HTMLDocument to text

Is there an easy way to convert an HTMLDocument back into a text file with all the tags intact?

Right. Perhaps I wasn't being specific enough. I know how to save a website to a text file. What I need to know is how to convert a javax.swing.text.html.HTMLDocument back to text

  • Paste html4 in HTMLDocument.

    Hi,
    I've rewritten the paste function and if i detect a text/html flavor in contents of the system clipboard, i insert data in a htmldocument using text/html flavor (instead of string dataflavor).
    But many applications generate html 4 and htmleditorkit works with html 3.2
    So the result can be rather ugly because some tags aren't recognized.
    I would appreciate any help to solve this problem

    Hi,
    the only way to solve this is to implement own extensions/replacements to HTMLDocument, HTMLDocument.HTMLReader, HTMLEditorKit, JEditorPane and HTMLWriter. There were rumours that Java 1.5 (Tiger) due in late 2003 will have enhanced HTML support.
    Meanwhile see application SimplyHTML at http://www.lightdev.com/template.php4?id=3 for an example and documentation of how to do own extensions (SimplyHTML implements support for the SPAN tag and has some enhancement to table rendering).

  • Inserting big text in a JEditorPane / HTMLDOcument

    Hi.
    I have noticed a strange behaivour of a JEditorPane with an HTMLDocument in it.
    If i put a big text in it AT ONCE (setText() or insertString() or insetHTML, doesnt matter),
    the preformance of the whole app gets soooo slow, f.e if i type in just a single character afterwards, i takes about 3 seconds till it appears in the document.
    BUT if i put the big text into smaller pieces, f.e i paste in all the small text-parts, then i cant see
    any performance-problems afterwards.
    Has anybody an idea why it is like that ?!?
    Or do i something wrong when i put in the text at once ?
    (Im using the actual JDK1.4.0 and JRE1.4.0 b92)
    Thanks for help,
    greetings,
    Huni.

    Hello Andrea!
    You have to use a variable like TV or a text channel for every column you want to set. There is no direct way to fill a cell. In your script you only have to set the variable or channel. As you expected you have to use a vbCRLF to get multiline text. DIAdem will display multiline text but did not recognize it. That means that the program do not make a vertical alignment. The first line will be vertical centerted and all other lines will be below. Result: A white gap above the text! You have to 'play' with the cell and text height to get a half-decent text display. BTW: I made my tests with DIAdem 9.

  • Read Text into HTMLDocument

    Dear All,
    I have found that when i modify some html page source before loading into JEditorPane to display, sometimes I will get an exception. The case mostly occurs when the URL is not the exactly link for display, fir example, www.hotmail.com which will redirect to somewhere before browser can get the page.
    I have tried the following code:
    HTMLEditorKit Kit = new HTMLEditorKit();
    StringBuffer buf = new StringBuffer(URLSource);
    BufferedReader strRead = new BufferedReader(new StringReader(buf.toString()));
    try{
    Kit.read(strRead, doc, 0);
    strRead.close();
    }catch(Exception e)
    e.printStackTrace();
    strRead.close();
    Mostly, it works fine.
    The exception message is as follow:

  • HtmlDocument.insertString() no render html text :-(

    I have a chat pane that is a jtextpane.
    When a user writes into the chat i use document.insertString to append the user text.
    This works ok.
    But now, i want to add hyperlinks to the chat pane, so a user could double-click on them and browse on internet.
    So i set a HTMLEditorKit in the textPane.
    When a user writes into the chat i use document.insertString to append the user text....
    But if the text is html, like < html>< b>hello</b></html>
    In the chat pane appends exactly the same: < html>< b>hello</b></html>
    If i want to display the rendered html text i have to execute:
    chatPane.setText(chatPane.getDocument().getText(0,chatPane.getDocument().getLength())); <-- this works ok
    But this solution is more expensive if the text grows. And it is a chat, the text always grows!
    Is there another solution to append html text (and render it) into a jtextpane or jeditorpane ???
    Can i create hyperlinks without the htmleditorkit?
    Thanks in advance.

