Huge log file in leopard

after a day of using leopard, i noticed in console that one log kept on returning every 5 seconds with the same message

and the log file is starting to take up space and all I can do is constantly run a periodic script but that is temporary. So is there any solution to this?

Try running this command:
*sudo launchctl -w com.apple.nibbindd*
If that doesn't work, please run this:
sudo find / -name com.apple.nibindd*
The output file should be a file called com.apple.nibindd.plist
Just reenter the command above like so:
*sudo lauchctl -w /<path to>/com.apple.nibindd.plist*
I suspect you may have a file left over from the Tiger Netinfo Manager.
Edit: Corrected command

  • Reader 10.1 update fails, creates huge log files

Last night I saw the little icon in the system tray saying an update to Adobe Reader was ready to be installed.
I clicked it to allow the install.
Things seemed to go OK (on my Windows XP Pro system), although very slowly, and it finally got to copying files.
It seemed to still be doing something and was showing that it was copying file icudt40.dll.  It still displayed the same thing ten minutes later.
I went to bed, and this morning it still showed that it was copying icutdt40.dll.
There is no "Cancel" button, so this morning I had to stop the install through Task Manager.
Now, in my "Local Settings\TEMP" directory, I have a file called AdobeARM.log that is 2,350,686 KB in size and a file MSI38934.LOG that is 4,194,304 KB in size.
They are so big I can't even look at them to see what's in them.  (Too big for Notepad.  When I tried to open the smaller log file, AdobeARM.log, with Wordpad it was taking forever and showing only 1% loaded, so after five minutes, I terminated the Wordpad process so I could actually do something useful with my computer.)
You would think the installer would be smart enough to stop at some point when the log files begin to get enormous.
There doesn't seem to be much point to creating log files that are too big to be read.
The update did manage to remove the Adobe Reader X that was working on my machine, so now I can no longer read PDF files.
Maybe I should go back Adobe Reader 9.
Reader X never worked very well.
Sometimes the menu bar showed up, sometimes it didn't.
PDF files at the physics e-print archive always loaded with page 2 displayed first.  And if you forgot to disable the look-ahead capability, you could get banned from the e-print archive site altogether.
And I liked the user interface for the search function a lot better in version 9 anyway.  Who wants to have to pop up a little box for your search phrase when you want to search?  Searching is about the most important and routine activity one does, other than going from page to page and setting the zoom.

    Hi Ankit,
    Thank you for your e-mail.
Yesterday afternoon I deleted the > 2 GB AdobeARM.log file and the > 4.194 GB
    MSI38934.LOG file.
So I can't upload them.  I expect I would have had a hard time doing so
    anyway.
It would be nice if the install program checked the size of the log files
before writing to them and gave up if the size was, say, three times larger
    than some maximum expected size.
The install program must have some section that permits infinite retries or
some other way of getting into an endless loop.  So another solution would be
to count the number of retries and terminate after some reasonable number of
    attempts.
Something had clearly gone wrong and there was no way to stop it, except by
going into the Task Manager and terminating the process.
If the install program can't terminate when the log files get too big, or if
it can't get out of a loop some other way, there might at least be a "Cancel"
button so the poor user has an obvious way of stopping the process.
As it was, the install program kept on writing to the log files all night
    long.
Immediately after deleting the two huge log files, I downloaded and installed
    Adobe Reader 10.1 manually.
I was going to turn off Norton 360 during the install and expected there
would be some user input requested between the download and the install, but
    there wasn't.
The window showed that the process was going automatically from download to
    install.
When I noticed that it was installing, I did temporarily disable Norton 360
    while the install continued.
    The manual install went OK.
I don't know if temporarily disabling Norton 360 was what made the difference
    or not.
I was happy to see that Reader 10.1 had kept my previous preference settings.
By the way, one of the default settings in "Web Browser Options" can be a
    problem.
I think it is the "Allow speculative downloading in the background" setting.
When I upgraded from Reader 9 to Reader 10.0.x in April, I ran into a
    problem.
I routinely read the physics e-prints at arXiv.org (maintained by the Cornell
University Library) and I got banned from the site because "speculative
downloading in the background" was on.
[One gets an "Access denied" HTTP response after being banned.]
I think the default value for "speculative downloading" should be unchecked
and users should be warned that one can lose the ability to access some sites
    by turning it on.
I had to figure out why I was automatically banned from arXiv.org, change my
preference setting in Adobe Reader X, go to another machine and find out who
to contact at arXiv.org [I couldn't find out from my machine, since I was
banned], and then exchange e-mails with the site administrator to regain
access to the physics e-print archive.
The arXiv.org site has followed the standard for robot exclusion since 1994
(http://arxiv.org/help/robots), and I certainly didn't intend to violate the
rule against "rapid-fire requests," so it would be nice if the default
settings for Adobe Reader didn't result in an unintentional violation.

