I met problems about XML Node attributes in Flex 2.0

Here is my example
<Root Pro1="1">
<TestNode />
</Root>
I get the XML from HTTPService:
var xmlData:XML = new XML(hsTest.lastResult);
I can get the value by the method "attribute()":
xmlData.attribute("Pro1"); // correct
But if i try the code:
xmlData.attribute("Pro2"); // Not null,and even not "", but i
really do not know what it is.It just shows blank in "Alert.show()"
method.
In the fact, i want to check whether the XML Node has a
certain property.Finally i find the method "hasOwnProperty()", but
it does not seem to work like its name:
xmlData.hasOwnProperty("Pro1"); // return false
xmlData.hasOwnProperty("Pro2"); // return fasle
I wonder how i should code it.
Thanks in advance.

If you look at the return value of the attribute() method,
it's an XMLList. You can think of it as an array of XML objects. In
this case, it returned an empty XMLList. Just check whether
length() is 0 is not.

but when I validate the two files with schema processor , it will said :

Thank you,

I ask because I found simple exsamples of XML-Datafiles without this :

Hi hengfo,
It's not necessary to use "bytes at port", in fact, I don't trust it, it seems there can be some strange latency! (see threads below)
Just go ahead and wire the number of bytes you want to read to the Read - but be ready for a timeout error if the bytes you request don't arrive within the VISA timeout period.

• Add attribute to a XML node at a specific position

I have this XML :
var myNode:XML = <node attribute="123"/>
I know how to add an attribute to the node :
myNode.@otherAttribute = "abc";
But this adds the attribute to the end. What if I want to add it as the first attribute ? I would like to have :
<node otherAttribute="abc" attribute="123"/>
I know it is possible to add a child node to a specific position with insertChildAfter() or insertChildBefore() but I don't know if it's possible for an attribute.

there's no native method for this, maybe you should create some functions for this. just like
private function setAttribute(node:XML, name:String, value:String, index:int = -1):void
var attrs:XMLList = node.attributes().copy(),
l:int = attrs.length();
if(index == -1 || index > l - 1)
node.@[name] = value;
else
delete node.@*;
var idx:int = 0;
for (var i:int = 0; i < l + 1; i++)
if(i == index)
node.@[name] = value;
else
var attr:XML = attrs[idx];
node.@[attr.name()] = attr.toString();
idx++;
and use it like this:
setAttribute(myNode, "otherAttribute", "abc", 0);

• Create an attribute on an xml node

Hello,
I can't find how to make an attribute on an xml node using javascript.
I have found assignNode() to create a node but nothing about attribute.
Does anybody know about this ?
Thanks by advance
Samuel

To use the assignNode, you will need to create the node first. You can use the xfa.form.createNode() method to create an object from the XFA object model hierarchy. This method returns an object reference which you then pass to assignNode() of the appropriate parent object

• Select XML Node by a specific attribute value

I am newbie for LifeCyle.
This might be an easy question, but it really got me here.
I am trying bind xml data into a Drop-Down List. The databinding is working fine, but I would like to have more specific node selected from the xml file by using a attribute value.
for example Code in AS 3.0
root.node.(@id=="1").subNode
How could i do the same thing in LifeCycle Designer 8.0
Thank you in advance!!!

there's no native method for this, maybe you should create some functions for this. just like
private function setAttribute(node:XML, name:String, value:String, index:int = -1):void

• ArrayCollection/Single XML Node problem

I've encountered a very frustrating situation that I would
LOVE some help with. I am getting xml back from an HTTPService that
I'm casting as an ArrayCollection. Very simple code:
[Bindable]
private var queueCol:ArrayCollection;
queueCol = event.result.Response.CallQueue.QueueItem;
This works great as long as there are multiple "QueueItem"
nodes. once the sml gets down to ONE QueueItem Flex throws an ugly
error. I have found this in other areas as well. It seems Flex
cannot reconcile xml of only single child nodes.
Has anyone else encountered this? Is there a
workaround/different approach to get around this?

You might try something like:
queueCol = new
ArrayCollection(event.result.Response.CallQueue.QueueItem is
Array?event.result.Response.CallQueue.QueueItem:[event.result.Response.CallQueue.QueueIte m]);
The SimpleXMLDecoder starts of converting a child node to a
property, but if there's already something there, it converts it to
an array. So flex doesn't have any problem reconciling xml with
single child node - it is making a best guess in the absence of an
xml schema. You can write your own decoder if you like (this is
what I have done), and hand it to the HTTPService to use in place
of the default. Then you can make it read a schema (if you have
one).

