How to transfer vhs home movies to dvd with my new IMac

I'm looking for suggestions from people who have been successful with any product that is not too difficult to use that will help me get my old home movies (vhs) to dvd and hopefully be able to do some editing in iMovie.

I have done lots of this.
You need, an Analog to Digital converter, iMovie, and iDVD. (You don't need a DVD player, just a VCR.)
VCR -> ADVC300 -> Mac. (DVDs come out of the Mac.)
To get your VHS video into iMovie, look at the Grassvally ADVC300. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 (I have used it a few times with iMovie 09 and 11).
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source (VCR, Tivo, Satellite Receiver) and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).

For maximum quality here is my procedure:  ADVC300 > iMovie 06 > iDVD 11
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11, why?
iMovie 09/11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality.
If you share your movie from iMovie 09/11, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 is a "lossless" combination.

Simple idea-but not always easy. Get a dvd ripping program (or find a trialware version of one). Insert dvd. Rip DVD. save dvd as either DV or MP-4.Open with iMovie. Fiddle around,VLC might be helpful??

  • How to convert VHS  home movies to DVD?

How do I get best quality converting VHS to DVD. I will need to use iMovie as some need heavy editing. I know I can get them into iMovie via firewire using the D/A converter on my newer Canon camcorder. My Question (s)? is /are: What settings & format should I use to import into iMovie8 and to export to iDVD for best possible quality when played on a large screen (50inch). Several of the tapes were in such poor shape that the D/A converter on the canon wouldn't play them and I had to digitize them by playing through Eye-Tv(not the best solution but the only one I could come up with). Thanks in advance for any guidance you can give.

How do I get best quality converting VHS to DVD.
    Use iMovie 06 instead.
iMovie 08 now uses single-field processing. This means every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage.
I find I get the best quality using iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 (use Professional Quality encoding in iDVD 08).
iMovie 06 is a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

To get your VHS video into iMovie, look at the Canopus ADVC300. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 (not sure about iMovie 08).

You will need to use a "Real" Mac, (with a Firewire input).

  • I want to transfer lots of vhs home movies to dvd, need advice on how to do that.

i was looking at a roxio vhs to dvd product for mac, but i'm not sure it's compatible with the new imac i just bought.  Any advice?

Rather than the Roxio product, I would recommend that you look at the products from El Gato.
I used the EyeTV Hybrid and it worked great. It attaches to the Mac via USB and attached to the VHS deck through composite cables (rca jacks). The EyeTV Hybrid will import your VHS, but it will also turn your Mac into an HD TV if you add a rabbit ears antenna. You can record and edit TV shows.
If you use this option, you can import the VHS into the EyeTV software. You can them import it into iMovie if you like to do editing. Then transfer to iDVD to burn a DVD.
El Gato makes the hardware (but not the software) for the Roxio product. They also make their own version of the VHS capture product with their own software.  I have no opinion on whether it is any good or not, but I have seen posts by others who had a difficult time with it.
    El Gato EyeTV website.
If you go up a few hundred dollars in price, a company called Grass Valley makes some Digital Analog Converters which will also capture VHS. You attach via RCA cables to the VHS deck, and attach to Mac via Firewire, so make sure your Mac has Firewire. People have tried the ADVC 300 and the ADVC 110 with good results.
One more thing, if you have a brand new iMac, it may not come preinstalled with iDVD. You may need to purchase iDVD or Toast from Roxio to be able to make DVDs. You can also buy Compressor from Apple to make DVDs. The Roxio option includes a basic version of Toast.
Finally, here is a movie I made after capturing with the EyeTV Hybrid so you can get a feel for the quality. It is not great, because the quality of a VHS is not even as good a standard definition TV, but it still came out pretty good. I would not expect it to look great on a big screen TV, though.

  • Does anyone know how I can transfer VHS home movies from my VHS player via my iMac to a DVD

Does anyone know if 'Dazzle' works with Mac to transfer VHS tapes from a video player to a DVD via an iMac?

Also, I should mention that I spoke to an Apple rep. He sent me a link to download a driver for the Jukebox once we found out that the pc did not recognize the device when I plugged it into the USB port. He told me that once I upload the driver, it will recognize it and I can just copy and paste the songs into a folder, then import them to iTunes. So far it has not worked and when I tried to call back, it looks like morning is the soonest I can speak to someone. So I'm trying on here.

  • How do I get a movie on DVD into my new 5th Generation ipod?

I read up, and it seems the only way to get a DVD movie onto the 60 GB iPod is to buy Quicktime Pro. I wouldn't have a problem with this if I was just sure that a DVD format will convert well with this program. In fact I'm not ever sure how to transfer a full legnth DVD to my mac's hard drive.
    Thanks for you help guys!
    Michelle

Before you go with Quicktime Pro, do a search. Others have had problems with the video converting but when putting on the iPod no sound.
Since you have a Mac, alot are using a program called Handbrake. A quick search will give you the info you need.
I'm a Windows person using a purchased program.

  • How to transfer my videos podcasts from macbookpro to my new iMac ?

I've just bought a new iMac and would like to transfer my videos podcast from my MacBookPro without having to download all of them again. I was already successfull in transfering the subscriptions but they are asking to download again all the videos, including the free and the bought ones. That is a waste of time ! Isn't there a Apple smart way to avoid it ?
    Thanks in advance folks !

You can't do it directly on your iPad. You will need to copy them to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
Then add them to your computer's iTunes via File > Add To Library so that they go into the Movies part of your iTunes library, and then sync them to your iPad's Videos app.

  • How to set up an existing Yamaha N12 with a new iMac

    Hi,
I hope someone can help me.
I just bought a Yamaha N12 mixer Dec 2009 last month and been trying it with my MacBook Pro. It's firmware has been updated to work with the Yamaha Steinberg FW driver, and it's been communicating fine with the my MacBook Pro.
Now the problem. I just bought an iMac 27' running Mac OS X 10.6.2 last week.
How should I get the N12 to talk to my iMac? What sequence of driver installation should I go about?
Should install all the Tools for n/mLan drivers that came with the N12 installation discs still? And then carry on with installing the Yamaha Steinberg FW driver over it? Or can I straight away install the latest Yamaha Steinberg FW driver?
I'm afraid of technical problems as I might have screwed up my first iMac's firewire 800 port when I installed the Yamaha Steinberg FW driver straight away. Luckily the Mac shop was kind enough and willing to give me a one for one replacement of the iMac due to the firewire port problem. I'm not sure to what extend the firewire800 port problem might have with the FW driver installation or if it was a manufacturing defect. In anycase, its a one-time only exchange. And I now have the replacement iMac, and the firewire800 port is working fine. I'm now hesitant to install anything so that the iMac can talk to my N12 in the worry that it might affect anything if I did the wrong steps especially the firewire 800 port.
Please help if you might know of the correct steps? i just want my N12 to talk to my new iMac without any possible spoiling of my firewire 800 port due to wrong installation steps on my part.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
    Regards,
    BG

What does Yamaha's User Manual says about driver installation? Did you follow the instructions as indicated with your 1st iMac? Are there any notes in the driver installation instructions saying that there is a risk of damaging a FireWire port when you do something in the wrong order? If so, you must follow these instruction carefully in order not to screw up the 2nd iMac, I presume.
However, from my experience, you can't really "screw up" a port by installing a driver. But you must also be aware that the driver has to be suitable for the current operating system of your iMac (that is for Snow Leopard or Mac OSX 10.6.2)