  • No console.log files under Leopard?

I just wanted to look inside an old console.log file from a view days ago, but I can't find it under Mac OS X 10.5 anymore. Will the Console Messages don't be saved in files under Leopard?
    Under Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger the files where saved in /Library/Logs/Console/501/console.log (and console.log.0, console.log.1, console.log.2, ...)

Well, from Leopard's own Console help:
The console and system log messages are stored in the log database in the ASL.db file. The console log messages come from applications run by the current user.
So no more textfiles, it would seem, and some Unix wizardry will probably be needed to extract and save the console log text from the binary database file before it is automatically rotated out.

  • Need to shrink huge log file

    Hi,
Have a database which is published using transactional replication.  The replication was broken yesterday due to a restore.  In order to try and fix this I issued  the "EXEC sp_replrestart" command and left it running, unfortunately
it has now filled up the disk the log sits creating a 250GB file.
    Getting this error:
    Msg 9002, Level 17, State 6, Procedure sp_replincrementlsn_internal, Line 1
The transaction log for database 'RKHIS_Live' is full. To find out why space in the log cannot be reused, see the log_reuse_wait_desc column in sys.databases
I really need to free up space on this disk and shrink the log, however I can't backup the database.
I've not tried shrinking the files yet as I can't do a full backup.
    Any ideas?
I don't care about replication at this point and will happily ditch it if it gets me out of this situation.
    Thanks

I disabled replication at the subscriber and then the publisher and disabled all the agent jobs.
Then I shrank the database and files to 1GB.  Phew, database is functioning just fine.
Need a solution to this.  Problem is the published database (managed by a 3rd party) is backed up, worked on and then restored as part of their software upgrade procedure.  In this case there is bound to be discrepency between the transactions
    in the log.
Learned a valuable lesson regarding sp_replrestart today though :-(

  • Console errors on startup OS X Snow Leopard Server, log files and pkgutil

I have OS X Snow Leopard Server running and there are a number of annoying console messages at startup and subsequent to that. A group of them appear to be related to write permissions for log file (last group). Not so sure about 1-3 below, if they are just warnings or something to worry about.

I have similar messages to your 1-3 in my console log as well. Haven't tracked down why yet.

  • Slow sync and huge synservices.log file

If you get slow sync and huge ~/Library/Logs/Sync/syncservices.log file, check that iSync is log logging everything it can.
    In terminal, type :
    defaults read -g SyncServicesLogEverything
if it returns YES, then here is your probem, just turn it off or delete this default :
    defaults delete -g SyncServicesLogEverything

Can you specify the versions of the iPhone OS, Windows XP and iTunes??

  • Log.nmbd is a huge, unremovable file

    Hi All,
Noticed that people have been reporting problems with Windows sharing and the creation of HUGE log fiiles. I think that I'm reporting the largest file to date: a whopping 85 GB file.
I've stopped Windows file sharing, checked/repaired permissions, fixed disk etc., but the problem is that I can not delete the file. I always get a kernel panic if I try to rm it, srm it, cp /dev/null log.nmbd, etc.
How can I recover what amounts to about HALF of my hard disk?
    Eric

Hi BDAqua, I tried ALL of the tricks short of buying DiskWarrior or something like that.
I tried single user mode, and then tried to delete the massive file. It locked up the computer again.
Eventually, I just had to reinstall my hard drive. Hah, this time I do not have Windows file sharing enabled -- i just bought my girlfriend a MacBook so that we don't have any more Windows machines.
Notwithstanding, there is something very very wrong with the deletion of these massive files. What is so bad about it is that I would imagine a number of situations where I would want a file this big -- digital video, HDF5 files, etc.
In short, if you can create it, you should be able to delete it!

