I need to erase my hard drive and start anew, will time Machine(external drive) and all the discs I got with my computer be enough to restart things.  And secondly does RAM memory cards go bad.  Here's the info on my IMac:

  Model Identifier:          iMac6,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed:          2.16 GHz
  Number Of Processors:          1
  Total Number Of Cores:          2
  L2 Cache:          4 MB

  Boot ROM Version:          IM61.0093.B07

I need to erase my hard drive and start anew
Why do you feel you need to do this? That is such a 'Windows thing' to do!
And secondly does RAM memory cards go bad
Very rarely, but nothing in life is guaranteed (except death and taxes)! If you purchased RAM from a reputable source like Crucial or OWC it will carry a lifetime warranty.

I need to erase my hard drive. But the drives are grey when I go to Disk Utility.

Restart the computer with the Command and R keys held down and use the Disk Utility from there. If you're going to sell or give away the computer, press Option as well.

  • I need to erase my hard drive

According to Apple, I need to erase my hard drive then re-install my software programs one at a time to figure out what's going on with my computer.
Problem is, I can't find my installer discs for CS6 & according to my order history in Adobe, It doesn't appear that I purchased through a download.
Is there a way to verify this? Also, is it possible to get replacement discs?
I do have CC but there are some orders I would prefer to work out of CS6

If you have a subscription to Creative Cloud, you can download CS6 apps from the cloud. Go to creative.adobe.com. Log in with your Adobe ID. Go to the Download Center. Click on the name of a CS6 app you want to install (e.g., InDesign) but don't click Download. This takes you to the InDesign page. Under the "In This Version" head, select InDesign CS6 and download.

  • Do I need to erase my hard drive to use time machine?

I have an external 500 gb hard drive with about 40 gigs on it. I have a 250 gig imac that I want to back up with time machine. I tried using my 500 gb hard drive, but an error popped up saying I need to erase my hard drive. Can't I have other content besides the time machine content on my 500 gig hard drive. That would be a waste of space otherwise.
    Thank you,
    Caleb

If you get an error saying TM wants to erase the disk, then the problem is most likely formatting-related. The drive is not properly formatted (OS X Extended, journaled) for TM. The previous suggestion of using a new partition for TM is probably the best. But be sure you format it correctly.

I have lost my Safari app and all the bookmarks that go with it. I have tried to download my back-up on external drive but cannot access it. Tried a start with C key held down but still no access to the back up app.
Have used Superduper app. to back up and checked back-up occasionally to see if all files present  and appeared OK.
I had previously started machine using original CD #1 to try and replace Eudora which was acting up. Did not knowingly touch Safari.
    Running iMAC System 10.4.11
How can I successfully download from the Maxtor back-up?

    Further info.
I checked the content of my other back-up and found the bookmark Bookmarks.plist in the library under Safari
Dumped the existing copy in the computer and drag-dropped the back up. All bookmarks restored.
Solved the Stickies problem by using Spotlight  to find file "stickiesdatabase" and did a drag- drop to replace file. All data restored.
Re Ical data loss. Used Spotlight to find iCal document in  Library - Preferences where I found com.apple.iCal.plist in folder.
Got ready to make change but did not immediately remove file. When I returned to Preferences folder to grab above document,
the readable descriptors had been changed to code consisting of some upper case letters and/or single symbols!
So now I cannot tell which is the symbol  iCal.plist
Thanks for leading me so far, but how do I find that plist for my calendar?

  • How to erase a hard drive on a i MAC Power PC with OSX 10.5.8 pre-intel?

I got this i Mac G5 Power PC with a 20" screen (no iSight) and last generation of i Mac repaired.  Capacitors and a power supply did revive my machine and it works fine.  I would like to donate my machine and want to erase the hard drive and make sure that all my personal data is gone.
I have the Leopard disk and I am told that if I booth my machine with the disk while holding the C key then I can go to Disk Utility and erase my hard drive.
Does anyone have a step-by-step approach to guide me through this?
Any help will be most appreciated!
    Thank you,
    Guy

    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Must I leave the back up hard drive on all the time?