    I executed doc.insertString(0,"text",null);
    null is the AttributeSet. But i dont know which attribute set i have to use.

  • Highlighting text in JEditorPane using HTMLEditorPane

    I am using JEditorPane extending HTMLEditorkit. In the HTMLEditorkit when we use the span tag for highlighting the text of a line, it is just not showing it. It starts the color and ends it there and then. It looks like a small dot and doesnot spans the whole line.
    Is this a bug or something in JAVA 1.3.1. If anyone of you knows how to do it please let me know.
    I need it for a project which has a deadline.
    Thanks.

    JEditorPane is not rendering and HTMLDocument.HTMLReader is not reading the SPAN tag. In other words, the SPAN tag is not supported in Java. You can still use it by overriding the mentioned classes. My application SimplyHTML gives an example of how this can be done. Please visit http://www.lightdev.com/dev/sh.htm

  • How to modify text insertion position in HTML in a JEditorPane

    Hi all,
    Thanks in advance if anyone knows the type of code I need to look at to solve my problem.
    It involves the insertion point (in the actual HTML) when editing text in a JEditorPane using type html/txt.
    for example, lets say you start to add text by typing in a JEditorPane which already contains some text.
    The html is:
    <html><head></head>
    <body>
    <span>inside</span>
    </body>
    </html>
    which represents visually:
    inside
    The user places the caret (by pointing and clicking the mouse) after the word 'inside'.
    The user types the word 'outside'.
    The resulting html will look like this:
    <html><head></head>
    <body>
    <span>insideoutside</span>
    </body>
    </html>
    I would very much prefer it to look like this:
    <html><head></head>
    <body>
    <span>inside</span>outside
    </body>
    </html>
    Does anyone know how to influence the position of insertion in this way?
    Thanks again,
    sean

