Many system actions will misbehave, given an inaccurate date. If you cannot open System Preferences you can reset your system date and time using Terminal.
Please read everything that follows before proceeding. Write them down if necessary because the effects of setting a preposterous system date are unpredictable.
Quit System Preferences, force quit if necessary: OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit
Open Terminal - it is in your Utilities folder and looks like this
You can find Terminal by using the Finder's Go menu and choosing Utilities, then double-click the Terminal icon.
At the prompt, you will be typing a command resembling the following:
sudo date mmddhhnnyyyy
... but you must substitute the actual date and time in the command that corresponds to the date format used for your location. In other words if your custom is to use a date like 16 December 2013 then reverse the mm and dd values.
Substitute numerals in the above command according to the following:
mm = month
dd = date
hh = hour (24 hour format)
nn = minutes past the hour
yyyy = year
Each of those values must be two digits except for the year which can be two or four digits. As an example if the current date and time is December 16, 2013 at 9 PM your command will be the following:
sudo date 121621002013
or
sudo date 1216210013
Either one will work.
To recover from your inability to use System Preferences to set the date and time, the value entered does not have to be precise, it just has to be approximate.
Enter that command using the actual time and date for your location and in the appropriate format, then press the Return key. Terminal will ask for your Admin Password - the same one you use when you log in to your Mac. Type it and then press the Return key. What you type will not appear, not even with •••• characters.
To determine if your change was effective just type the date command and press the Return key. Terminal will reply with the date and time. If it appears correct and in the correct format, you should be able to open System Preferences > Date & Time once again. Selecting the "Set time and date automatically" and choosing an appropriate time server will adjust your Mac's system clock to the precise time.

I bought a Mac mini from my company as they were closing our office and leaving all of us in a state of unemployment. Now I'm trying to setup the admin user account for my Girlfriend's son, for whom I purchased the unit. As he is new to mac, I'm trying to set it up for him. However when I go to the account panel in system preferences, I am unable to change anything without entering an admin password. Nor can I find a setup assistant to treat it as a new mac. What are my options from here? The Mac mini 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running OS X Version 10.6.8
If the company did not supply you with that Mac's original System Install DVD, you really ought to purchase a Snow Leopard DVD from Apple since you are likely to need it in the future.
Please read everything that follows before continuing. If you have only the one computer you should print this for reference.
Power on or restart your Mac.
At the chime or grey screen, hold ⌘ and S on your keyboard to enter single-user mode.
At the localhost:/ root# prompt, type
fsck -fy
and press Return.
This is a simple check for file system integrity and is optional. It may take a few minutes to complete. Be patient. If you get concerned that it has stalled press the Return key. When the integrity check completes pressing the Return key will result in the localhost prompt again.
At the localhost:/ root# prompt, type each of the following lines, exactly as written, one line at a time, each line followed by the Return key. There is a single space preceding the first "slash" ( / ) character in each line:
mount -uw /
rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
reboot
The Mac will restart, and then take you through the entire setup and registration process that a new Mac presents to a new user. Any pre-existing user accounts are still available, but without their passwords they will not be useful to you.
Do not elect to transfer your information from another Mac. When you get to the "Do You Already Own a Mac" screen, select "Do not transfer my information" and press Continue. Have your existing Apple ID and password ready - do not create a new one unless that's what you really want to do.
When it completes, log in under that new account. Use System Preferences > Accounts (or Users & Groups) to delete the User accounts that you no longer need. -

I made a big mistake to change the setting of my Mac book pro to "me only". Now ofcourse It cannot open the login page, for how would the mac know it is me? How can I change the setting back to "everyone"? I have back up in the past but the last month I have not. I really want to keep the data.
So how can I go in and change the setting, It stays ofcourse at the apple screen with wheel. All info is there and the computer works fine, just cannot use it or have been able to log in.wjosten is spot on. If you really want iCloud, then you will need to acquire a new or second hand MBP that can run Lion.

i have a mac os x ver. 10.5.8 2x2.8 quad. my start up disk is almost full. can i change my start up disk from the original hard drive to an additional hard drive i added in Bay 4?
Always want to keep the boot drive with more free space than may seem necessary for performance and to function at its best, 30-40% free or even 50% is not excessive.
Ideal is to separate your system from your data.
You should always have bootable backup / clone of your system
Don't use a green drive for system or data though.
When you are done cloning system and/or data, remove the old original and keep as backup.
Then move the system drive to #1 - no matter what you want to reset the default boot volume to where the system is.

By staying with 10.5.8 you are not going to receive security updates, might want to consider 10.6.8. -

My Mac can't find the volume " Data" on Time Capsule, Also I can't find with the disk-utility program the hard disk in the Time Capusule.
So I can't format the disk in the Time Capsule
Deconnevt and then connecting the power tp the Time Capsule gives also no solution.
What can I do?
JoeI listed the commands.. that is how you manually mount the disk.. follow exactly the commands I gave you.
In finder use top menu, go, connect to server.
Type in the following.
AFP://TCname or AFP://TCIpaddress (obviously you replace with the actual name or the actual IP address).
If that fails..
try
SMB://TCname
Here is the screenshot.
tardis4 being the name of my TC.
It should then ask you for your credentials.
And it should remember them in the keychain and be able to then get TM to connect. -
