I accidentally formated the hfs+ partition to FAT

I accidentally formated the hfs+ partition to FAT.
That's right, bummer. Now, is there anything I can do?
Here is the scenario -
I cannot get it to mount or start.
I opened the case to pull the battery ribbon.
When the battery is connected there is a continuous loop of the initial boot. black screen with apple logo, hard drive continues to spin.
Is there anyway I can get it to mount to reformat it? God I hope so.
other thing I thought of is to buy a sata to usb converter but I don't think that would fit the tiny connector.

Start with trying to force the iPod into disk mode first, then connecting it to your computer and see if that makes it show up in iTunes...

I'm installing windows 7 64-bit on my imac which I've done before but I get a message that the partition is GPT even after I format the bootcamp partition.  I just upgraded my hard drive to a 3tb and I'm allocating 1tb for windows. How can I fix this?

No easy fix for a few reasons:
    1) Bootcamp requires a hybrid MBR for the partition table. That is: both an MBR and a GPT partition table at the same time with the GPT one having all partitions and the MBR one having only the ones that are relevant, but at most 4 of them (including the protective partition and the Macintosh HD one). Which leads us to:
    2) The MBR part of the hybrid partition table cannot work with 3TB hard drives. MBR is limited to 2TB.
I am working on a small EFI app that can boot Windows in EFI mode on a Mac and that would mean that you can go GPT only on your system. The progress of the app is slow due to the nature of EFI and for now requires that you do an unattended Windows install with slipstreamed graphics drivers, but we are adding VGA loading on top of EFI quite soon after the rest of the app stabilises. The status of the app is documented at:
Win7 x64 booting natively via EFI (no bios emulation)
Windows does actually successfully boot in EFI mode on most Macs (anything with a 64bit EFI should work), but does not have graphics support even if you load the driver due to the VGA pci registers not being set by the firmware. Furthermore, in Setup and Safe Mode, Windows uses VGA instead of GOP which is a failure by design since VGA is a BIOS standard and not really compatible without hacks with EFI. Other EFI implementations also add VGA compatibility at a high cost to the firmware complexity for the VGA cards available on the market that don't actually contain anything in their ROM except the VGA BIOS.
    My recomendations:
    1) Install on a second smaller hard-drive; or
    2) Wait for the EFI app to come out officially and use that to boot Windows Vista SP1 x64 and Windows 7 x64 (RTM and SP1) in the native EFI mode.
    3) Wait for Windows 8 which supports VGA-less booting acording to the AMD presentation at UEFI Plugfest.

You must use the Windows formatter to format your Windows partition NTFS. Please be sure you select the Windows partition otherwise you might end up formatting your OS X partition NTFS.

  • HELP, i accidentally formatted my OSX partitions trying to install windows 8 using bootcamp

i cant enter recovery mode (i tried using cmd+r but it gets stuck at mid bar) and my only other device in my home is a windows pc, how can i install my OSX again?? there is a way to do a bootable recovery usb in windows?? thanks in advance.

If your model is 2011 or later: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery.
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • Boot Camp formatting the windows Partition -XP- I DIDNT! NOW GOT BIG PROBS!

Well Hi everyone, here goes in public! *I didn't read the manual carefully enough*
So, got that out the way, when the XP disc finishes instal and restarts i get the blank dos screen with:
'disk Error, press any key to restart'
but my keyboard has been completely frozen, the only way to restart is a forced restart with the power button.
Even when i try a forced start from the mac os instal DVD, you know- restart - 'D' key all i get is the apple hardware test utility which works only with my mouse and doesn't go any further in helping free my keyboard. although it does say there's no problem with the hardware.
i have important info on my Mac partition and need to recover that.
Is there any way of freeing the keyboard so i can try again?
Any help will be greatly, and humbly, appreciated.
PS. I've already looked at other threads and they all seem to have working keyboards, if i can get mine working i may be able to follow their advice.