  • Huge system.log file filled with over a million messages about NSATSTypeset

    Hi,
I just happened to notice the system.log file on my MacBook Pro laptop was absolutely huge - over 1.2 GBytes in just one day. Almost all of it is messages like this:
    Mar 31 12:26:23 macbook quicklookd[228]: <NSATSTypesetter: 0x146b40>: Exception * table 0x1473caa0 has block 0x147b3040 rather than 0x147b4850 at index 7573 raised during typesetting layout manager <NSLayoutManager: 0x124140>\n 1 containers, text backing has 16461 characters\n selected character range {16461, 0} affinity: downstream granularity: character\n marked character range {16461, 0}\n Currentl

and there are over 1.3 million of these messages!!!! There is a tiny bit of variation in some of the numbers (but not all). That is just a little bit more than the total number of files I have on the hard drive in the laptop, so it would appear that the quicklookd is doing something to each and every file on the computer. Any idea why all of a sudden these messages appear and why so many. I only have about 7 versions of the system.log files and none of them are even close to this big, but the one one thing I did do today that I have not in a few weeks is reboot my laptop because of another problem with the laptop screen not waking this morning from being put to sleep last night (was just black but computer was running and could login to it from another computer in the LAN it is attached).
Any ideas why this is happening, or is this something that always happens on a reboot/boot rather than waking from sleep. Why would the quicklookd be printing out so many of these messages that are almost exactly alike???
I have only had this MacBook for a few weeks, so don't have a good feel for what is normal and what isn't yet.
    THanks...
    -Bob

    Bob,
Thanks for your further thoughts and the additional information. My guess is that Quick Look does its file processing independently of whether or not or how recently the computer has been rebooted. The NSATSTypesetter messages filling up the log file are almost certainly error messages and should not occur with normal operation of Quick Look. I suspect that your reboot doesn't directly have anything to do with this problem. (It might have indirectly contributed in the sense that either whatever caused the need for the reboot or the reboot process itself corrupted a file, which in turn caused Quick Look to fail and generate all those error messages in the log file.)
In the meantime I may have a solution for this problem. This morning I rebooted in single user mode and ran AppleJack in manual mode so that I could tell it to clean up all user cache files. (I'd previously downloaded AppleJack application from http://applejack.sourceforge.net/ . To boot in single user mode hold command and s keys at startup chime. ... Run the five AppleJack maintenance tasks in order. The third task will give you the option to enter numbers of users whose cache files will be cleaned. Do this cache cleaning for all users.) In the six hours since I ran AppleJack I've seen exactly two NSATSTypesetter error messages in /var/log/system.log . This compares with hundreds of thousands in the same period yesterday. I just set an iCal alarm to remind me to report back to this discussion thread in two weeks on this issue.
    Best,
    Chris.
PS: Above you mention 7 log files. Are the older ones of the form system.log.0.bz2 ? If so they have been compressed. Just because they are small doesn't necessarily mean there are not a lot of nearly identical error messages. Uncompress to check. I haven't tried this because large files are very inconvenient to work with on my old iBook.

  • Sharepoint log files growing huge

Once again a SharePoint question :)
I ran the following script against our SharePoint 2013 farm:
#Specify the location of the CSV file here.
    $r = Import-Csv C:\folder\users.csv
    foreach($i in $r){
#The following line displays the current user.
    Write-Host "The URL is:"$i.Url
#Disables the "Minimal Download Strategy" feature under "Site Features".
    #Disable-SPFeature -Identity "MDSFeature" -Url $i.Url -force -confirm:$false
#Enables the "SharePoint Server Publishing" feature under "Site Features".
    Enable-SPFeature -Identity "PublishingSite" -Url $i.Url -force -confirm:$false
#Enables the "SharePoint Server Publishing Infrastructure" feature under "Site Collection Features".
    Enable-SPFeature -Identity "PublishingWeb" -Url $i.Url -force -confirm:$false
The csv file that is being imported contains about 2000+ rows with users' MySite links where we want to en-/disable several features.
The script does what it is supposed to do, but while running the script and reaching user No. ~15 the log files under "C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\Web Server Extensions\15\LOGS" starts to grow huuuuuuge (~5GB).
They are mostly filled with this:

I tried finding something on the internet on this but either my Google Mojo is gone or there is no one else posting about this.
Since we do not want to change the logging behavior of SharePoint (unless it is really necessary), I'd like to know if there is something wrong with my code? Is there some parameter I can use to suspend logging for this script? There must be something I'm
    doing horribly wrong :(
    Thanks in advance!
(If anything I posted is unclear please let me know since English isn't my first language)
EDIT: There is nothing productive happening on that farm. There is a web application for the MySites and one for a publishing portal (without any significant content).

It's because MS did a poor job on the SharePoint object model. You shouldn't need to call a 'dispose' method on any object in .Net, the garbage collector should automatically identify a no-longer required object and remove it. Unfortunately, and there might
be a reason for it, that isn't true for SPWeb or SPSite objects.
Evidently the Enable-SPFeature comandlet contains a SPSite or SPWeb object and fails to dispose of it.
You could try using Start-SPAssignment: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff607664%28v=office.15%29.aspx which some have found to be useful to deal with this. Another option would be to create a process that generates a new thread for each row in
the csv which will result in the objects being destroyed as that process ends.

