How to use Vectors ?????????

Hi guys, i am a newbie in java and about to die due to some stressful assignments. I am not asking u to help in assignment. Just please share some knowledges about vector. How to use it? so that i can use it in my assignment. Thank u .
AND IN THIS CODE BELOW: WHY DO WE HAVE TO IMPORT MARK;
THERE IS ANOTHER CLASS CALLED MARK DEFINED ELSEWHERE.
import java.util.Vector;
import Mark;
public class Student {
private String name;
private Vector subjectResults; // the implementation of the relationship from Student - Mark
public Student (String name) {
this.name = name;
subjectResults = new Vector ();
public void insertMark (int value) {
this.subjectResults.addElement (new Mark (value)); // WHAT DOES THIS LINE MEAN ?
public int findHighestMark () {
int size = subjectResults.size (); //cache the result
int highestMark = 0;
for (int i = 0; i < size; i++) {
Mark result = (Mark) subjectResults.get (i); //WHY DO WE HAVE TO PUT "(MARK)" ?
if (result.get () > highestMark) {
highestMark = result.get ();
return highestMark;

I'm going to guess that Mark is a class provided to you. Do you have the Mark.java file? Or only Mark.class? If you have Mark.java, see if the first line is package Mark;
It shouldn't be.
You shouldn't need to import Mark.
A vector is a like a dynamic array (not really, but in simple terms it is), you can keep adding things to it. You can insert stuff in the middle, you can extract stuff from the middle (doesn't leave a gap).
You use it with:
public void addElement(Object toAdd)
public Object elementAt(int index)
These are the two most important methods of Vector.
Note that it returns an Object. You won't be able to do anything useful with an Object (except for toString()), so you'll need to cast it to whatever you're expecting (Student or Mark or something).
That's the basics of Vectors, hope this helps,

    Dear friends,

    you can't directly store a tree in a list.Ummm... Just to be contrary... Yes you CAN store a tree in a table.... In fact that's how the windows file system works.
    Having said that... you would be well advised to investigate tree data-structures before resorting to flattening a tree into a list.
    So... Do you have a specific requirement to produce a List? Your umming-and-erring about Vector vs ArrayList makes it sound like you're still at the stage of choosing a datastructure.
    Cheers. Keith.

  • How to use vector in JTable? Please help......

    Hi there
    I can use JTable using object array to manupulate data but it has a limitation of defining number of rows of the array. Alternatively i want to use vector. Anyone help me how to convert to using vector.

    hi,
    you could either use javax.swing.table.DefaultTableModel because this class uses a java.util.Vector for data storage or you could implements your own TableModel by extending javax.swing.table.AbstractTableModel.

  • How to use vector file without adobe illustrator?? please help

    I am using the free trial period of adobe illustrator to creat a logo.  I don't want to buy illustrator b/c I don't plan on using the program for anything else,  I would like to save my logo in some kind of vector format so I can use it for lots of different printing options.  But I can't figure out how to do this b.c my computer won't open the file without illustrator.  Is there anyway to creat a usable print friendly logo without buying illustrator? Thanks for any help!

    I believe if you export it to wmf or emf you will have a Vector file that can be used in word or powerpoint and can be placed in other programs as can ai files which can be placed in word or powerpoint documents as vector files.
    Flash (swf) is another way of saving it and it is also vector.
    However even though you say you will never have use for Illustrator which is what I thought in 1995 when I use it to create a logo, I soon found more use for it and every year since have found a project that has rewarded me many times the cost of the application once I had purchased it. Most of which I never thought I had the need for and probably would not have even made the attempt to make the effort and the profit if I did not own the license.
    And every time I say to myself what do i have this application for the opportunities arises yet again.
    I thought I would share my experience with you.

  • How can use ' Vector ' in JSP

    I use rs.getString(1); can get three strings like "12:00-13:00", "01:00-02:00", "02:00-03:00" from sql 2000. I would like these time one by one, if it equals user select. System will show the message...then I use following code...but doesn't work because jsp said Vector not a type.(cannot resolve).... I would like to know any other methods can do the same things. hope sb help... thank you
    Vector stringVector = new Vector();
    while(rs.next()){
    stringVector.addElement(rs.getString(1));
    Iterator sv = stringVector.iterator();
    while (sv.hasNext()){
    if(time.equals((String)sv.next())
    out.println("wrong");
    else{
    ......

