I messed up migrating from old iMac to my shiny new one. I didn't turn off power saver. How do I start again, it's all gone wrong, help

Boot into recovery mode, launch Disk Utility and wipe the HD. Quit DU and restore the OS. On first boot, migrate properly, using the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

  • Migrating from old time capsule to a new one

I have a new Time Capsule (4th gen, 2TB) that I want to replace my old Time Capsule (3rd gen, 2TB).
(The rationale is that I was splitting the original between time machine backups and shared home media but it had become full and performance was sluggish despite the auto-deletion of oldest backups.  Instead of getting a USB drive for the other media I decided to upgrade my main TC to the newest version but keep the 3rd Gen just for the media.)
What I'm looking for is a simple explanation for how to set up my new TC to replace my old one.  The manual isn't clear on this and I can't find a clear thread on the discussion that mirrors my situation.
My guess is that I need to follow these steps:
    - initialise the new TC as (just) an external HD to my Mac
    - deactivate time machine then copy the sparsebundles to the new TC
    - set up the new TC in network router mode
    - deactivate the network router mode on my old TC
    - swap the new TC for the old TC
    - reactivate time machine and point it towards the new network drive
My first question that I'd be grateful for answers to is: is the above correct or would you propose a different approach for any reason?
My second question is how do I then re-mount the old TC as a shared network drive
    - can it connect by wifi or do I need to connect it by ethernet or USB to the 'new' TC?
    - I assume I can simply delete the old sparsebundle files and repoint iTunes to access the media
Many thanks for your time in responding!

Alot of your steps depend on the first one which is wrong.. sorry.. you cannot use the TC as external HD.. it is now and forever a network drive.
That being the case.. let me suggest the following order.
    - deactivate TM.. yes that stops messy things happening.
    - setup the new TC to do all the functions of the existing one. The easiest way to do this is simply pull the old one out the network and install the new one.. otherwise you are trying to make two network connections to the two TC which will by default have the same IP. This will depend though on if you normally use ethernet. Do you?? I will suggest it another way if that is the case.
    - Factory reset the old TC.. and then set it in bridge mode and plug it into the new TC by ethernet.
    - Make sure all the network connections are full gigabit speed. If you are going to copy the old TM across this is going to take maybe a day or more.. assuming you have the 1TB drive full. TC cannot copy from one to the other direct.. it has to go.. TC1-Computer-TC2. which halves the speed.
Do you really need these old backups.. IMHO it is better.. much better.. to start a fresh TM backup. You can get a USB drive to offload the existing backups using the direct archive method.. although you will need the old 5.6 utility to do it.
    - Copying sparsebundles is not hard.. just time consuming. See Q18 with every combo of doing this.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    - Then you can erase the old TC and load your media on it.. remembering that the TC has no way to back itself up.. and TM cannot backup a network drive.. so if you store itunes library for instance on it.. and access it by wireless.. except that at some stage it will corrupt itself. Count on it. Make sure you have a backup.
    - reactivate TM if you did indeed move the old sparsebundle.. and point it to the right target disk.

I cannot sync from old G5 so if I backup that iCal, can I merge it with new iCal on my new Mac without losing new Mac calenday details?
    Thanks.

    Jeff,
First, iCloud: How to back up iCloud data.
Next, use iCal>File>Export>Export...for the calendar that you want to use for the export. Move the .ics file to your new computer, and double click the file. You will be offered a choice of creating a new calendar in iCloud, or importing to an existing calendar. Make the appropriate choice for your circumstances.

hello! My iMac frozed and I had to switch the electricty supply off and on in order to start again the system, with the problem that the screen looks wierd, I tried to calibrate it... doesnt works any suggestion?

Dear Paul, thank you very much for your time and answer, I followed those steps, somehow it helped the performance of my Imac, is faster now, but the screen issue about the very High contrast colours is still there. Since I am a photographer I am very depending on the screen calibration. I am worried that I came to damage the video card when I shut down the computer from the swicth when It was frozed.

  • Transfer vendors line items from old reconcilation account to the new one .

    Dear All
I have changed the reconciliation account for a group of vendor i want to know if its applicable to post my previous line items that located in the old reconciliation account to the new one automatically or meaningfully  if there is a transaction that will help me to do that.
    Thanks

    Hi,
yes you are right. The customzing TC is OBBW. For your corresponding Recon. Account you have to asign the offset Account.
At month end you can then start the business transaction to re-classify Rec. A/P or A/R to the correct G/L Account with the mention parameter. So for your Balance Sheet reporting and for the reconcilation Sub/Ledger Main Ledeger it ok then.
If you need further informaion just let me know.