    Hi,
I am getting the following error message in SQLNET.LOG file on the client machine. This is my upload program which takes few hours to complete and during the program run, the size of SQLNET.LOG file keeps on increasing and goes to 100's of MB and it contains only this error repeatedly.
But my program gets connected to Database and does the upload. But the size of SQLNET.LOG file grows like anything. Pls let me know what's going wrong.

    Hi,
Actually I thought this error is appearing in only one of the machines, but when I am figuring out, I found the same error in almost all the client machines.
Though the programs are running fine getting the database connectivity, I am not able to find why it is giving error showing connection through BEQ protocol.
Pls someone tell me why this is happening and how I will find out which protocol it is using.

  • Log file size is huge and cannot shrink.

I have a live database that is published with merge replication and a couple of push subscriptions. I just noticed that the log file has grown to 500GB. The database is in full recovery. We do weekly full backups, daily log backups. I cannot shrink the log
file back down to normal proportions. It should only be about 5GB. The file properties show an initial size equal to the current size, I cannot change that number and I don't know why it is so big now? How do I go about shrinking the log file. the normal DBCC
shrink and the SSMS GUI to shrink are not doing anything and say there is 0MB space free!!

As per your first posing log_reuse_wait_desc was LOG_BACKUP
and in 2nd REPLICATION . i am consfused
    if
    log_reuse_wait_desc  column
shows LOG_BACKUP then table log backup of your db, if it is REPLICATION
and you are sure that your replications are in sync then reset the status of replicated transactions
You can reset this by first turning the Reader agent off ( turn the whole SQL Server Agent off), and then run that query on the database for which you want to fix the replication issue:
    EXEC sp_repldone @xactid = NULL, @xact_segno = NULL, @numtrans = 0, @time= 0, @reset = 1
    vt

  • Help fixing a huge windowserver_last.log file

While using Omni Disk Sweeper, I discovered that my windowserver_last.log file is in excess of 8GB in size. I'm not very unix command savvy, but I am trying to reclaim the space without wiping something important. I'm unable to open the file using console because it crashes every time it opens that log. I have looked at the console and it has an error code that posted 25 times in less than a second. I've copied the error code below.
    2006-08-27 17:20:46.890 SyndicationAgent[1821] WARNING: BestCalendarDateFromString - can't interpret: 'Sun 27 Aug 2006 12:26:55 -800'
From this, I have posted the last 8 lines of code from the console as well. I have seen that thisw problem was encountered by someone before, but I don't know how to fix it without probably breaking my PB. If anyone can give me some guidance on how to fix it, or let me know if this is normal, thanks.

  • Replication Distribution log file huge 700gb

Hello to all, Got a replication issue here. I might have found the answer but I'm afraid to run it and want to check with experts first.
I have transactional replication set up on SQL Server 2012 sp1. 13 publications.
Problem: Distribution data file = 19gb Distribution log file = Ballooned to dangerous 700gb
Setup: 1) Transactional replication setup, continuous 2) 13 publications 3) Largest database = 200 gb 4) Distributor properties:  Transaction retention 0-72 hours  History Retention 48 hours 5) Subscriptions all configured as pull
subscriptions 6) Distribution DB recovery model simple 7) Distribution clean up: distribution job run fine in 13 min(kinda long though) 8) Agent history clean up runs fine (2 sec) 9) Expired cleanup job runs fine (17 sec)
I noticed a few setup inefficiencies and recently made this change: 1) Changed each publications from "never expire" to 120 hour retention
Manually ran some diagnostics: Segment Name Group Id Size in MB Space Used Available Space Percent Used distribution 1 19629.00 3635.81 15993.19 18.52 distribution_log 0 774523.06 741109.16 33413.91 95.69
    DBCC OPENTRAN
    No active open transactions
    Manually ran EXEC dbo.sp_MSdistribution_cleanup @min_distretention = 0,@max_distretention = 72 Removed 0 replicated transactions consisting of 0 statements in 80 seconds (0 rows/sec).
    DBCC Loginfo
    Returns 1104 rows
Select name, Log_reuse_wait_desc FROM sys.databasess  Name Log_reuse_wait_desc  distribution LOG_Backup  REPLuserdb Replication
Manually confirmed all data from source to subscriber has been replicated and is a match. The data is all there at the subscriber.
    Considering running the following command I read about in a few blogs: EXEC sp_repldone @xactid = NULL, @xact_segno = NULL, @numtrans = 0, @time= 0, @reset = 1
Then running the distribution cleanup job again or shrinking the log. Is there any danger in this,is this the right approach? THANKS!!!