    I personally would use an ArrayList. From what I hear, it's better than a vector. You want to make sure that you include the line at the top
    <%@ page import = "java.util.ArrayList" %>
    ArrayList stringVector = new ArrayList ();
    while(rs.next()){
    stringVector.add(rs.getString(1));
    for (int i =0; i < stringVector.size(); i++){
       if(time.equals((String)stringVector.get(i))
       out.println("wrong");
    else{No need to bother with any of that iterator stuff. My guess is that you're not including the Vector below, or a required jar file is missing (but Vector is part of the core java package, so the file can't be missing)

  • How to use lists or vectors and things?

    Hello !
    I started to code with java about year ago and the first jdk that i used was 1.5.0. Since 1.5.0, generics have been supported and I think that linkedlists, arraylists and whatever have been made differently. I can't use these generics in my mobile applications so I don't how to use vectors and stacks etc, different way in my applications.
    When I used (for instance) arrayists with jdk 1.5.0 or 6, I did it like this:
    ArrayList <AL> al = new ArrayList <AL>();
    void something(){
    for(AL a : al){
    //do something
    But how do I do these with mobile things, and whats the most similar thing compared to linkedlist and arraylist, vector? I really don't know how to add and remove things with these. If someone can point a good tutorial or thread, I would really appreciate that.

    Hi,
    I am getting a list of documents information from the db and to display them into html tables.The problem is how can i use Vectors to store the information so that i can list them using for loop?
    String sql = "SELECT * FROM Document";
              System.out.println("manageUser.jsp sql: "+sql);
              ResultSet rs = db.ExecuteSQL(sql);
              if(rs.next()){
              name = rs.getString("Name");
                   System.out.println("manageUser.jsp Name: "+name);
                   title     = rs.getString("Title");
                   System.out.println("manageUser.jsp Title: "+title);
                   date     = rs.getString("DateEntry");
                   System.out.println("manageUser.jsp Date: "+date);
                   path     = rs.getString("Path");
                   System.out.println("manageUser.jsp Path: "+path);
                   docTypeNo     = rs.getString("DocumentType");
                   System.out.println("manageUser.jsp docTypeNo: "+docTypeNo);
                   comment = rs.getString("Comment");
                   System.out.println("manageUser.jsp Comment: "+comment);
    }

    I'd load the values into a data structure and put those into the page scope for the JSP to pick up.
    You can create a List of Maps, one Map per row, where each Map has the column name as the key and the SELECT result as the value. That'll let you iterate through to display the values in an HTML table in your JSP. - MOD

  • How to define DefaultTableModel to use vector data?

    Hi ...
    I want to show files data in a jtable which consist of files (Name,size,path) I want to use vectors for remove and add methods. The problem is with data vector I tried to define it as
    Vector <Vector[][]>data;I get always an error when I tried to add data to data vector so where is my problem?
    Thanks.
    Feras

    Vector <Vector[][]>data;You are confusing 2Dimensional arrays with Vectors. When using Vectors you need to create a Vector of Vectors. The code should be something like this;
    Vector<Vector> data = new Vector<Vector>();
    Vector<Object> row1 = new Vector<Object>();
    row1.add(name);
    row1.add(size);
    row1.add(path);
    data.add(row);Presumably the code to add the rows would be in a loop.

    Does anyone have any idea of why? how can I solve the problem? Isn't Vector supposed to be "dynamic"?
    Elsewhere I use Vectors with no problems but I am not accessing it right after having added any element, rather I return it as the result of some elaboration and then access it.
    I know it's Christmas time and so I wish you all Merry Christmas and Happy new Year. I hope someone has time to answer me over this holydays.
    Thanks anyway,

    Does anyone have any idea of why? how can I solve the
    problem? Isn't Vector supposed to be "dynamic"?You try to access an element after the last element. When you set i = list.size(), i will be the index of the last element plus one. This is because indices count from 0.
    It is the list.get(i) that causes the problem.

  • Re: [SunONE-JATO] Re: How to use a tiled view without a model

    I'm not sure what is different for you now. You still parse the string
    and put it into a data structure. Before the data structure was a
    vector, in JATO its just a model with a "hidden" data structure (a hash
    map).
    MVC only really comes into play when you talk about where your write
    this code, and where the data structure is being stored. So really, JATO
    takes care of half of the MVC'ness of it all (where the data is store).
    You just decide where to be the code to populate the model.
    Make sense?
    Is there something different required of you in JATO in this scenario
    that I am not grasping?

    The problem I was solving involved a single string, which contained
    delimited subsets of information.
    The string looked like
    this:"time|analyst|description|time|analyst|description|..."
    In ND, I parsed it apart into it's components (time vector, analyst vector,
    description vector), populated the repeated.
    With JATO, how would I make a model for something that doesn't have a
    database component like this?
    I'm pretty new to this MVC thing, so bear with me.

