I have recently bought macbook air, previously i was using macbook pro 13". I have a problem in accessing my external hard disk, on which i used to take backup through time machine on my earlier macbook pro. I am not able to access the hard disk.

My new macbook air is not even detecting the external disk, leave alone reading it. I have important documents as time machine backup on the external disk. Please help in resolving this issue.
Thanks

  • How can i gain access to my data on a Time Capsule after a fresh install of Mavericks? I can't access any backups through Time Machine... They appear purple/transparent, and I can't even select them to view their contents. PLEASE HELP!!!

So, I've got several thousand photos, and a decent amount of videos of my daughter, along with a lot of stuff for work stored on my Time Capsule, and now I can't access any of it. I did a fresh install of Mavericks on my MacBook Pro last week sometime, and haven't been able to figure out how to get my files back. Please Help!!! My daughter is 2 and a half, and every picture/video I have of her is locked on this thing. I was planning on making some photo/video projects fo my wife for Christmas, and now I'm definitely not going to be able to pull it off. Her birthday is at the end of January, though, so if I could have it by then, that would rule!
Basically, the bar on the right of the screen has some gray dates, which I can access (all backups after the Mavericks install), and purple dates that go all the way back to March (when I originally purchased and began using the TC) which deny me access/viewing. It's possible that I created a slightly different user name when I reset my MacBook, which I guess is most likely the cause, but I have no idea what to do now to correct it. Thanks for taking the time!

    Mavericks does really nasty stuff..
Try manually mounting the sparsebundle and extract the files you want.
    Yet another Pondini reference. http://pondini.org/TM/15.html
We have avoided Mavericks you see knowing that it would cause these kinds of issues..
You never ever load a new OS without doing a disk image beforehand.. TM is not reliable enough or trustworthy to be depended on.
If none of the above work..
I would get a USB drive on the computer and install Mountain Lion or whatever OS you had before you unfortunately upgraded to Mavericks.. Then use TM from that decent installation but mount the sparsebundle and choose the backup from a date well before mavericks was installed.
Once you have extracted the files.. or even done a full restore you might be able to extract the files you want.

  • Disk not ejected properly while making a backup through time machine

Hi everyone. I'm trying to make a backup by using time machine on an external hard drive LaCie of 2 TB. However, after storing 5 to 10 GB the backup stops and I get a message window saying that the disk has not been properly ejected and that I have to eject the disk before turn it off. Then I thought it was a format problem, I went to the disk utility and I chose the Mac OS extended (journaled) format and the GUID partition table since my Mac is intel-based. I started the backup again and I got the same message window saying that I desconected improperly my external drive. The strange thing is that in both cases the backup seems to be okay at the beginning and stores 5 to 10 GB, more or less, then it stops and the message window shows up. Then I went further, I thought I could fix the problem by completely erasing the disk; I went to the disk utility and in the erase tab I chose the Zero Out Data option in the security options. The system starts erasing the external hard drive, but after a while other message window shows up saying that there was an error eliminating the disk because of a POSIX reports, that the operation could not be completed and that memory could not be assigned. Does anyone know what's going on? What am I doing wrong? Thank you in advanced for your support.

Most likely, there's a damaged/corrupted file on your Mac that Time Machine is choking on.
Erase the disk (quick erase is almost always fine) and start over.
If the backup fails, See #C2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.   It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.    If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup (especially the destination for the backups), what you've done, and the results.
EDIT: I should add, sometimes when Time Machine has a problem, it force-ejects the drive.

to to do HDR photography.  Is there a plug in or something i can get for this?

You can use File >> New >> Photomerge Exposure
You won’t get the same result as from the more powerful CS6 but it will give you a similar result from multiple exposures.

  • Complete time machine restore from earlier date to latest date

    Hey everyone,
my 9-month old harddrive died on me 2 weeks ago. I'm living in Argentina at the moment, roughly half a world away from my installation disk. My backup drive has been sent over from Germany now and I managed to get a new (overpriced) harddrive over here.
After I couldn't get a hold of the MAC OS X CD quick enough, I got an Apple Approved Technician to install Snow Leopard / do a complete restore of my backup through Time Machine.
I've just come home and sadly realized though, that they did the complete restore of the earliest backup from March 2012 and not the latest from September 2012.
When I open time machine, it shows the latest back-up date as September 28th on the right hand side but all dates later than March 1st are greyed out and i can't click on them. Though all those files from the latest back-up are still visible in Finder on the external backup harddrive .
I've searched for ages now, trying to find someone that has the same problem, but can't find anyone.
Please can somebody tell me what I need to do to be able to do a complete back-up restore to the latest date aka September 28th?
(I still don't have an actual MAC OS X Disk as they did everything in their office)
Anyone that's ever lived in Argentina can probably imagine my frustration and that I'm close to a heartattack - so any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers, Falko

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
AFAIK, you can only restore a TM backup onto an identical (or nearly so) computer. I don't think the Intel backup will work at all on a PPC. The drive partitions schemes are incompatible - GUID vs APM and none of the drivers or other hardware-related software components will work, not to mention many of the Intel-only apps.
The best you can do in install Leopard on the PPC and see if you can migrate from the TM backup.