I'm just moving up to the new iMac. When I use time machine must I leave the backup hard drive on continuously, or can I turn it on and back up incrementally?
    Suggestions will be appreciated

After your first backup, all Time Machine backups are incremental.
To protect you best, leave the drive on and connected with Time Machine turned on at all times; Time Machine will do an incremental backup hourly. Backing-up less often will save very little space on your TM drive, and very little CPU.
External drives are built to run 24/7, but if you use the drive only for Time Machine, it will probably spend most of it's time sleeping.

  • Remove packages and all the config files associated with it

How can I remove a package and all the files folders hidden folders config files and examples which are installed with it.
In short how can I revert the system back to the state when the package was not even there.
When i remove a package i still see some folders which are associated with it in some weird directories.
Is there a way to get rid of those.
    Thanks

    From the pacman man page:
    Remove Options
    -c, --cascade
Remove all target packages, as well as all packages that depend on one or more target packages. This operation is recursive, and must be used with care since it can remove many potentially needed packages.
    -k, --keep
Removes the database entry only. Leaves all files in place.
    -n, --nosave
Instructs pacman to ignore file backup designations. Normally, when a file is removed from the system the database is checked to see if the file should be renamed with a ".pacsave" extension.
    -s, --recursive
Remove each target specified including all of their dependencies, provided that (A) they are not required by other packages; and (B) they were not explicitly installed by the user. This operation is recursive and analogous to a backwards --sync operation, and helps keep a clean system without orphans.
-n seems to be what you are looking for.

  • How do I remove ITunes and all the associated apps connected with ITunes from IPAD air. I did not ask for the download. It happened when I added a Chrome app.

My IPAD air that I use strictly for work automatically downloaded ITunes installation app and all the usual apps that come on with ITunes such as store, App Store, face time, ect when I downloaded the CHROME app for work. How to I delete all of these?

You can't. Those built in apps are not able to be deleted. The most you can do is to put them on a back menu page or tuck them in a folder.
They didn't come with the chrome app, they were there all along.
You can also go into the restrictions and enable restrictions and turn the apps off, which will make their icons invisible even though the apps will still be on your device.

  • Do I need to erase my hard drive?

My 15" 1.5GHz superdrive powerbook sometimes won't start up properly in tiger. The screen shows "starting mac os" and then fast it loads (really it doesnt load my user info, doesn't let me log in and leaves me with an aqua blank screen).
The disc permissions are not correct. This is what disk utility says almost each time I check it (so it doesn't repair them even though it says it has!):
    Verify permissions for “Macintosh HD”
    Determining correct file permissions.
Permissions differ on ./Library/StartupItems, should be drwxr-xr-x , they are drwxrwxr-x
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./Library/Widgets. New permissions are 16877
Group differs on ./private/etc/authorization, should be 80, group is 0
Permissions differ on ./private/var/log/secure.log, should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r-----
Permissions differ on ./usr/bin/setregion, should be -r-sr-xr-x , they are -r-xr-xr-x
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./usr/lib/php/build/acinclude.m4. New permissions are 33060
    Permissions verification complete
The privileges have been verified or repaired on the selected volume
    SO far:
The first time it happened my hard drive was found to be faulty and applecare replaced the HD. When the computer returned from apple, I installed tiger and reloaded my data from a firewire drive (and probably the problem permissions). Every two weeks or so I can't log in and the screen goes to aqua only when I start up. I have reloaded tiger and archived my folders twice and then deleted the old system but the problems remain.
As the permissions seem to be with information outside my user files, could my tiger disc be at fault? I test it before each install and it verifies.
I hope someone out there who knows a lot about computers can tell me what to do as I love macs but have not had much luck with this one since I installed tiger (4.2)
    best wishes
    Bella

