I lost my iphone and would like a new one without paying $600

I lost my iphone 1 month into my 2 year contract. I have my old phone that I've had for the past 3 years while I was waiting for the iphone to come to Verizon, but I'd really like to replace my iphone. I am kicking myself for not getting the insurance on it, but I can't do anything about that now. I'm the 2nd line and the primary line is eligible for an upgrade, but if I use that my husband is stuck with his 2 year old phone for the another 2 years.
Is there anyway around all this or do I need to get a 2nd job to be able to afford to replace my iphone?

Because Verizon requires a monthly data package on smart phones, your old number will be charged until you replace it while under contract.
When  adding the new number to get another iphone, transferring old number to your new iphone, you may be able to then transfer the "new"  number to a basic device, minimizing costs. Ask if there is a penalty for dropping the monthly data package. Verizon has a $29.99/Unlim MB data package or the limited time promotional $15/150 MB. But it is manditory on all smart phones, even lost ones, unless replaced.
WARNING: Ask the rep to confirm if you have the "Smartphone Talk Free promotion". (Very Likely)
This is Verizon's warning verbatum, taking note of the last clause:
If your plan includes the Smartphone Talk Free Promotion, the following conditions apply:
    * You must keep the $29.99 Data Package associated with your eligible Smartphone device
    * You must keep your current plan. If you change your plan, the promotion and the $9.99/line/mo.
      Credit will be removed.
    * An eligible Smartphone must be associated with your plan. If you upgrade or change to a
non-Smartphone device, the promotion and the $9.99/line/mo. credit will be removed.
BTW: People stuck with no good solution and wishing to avoid the contract cancellation penalty, have another option usually not mentioned. All carriers have a basic 1Yr service plan. Verizon's calls theirs Nationwide Loyalty 100, priced at $25 monthly, for 100m general and 500m N/W (all [email protected]),
And it proves ideal for my 8th grader, a phone for texting and emergency calls.
