I seem to have got myself into a bit of a mess.....

My C: drive has recently reached 100% capacity so I have purchased an external HDD to keep my music on. Rather stupidly, without thinking about it first, I simply copied all of my music on to the new H: external drive and then deleted the iTunes file out of C: to free up space. I have purchased an album today and it has become clear that all of my music has (I realise now, quite obviously) has disappeared from iTunes. I have tried going into Edit-Preferences-Advanced-Change and then pointing iTunes towards the H: drive but it doesn't work...
Any ideas please?

Resetting the location of the iTunes Music folder in the iTunes preferences, by itself, only sets where future purchases and imports go. In and of itself it won't reset where iTunes looks for tracks already in the iTunes library. You need to use the Add Folder to Library command and select the folder on your H: drive. That should get your content back into iTunes, though you'll have lost your playlists, ratings, playcounts, etc.

Help! I seem to have got myself into a terrible mess with catalogues, etc.

I have an issue which is causing me endless grief:
Recently, I upgraded from 3.0 to 3.4 and on the same day tried converting all my RAW files to .dng in the belief that this would save me hard disc space and allow me an extra degree of security (having the changes written into the file). However, during this conversion of 36,000 files, there was a power cut and the catalogue became corrupted, so I can no longer return to that catalogue.
No problem. I simply re-imported all my files to my HD from my external back-up drive and added them to my catalogue, causing many thousands of duplicate files, spread across different folders. The catalogue doesn't contain any duplicates, however.
(I would like to point out that, in my defence I was, following surgery, acting under the influence of some very heavy pain killers when I made the decision to do all of the above. It semed like a good idea at the time.)
Now this has completely maxed out my internal drive and I don't know how to remove the duplicate files from the HDD except to go through them manually, one-by-one, which isn't really an option. I could just swap out the HDD for a new one, but would that lose me all the work I'd done on files imported since?
Can anyone recommend any software for doing this, or a routine within LR that could save me all my changes, or am I just going to have to face up to losing a whole lot of work here?
I really would appreciate some help with this as it's putting a strain on my ability to work and, as a result, my marriage too (really!) So, please save me from the divorce lawyers!

Yes, I see what you're getting at, and that would work if all of the duplicates weren't in just one LR catalogue folder. That's 30,000+ duplicates in one folder. I'd go ahead and delete them all, but the trouble is that it also contains copies of files that aren't in the catalogue that I'd like to retain access too. I can't see a way round that, but maybe you can. A venn diagram would probably be really helpful at this point, I think...

That's the technique that works if there are dupes in the catalogue, right? I don't have those.
But you're right about pain, and pain-killers: makes you do some crazy stuff. I'm only just getting round to putting the pieces back together after the removal of some very troublesome wisdom teeth; I can't imagine how much worse it would have been if I'd been crippled with back pain.
I think what's happened here is that I've reached an understanding of the problem without the actual answer coming from you guys - and I mean no disrespect whatsoever. It's forced me to think VERY hard about my system and how I back-up - or not - and how best to proceed from now on.
So, having read a lot of David Marx's blog posts, I think I'll be folloing his example in 3-2-1 back-up procedure in future. I'll also be having a "Year Zero" event on my workstation and changing to Win7, re-naming my HDDs in order and switching to an external HDD for running my catalogue and image files side-by-side, which will make syncing with the new laptop much easier.
Lastly, given that sorting through 30,000+ dupes in one folder and then checking them against the contents of all my other folders could take a year, I've decided to go the whole hog and archive almost all of my catalogue except my folio images (they get built into my website from the Lightroom Galleries plugin, so I need access to them on a regular basis) which I can re-work in less time than I would spend trawling through the whole HDD, and start afresh with a proper, logical system.
This has been a painful and potentially costly lesson, but it could have been so much worse. At least I have my RAW archive...

EDIT. Wait. Maybe I have it. Hal, (or anyone) could you let me know if you think this might work:
Delete the entire folder of 'duplicates and everything else', then reimport the contents of my RAW archive into the top level LR folder. LR should then auto-reject suspected duplicates, and replace the non-duplicate contents of the folder that were lost when I deleted the dupes-and-all folder.