• XML Parsing attributes with encoded ampersand causes wrong order

Hi all,
I am writing in the forum first (because it could be that i am doing something wrong.... but i think it is a bug. Nonetheless, i thought i'd write my problem up here first.
I am using Java 6, and this has been reproduced on both windows and linux.
java version "1.6.0_03"
Problem:
read XML file into org.w3c.dom.Document.
XML File has some attributes which contain ampersand. These are escaped as (i think) is prescribed by the rule of XML. For example:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<lang>
<text dna="8233" ro="chisturi de plex coroid (>=1.5 mm)" it="Cisti del plesso corioideo(>=1.5mm)" tr="Koroıd pleksus kisti (>=1.5 mm)" pt_br="Cisto do plexo coróide (>=1,5 mm)" de="Choroidplexus Zyste (>=1,5 mm)" el="Κύστεις χοροειδούς πλέγματος (>= 1.5 mm)" zh_cn="脉络膜囊肿（>= 1.5 mm）" pt="Quisto do plexo coroideu (>=1,5 mm)" bg="Киста на хориоидния плексус (>= 1.5 mm)" fr="Kystes du plexus choroide (>= 1,5 mm)" en="Choroid plexus cysts (>=1.5 mm)" ru="кисты сосудистых сплетений (>=1.5 mm)" es="Quiste del plexo coroideo (>=1.5 mm)" ja="脈絡膜嚢胞（>=1.5mm）" nl="Plexus choroidus cyste (>= 1,5 mm)" />
</lang>As you might understand, we need to have the fixed text '>' for later processing. (not the greater than symbol '>' but the escaped version of it).
Therefore, I escape the ampersand (encode?) and leave the rest of the text as is. And so my > becomes >
All ok?
Symptom:
in fetching attributes, for example by the getAttribute("en") type call, the wrong attribute values are fetched.
Not only that, if i only read to Document instance, and write back to file, the attributes are shown mixed up.
eg:
dna: 8233, ro=chisturi de plex coroid (>=1.5 mm), en=кисты сосудистых сплетений (>=1, de=Choroidplexus Zyste (>=1,5 mm)Here you can see that 'en' is shown holding what looks like greek, ... (what is ru as a country-code anyway?) where it should have obviously had the english text that originally was associated with the attribute 'en'
This seems very strange and unexpected to me. I would have thought that in escaping (encoding) the ampersand, i have fulfilled all requirements of me, and that should be that.
There is also no error that seems to occur.... we simply get the wrong order when fetching attributes.
Am I doing something wrong? Or is this a bug that should be submitted?
Kind Regards, and thanks to all responders/readers.
Sean
p.s. previously I had not been escaping the ampersand. This meant that I lost my ampersand in fetching attributes, AND the attribute order was ALSO WRONG!
In fact, the wrong order was what led me to read about how to correctly encode ampersand at all. I had been hoping that correctly encoding would fix the order problem, but it didn't.

Hi kdgregory ,
Firstly, sorry if there has been a misunderstanding on my part. If i did not reply to the question you raised, I appologise.
In this 'reply' I hope not to risk further misunderstanding, and have simply given the most basic example which will cause the problem I am talking about, as well as short instructions on what XML to remove to make the problem disappear.
Secondly, as this page seems to be displayed in ISO 8859-1, this is the reason the xml I have posted looks garbled. The xml is UTF-8. I have provided a link to the example xml file for the sample below
[example xml file UTF-8|http://sean.freeshell.org/java/less2.xml]
As for your most recent questions:
Is it specified as an entity? To my knowledge (so far as my understanding of what an entity is) , yes, I am including entities in my xml. In my below example, the entities are the code for the greater than symbol. I am under the understanding that this is allowed in XML ??
Is it an actual literal character (0xA0)? No, I am specifying 'greater than' entity (code?) in order to include the actual symbol in the end result. I am encoding it in form 'ampersand', 'g character', 't character', 'colon' in order for it to work, according to information I have read on various web pages. A quick google search will show you where I got such information from, example website: https://studio.tellme.com/general/xmlprimer.html
Here is my sample program. It is longer than the one you kindly provided only because it prints out all attributes of the element it looks for. To use it, only change the name of the file it loads.
I have given the xml code seperately so it can be easily copied and saved to file.
Results you can expect from running this small test example?
1. a mixed up list of attributes where attribute node name no longer matches its assigned attribute values (not for all attributes, but some).
2. removing the attribute bg from the 'text' element will reduce most of these symptoms, but not all. Removing another attribute from the element will most likely make the end result look normal again.
3. No exception is thrown by the presence of non xml characters.
IMPORTANT!!! I have only just (unfortunately) noticed what this page does to my unicode characters... all the the international characters get turned into funny codes when previewed and viewed on this page.
Whereas the only codes I am explicitly including in this XML is the greater than symbol. The rest were international characters.
Perhaps that is the problem?
Perhaps there is an international characters problem?
I am quite sure that these characters are all UTF-8 because when I open up this xml file in firefox, It displays correctly, and in checking the character encoding, firefox reports UTF-8.
In order to provide an un-garbled xml file, I will provide it at this link:
link to xml file: [http://sean.freeshell.org/java/less2.xml]
Again, sorry for any hassle and/or delay with my reply, or poor reply. I did not mean to waste anyones time.
It will be appreciated however if an answer can be found for this problem. Chiefly,
1. Is this a bug?
2. Is the XML correct? (if not, then all those websites i've been reading are giving false information? )
Kindest Regards,
Sean

• Xml in JTree: how to not collpase JTree node, when renaming XML Node.

