HT1338 How can I upgrade my Mac OS X 10.5.8? I can not perform a software update
I am trying to update my software to a OS X Mountain lion but can not.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.

After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.

Software updates tells me it needs to download and install a new version of itunes. When this notice first appeared the download started but stopped after about 34 MB and said the download was corrupted. Later (after many restarts), the notice appears again but the download starts where it left off and immediately gives me the message that it is corrupted. Check the version you're being offered, and go to Apple Support Downloads.
Read the info on the update and decide if you actually need it. (if your OS version is 10.6.4 as shown in your info, I doubt that you will need it at all).

There are literally thousands of sites with videos (linked to from yet thousands more) that will prompt you to "upgrade" or update your already updated Flash Player. This is the most common method of delivery for malware like that.
A friend who runs a PC Repair business told me that if you've updated your Flash Player and you see a warning in a web page that you need to download an update to watch a video, it's an attack site.
A simple gesture of holding your mouse over the warning or link, will indicate the address it points to. If it DOESN'T say Adobe anywhere in the beginning of the address (download.adobe.com, or adobe.com/downloads), it's a forgery, and you should leave that page immedaitely. If you download and install whatever they link you to, it may play the content you were looking for, but you've just been infected with something that may lay dormant for months and then suddenly take over your whole system.
If you use your PC for work, you're really in trouble. -

I have a situation where the administrator password is rejected when attempting a software update. I think this happened because of syncing an iPad to the iMac. How can I reset the Software Update back to the administrator password?

Another thing is: which generation iPod Touch do you have? The 2nd gen Touch cannot install iOS4.3. It can go up to iOS4.2, though and I notice you are using 4.1

If your Macbook has an Intel processor, you can first upgrade to 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
You need to purchase that from the Apple retail Store:

If you are not in the US, use the flag button at the bottom of the page to change to your country's store.
Depending on they type of Intel macbook it is, you may be able to upgrade further to Lion or Mountain Lion.
Open About this Mac from the Apple menu.
Then, click on More Info.
Select the Hardware heading and llok at the Model Identifier.
I can't remember if it was called that or if that OS had a hardware section, but you are looking for something like macbook5,1
If that first number is less than a 5, you can't go any further than Lion. Unless there is something in Lion you need, I would stick with Snow Leopard.
If the first number is a 5 or greater, you can upgrade to Mountain Lion. Once you have installed 10.6 and updated it to 10.6.8, you can purchase and install Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store (which is available in the Apple menu of OS X 10.6.8 or later).
However, if you want to go beyond Snow Leopard, make sure you purchase enough RAM to have at least 4GB. Any less than that would not be pleasant.
Additionally, Mavericks, 10.9, is due to be released this fall. You may want to wait until then and just upgrade to that instead of Mountain Lion (10.8). Either way, you will need to purchase and install 10.6 from DVD. You need to keep that disk if you ever need to reinstall the OS. -

Make a backup of your files, insert the DVD and follow the steps to upgrade. After upgrading, open > Software Update, and install OS X 10.6.8. Finally, open Software Update again and install iTunes 11, or iTunes 10.7 > http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1576 -
On my general settings page, I do not have the software update option.
If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

Can anyone help with how to stop the software updater pop ups advising me to update to Reader 11.0.03? My antivirus advises the link in the pop up is unsafe, so I went to the Adobe website to update from Reader 9. The website doesn't offer X1, but did offer X, so I updated to 10.1.7.
Why is the site not offering a download for X1?
Even though I have updated to X I am still getting the pop ups for X1. I have attached a screen shot of the pop up - is this legitimate or some kind of scam carrying a virus?

How can I prevent automatic software updating iWork apps
I am one of the many users who hates the new iWork apps and have reverted to iWork 9. But I get reminded everytime a new version comes out and I risk updating to the new versions if I do not notice that.
How can I remove these apps so that I never get an automatic update. (I've hidden them from the list of apps but that doesn't help.)I believe what you are looking for is this...
System Preferences---> App Store---> uncheck the "Automatically check for updates"
Or any one of those you wish to not have.
I don't know how it happened. But I have both iWork '09 as well as the latest. I just opened Numbers for '09 for the first time for this thread. It told me of a brand new update, blah blah blah. So I selected the box not to tell me again. I can quit the program and open it back up, of course it won't tell me about the new update. I also have both versions of Numbers opened right now.
It would appear that my Mac created a folder labeled "iWork '09" with Keynote, Numbers and Pages in it. All of which are from '09
I also have the "Automatically check for updates" marked in System Preferences. I don't get any notifications either. So maybe you could keep this marked, download and install the newer version and still have both on your Mac.