  • Migrating Data from old iMac G5 (PPC) to new iMac QC i7

I have had an iMac G5 PPC for about 6 years. The logic board just died about 2 weeks ago.
I am about to purchase a new 27" iMac Quad-core i7 machine, and I am wondering what is the best way to migrate data from the old machine to the new one.
I have a few different questions...
I use SuperDuper! to backup, so I do have a full copy of my hard drive on an external drive. But the data is about 2 weeks older than the hard drive on my G5 (meaning, I backed up about 2 weeks before the machine died, so there is data on there that I'd love to retrieve). I understand that I can pull the hard drive out of the iMac G5 and buy a cable to attach it to the new machine. I also understand that I can attach my external drive (with the SuperDuper! copy of my hard drive) to the new iMac, too, and run Migration Assistant (or Set Up Assistant) to transfer data.
However, I have heard that it is not good to do a straight migration from a Power PC to an Intel machine.
    Is that true?
I would ideally like to transfer all my email (tens of thousands of them), my iPhoto library, my iTunes library, iCal, many many documents, and some other random stuff.
    What do you recommend?
Should I do an automatic migration using Set Up Assistant and my external hard drive with the SuperDuper copy?
Should I (and can I?) do an automatic migration with the hard drive that I pull from the old machine?
Or should I (can I?) do a manual migration whereby I only copy the folders/files/libraries that I really want, and avoid clogging up the new machine with PowerPC apps, etc., that the new (Intel) iMac might not like?
This last one seems like the ideal choice, but I am not sure...and I don't know exactly how to go about that process.
Apologies for the long post, and many thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.
    Best,
    Matt

automatic migration works well for most people but problems are possible both because of architecture and system differences.

    What do you recommend?
you can try automatic migration first. if you are worried about possible problems you can choose to migrate user data only but no applications. this should reduce the likelihood of conflicts. but if you run into problems you can always erase and install and do manual migration. since you have a superduper backup this option is not going away and is always available.
see this link on how to go about that

  • Problems opening Firefox or Netscape after migrating from old iMac to new

When I set up my new iMac I migrated my internet settings and other preferences and apps from my old iMac.
Now, I can't get Firefox, Netscape or even Internet Explorer to open unless I have my old iMac on and connected via Firewire and router to my new one.
I get a dialog box telling me that: Connection Failed in bold letters and then the following: This file server is running on your machine. Please access the volumes and files locally.
I had a wireless connection on my old iMac cause I needed to connect a windows pc laptop to get on-line in order to work. I have a wireless router which is now connected to my new iMac as the main computer.
Before I turned off and unpluged the old mac whenever I opened Firefox or Netscape my old iMac drive would pop up on my desktop and my browsers would open up instantaneously without a hitch. All other apps open without a problem.
    Any suggestions will be welcomed.

Thanks but that did not work. Under the new user I tried all browsers and the only one that opens is Safari.
I even tried deleting the preference files and still nothing.
I disconnected the old mac but I still keep getting a dialog box titled AFP Connection Status and Looking up "name computer" and now I get the Connection Failed - The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again.
Neither Firefox, Netscape, Mozilla or Internet Explorer open.

  • Migrate from old DMM apppliance to a new DMM appliance

    Hi Netpos,
I have been assigned to the following task: I need to install and configure a new DMM and SNS in order to update the version to 5.3 (since the old servers could have been updated only up to 5.2.2).
My concern is related with the  content (presentations layout, settings, scheduling etc) of the existing appliances.
Is there a way to migrate the content to the new appliances?

    Hi Panayotis,
It is currently not supported to backup DMM/SNS configuration and content from one hardware model and restore them on a different hardware model.
A full migration option from legacy DMM hardware to new one is in plans but not available yet. I would recommend you to follow up on this with your Cisco Account team in order to stay updated on the plan.

  • How can I recover photos from old iphone icloud backup to new one?

Hello, I had an iPhone 4 which I lost and inside there were some great photos that I want now to recover. In the meanwhile I bought an iPhone5S and I just realized that inside the iCloud backup menu is saying that there is a backup of 3GB of my old iPhone. How can I see if in that backup the photos are there? I have connected my iPhoto App to iCloud but it only finds photos from my new iPhone and not the old one...
    Thanks for your time.

Hi, Tiago, maybe you can get help from data recovery software. Now things get easy now.
As far as I know, there are three ways to recover deleted contacts and photos from iPhone 5 with iPhone Data Recovery.
Way 1: Recover deleted photos from iPhone directly
Way 2: Using iTunes Backup to recover deleted photos
Way 3: Using iCloud Backup to recover deleted photos
You can refer the way 3 of how to recover deleted photos from iPhone to recover photos from  old iPhone iCloud backup.
    Good luck to you.