    Success!!!
    In a tiny bit of a hacky way.
    I will share my path to success. Though I am sure it could be improved. The solution (except for the minor hack to get it to work at all) is quite simple.
    And it did indeed involve the use of the DocumentFilter.
    So, to recap, My objective was to prevent the user from causing the addition of text within a certain span tag in my HTML when editing visual through a JEditorPane.
    Specifically, in my HTML I have a number of span tags identified through a type attribute. My span tags look like this:
    <span type="reserved">hello</span>
    I wanted to prevent the user from being able to type (visually) to cause either this:
    <span type="reserved">next text hello</span>
    or
    <span type="reserved">hello new text</span>
    or
    <span type="reserved">he new text llo</span>
    Initially, I had used a Caret listener, and moved the caret along, which, besides being hugely ugly, wouldn't fix the main problem of, even when the user starts typing after the word 'hello' on the visual pane, the text would be appended within the span tag, and not outside. Even though if I were to check my position (with the following code) I would be told it wasn't associated with the span attribute at all
              Element elem = hdoc.getCharacterElement(pos);
              AttributeSet a = elem.getAttributes();
              AttributeSet spanAttributeSet = (AttributeSet)a.getAttribute(HTML.Tag.SPAN);
              // if spanAttributeSet is not null, then we properly found ' a span '.
              // now we need to discover if it is one of OUR spans
              if (spanAttributeSet != null)
                    { // blah .... do something
                    }Regardless of what it told me with the above code, if i were to type in at that position (just after the hello) it would be added to the span tag. Which is what I didn't want.
    But the discovery of the DocumentFilter was what I needed to look at. Although, I had a very strange problem of having to reassign the document filter several times to the editorPane (later checks would see it as null). I don't know why I have this problem, but I have made a work-around by ensuring the DocumentFilter is still assigned by reassigning it every time the user moves the caret in the editorpane. Not nice, but prevents my filter from being ignored.
    The real solution:
    Using the DocumentFilter, I was able to solve both my problems of , not allowing the user to type inside the word 'hello', and preventing the text typed after the 'hello' being appended inside the span tag by the Document model.
    This is my code:
               myFilter = new DocumentFilter(){
                    public void insertString(DocumentFilter.FilterBypass fb, int offset, String string, AttributeSet attrs) throws BadLocationException
                         System.out.println("in insert string");
                           if (isCaretOnReservedObject((HTMLDocument)fb.getDocument(), offset))
                                throw new BadLocationException("Reserved position", offset);
                           else
                                    Object val = attrs.getAttribute(HTML.Attribute.TYPE);
                                if (val!=null && val.equals("reserved"))
                                     super.insertString(fb, offset, string, null);
                                else
                                     super.insertString(fb, offset, string, attrs);
                    @Override
                    public void remove(DocumentFilter.FilterBypass fb,
                            int offset,
                            int length)
                     throws BadLocationException
                         super.remove(fb, offset, length);
                      public void replace(DocumentFilter.FilterBypass fb,
                             int offset,
                             int length,
                             String text,
                             AttributeSet attrs)
                      throws BadLocationException
                           if (isCaretOnReservedObject((HTMLDocument)fb.getDocument(), offset))
                                throw new BadLocationException("Reserved position", offset);
                           else
                                    Object val = attrs.getAttribute(HTML.Attribute.TYPE);
                                if (val!=null && val.equals("reserved"))
                                     super.replace(fb, offset, length, text, null);
                                else
                                     super.replace(fb, offset, length, text, attrs);
               ((AbstractDocument)this.getInternalJEditorPane().getDocument()).setDocumentFilter(myFilter);
         protected boolean isCaretOnReservedObject(HTMLDocument hdoc, int pos)
              boolean retval = false;
              Element elem = hdoc.getCharacterElement(pos);
              AttributeSet a = elem.getAttributes();
              AttributeSet spanAttributeSet = (AttributeSet)a.getAttribute(HTML.Tag.SPAN);
              // if spanAttributeSet is not null, then we properly found ' a span '.
              // now we need to discover if it is one of OUR spans
              if (spanAttributeSet != null)
                   Object type = spanAttributeSet.getAttribute(HTML.Attribute.TYPE);
                   if (type != null && type.equals("reserved"))
                        // for our logging, we get the ref, which holds the source
                        // of our value later
                        System.out.println(elem + ": the value is: " + spanAttributeSet.getAttribute("ref"));
                        retval = true;
              return retval;
         }And now, when I attempt to type on the word 'hello', nothing happens (great!), and when I type after it, it is not assigned the span tag attribute, and we later find it (when outputting html) at the outside of the span tag.
    I don't know if there is a better way to do this, but it looks and works fairly cleanly so far.
    And thanks to stas for your reply...... Maybe this is what you meant. . it certainly was the attributes I needed to fiddle with here, and it gave me an extra hint of what to look for when researching the problem.

    I created a class that can be used to highlight Java source code. Most of the code is for handling multi line comments. If you just want it to highlight certain keywords then you can get rid of all that logic. In case your interested, the code can be downloaded from here:

  • How to print diffrent color and diffrent size of text in JTextArea ?

    Hello All,
    i want to make JFrame which have JTextArea and i append text in
    JTextArea in diffrent size and diffrent color and also with diffrent
    fonts.
    any body give me any example or help me ?
    i m thanksfull.
    Arif.