    I guess the only thing "weird" (for lack of a better term) about what
    you are doing is that your are populating the model on the "display
    cycle". Typically, the cycle goes like this:
    Request -> populate model -> update data store -> retrieve data to
    populate model -> display data
    some of the above steps are optional but hopefully you get the point I
    am making.
    So what you are doing is:
    Request -> populate model/display data
    If it works for you, then it's not necessarilly wrong. But I would
    probably have my model populated before I forwarded to the target
    (displaying view bean) or at a minimum, in the begin display event of
    the view bean or the tiled view, but not during the iteration of the
    tiled view.

  • Is there a way to "mix" colors using vectors?

    Here's my problem: I'm not a very technical and detailed artist, and I'm not trying to be. My works is pretty cartoonish actually, so I never dabble with the paintbrush and always use vectors. Anyhow, I was wondering, if I want to draw, using vectors, a guy with half of his legs in a pool, and half not, how would I go about coloring that? I mean, I'm intending to make the man pinkish, and the water light bluish, but how can I achieve the mixture, a combination of the two, for the half of the legs underwater? I'm not seeking color recommendations (for the legs) by the way. Is there a way to combine two colors to achieve an in-between ground?

    Put the legs on one layer and put the water on another layer above/in-front and adjust the opacity of the water-layer to let some of the leg-layer show through.  If you don't want to construct your cartoon using layers which is one of Photoshop's main benefits, you can figure out what color to make the wet leg with by creating a swatch of leg color in one layer and then make a water-colored layer in front/above it and adjust the opacity then use the eyedropper to sample the color of the combination.
    Of course in a real situation with the observer above the level of the water looking through it at an angle, the leg would become bluer the further into the water it went because there would be more water between the foot and the observer than say the knee and the observer and you'd want to make a gradient of color or gradient of transparency using a layer mask with a black-to-white gradient in the mask instead of just one opacity setting, and there would also be some size and offset of the leg due to refraction of the water, but as you said you're not a detailed artist.

    I am building a program but have a problem.
    My program uses a controller class which instantiates a World-class. In the world class has a Vector I make a Vector in which I place all the elements in the world. (I also made an Element class from which all the objects that I put into this Vector extend.)
    Everything except for some methods in the controller class are declared public. I might need to use static, but I do not know how.
    // CONSTRUCTOR CONTROLLER CLASS
    world = new World ();  // instantiate one and only one world
    world.newElement (new Beamer ("beamer", 20. , 20.));  // use a selfwritten method to add a "Star Trek"-like
                              // beamer to the world. I give it a name and position.
    world.newElement (new Avatar ("avt", "beamer"));  // add an avatar which is "beamed up". so what I do is that I use the beamer for the beginposition of the avatar. However, and this is my problem, in the constructor of Avatar (see below) i need the beamer in world, but my compiler cant find world. I probably need to import my World or controller class, but even then: I do not understand how to use an instance (world is an instance. I cant use the World-class as the class does not contain the beamer element)
    public class Avatar extends Element {
         public Avatar (String n, String beamer){
              name = n;
              posx = world.named("beamer").getPosx; // the selfwritten method named finds the
                // element in the Vector that goes with the name. Any ideas to make this code better are welcome too.
              posy = world.named("beamer").getPosy;
    } Any ideas on how to solve this (common) problem in good coding are most welcome.

    I think you are best off if you use static methods and static fields only in your World class. That way you don't have to instantiate it and everyone has access to its methods. This would be then completely analogous to how you access methods and fields of the well-known class System (e.g. when you use System.out.println). This also has the advantage that you are guaranteed to have only one copy of the World.
    Here is an example of how your World class, Avatar class and main code would look like.
    Main code: (note the use of capital W in the name World, referring to class rather than instance).
    // no need to instantiate World, as we call its static methods only
    World.newElement (new Beamer ("beamer", 20. , 20.));
    World.newElement (new Avatar ("avt", "beamer"));  // add an avatar which is "beamed up". World class: (note the static keyword in front of the vector and the methods)
    public class World {
      private static Vector v;       // static field, only one copy of it ever exists
      public static void newElement(Element e)   // static method, can call without instantiating world
         v.addElement(e);
      public static Element named(String n)  // use to look up elements
         ... some code which goes through v and finds element named "n" ...
         ... return reference to that element ...
    }and finally the Avatar: (again note the use of reference to World as a class rather than instance)
    public class Avatar extends Element {
         public Avatar (String n, String beamer){
              name = n;
              posx = World.named("beamer").getPosx;
              posy = World.named("beamer").getPosy;
    } The above example is how I would implement it when you don't actually need instances of the World class.
