
    WHERE {[0MATERIAL].[000012345]} ";
    But in data base 000012345 consists of material name as “ Pepsi “
    Now based on Pepsi I want to fetch results? Is it possible?
    Thanks in advance.

    Srinivas,
    So you are using JAVA, if you consult the developer's guide there is a section specifically addressing your question the ResultSet API should handle this via the formatted
    <b>Retrieving Result Sets
    ResultSet API</b>
    Note that the concept allows for more than two axes, however a two-dimensional, table-like data set makes the
    example easy to illustrate. On the columns axis, two members (“Store Cost” and ”Store Sales”) of the measures
    dimension have been selected; on the rows axis, three members (“Berlin,” ”Hamburg,” and ”Munich”) of the City level
    of a geographical hierarchy. The dataset has six cells:
    Cells provide four mandatory properties:
    • Value — supports all common column types, for example:
    o numeric types
    o dates
    o time values
    o strings
    o null
    • Data type — int value describing the data-type (see java.sql.Types)
    • Status — state of the cell (for example, error or null)
    <b>• Formatted value — a string representation of value</b>
    You can retrieve text in this manner.
    Do you want to be able to pass text as if it were a value as well?
    Cheers,
    Scott

  • How to get key from MDX Query

    Hi All,

    hi Jeiming,
    to get key in mdx, you can try something like
    [ZCOMPANY].[LEVEL01].MEMBERS

  • How to speed up SQL spatial query (spatial index error)

    Hi,
    Im trying to split polylines by points which have a small buffer around them. Currently i have over 370,000 lines and 320,000 nodes and the query is running really slowly (ive left it for 3 days and it still hasnt completed). I have tried forcing a spatial
    index using with (Index(SI_tempPD)) but i get the following error:
    "The query processor could not produce a query plan for a query with a spatial index hint. Reason: Could not find required binary spatial method in a condition. Try removing the index hints or removing SET FORCEPLAN."
    below is the snippet of code that im trying to run when i get the error:
    BEGIN INSERT INTO TempLines ( [linenum] ,[ogr_geometry] ) SELECT lines.[linenum] ,lines.[ogr_geometry].STDifference(points.[ogr_geometry].STBuffer(0.005)) AS ogr_geometry FROM dbo.TemplineData AS lines with(Index(SI_tempPD)) INNER JOIN dbo.[TemplineNodes] AS points ON lines.[ogr_geometry].STIntersection(points.[ogr_geometry]).STDistance(points.[ogr_geometry]) < 1 WHERE (lines.[linenum] <> points.[linenum]) END
     is there anyway i can speed up the query? (I also have a clustered primary key) the execution plan shows that a filter takes up 36% of the cost and the insert takes up 64%
    Any help would be greatly appreciated! (im using SQL Server 2008 (SQL server Management studio 10.50.1600.1))

    SQL Server spatial indexes don't support STDifference or STIntersection, see
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb895373(v=SQL.105).aspx, which is why you get the error.
    Your query is doing multiple expensive spatial operations against some fairly good-size tables in a join. You might get better results by either breaking the query into multiple simpler queries (SELECT into a temporary table and move the STDifference and
    STBuffer and INSERT off to a separate statement), and (if possible) rearchitecting the query to use STIntersects (which does support spatial index) rather than STIntersection.
    Hope this helps, Bob

  • How to compare MoM using MDX Query

    Hello,
    I have a cube which I want to use  to compare MoM.
    Example:
    Start Date : Jan 1 2015
    End Date : Jan 31 2015
    compare again Dec 1 2014 and Dec 31 2014
    Report will look like like:
                              Sales
                              Jan 1 - Jan 31 2015            Dec 1 - Dec 31 2014     Variance              % Variance
    Product A               100                                       200
         -100
    Product B                50                                         40
                10
    Wondering how this can be achieved SSAS.

    Hello,
    Thanks for the reply. I is surely helpful but here is the next challenge I have in this:
    Just to give a run down, let's say user want to run a data for following date and want multiple comparison based on the date:
    For example date entered by user is Jan 14, 2015 and he want to see the data
    Jan 01 - Jan 14th  for the MTD For Jan 2015
    Dec 01 - Dec 14th for previous month
    Oct 16 2014 to Jan 14 2015 (previous 90 days from Jan 14 2015)
    Sep 15 2014 to Dec 14 2014 (previous 90 days from last date of previous month which is Dec 14th in this case)
    Just wondering if this kind of date range can be calculated on fly to get the data.
    Thanks,

  • How to get the child data in MDX query?

    I have an MDX query that will return the data for an OLAP report. These report data include the parent_id, child_id and some dimensions data in it. How do I modify the MDX query to have a New member to show a dimension value of the child_id.
    The child_is is actually the parent_id on another row. It is the "Pstpd Decision" I want to be included in a new column using the "Appeal Id". Thanks

    data.
    Kahlua

    I got it to work by adding the child_id's "decison' to the fact table as it is alot easier to get that data using Sql Script while creating the fact table and also there is already a "decsion" dimension setup. In the cube I can select the
    parent_id's decision and/or child_id's decision. It is working on the report. Thanks.

  • How MDX query will work while we run BOXIR3 query!