I've had to go through this a number of times, and it's just something that you cannot get around.
When you're setting up boot camp, if you choose 32Gb as your Windows partition, it will use the FAT32 format. When you boot from your Windows disk, as you would with a PC that you already know has a disk formatted to FAT32, you would select "Leave file system intact" under the format options. You cannot do this. You HAVE TO select "Format as FAT32".
If you leave the FS intact, it will install part of the OS and reboot, and you'll get this screen. What you would to then is hold the power button down for 10 sec, restart the machine and immediately press and hold the C key. This will tell the machine to boot from the CD, in this case, the Windows install disk. Once you do this, go in and tell the installer to format the drive.
If for whatever reason this doesn't work, boot back into OS X by restarting and holding the "Option/Alt", select Macintosh HD. Once OS X boots, find the boot camp assistant and give the Windows partition back to OS X, and start over.
So long as you DON'T select "Leave file system intact", you will not have to deal with this.

  • Help! Someone formatted the recovery partition!

Ok, so I bought this Satellite P305-S8814 off someone and I press F8 to see startup options and the option to Repair Your Computer option isn't there! Then I see it's set to dual boot two versions of Vista! The idiot obviously installed Vista over the restore partition! I want it like it just came from the factory so what do I do? I tried to find the original restore discs online but came up with nothing legit. Anyone know how to fix this?

  • Windows 7 Bootcamp refuses to format 20-gig partition to NTFS.

I just recently purchased a Macbook Pro 13-inch Retina at the close of 2012.  Have wanted to install Bootcamp (5.1) on it, since I installed Bootcamp on my old Macbook Pro from 2007.  Ran into a number of errors and roadblocks, but all were bypassed and there seems to be one final error that I cannot get around.
I am using an official copy, also recently purchased, of Windows 7 64-bit.  It's installed as an .iso on a 16-gig flash drive.  Upon starting the Windows installation on a 20-gig partition (created by the Bootcamp software), it asks me which partition I want to install Windows onto.  I select Partition 4, which says BOOTCAMP, and then select "Advanced Options," where I attempt to have it format the partition from FAT to NTFS.  I receive an error message stating that the "the recommended free space for installation is 24895 MB" and it refuses to format it.
There's no possible way that Windows 7 requires 25 GB of free space, I've done the research enough to know that.  Why would it tell me that??  What is preventing me from using the install software to format the Bootcamp partition like everyone else seems to be able to do?  Is there another issue that I'm missing?
P.S. Not sure if this is related, but there is an oddity in my hard drive's allocation of space: Disk Utility will only allow up to a 20 GB partition, and seems to think that the other 90 GB are necessary for my Mac's startup, even though I have approx 43 GB free, according to the information bar at the bottom of the Finder window.

20GB is way to small. Windows 7 requires at least 60GB of hard drive space. 20GB is absolute minimum just for Windows which also needs swap and data space.
Read and follow the Bootcamp Installation instructions. The instructions are available from the first screen when you run Bootcamp Assistant.

  • Windows 7 not recognizing HFS+ partition

Is there support for Windows 7 to read the HFS+ partition of the hard drive? If so, Windows is not seeing it. Also, does it only apply yo the internal drive or will it read external HFS+ formatted drives?

I installed 3.1 update it and it now reads the internal Mac partition.

  • How do I grow an HFS partition on an external USB disk?

I have a USB disk, MBR partitioned, with one ext4 and one HFS+ partition. There is 250GB of unpartitioned space following the HFS+ partition, into which I'd like to grow for Time Machine use.
    bash-3.2# diskutil list
    -snip-
    /dev/disk1
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:     FDisk_partition_scheme                        *1.0 TB     disk1
       1:                      Linux Backup                  549.1 GB   disk1s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Mackup                  233.1 GB   disk1s2
    -snip-
diskutil refuses to touch the partition, probably because it's MBR ("FDisk") partitioned:
    bash-3.2# diskutil resizeVolume disk1s2 limits
Error obtaining resizing information (is this a Mac OS 9 compatible "wrapped" HFS volume?)
How am I going to fix this? Assuming I am unable to copy the contents of my HFS partition to another temporary place.
    Thanks

I replaced my MBR with a GPT partition table using gdisk on Linux.
Now diskutil correctly identifies it as GPT:
    /dev/disk2
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *1.0 TB     disk2
1:       Microsoft Basic Data Backup                  549.1 GB   disk2s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Mackup                  233.1 GB   disk2s2
however it still refuses to touch it
    bash-3.2# diskutil resizeVolume disk2s2 limits
Error obtaining resizing information (is this a Mac OS 9 compatible "wrapped" HFS volume?)