Firefox diverts most new windows to tabs, but there is an exception when a website uses a script to specify the window's dimensions or removes some toolbars. To remove the exception, you can make a change under the covers. This could be awkward for genuine dialog windows that don't make sense to view in a separate tab, but if you find it more annoying than useful, you can easily switch back.
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(3) Confirm that the '''browser.link.open_newwindow''' preference is set to its default value of 3 (divert new windows to a tab instead), or right-click > Reset to get that value
(4) Double-click the '''browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction''' preference and change the value from 2 to 0 (that's a zero) and click OK

(A) browser.link.open_newwindow

0 = apply the setting under (A) to ALL new windows (even script windows)

Actually, you can email up to 5 at a time from the Photos app. Select any more and the email share option will not appear.
If you explain why you need to email large numbers of photos, we might be able to offer an alternative.

Got myself in a bit of a muddle with scaling artwork... can someone help?

I'm mainly a web designer but am having to create some exhibition / large scale artwork which I've never done before.
Anyhow, I've got myself in a bit of a pickle with my InDesign artwork - i'm working on some roller banners and a 3D popup exhibition display. I've been told to provide the artowrk at 50% the final size.
However - and this is where I've convinced myself I'm doing it wrong - if the artwork is 50% size, and I've been told to add a 5mm bleed to the top, right and left sides but a 125mm bleed to the bottom, I don't halve these as well, do I?

No. Use their bleed measurements when you set up the document at whatever the 50% size is. So if the document is to be 8 foot long and you make the 50% 4 foot long, add the 5mm bleed to the L/R/T edges and the 125 mm to the bottom edge of the 4 foot long document.

O2-UK coverage seems to have got a LOT worse recently

i updated my iPhone to 2/1 (stupidly) last Friday 15th Sept, that was followed by repeated refusal to sync properly (giving "unknown error 13213" as the cause
that seems to have been solved (tho maybe not) by removing the printer from the USB sockets on the back on my desktop (not even from one on a hub)
BUT since then i have had atrocious O2-UK coverage, at lease half of the time since then i have not had ANY phone coverage
i am not talking internet here! i am talking about the iPhone being unable to "see" the O2 system at all - so i cannot even make phone calls - and i live in central LONDON!!!!
i am hoping this is an unassociated glitch with O2, tho they are not saying anything has happened
anyone else had problems connecting with O2???????

i have had good coverage since i have discovered a couple of O2 blunders, and rectified them
firstly, they had failed to Authorise my iPhone usage, even tho i bought the phone from an iPhone shop
and then 3 weeks later, when i went into another O2 shop, i discovered that i had not been issued with a new sim card, and that was preventing me from using the 3G system
a total mess!! and one that took 6 weeks in all to discover and sort out
now sorted, but i feel it is only by luck!!!

Think I've got myself into a networking kerfuffle!

Quick background - have a BTHome Hub 5 and BT Infinity installed recently. All working fine.
I needed to extend my network coverage to a garden office so I bought some homeplugs and they worked fine, plug and play as advertised.
Now here is where I think I introduced a fly in the ointment. Because there are three PCs in the garden office, I wanted to create another wireless network in there (to save three ethernet connections and have access to printers). So my setup was this:
House > BT HomeHub > Homeplug1 > Garden Office > Homeplug2 > Netgear wireless router
I was initially able to get a second wireless network working in the garden office through the Netgear router but once I enabled WEP, things went awry.
Now my laptop and my phone, both of which could access the BT Home Hub and the Netgear router can not reach the internet on either wifi network.
In Network preferences, TCP/IP, on my Mac, the BT router seems to be using the same IP (192.168.0.1) as the Netgear, not sure whether this is a conflict as BT previously used 192.168.1.254 and the Netgear 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.
As you can tell I'm no expert and not even sure my setup above is workable, but just wondered if someone can point me in the right direction as to what the problem might be?