    You can't have multiple text attributes in a JTextArea.
    JTextArea manages a "text/plain" content type document that can't hold information about attributes ( color, font, size, etc.) for different portions of text.
    You need a component that can manage styled documents. The most basic component that can do this is JEditorPane. It can manage the following content types :
    "text/rtf" ==> via StyledDocument
    "text/html" ==> via HTMLDocument
    I've written for you an example of how a "Hello World" string could be colorized in a JEditorPane with "Hello" in red and "World" in blue.
    import javax.swing.JEditorPane;
    import javax.swing.text.StyleConstants;
    import javax.swing.text.StyledEditorKit;
    import javax.swing.text.StyledDocument;
    import javax.swing.text.MutableAttributeSet;
    import javax.swing.text.SimpleAttributeSet;
    import java.awt.Color;
    public class ColorizeTextTest{
         public static void main(String args[]){
              //build gui
              JFrame frame = new JFrame();
              JEditorPane editorPane = new JEditorPane();
              frame.getContentPane().add(editorPane);
              frame.pack();
              frame.setVisible(true);
              //create StyledEditorKit
              StyledEditorKit editorKit = new StyledEditorKit();
              //set this editorKit as the editor manager [JTextComponent] <-> [EditorKit] <-> [Document]
              editorPane.setEditorKit(editorKit);
              StyledDocument doc = (StyledDocument) editorPane.getDocument();
              //insert string "Hello World"
              //this text is going to be added to the StyledDocument with positions 0 to 10
              editorPane.setText("Hello World");
              //create and attribute set
              MutableAttributeSet atr = new SimpleAttributeSet();
              //set foreground color attribute to RED
              StyleConstants.setForeground(atr,Color.RED);
              //apply attribute to the word "Hello"
              int offset = 0; //we want to start applying this attribute at position 0
              int length = 5; //"Hello" string has a length of 5
              boolean replace = false; //should we override any other attribute not specified in "atr" : anwser "NO"
              doc.setCharacterAttributes(offset,length,atr,replace);
              //set foreground color attribute to BLUE
              StyleConstants.setForeground(atr,Color.BLUE);
              //apply attribute to the word "World"
              offset = 5; //we include the whitespace
              length = 6;
              doc.setCharacterAttributes(offset,length,atr,replace);
    }

  • Pasting in JTextPane adds the text in the next line not the cursor positon

    Hi,
    I have a problem with pasting the text in a JTextPane. The content type is text/html and the document is HTMLDocument. When I paste the text, it goes to the next line instead of inserting at the current cursor position. The problem is when pasting, the html writer adds a paragraph tag with the selected text. Can any one please help me with this issue for pasting a selected text in the position where I want, without loosing the character attributes and other html tags, but only the paragaraph tags?
    Thanks
    siju

    Hi Tariq,
    If you are specifying some .prt files(printer definition files) in the desformat, please examine them if you have set the width and height to proper values.
    Otherwise look at $ORACLE_HOME/reports/printers/dflt.prt (default file) and see if the width and height are set to proper values.
    Thanks,
    Siva B

  • Strange behaviour on text insert into a HTML pane

    Hi all,
    I am trying to fix a problem on inserting a span tag into an existing html page (in an EDITABLE JEditorPane).
    The behaviour:
    Assuming the cells in a table (3 rows, 2 columns) are numbered from 1 to 6, with cell one being the top left most, cell 2 top right, cell 3 middle left, etc.
    1. Inserting the text "<span></span>" in cell 4 causes during any attempt to later type into cell 5 the characters to be appended instead into cell 4, directly after the close span tag.
    2. The insertion in the first place behaves strange. If I have the caret positioned for cell 5 so that I can insert there
    (via the function void javax.swing.text.html.HTMLEditorKit.insertHTML(HTML Document doc, int offset, String html, int popDepth, int pushDepth, Tag insertTag) )
    even though the caret position is visible in cell 5, the insertion seems to take place in cell 4.
    I can sort of compensate for this by adding 1 to the offset. However, then when inserting into a line of text, for example, "the quick red fox jumped over the lazy dog"
    I insert directly before the 'j' in 'jumped', the insertion looks like this "the quick red fox j<span>..</span>umped over the lazy dog"
    So that is no solution.
    IMPORTANT! Just to prove it is not the span tag causing the trouble, if this span tag already exists in a cell on 'Load' of the html file, the strange behaviour is not observed.
    Something is going wrong here. It is me? Or is it a bug?
    Please help!!
    Here is a test app, and the test html you can use (place in current directory).
    Please test like this:
    1. run application (the html should be loaded into the pane)
    2. the span tag is programmed to automatically insert at cell 4 (by using the +1 method on the insert)
    3. another span tag was already existing in the html file, at cell 8
    4. Attempt to type into cell 5
    result: the text appears instead at cell 4
    5. Type into cell 9
    result: the text correctly is entered into cell 9
    See the difference!!

    fix another stuffed up attempt at a SSCCE.