  • How do I delete all backups of Time Machine in OSX 10.7.2?

I had some huge photo files (100gb) that were on my computer for a few weeks and have now been processed and deleted. I suspect that Time Machine backed them up on my external hard drive. How can I delete all backups from Time Machine and start with a fresh series of backups?
    Tks

    That would work also.
I like to reformat the disk just to rebuild the directory when I clean one.

  • How to backup a Time Machine backup

How can I best backup a Time Machine volume?
After a house fire that luckily didn't reach the computers, I was thankful that I did have backups so could be sure it wasn't a data disaster, but it got me thinking. The server providing the TM volume is in the same room as the Macs being backed up and if the fire had entered that room, all would have been toast, backups and all. So I want to setup an 'off-site' backup to avoid this potential problem. In fact, it will be another Mac in a nearby but separate building and I want that to keep a copy of the Time Machine volume. In fact it really wants to be a mirror of the TM volume so it could be used as the TM volume instead of the original (which would of course be unusable, hence the need to use the backup).
Since all TM backups are across the network, each client Mac has its own large backup file and any backup program that simply checks modification dates would therefore copy the files across every time as they would have changed, whereas Time Machine itself would only be copying a few changes each time.
Anyone any bright ideas about the best way to implement such a backup copy of a Time Machine backup volume?

    Barney,
I have a question along the same lines and it might be of help to the author of this thread.
What about a Time machine RAID?
I am thinking about upgrading my 24" iMac to a 27" with much larger 2TB HDD. My current machine has a 500 GB. I back up to two WD MyBook Studio 500 GB drives which I have partitioned. One partition is for TM archives (which is my understanding of what TM makes: additive incremental archives) and the other partition is for weekly bootable duplicates I make with Carbon Copy Cloner.
I rotate one drive off site every week just in case of the dreaded house fire.
This set up seems to work okay in that I have two sets of backups, with one off-site at all times. The most data I stand to lose is one week, since I switch my backups every Monday.
However, the only drawback is that the Time Machine archives are not the same. They both contain the original TM back up I did way back when I first set up the drives, but since I am rotating the drives off site every week, they contain staggered back ups from thence forward. If I go to look for a file that I only had on my computer for one week and later deleted, that file will only exist on one TM drive and not the other.
So, long story short, a three disk RAID seems to be the best way to achieve TM back ups that are identical. Two drives would be constantly connected to the computer with the third drive rotating off site.
However, I have read on other threads that people were having problems using TM with a RAID set up.
Does Time Machine play well with RAIDs? Is there a particular RAID set up I should use? Can I partition the RAID in order to separate my TM archives from my bootable duplicates? Will the machine boot from a duplicate stored on a RAID?
Forgive all the monotonous questions, but I have never set up a RAID before so I am a total novice.
    Cheers!
    Thomas

  • After clean install of mavericks - i cannot restore my backups on time machine (Mountain Lion)

the installation went perfect but during set up, mavericks could not find my time machine on external hard drive. i found a post saying that mavericks creates time machine files that conflict with my latest back up.
i can access my last back up using finder but that doesn't help get my applications/programs back. i've tried using migration assistant and it cannot find my time machine either.
does anyone know how to fix this?

'depeting' is a typo for 'deleting'.  I don't seem to be able to edit this out above

I have recently bought an 8Gb macbook pro. If I update it to mountain lion will it take half of the memory I have?

Well thats upto you but before any major update a backup is recommended, you should also be backing up your system as a matter of good housekeeping.
Time machine makes this very easy, you will require an external disk at least twice the size * of your hard drive in you Mac. Connect it to you Mac with USB, Firewire or Thunderbolt, whatever you wish. You can use Time Machine to take a backup of the hard drive.
If you are unfortunate and have a hard drive fail you can recover all your data very easily.
Apple also sell a product called Time Capsule http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/ but I just use an External Disk.
*** Twice the size may be a bit excessive, it depends on how full your hard drive is and how much you expect it to fill.***

Exclamation mark appears instead of photo. Recently upgraded from i mac to Macbook air and all was transferred over. I have run all the repair and rebuild functions in iphoto. Any other solution?

Since iPLM failed to help try the following:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
