I don't update anymore; what's my prognosis?
I've decided to ignore all updates from now on. I'm on iOS 5, Snow Leopard, Airport Extreme with 2 Express routers (one 'n' and one 'g' for music). I'm off of MobileMe (except for email), and have decided to forego iCloud.
I've learned from experience with many Macs that, every time I do a software update, the computer uses more memory, the battery doesn't last as long, performance slows, apps no longer work, miscellaneous pesky problems crop up. I used my PowerBook for 6 years. The only reason I replaced it was because, frankly, Flash killed it. I was still using OS 7 apps, and perfectly happy with them. Now I hear lots of complaints about Lion (look at the unusually high percentage of 1-star reviews on the App Store, so it seems like deja-vu. Skype on the iPhone is another good example of a downward spiral of qualtity with each update.
Summary:
I will not longer update anything. Software updates are stacking up; I ignore them.
My MacBook Air (late 2010) is snappy fast, everything works, battery life is excellent, it boots in 15 seconds.
iOS 5 works fine, but I'm also ignoring any update intended for Lion and iCloud compatibility.
My wireless network works great. I never have to reboot.
Most importantly, I have over a dozen PowerPC apps that require Rosetta. They all work. Ahhh, nice.
I manually sync my contacts and calendar with a USB cable.
In other words, I'm happy. HOWEVER, here's my question:
How long can I "live in the past" like this? Besides the (remote) possibility that I might be vulnerable without doing security updates, what is the downside to this strategy?
I hear both good things and bad things about Lion and iCloud. The good things I don't seem to care about; the bad things are things I would find deal breakers. Am I being a Luddite for not moving to Lion, and iCloud? I'm not a "sharer" of photos and music between devices, I have other apps that sync what I need, I don't buy iBooks, I don't buy music on iTunes, I don't use Twitter. What''s going to "break" first, in your opinion?
I think in previous incarnations, people would have jumped all over you for your approach, but the Lion operating has generated decidely mixed or even negative reviews from users. So no one seems to disagree with you. I think many folks are simply staying with 10.6 and waiting to see if OS 10.8 is better than 10.7. I've mostly avoided upgrading OS's, or when I do I jump over one version completely because I've waited long enough that I'm two versions behind.
Here are the things that will/would motivate me to update the OS:
* incompatibility with MS-Office (I'm not a MS-Office fan but I do need to use it)
* incompatibility with flash or other tools needed to view modern web content (this might be a while as I am still using several different Macs, the oldest being a 2005 PPC iMac with 10.5.8 and an fairly old/outdated flash, but it seems to still do ok with most web content). Our 2008 Intel Core 2 Duo iMac runs 10.6.8 and can do just about anything we need -- like you, I decided not to go to Lion because it didn't look like much of an improvement.
* incompatibility with various commercial software, such as TurboTax, or with web sites I use to manage financial accounts and such things
We got my daughter a new Macbook Air just before she started college, and Lion plus a new Macbook Air model came out a month later. I am glad now about it actually, I think some of the Lion "issues" would have annoyed her greatly (especially the odd dropping of wireless access points under Lion, everyone is on wireless at colleges now). I'm hoping that the 10.8 OS will be better than Lion. We had (probably still have) a certificate for a free Lion upgrade but we decided not to use it.

Even if you could upgrade, Lion does not support Power PC apps / Rosetta.

New Macs come with Lion pre installed. If you can purchase one at some point that way you'd still be able to use the apps you mentioned on the PBook and have another Mac running Lion. -

When I use find file http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/30073/find-file (which does tend to find files that "Finder" can't), it's not coming up with any other itunes library files that have been modified in the past week, which I know it would have been - unfortunately, I don't have a very recent backup of the hard drive. It would be a few months old so it wouldn't have the complete library on it....any ideas? I'm wondering if restarting the computer might help but have been afraid to do so in case it would make it harder to recover anything...I was looking at this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4211589?start=0&tstart=0 in the hopes that it might have a helpful suggestion but it's definitely a different scenario.

Group policy of Trusted Sites don't update on some machines
We have some machines which the trusted sites policy don't update anymore. Where all the other computer do update their list of trusted websites.
They are in the same OU and receive the same policies. But when I compare an export of the registry of the trusted websites I can see a clear difference.

apply the GPO settings.

