  • HELP - how do you save pictures through the recovery mode?

    How do you save pictures through the recovery mode.  I have the black screen with cursor and despite trying all the tips noted here nothing seems to fix the issue.  These have included using Utility disk to re-install OS-X, repairing the disks.  Also tried the holding shift on start up and entering username and password.  Also tried internet recovery and then repair and re-install.  Nothing works!
    Happy to restore from a back up, but I have been rubbish and not backed up for a long time.  Also happy to delete and re-install completely but don't want to loose pics.
    Please let me know any suggestions!!

    Is it possible to attach an external drive and copy across files through the utility function?
    That requires that you can boot the MBP.
    Or to boot the mac using the time machine back up?
    You can try using startup manager:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1310
    But you still need a working volume where you can install the backed up data.
    The good news is that since you have a Time machine backup, you can transfer that data to another Mac or clone:

    If You Are Locked Out Or Have Forgotten Your Passcode or Just Need to Restore Your Device
    iTunes 10 for Mac- Update and restore software on iPod, iPhone, or iPad
    iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
    iOS- Understanding passcodes
         If you have forgotten your Restrictions code, then follow the instructions
         below but DO NOT restore any previous backup. If you do then you will
         simply be restoring the old Restrictions code you have forgotten. This
         same warning applies if you need to restore a clean system.
    A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (if You Forget Your Passcode)
    If you need to restore your device or ff you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
    Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
    Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
    Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up
             option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not
             necessary to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
             you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
               After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
              to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
              iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
              you see "iPhone is activated."
         9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup. If you do not have a
              backup to restore, then restore as New.
    If you are restoring to fix a forgotten Restrictions Code, then skip Step 9 and restore as New.
    If you really do need to put it in recovery mode (DFU):
    Placing your device into recovery mode:
    Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
       1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
           other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
       2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
           until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
                  * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
                    Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
                    release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
      3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
           device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the screen pictured below,
           let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
           charge, and then start with step 2 again.
      4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
           When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
      5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
      6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
    If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Additional Information:
    Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

  • IOS 7 put my phone in recovery mode and will not restore

    After updating to iOS 7, my iphone went into recovery mode and everytime I try and restore it, it errors out with an error code 9.  I have tried 2 different cords and 2 different computers and it will not restore.  HELP    Not sure what to do from here and the nearest Apple store is 200 miles away.

    Hi all,
    Bit of background so I don't waste anyone's time:
    IPhone 4s, itunes 11.1 (both on computer and iphone)
    I too am stuck in this recovery loop. I've read all over the community and have tried the suggestions:
    I put my phone in DFU mode & also recovery mode (a.e. hold home/sleep button down for 10 seconds, etc., etc., etc.) and tried restoring this way 10 different times, as some posts say it sometimes works after the 4-5 try but still no results.
    On my Iphone Screen the apple logo appears and the status bar below it gets stuck about 2/3 of the way, then I get the following error message, "could not restore because of unknown error (1)".
    I set up an appt. at the apple store for tomorrow, but holy sh*t what a fiasco!
    Any suggestions?

    Using iPhone/iPad Recovery Mode
    http://ipod.about.com/od/iphonetroubleshooting/a/Iphone-Recovery-Mode.htm
    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school enviroment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Why does updating IOS 7.0.2 put EVERYONES phone in recovery mode??

    Thousands of people loosing ALL content!! Factory restore should not be the default action. Users content is 50% or more the value of the product. Obviously backing up your content before is the right thing to do prior. People like my father do not activly use a comp nor have the knowedge to CONSTANTLY back up their info. This has happened with ALL models; my friends 4s 5 5c, my 5s, my fathers 4, extended family's 5, neighbors 4s....... Its getting to be rediculous. Can you imagin the hardship a 50+yo goes thourgh when someone/thing TAKES everything from them????? There has got to be a better way then putting faulty software out and making people go through recovery mode just to fix YOUR bugs! It is dificult to vouch for Apple with all the issues in software. Make note: The future is in the software.... FIX IT.

    Because that is the only way to completely remove the old operating system and replace it with a new one. If you have done things properly a backup should be made before the system restore occurs or you can make the backup by connecting to iTunes for the upgrade.
    If you do an over the air installation, then the operating system is installed in-place. The user content is not affected.
    All of this assumes you keep the device in proper working order, backup your stuff regularly using iTunes, and keep your device synched. it helps to read the manual.
    There is nothing wrong with the software that i've seen after upgrading two iPod Touches, an iPad, and iPhone. No problems at all. Now, I'm not everybody, but it would seem that if there were problems with the upgrade, then I would not have been able to complete all four without incident as have millions of other users.
    If you use a computer or any portable device, then it's time to become knowledgeable. Ignorance is hardly an excuse.