  • Transfer applications from old apple id to a new one ..

    hi guys,
    i have a problem ..
my boss's apple id has been hacked.
The password didn't change, but the security questions and the forgot password email has been changed, so we can't reset or change the password.
we've tried to add alternative email, and reset password, but the email from apple to reset password always redirected to the hacker's email.
we can't reset using security questions because the hacker have changed that.
so, we consider to create a new apple id, but the questions are :
    1. can we transfer all applications from the hacked apple id to the new one, so we don't need to buy all the applications again and can automatically update all the applications that we downloaded from the hacked apple id?
    2. if we stop the credit card from the hacked apple id, can we still update all the applications that we downloaded with the hacked apple id?
    thanks before,
    krishna

  • Migrated from old Windows XP laptop to new Windows 8 laptop. Bookmarks, passwords, personalized settings are missing?

We purchased a new Windows 8 laptop. I used Windows Easy Transfer to transfer data from the old laptop to the new laptop. Now, my wife's bookmarks, saved passwords, and other personalized settings do not appear on the new laptop.
I am not sure if Windows Easy Transfer actually migrated my wife's Firefox profile. Where would this be stored on the new laptop?
How can I manually migrate her profile from the old computer to the new computer?

I do not know anything about Windows 8 but if you have Firefox installed and running there is an easy method of finding your profile: let Firefox do it for you by using the troubleshooting option as explained in this article
    * [[Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data]]
** also see [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]
I would imagine your wife's profile should be in a similar location to your own but under another user's name.
To manually migrate the profile just overwrite the existing default profile of your wife in Windows 8 with the full profile folder and files from the XP. For full details on how to do this and further background information please look at:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_your_profile_folder#Create_a_new_profile_and_migrate_your_old_data
Although I am unable to give you a direct answer to your question I hope the above articles will help, post back with how you get on.

  • Getting files from old external drive to a new one

I have a dying Acom ac powered 80gig external drive on my eMac and a powerbook that is running out of drive space.
The Acom has one USB and two firewire outputs, one firewire is hooked up to the eMac . The Acom is all itunes music (none from the Apple Store) .
I had an ex-friend set it up so I don't know squat about using external drives . I think I'll get the LaCie Mobile firewire . From what I've read it seems the best . Any other suggestions are welcome .
Is there a good tutorial somewhere on how to do this ? I would like to transfer all the music from the Acom to the new drive and be able to use it like I did the old one AND use it with my powerbook to do the same thing .
Will there be a problem with library ? In iTunes (4.7) I have "Create file names with track number " checked but I don't have "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" I don't really know what this does but it sounded like it took up space so I haven't ever checked it .
as mentioned the eMac is iTunes 4.7 using Panther and the powerbook is iTunes 6.0.2 using Tiger .
    G4powerbook tiger- G4eMac panther   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

What you like to do can be done, but not using different main versions of iTunes.
The reason for this is, that the 'iTunes Library' file has different structures with different main versions and is not downwards compatible.
Unless you have a reason not to upgrade iTunes on the eMac, my advice would be to upgrade.
If you purcase music at the iTMS, using iTunes 6, you won't be able to play them on previous iTunes versions.
If you have MIDI files, don't upgrade to the latest iTunes 6.0.4, unless you own QuickTime Pro.
iTunes 6.0.3 and 6.0.4 are having troubles with them (iTunes: MIDI files cannot be converted in iTunes 6.0.3 and 6.0.4).
I have an G4 iMac running iTunes 6.0.4. and an G3 iMac DV running itunes 6.0.2.
My music is stored on an external drive and it is no problem at all to use it on both computers.
There are a few requirements however (more about that later)
My advice would be to take the next steps.
    • Purchase the mobile drive and transfer the music to it, using the instructions in the 'Moving your iTunes Music folder' article.
You will still have a backup on your Acom (as long as it still is running) in case something might go wrong.
    • Upgrade iTunes on the eMac
    • Copy the 'iTunes Library' file from eMac to the new mobile drive, attach the drive to the Powerbook and copy the 'iTunes library' file from mobile drive to Powerbook. Read "What are the iTunes library files?" to find the exact location of the file.
    • Run iTunes on the Powerbook. you should see the entire library as you saw it on your eMac.
A few things to consider and take int account:
Decide which computer to use to add and import music. This will make things a lot easier.
You can of course add music on both computers, but you have to swap the 'iTunes Library' over and over to keep the libraries on both computers synchronized.
Always attach the mobile drive to the computer, before running iTunes. If you fail to do so, iTunes will reset the 'iTunes Music folder location' to the default location on the internal drive on the computer. Unless you 'point' iTunes to the location on the mobile again, songs you add and import will then be stored on the internal disk.
Let know if you have further questions.