    Well, I know nothing about HTML in JEditorPanes. I have never been able to figure out how insertions work.
    My comment was a warning to others. Some people (like me) avoid answering posting of this type for reasons given in the JavaRanch link. Others will answer anyway. Other might first check the other site to see if they are wasting there time, but they can only do that if a link was posted with the original question.
    The only suggestion I have is to repost the question, (since this posting is now completely off topic) making sure to then respond to this posting stating that a fresh question has been asked so you don't get a discussion going on in two places.

  • How to put Nested List in HTMLDocument  in JTextPane(JEditorPane)

    How to put Nested List in HTMLDocument in JTextPane(JEditorPane). I was trying to put nested Bullets and Numbering but found that not enough support is provided for it. The HTMLEditorKit behaves abnormally.
    There are two ways to do that:
    1) just extract the whole text by getText, but the problem is you don't have the postion where the cursor was when the event was triggered so u can't add ur text to it , even if u extracted the text at cursor there can be multiple copies, so no way...also if u change it and reinsert the whole text the atributeset for whole text is lost.
    2) So the only way is work with jugglery of Elements, which is full of bugs. I find it very difficult to move backward in it and insert a tag around a tag. Such a simple thing and almost no way. If anybody has any ideas please mail me.
    Thanx in Advance

  • HTMLEditorKit.Parser.parse() method is not giving a proper HTMLDocument alw

    Hi,
    I am developing util program for HTML filter, for my project. I have find using HTMLDocument we can do that.
    But when I created I found few starnge things.
    HTMLEditorKit.Parser.parse() method is not giving a proper HTMLDocument always. the below application will show the HTML one if you comment the String str ="" ; and uncomment the next line.
    I am wondering why this happens.
    import java.io.StringReader;
    import java.io.StringWriter;
    import javax.swing.text.html.HTMLDocument;
    import javax.swing.text.html.HTMLEditorKit;
    import javax.swing.text.html.HTMLWriter;
    import javax.swing.text.html.parser.ParserDelegator;
    public class HTMLDocExample {
    public static void main(String args[]) throws Exception {
    System.out.println("start the parsing");
    String data = "dsfdssfsdf<A HREF='http://yahoo.com'>HTMLEditorKit.Parser</A><h1>dsfdsf</h1><table border='1' class='test'><tr><td><input type='text'>dfsf</input><select id='id1' name='name1'><option>fff</option><option>aaaaa</option></select><input type='text'/><a href=#></a></td></tr></table>";
    String str ="" ;
    //String str ="<TABLE >test</TABLE><TABLE >test</TABLE><TABLE >test</TABLE><TABLE >test</TABLE><TABLE >test</TABLE><TABLE >test</TABLE><TABLE >test</TABLE><TABLE >test</TABLE><TABLE >test</TABLE><TABLE >test</TABLE>" ;
    StringReader br = new StringReader(data + str );
    HTMLEditorKit htmlKit = new HTMLEditorKit();
    HTMLDocument htmlDoc = (HTMLDocument) htmlKit.createDefaultDocument();
    HTMLEditorKit.Parser parser = new ParserDelegator();
    HTMLEditorKit.ParserCallback callback = htmlDoc.getReader(0);
    parser.parse(br, callback, true);
    StringWriter writer = new StringWriter();
    HTMLWriter hWriter = new HTMLWriter(writer, htmlDoc);
    hWriter.write();
    String outPut = writer.toString();
    System.out.println(outPut);
    System.exit(0);
    }
