If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect to your computer & click on the "Update your device using iTunes".
Tip - You may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. After you update to iOS 5.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

Go to Settings > General > About and see what iOS version you are running.  If it is lower than 5, you won't find the software update button.  It was added when iOS 5 came out.  The current iOS is 5.1.1.  To update to the current OS, you'll need to connect to the computer you sync with (this is important - do not connect to a computer you do not sync with as you will lose you apps) and update the software in iTunes.  Once you have updated to the 5.1.1, the software update button will be in Settings going forward.  Make sure you have a lot of time.  Updating from below 5 to 5 or higher is a somewhat lengthy process.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

How do I update my iPad to ios6

If it's the original iPad, you can't.
If it's an iPad 2 or newer running an iOS version prior to 5.0, connect it to iTunes on a computer and update it from there.
If it's an iPad 2 or newer running iOS 5, see above, or update it from the device itself.

How do I update my iPad to iOS

If you already have iOS 5+ installed then you should have a Settings > General > Software Update option for direct update on the iPad. If you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes (you can also do it this way if you hae iOS 5+).
To update via your computer, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

A first gen iPad should update to iOS 5.1.1 (it doesn't support iOS6).  An iPad 2, 3 or 4 should get updated to iOS 6.0.1, so you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change.

How do I update my ipad to iOS 7.0.3?

This process will upgrade the iPad to iOS 7.0.4, assuming you have an iPad 2 or newer.
If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

You can only update it to 5.1.1(for the first generation iPad) or 6.0.1(for all others.) This is done by connecting it to a computer and updating it through iTunes.

  • HT4623 How I can upgrade my iPad (iOS 3.2.2) to iOS 4.0.0 or later ?

How I can upgrade my iPad (iOS 3.2.2) to iOS 4.0.0 or later ?
I'm from Indonesia. I have my iPad (the first version) from 2 years ago. Now I have a trouble to download some apps in App Store just because of the requirements doesn't support for my iPad. Nowadays most of apps are need iOS 4.0.0 or iOS 5.0.0. Please help me to upgrade my iPad (iOS 3.2.2) to iOS 4.0.0 or later ??? I have no idea. Thank you.

You can only update to the current version (i.e. 5.1.1) as that is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple.
You will need the latest version of iTunes on your computer - you can check if you are up-to-date via, on a PC, 'Help > Check For Updates'.
When you have that installed, connect the iPad to your computer and on your computer's iTunes copy any purchases off the iPad via File > Transfer Purchases (you may also want to copy photos off the iPad as well) and then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'. You may also want to copy off the iPad any important documents, notes, files etc e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.

  • How do you update the ipad 4.3.5 with a computer?

how do you update the ipad 4.3.5 with a computer?

Update it from iTunes on a computer as described at the bottom of this article; there isn't a Software Update option in General on iOS versions prior to 5.0. It can only be updated directly to the newest iOS release supported by the device’s hardware, which is iOS 7.1.1 for devices with at least 512MB of RAM.
The maximum iOS version for the third generation iPod touch and original iPad is 5.1.1.