  • Boot Camp "Quit and install later" corrupted the BOOTCAMP partition

I just had my new iMac delivered.
The first things I did was to run Software Update to install 10.6.8, then I installed 10.7.1 Lion and ran Software Update again just to be sure I got everything up to date as it should be. After installing a couple of applications via App Store and the web I set about to create a Boot Camp partition for my Win7 needs. When the assistant was finished (a new partition created and drivers saved to a USB memory stick) and told me it was ready to install Windows, but I choose Quit and install later (and oh, what I now regret that choice) because my Windows DVD was nowhere to be found (I should have looked a little harder).
Then when I later found the Windows 7 install DVD I launched Boot Camp Assistant again, but lo and behold when it tells me that I need to reformat my partions and start over from scratch. Boot Camp Assistant refuses to let me install Windows because I choose Quit and install later.
I have tried the following things to solve the problems:
Repair permissions and repairing the disk.
Start with the bundled OSX DVD to run fsck -fy followed by Disk Utility.
    Re-format the BOOTCAMP partition.
Boot from the Windows 7 DVD (which claims something along the lines that the partition does not support Windows installations).
Nothing works! Why? How do I solve this?

The past and having used whatever. FWB HDToolkit, Silverlining, $10K worth of scsi means??
windows requires that the partition table and format (GUID) has full functional MBR that Windows and Mac can work with.
Ever heard of take your best guess and double it for how much space to allocate? or no matter how good your partitions will always need to be changed.
Apple (that pdf guide?) is quite clear about one thing, which I usually but not here, take with grain of salt, that Boot Camp Assistant is a one trick pony to do the job of setting aside unfragmented free space for Windows.
ie, you can't use FWB Toolkit of SoftRAID 4.0 (excellent though it is!). Though Paragon CampTune (the company is rare, supports Boot Camp etc) and can be used.
If you created it now, but then you had 10.7 and Boot Camp 4, I could possibly get my head to imagine there could be an issue. And that is because every OS version has new changed partition table changes, making for this old (65 and going) mainframer to re-initialize drives whenever there is a change.
You can clone your system, format, and restore nice and clean with SuperDuper in a Jiffy. So why bother now? can't see it.
I understand people wanting 3 or more partitions. Wanting Windows to boot off external drive. Or use GPT and UEFT (that may happpen as 3TB drives and is beginning to be supported, but so far Apple and EFI are closed, proprietary, and GPT booting and EFI go hand in hand) but extra partitions is just... wishful.

  • I accidentally deleted my windows partition

I had created a 100GB partition for windows on my 500GB hard disk from BootCamp and accidentally deleted the windows partition and I've got that 100GB free that I cannot use anymore. The partition cannot be resized and that's it. Please suggest a way in which I can get rid of that free space and resize my hard disk without losing ant data.

    tug! wrote:
    there are 2 options here,
    1) use bootcamp assistant to delete your failed partition and reinstall windows. or,
The OP has already deleted it, can't delete it again
    2) using disc utility open your hdd (use the original branded name, not the short name of the same drive)
select "partition" highlight your failed partition, click the minus button then click apply. this will give you your 100GB back. from here you will be able to start over with bootcamp again if you wish.
Once more, the partition is already deleted, how can it be deleted again?

  • Accidentally reformatted the Mac Yosemite OS in my iMac Late 2009 model

    Hi Guys,
I have a problem as mentioned above.
I installed windows using bootcamp last night on my iMac, the because I was on the phone, I accidentally reformatted the mac partition (Yosemite OS), so currently I only have the windows when I tried to open the iMac.
I tried the shortcut keys to do internet recovery, but my iMac wont simply allow as it is late 2009 model.
Can you help me on how can I re-install again the Yosemite os and use the remaining disk capacity?
    Looking forward to your response.