    Hi All,
    I am facing lots peformance issues in terms of reports while running.
    Can somebody can explain how the query runs at backend like when we hit Run query in Webi how it functioins.When the MDX Query will be generated and how the query hits the BI/Underlying database.
    I am basically looking out what happens behind the screen when we run a report in Back end etc.
    I am using BI7.0 and BOXIR3.. Thanks in advance for reply.

    ok Thanks for your reply.Here are the answers for your questions.
    I)how many items are in the BI query ?
    52 dimensions it has and 15 keyfigures(ckfs,Rkfs) and around 250 details objects
    but we are using only the dimension objects in reports,we are not using detail objects I mean to say hardly 3 detail objects we are using in each report.
    Since these objects are navigationla attributes they are automatically created in universe as detailed objecs.So if we remove the detail objects does the performance will increase considerably?
    CAN YOU PLEASE COMMENT ON THIS
    II)how many items are using in the Web Intelligence query panel for each report ?
    In webI Query Panel roughly for each report we are using 10 Dimensions and 5 Keyfigures(Including Ckf,Rkfs) with 6 Prompts
    III)Do the reports share characteristics ? If yes - how many ?
       Yes they share charactorstics .Maximum upto 7 Characterstics  which are shared among the reports like Country,Post code,Group,Tier

    Hi Vishu,
    As Olaf said, this is a calculated member which used in MDX script in your cube, we cannot execute it in SQL Server Management Studio directly. Here are some document about calculated members and MDX script for your reference.

  • Running MDX query in oracle

    How do i run a mdx query in oracle. Do i need to install any extra component.
    I used the following query and i get an illegal symbol error...
    SELECT
    { [Measures].[sales] } on columns,
    {  [Date].[1998],[Date].[1999] } on rows
    From units_history_fact

    MDX is not supported by Oracle. If the given database uses Oracle OLAP then you can use the simba connector: http://www.simba.com/connectors/mdx-for-oracle-olap.

  • MDX Query generation

    Dear All,
    Could you please tell me how to find out the MDX query generated at backend when a SAP BW query is executed ?
    Is there a way we can find in SAP system or do we need a third party tool for this ?
    With Regards,
    Pearl

    This depends on the reporting tool that you are using. If you are on BEx Analyzer and your BW backend is based on 7.x then there are no MDX queries generated in backend. Instead of them BICS interface is used.
    For other reporting tools like BEx 3.x you can use transactions RSRT and MDXTEST to test MDX queries.

  • How can ew add filter in Dataset of MDX Query

    Hi,
    I am working on TFS 2010 Report with Report Builder 3.0
    I need to fetch data on basis of Start Task Date(means when user start their task).
    So i have added a new field in a TFS Work Item Template with name StartTaskDate.
    Now i need to fetch the report FromTaskDate to TOTaskDate(Date Range Filter).
    so how can we do this with filter option?
    Can any body help me on this.
    Thanks

    Hi rohitnegi09,
    If you want @FromTaskDate and @TOTaskDate parameters are Date/Time data types, please refer to my last reply in the following thread:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/db75abb9-2250-463a-8ef3-70426f617329/mdx-report-on-date-range?forum=sqlreportingservices
    If you want @FromTaskDate and @TOTaskDate parameters are Text data types, we can directly type the following MDX query in the dataset:
    select
    {[Measures].[Internet Sales Amount]
    } on columns,
    {[Date].[Date].members} on rows
    from(
    select
    STRTOMEMBER("[Date].[Date].&["+@FromTaskDate+"]"):STRTOMEMBER("[Date].[Date].&["+@ToTaskDate+"]")
    ) on columns
    from [Adventure Works]

  • How to speed up this query?

    I have created a demo table:
    create table demo1(d date);
    and insert some data to table:
    begin
    -- add 6000000 rows
    for i in 1..1000000 loop
    insert into demo1 values(trunc(sysdate-i));
    insert into demo1 values(trunc(sysdate-i));
    insert into demo1 values(trunc(sysdate-i));
    insert into demo1 values(trunc(sysdate-i));
    insert into demo1 values(trunc(sysdate-i));
    insert into demo1 values(trunc(sysdate-i));
    end loop;

    end;
    The query
    select * from demo1
    where d=to_date('25.10.2004','DD.MM.YYYY')
    executed three times faster than
    select from demo1 where d=trunc(sysdate-1);

    I have created index:
    create index demo1_indx on demo1(d);

  • How to Find MDX Query

    Hi,
    I have created a WEBI report on an OLAP universe on top of a BEx query. Is it possible to see the MDX query being generated by my WEBI report? If yes, then could someone please guide me as to how do I see the exact MDX query generated by the report? Thanks!
    Regards,

    Hi Ingo,
    Thanks for the answer. We are having an issue and I was wondering if you could shed somelight on this.
    Our WEBI report running on top of an OLAP Universe on BEx query is taking forever to run and in the end does not return any data.
    We are monitoring the query through BW and apparently it is stuck in the step:  CL_RSR_MDX_BXML_FLATTENING.
    Through logging we got the underlying MDX query and ran it in BEx Editor and it ran in seconds. But when the same MDX query in ran in BEx Editor using the XML option, it is stucking on the same step i.e. CL_RSR_MDX_BXML_FLATTENING
    My hunch is that the result is being converted into XML format from MDX native format before it is passed on to InfoView and this conversion/flattening is taking forever. Is it a known issue? Is there any way around? Thanks!