This process seems to work OK, I now have wifi in the garden office and my home network doesn't seem to be affected.
Only one more problem. I now have mt BTHomeHub5-etc network showing in the house and another wifi network NETGEAR showing in the garden office. Only I can't seem to log back into the Netgear router to enable security - the network is wide open.
I have tried the default IPs for it (192.168.0.1, etc) and what I was prertty sure I'd changed the IP address to on the Neatgear - 192.168.0.99 (not sure if I did this right but one of the guides I read said to manually change the access point's IP address).
But I can't seem to get back into the Netgear router at all. My Mac TCP/IP settings show a router address, but that's the BT one.

Hi, got myself into a pickle Adobe Illustrator CS3 won't print

it seems that when I go to print Ai simple keeps spinning until I get a message that Ai quit then the source page comes up and Ai shuts down.
I successfully uninstalled Version CS3. Wanted to also take out Bridge CS3 but didn't... pulled it out to the desk top then replaced it back in applications. Which did nothing for Ai.
Since I work primarily Ai and Photoshop (both CS3) I'm stuck. I did locate my startup disc's and I know how to open it "safe mode" I would like to re-install Ai CS3 ...(photoshop is working ok) don't know if I first have to disable or uninstall Ai? and, I'm not sure if this is the right way to go.. Any help is greatly appreciated - awaiting your brilliance Barb (oh and I'm a girl - old but a girl) haha

Try a simple Safe Boot first off...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
If that doesn't change anything...
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

Syncing with iphone3g ipad and now iphone4 got myself into a mess

Original 3g and ipad ok....
but when I got the iphone 4, It (or me) synced the same as the 3g.... and so I don't get it showing iphone 4 - is there ANY way, I can sync these three items differently please? At the moment whether I put in the 3g or the 4 it does the same for both.... I expect I missed something the first time I plugged it in, but that doesn't help now.
Any thoughts you can offer would be appreciated.

Disable automatic syncing when any iPod, iPhone, or iPad is connected first of all.
Each device can have its own sync preferences with iTunes - under the various tabs for the iTunes sync preferences with each device when connected. If you transferred the backup for your iPhone 3G to your iPhone 4, this included your sync preferences for your 3G.
With your iPhone 4 connected to iTunes, select it under Devices in the iTunes source list to bring up the various tabs for your iPhone 4 sync preferences with iTunes. Make the changes that you want followed by a sync.
The same applies to your 3G and your iPad when connected to iTunes.

How can I iterate through a multi-dimensional array that contains ArrayLists of unknown length?
If I know in advance how many dimensions I have I can write a nested loop.
Example for 4 dimension arry:

I'm happy to share the actual task as well as re-write the whole thing to get the job done.
I am reading an excel spreadsheet wherein several colums have atrributes which I need to capture.
I store the unique atrributes in each colum in an array; then I store all the unique value arrays in another array.
It doesn't have to be thus, that's just how I did it. If arrays of objects are difficult I can do it another way.
isocdev_mb: I use Object[] because some attributes are numeric, some are text
I then need to read another spreadsheet and select data based on the combined unique attributes captured earlier.
The final output is another spreadsheet with a combination of the attributes and the data.
abillconsl: I don't need recursion if I know how many selector columns I have as I point out in the original post.
That's how it's coded now and it works fine. Unfortunately, the number of columns and thus the size of the
parent array can change and I'm looking for a generalized routine that will handle them all.

so i have this site that i'm very happy with – problem
is, i want to be able to email clients a link to a specific part of
the site (rather than simply dropping them off at the front door).
now, i understand that there's a way to do this but i think it's a
bit over my head... and that i may have needed to have built the
site with a certain structure from the start.
a good workaround, i thought, would be to put the swf in
question in its own html file and link right to that. works like a
charm. problem is that, when i do that, i lose a feature i like a
lot – namely, the fact that i use javascript to change the
color background of the html page to match the particular section.
SO - i would either like to find a way to link to a
particular place in my flash movie (preferably a way that doesn't
involve rebuilding the whole site!) or find a way to use my quick
and dirty solution and still retain the color change aspect.