    Hi Eric,
    THank you so much!
I am currently downloading yosemite in my macbook and the will create a usb bootable version of it.
So after this, i will just plug this in my imac and then a bootable installer will pop-up?
Can i just delete all the partition including this windows 7 and start a new one
will you guide me on the right process?
    Looking forward to your response.

  • Question About the S partition and Backing Up Content

Forgive me if this sounds stupid (and yes i did read online about this S partition business with thinkpads) but I am not sure if i had accidentally deleted the S partition or it is hidden and I am not able to see it. When I go to my computers, the only drives I see are C and W(W is my ultrabayIII added 500gb harddrive). I do not see a S partition. The Q partition I deleted. But when i go to the computer management location, I see: "SYSTEM_DRV with no Drive Path Letter (strange...), a Windows7_OS(C  and my SecondHDD(W.....and no S partition.....does that mean that my S partition is the SYSTEM_DRV or did I unknowingly deleted it.
    And another question:
Since I no longer got the Q partition, what does that mean I lost?? Does this mean that I am not able to restore my thinkpad to the original factory default with the factory-installed programs and drivers?? (even the faulty NVIDIA driver that gives bsods? lol?) Though I did see something that came with windows 7 called Create Repair Disk.....does this mean that it acts like a windows 7 CD which allows me to boot from CD and fix or reinstall windows 7???
sorry for this post being lenghy XD but thanks in advance for the responses.

I know we can clearn LR history on a particular image by clicking "clear all" in the history panel.  Is there a way to do this for all images w/o having to go through all of them?  I don't want LR to keep track of every little thing I did on every little image; if the development is significant, I would use virtual copy or snapshot.  I think having all the history info is waste of space and may slow down LR.
Each history step could be a very small amount of space in the catalogue database. I'm not sure what you mean by "slow down LR." Slow down how? What activities or gestures will be impacted?
I am hearing you want to reset all settings to some large selection of your images , excepting some or all virtual copies or those with snapshots. It might be better to work with temporary catalogues, merging those into a master catalogue in a selective manner.

Perhaps the preview cache? You can also check to see if your raw cache is in there, too.  I assume your managed photos are in a different directory tree (or trees.)

  • MacBook Pro HFS+ Partition not mountable in Win 8.1 after removal of FileVault2

I did not read the manual and installed Windows 8.1 Pro on Mavericks on a Macbook Pro. I left FileVault2 enabled. As expected, the HFS+ partition would not show.
I then removed the FileVault2. But the partition is still not mounted. The HFS+ Windows driver works, since external HFS+ drives (Thunderbolt and USB) mount fine. In admin tools, the partition shows fine, but the option to assign a drive letter is dimmed.
I did a disk utiltity repair, but it also did not solve the problem.

right, that's fine, we've encrypted both ways - OSX (filevault) first then Windows (bitlocker) and vice versa - both times the 'visibility' of the other partition behavior is consistent
    if both are encrypted
you cannot see either partition from the other OS
you cannot see Windows as a startup disk in OSX system preferences
you CAN see OSX as a startup disk in Windows boot camp control panel

  • Peculiar problem with playing media off of an HFS+ partition

    Hi guys,
I have Arch Linux installed on my Macbook Pro, and I need to play the music and videos off of my HFS+ partition in Linux. I want to use VLC and Banshee, but both seem to be having problems with this.
    Here is the issue:
    1. I can read/write to the HFS+ partiton as a normal user
    2. I can play music and videos with mplayer off of that partition
    3. However, VLC will not open/play anything off of that partition
    4. Banshee marks the music files that I have imported from that partition with an 'X' when I try to play them and does not play them
    5. VLC and Banshee will play anything on my Linux partition (including the same file with the same permissions)
I can't seem to figure out why VLC and Banshee refuse to play anything off of that partition even though I have read/write permissions to it. Mplayer works fine, though.
    Please help!