Please run the following command on the problematic workstation and clients which work fine to check the difference of the applied GPOs.
Gpresult /h > C:\temp\gpresult.html (“C:\temp\”is the path of the gpresult.html, you can set it yourself)
This file gpresult.html is used for checking the resultant of Group Policy information

It should be update every 10 minutes.
But after I insert 100 thousand records, I find it don't update. What's reason of it ?Have you traced a session doing the refresh to see
where the time is being taken? I'll wager it's in the
LOB processing, but having actual data to back that

What data type is the XML document stored in? I'm
guessing a BLOB from your syntax since you didn't
include the table definition. Why would you store XML
in a BLOB rather than a CLOB?

Something may have to give here. Storing character data, an XML document, in a BLOB column and then trying to parse the XML document is going to be slow. Given your transaction volume, storing the data in a reasonable data type may be necessary to get the sort of performance you need. At a minimum, doing development against a data model that (presumably) everyone agrees is incorrect is going to introduce unnecessary overheads that are likely to be noticable.
If you're storing 100,000 XML documents, you should probably be using XML DB functionality rather than storing data directly in LOBs but if you're going to store the data in LOBs, at least use the right type.
Have you considered using an XML parser to parse the
XML document rather than trying to use SUBSTR and
INSTR?

of them ? Thanks a lot.You didn't indicate the Oracle version. Assuming you're on 10.2, there are a variety of packages. A quick search on http://tahiti.oracle.com for DBMS_XML turns up a number of packages. DBMS_XMLParser is one option, though it only takes CLOBs, so you'd have to convert everything from a BLOB to a CLOB in real time. DBMS_XMLQuery would be another option (though again you'll be incurring BLOB to CLOB conversion overhead).
That's going to be substantially more efficient.

Reasonable suggestions are likely to begin with getting the data model right. Very little good comes from trying to handle large transaction volumes with incorrect data models.

Eventually, and I'm talking maybe 1 or 2 years from now, you may start to find that you cannot update Apps anymore or that some service based Apps may no longer be supported.
But as it is now, nothing is going to happen if you choose not to upgrade, and you can continue to use your phone just as you have. Its not going to implode or anything . -

What model iPod do you have? If yo have a 2G iPod. many developers when they updated their apps to support iOS 5 and 6 dropped compatibility for iOS 4.2.1 and earlier.

Ever since I updated my Mac to Maverick it has become exceedingly slow everywhere. Also annoying, when I go into Applications to open something, it now automatically opens 3 things I don't need. What can I do to fix this?
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

Why can't I minimize more than 2 notepads in FF? I used to be able to minimize as many notepads as I wanted. When I do research on a topic I keep many notepads open until I am finished. FF must have done an update & now I can't do that anymore. Is there a setting I can change that will enable me to do that again?
Also at that time, the length of sentence I am typing changed.
It doesn't seem to have any limit to how far it can extend to the right.
Please help. I am not very techy & don't understand Computerese.

Thank you so much for all your suggestions & helpful links to get help. I am not very computer literate. I have taken many classes over the years I've had a computer but I am still only a beginner.
I want to tell you that I found a solution to my problem. I finally realized that maybe FF was not the problem but Wind. 7 on my new comp. I went on the 7 Forums & found another person who had the same problem & the answer was simple all I had to do was to right click on the Notepad icon & it would bring up a new Notepad & I could open & minimize as many as I want. I had moved the Notepad icon to my taskbar from the Start menu when I got my new computer.
I have one more question for you. The notepad 2 program was mentioned there along with several others. I think it was about that prog. that someone said that it could open many notepads & when you closed the comp. the notepads would not disappear. Do you know if it was that program? Also is it possible to use that program the same way as I used the original Notepad? There are so many technical options on that program that I didn't understand. All I want to do is open the Notepad & copy & paste my notes in it & minimize them. Not losing them if I shut down the comp. would be real benefit to me. I believe that is the same prog. you recommended to me. Since you seem to understand tech things I thought maybe you could tell me if that is possible?