Hi.
I'm writing some kind of XML editor. I want to view my XML document in JTree and make user able to edit contents of XML. I made my own TreeModel for JTree, which straight accesses XML DOM, produced by Xerces. Using DOM Events, I made good-looking JTree updates without collapsing JTree on inserting or removing XML nodes.
But there is a problem. I need to produce to user some method of renaming nodes. As I know, there is no way to rename node in w3c DOM. So I create new one with new name and copy all children and attributes to it. But in this way I got a new object of XML Node instead of renamed one. And I need to initiate rebuilding (treeStructureChanged event) of JTree structure. Renamed node collapses. If I use treeNodesChanged event (no rebuilding, just changes string view of JTree node), then when I try to operate with renamed node again, exception will be throwed.
Is there some way to rename nodes in my program without collpasing JTree?
I'am new to Java. Maybe there is a method in Xerces DOM implementation to rename nodes without recreating?
Thanks in advance.

I assume that "rename" means to change the element name? Anyway your question seems to be "When I add a node to a JTree, how do I make sure it is expanded?" This is completely concerned with Swing, so it might have been better to post it in the Swing forum, but if it were me I would do this:
1. Copy the XML document into a JTree.
2. Allow the user to edit the document. Don't attempt to keep an XML document or DOM synchronized with the contents of the JTree.
3. On request of the user, copy the JTree back to a new XML document.
This way you can "rename" things to the user's heart's content without having the problem you described.

• Basic doubt about XML file generation

Hi,
I am new to Java. I am facing some trouble designing and implementing a particular problem involving XML files.
Problem:
I have an XML file which contains a set of properties and their default value. What I need to do is to read another file/stream which will have name=value strings and then, for all the names that I find there, change default value to current value. These names can appear in any order. For example,
<name1 value=default1/>
<name2 value=default2/>
<name3 value=default3/>
And I will get something like "set name3=value3 name1=value1" (This data comes to me from a stream -usb device- and not from a file). Then I should change it to
<name1 value=value1/>
<name2 value=default2/>
<name3 value=value3/>
What is the best possible way to do this in Java? This has to go into an embedded system so it will be nice if it can be done with minimum memory and less processing power.
I am currently reading J2EEtutorial (1.4). I have not read much. But I am confused if I should be using SAX, DOM or XSLT. To speak the truth, I don't even know the difference between all those. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks & Regards,
Suseelan

Use a DOM parser to parse the original XML.
DocumentBuilderFactory domFactory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
DocumentBuilder domBuilder = domFactory.newDocumentBuilder();
Document document = domBuilder.parse( inputStreamToFile );Then read in the contents from your USB stream into say an array or Vector. Then go through each child node in the domBuilder class, get the nodes name and see if it's in the Vector of objects from the USB stream. If it is, then replace the "Value" attribute in the dom node with what is in the Vector.
Make sense?

• Problem About J2EE RI and PetStore Demo

Hello ^^
I have a problem about j2ee & petstore.
I trird to set up sun j2ee RI 1.3.1 + pet store on win2000 or redhat.
Everything run ok. But when I changed web port 8000 to any port (included
80),
j2ee ri server showed the error message below :
java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect
java.security.PrivilegedActionException: javax.servlet.ServletException:
An error occurred while evaluating custom action attribute "items" with
value "${catalog.categories.list}": An error occurred while getting
property "categories" from an instance of class
com.sun.j2ee.blueprints.catalog.client.CatalogHelper
I used root to start j2ee & cloudscape on linux,
and changed database to postgresql, too.
but the error is the same.
How to solve this problem ??
Thank you ~~

Hi,
I dont know how useful my reply would be since the question was posted about 2 yrs back, but just wanted to reply in case somebody faces the same problem.
If you change the web port to some other port (other than 8000) then please check the sun-j2ee-ri.xml files. Actually the CatalogDAOSQL.xml is read using a url which includes the port you are running the server on. So, you need to change the port even in the sun-j2ee-ri.xml file.
One of the sun-j2ee-ri.xml files, where you need to make the change is in the $PETSTORE_HOME/src/apps/petstore/src/sun-j2ee-ri.xml file.
Other one is in $PETSTORE_HOME/src/apps/supplier/src/sun-j2ee-ri.xml file.
Look for other sun-j2ee-ri.xml files where the url is hardcoded. (I think the two sun-j2ee-ri.xml files mentioned above, are the only places you need to make the change, but still look for other files in case i have missed)
Change those urls and redeploy the ears.
Hope this solves the problem.
