is that correct? I spent an hour looking for it and thought maybe it was a glitch in the new app or ios.

However, I'm not sure what the itunes photos add, if one is using photostream.
The iTunes photos tab lets you download any photos that were on the iPhone before Photo Stream was introduced or do a total download of your iPhone's photos if you haven't done so previously. It's also for us "control freaks".

First of all, did they all sync? Are they all there and they look alright?
Depending on how they were shot, the sync re-optimizes each one for the iPad display. If you shoot in RAW or have a very high resolution camera, that process can be pretty slow (also depends on how old & how fast your computer is as it is the machine doing the rendering of the images).
As long as it worked, I'd say you are fine. Enjoy the new iPad.

Firefox recently upgraded itself to version 31.3.0 on one of my computers. Now the circle by the "inbox" just spins....it's been more than 24 hours.

You don't see it on the left-hand side of iTunes - you need to connect and select the iPad on the left-hand side, and then one of the tabs on the right-hand side that you use to select which content to sync to the iPad should be Photos : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
You will need to select and sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent sync remains on the iPad, not including photos in a subsequent sync is how you delete them from it.

This is incorrect.
The Photos tab is always available when you have your iDevice connected.
First open iPhoto, move the photos you want to get rid of to the trash, then close iPhoto.
No one seems to want to delete the photos from iPhoto/computer.

you need to be looking on the device pages. iTunes does not manage the photos just syncs them

Where is the photo tab on iTunes? My iPad is listed on the left side in iTunes, but there is no photos tab.
The left hand pane window in iTunes is maximized, but I do not see any tab for photos. Seems related to a recent update (IOS7?) as this was there - at least before the very big change to the interface.

I am looking for software to store photos with. I am not a fancy photographer, and really am just looking for the digital version of a photo album. iPhoto is not cutting it, mainly because it does not back up and restore easily on an external HD.

That's how Time Machine and iPhoto now work. Restore the library to one of the external HDs, check it for the photos you want, export them to the boot drive and delete the restored library.
If you know the file name of the photo you're looking for you can search for them in the TM backup using Find Any File.
My workflow allows me to do that:
1 - upload new photos to a folder on the Desktop.
2 - name the folder to represent the contents and date: 01/03/10-Toads Bday
3 - use a file renaming app to sequentially rename the photos in the folder to: 2010-01-03-Toads Bday-001.JPG, -002,JPG, -003.JPG, etc.
4 - import the folder into iPhoto creating an Event with the same title as the folder.
Now I can search for those file by file name with any app of my choosing.

You need to plug your phone to your pc and then in itunes hit the photo tab and then sync the picture you want from your PC.
You can't do that process via the phone itunes.

It's not likely to re-connect to a network lying on the ground somewhere and getting rained on, it would be really great if I could see that map again so I could use it's last known location to find it. Kind of pointless to have a 24 hr killswitch deadline. If I had known I would have taken a screen-shot while I still had access to the information. Since I lost the phone at Canada's Wonderland (which is now closed for the season) I don't have access to the location where I lost the phone (under a roller-coaster probably), and so I wanted to send the Lost And Found people a screen-shot of it's last known location, but I guess I can't do that now.