The links have to be worded with "?" because that is how you
send variables from a url string into Flash.
So its your URL, ?, Variable name, Equal sign, variable value
www.urlurl.com?variable=value
In you existing FLA you just need some actionscript on the
first frame to redirect if there is a url variable present. For
example if you use the variable called url and give it a few value
here is the check for it:

That is just an example of how to use url variables and
checking them in flash. If you find a better way of making the user

I seem to have fried my iPad 1

Actually it's my wife's iPad that I seem to have fried .....
Whilst syncing to her MacBookPro, the iPad got into a weird loop where it kept asking if I wanted to transfer the purchases made on the iPad to iTunes, I'd say yes, it would go away and do it then come back and ask the question again. It was also reverting the apps/pages layout that we were fine tuning for her. Anyway, at some point I was doing a software update and pulled the wrong USB cable by mistake .... big oops apprently !!
At first no matter what I did, I could only get the apple logo to show. Holding down the power button for 10 seconds does not bring up the power slider, holding both does nothing, holding both for 30 seconds then letting go the power button does nothing more than cycle through black screen and apple logo ....
I seemed to have got the correct sequence of events including pluging it into the mac whilst holding the home button or something like that so that I now have the connect to itunes logo on the front screen of the iPad. The problem now is that even when I try and restore the iPad to factory settings, iTunes goes away and does some stuff, the iPad seems to recycle and even shows the apple logo with a progress bar (empty) but then itunes eventually comes back (after "waiting for the iPad" for a few minutes) with an error that says;
"The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknown error occured (9). When I hit the "More Information" button, I get sent to an Apple Website that reccomends a whole set of procedures that I have followed twice now, without any more progress.
I have been scouring google from top to bottom trying to find a way to reload the firmware from scrathc, but I end up at Jailbreak options that I am not comfortable with.
My git feeling is that I have messed up the firmware ..... any help out there?

Paul cb. I get the same error message (9), which relates to an apparent dropping of the USB connection. I have now tried 3 different usb cables on 2 different mac's, same result.
Reading as much as I can understand, there appears to be a dependance on an SHSH signature file. I have never Jailbroken any of my apple hardware, but there is much information that can be gleaned from the associated writings.
I am not a genius my any means, but it appears as though (iMhO) that somehow the files (or some of them) on the iPad have become corrupted and the all important SHSH file is not there. This causes iTunes to have no reference point for restoring the iPad. Also, it is not possible to force a new firmware (Option click restore in itunes) without an SHSH file, this results in an error that says that the iPad is not eligible for this version ... or something like that.
MY problem is that in Dubai we do not have an Apple Genius bar and that you guys and gals are the closest I will get to an Apple Genius. The iPad was purchased for me in the States when my daughter was visting there so, I am pretty much sitting on a brick right now ... (my wife has annexed my iPad 2 until I can fix her iPad 1 .... sighs).
Unless there are any other tactics that you guys can suggest (without Jailbreaking) then I think I may be at the end of the road ..

I have painted myself in a corner and I need your help to get out.
I have developed a class which runs as a thread. Lets call it Viewer(). Viewer() gets it's instructions by reading a Vector() object, call it vec, which it creates.
Viewer v = new Viewer(filename);

v.vec.add(instruction);so far, so good.
The application which starts viewer(), call it App, first starts calls another thread (call it KeyMonitor) to monitor an application (an emulator program).
Now KeyMonitor() needs to put instructions on the Vector() object of Viewer().
KeyMonitor m = new(KeyMonitor);
Thread tm = Thread(m);
tm.start();
Viewer v = new Viewer(filename);
Thread tv = Thread(v);
tv.start();KeyMonitor() sees something and passes to Viewer().
Now I have painted myself into a corner. If vec (the Vector object) is in Viewer(), v.vec.whatever, then how can KeyMonitor add() to it?
If vec is created in App, the main program, then Viewer() references it as App.vec.whatever. Viewer is no longer independent, can't be used.
Can anyone help me out of this corner.

I tried your solution, but it did not work with my laptop. After I restart the laptop, the language does not change and I cannot type the password in English language. Do you have any other suggestion?

Windows or apple it makes no difference, if you don't have the install discs you can't install.
Did you buy the machine with Adobe (you don't say what adobe program you're talking about) installed? If so the vendor should have given you the discs or else it's technically a pirated copy. If you're talking about acrobat (which is free) then you should be able to find older versions on the adobe site.