Two things I see in what you posted above are:
    - "Verify permissions for 'Macintosh HD'"
    - "Permissions verification complete"
These tell me that you have chosen to verify (rather than to repair) file permissions. If you choose to repair permissions (rather than choosing to verify them), the messages,
Permissions differ on ./Library/StartupItems, should be drwxr-xr-x , they are drwxrwxr-x
Group differs on ./private/etc/authorization, should be 80, group is 0
Permissions differ on ./private/var/log/secure.log, should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r-----
Permissions differ on ./usr/bin/setregion, should be -r-sr-xr-x , they are -r-xr-xr-x
    should be corrected.
    These messages:
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./Library/Widgets. New permissions are 16877
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./usr/lib/php/build/acinclude.m4. New permissions are 33060
are not permissions problems. They are status messages indicating that the permissions for these files have been changed for the sake of a system or security update. They will always appear when you repair (or verify) permissions.
One thing you might consider doing is to boot from your Install disc holding down the C key, choosing your language, then go to the Utilities menu in the menu bar and choose Disk Utility. When Disk Utility opens choose to repair permissions, and then choose to Repair Disk. (If any error messages show when you Repair Disk, run it again until no error messages appear.) Again, don't choose to Verify File Permissions or Verify Disk, because these choices don't fix anything.
When you've done this restart your PB and see if things are better.
To answer your questions: Verifying file permissions only causes Disk Utility to report which permissions are out of order. It is unnecessary to choose to verify permissions. Just click Repair File Permissions and permissions issues will be fixed or left alone as is needed.
Some people rarely if ever repair file permissions. It is arguable how much good this does as a regular maintenance task. For troubleshooting, it is sometimes helpful. The conventional wisdom is that you should repair file permissions before you update system software or other software that uses an installer, and then, after you've installed that software and restarted your machine, you should repair permissions again. (Again, may people think this unnecessary, but I always do it, anyway.)

  • How do I erase a hard drive from within the system itself?

I want to erase everything on my hard drive as I want to give it away to someone. It has Lion on it.
    How do I do this?
I tried to erase using Disk Utility but the disks were grayed out.
I have saved all the data on another disk so I can completely erase the drive.

I ended up doing it by booting with Lion Recovery (it was a Lion machine), obtained by booting and pressing down the Option key.
Then I went to Disk Utility and erased the internal hard disk.
But afterwards, when I tried to do Lion Recovery, I couldn't. Maybe because my Internet connection was poor. I was at a hotel. I think you need an internet connection to get Lion OS downloaded on your computer.
It didn't really matter anyway as I  the person who I gave it to can get Lion on the machine easily.

  • I updated FCPX to 10.9 after I had updated my os to 10.9.1. And the result is that FCPx can no longer read LaCie external hard drive where all the projects and events are stored. The program simply crashes every time I try to read anything from the LaCie.

Could anyone tell me what to do to solve the problem. I updated FCPX to 10.9 and the program keeps on crash every time I try to read files stored in my LaCie hard drive. And the program also keeps on crash every time I try to import files from my SDXC cards.

I have solved the problem. Once the update is done, you need to launch FCPX, and go to File, then "update all events and projects". It will solve the problem and everything works fine.

  • How will an external Hard drive designed for the macbook Pro work with my White Macbook?  My  white macbook has a Firewire 400 and the G-Tech HD has a 800 to 400 compatible cable for the firewire.

I am asking this because I want the G-Tech Hard drive  says that it is designed for the macbook pro.  Yet, I want to back up faster with by using my firewire 400 which is not an option on the one designed for the white macbook that does not have a firewire (only a USB port.)  The G-Tech Hard drive comes with the 800 to 400 compatible cable and has 5400 RPM with 750 GB.  Also, I've heard that laptops with low battery (mine all the time)  won't have the power for a bus powered Hard drive (as in no ac plug in adaptor.)  Can I just plug in my laptop?  Any one know the answers from experience with this hard drive?

As far as I know, if a harddrive works with a Macpro, it should work with the Macbook: if your Macbook is low on power, plug in the AC adapter
If your Macbook has a firewire port, then it should be fine. BUt i would do somemore research first.