Good idea changing the recovery model.  I may have also tried simply running the CHECKPOINT statement to see if that helped change status on some of those entries in loginfo.
I may have missed it in your description, but be sure to INCREASE the default growth increment of the log. I've seen many situations where a very small increment is left from db creation and it results in literally 100s of thousands of VLFs. Now that you've
got it shrunk, change the growth increment to try and avoid this in the future.
Verify that your publication has the "immediate_sync" property set to false.  Unless you add subscriptions frequently, this property should always be set to false as it lets the cleanup process cleanup transactions immediately after they have been replicated
to all subscribers.  This means that transactions can be cleaned up from the distribution database ahead of the retention period.  When set to "true" transactions are always retained for the full retention period which can cause the distribution
database to bloat unnecessarily.  There are situations where you want transactions retained (adding new subscriber), but I find it easy to work around those in most cases.
Regarding sp_repldone.  It would have probably been fine to run this and I can tell you that I've never seen it cause reinitialization.  You probably know that this procedure tells the log reader agent to stop scanning, or really that all of the
transactions in the published database log file have been scanned.  It will scan new activity after you run it with those NULLs.  When you run DBCC OpenTran in a replicated database, it tells you the oldest distributed LSN.  repldone basically
updates that value to the most recent LSN in the log - try it on an unimportant database with some activity and see how OpenTran changes.

  • Save Log file from Disk Utility App running from Recovery HD?

    Background:
I had an issue with QT and screen recording; it was coming out solid green. I read on Apple Support that I should restart holding down Command-R. I did that, booted into Recovery HD, then opened Disk Utility. I repaired permissions, then decided to repair my HDD for good measure. I noticed that Disk Utility did make a repair to my HDD. Something like "found 57" instead of "56" files in the directory on the HDD; directory needs to be updated. Not sure, I just remember those numbers… "56" is what the system knew of but there were really "57" on the HDD. I sound ignorant… I know.
After I rebooted QuickTime worked correctly (maybe merely repairing permissions was the solution) however another issue, I have been struggling with for years, was also resovlved!
I have been having an issue for years with an Icy Dock external enclosure in RAID 1 mode with my older 2009 iMac. The issue remained after upgrading from Snow Leopard to Tiger to Mountain Lion and resetting PRAM and repairing permissions and repairing it's HDD etc. many times over. After powering up the enclosure a message would appear: "The Disk you insterted was not readable by this computer." "Initialize…" "Ignore" "Eject". Then the volume would mount on the Desktop behind the warning and work perfectly. I would then click "Ignore". I had modified the old iMac with an internal SSD in place of the optical drive… at one point.
I recently sold that iMac and bought a 2012 iMac
Regardless I continued to have the same issue with the enclosure and my new iMac. However, after repairing the internal HDD today, the external Icy Dock RAID now mounts without giving me a warning to, "Initialize…" "Ignore" "Eject". This warning was appearing just before I repaired permissions and repaired the internal HDD on the iMac using the Recovery HD. In fact the reason I was tyring to use QT screen capture was to make a screen capture of the terminal window process while runing a "diskutil activity" command during powering-on my external enclosure to send to Icy Dock to troubleshoot this cross computer and cross OS incompatibility with their enclosure.
My external RAID enclosure wasn't even powered on during repair of the internal HDD?! So how could a brand new iMac's HDD directory be effected in such a way by an external RAID enclosure as to make changes to it's directory. And now how could an issue with mounting an external RAID enclosure be corrected by repairing the directory structure on the internal HDD on the iMac? Could it be a conflict with USB IDs? Are those written to the directory? The internal and external sharing the same ID and the external having to be unmounted and remounted using a new ID each time? How could it have been repaired? Lots of questions…
    Main Question:
Anyway,,, I want to copy the Disk Utility Log from my Recovery HD so I could see exactly what was repaired and report it to Icy Dock. But I am not sure if the log files are saved or not when rebooting from Recovery HD. Not sure how I could find the log file at this point. Are logfiles saved when running DiskUtility from the Recovery HD???
    Sorry for the length.

Oh crap. The enclosure was working properly, now it's exhibiting the same problem as before and I haven't even rebooted the computer yet. So, what's up?
