I want to wipe my MacBook Pro and reinstall factory settings... Help???

do I need discs?

Throw away any files which may contain sensitive data and securely empty the Trash.
If it shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, insert its original disk and restart the computer with the C key held down.
If it shipped with Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, restart with the Command and R keys held down.
Use the Disk Utility to erase the partition with Mac OS X installed, and then install a fresh OS onto it.
If you're going to sell or give away the computer, include the disk with it, or press the Option key as well when restarting from the recovery partition.

Hello, I am trying to reset my macbook pro to its factory settings but I can't type the name of the formatted disk nor can I click on erase, as this feature is disabled. The 'type name' space and the 'erase' button are in light grey - Could you please assist?

    Hello!
Did you boot to the Internet Recovery Partition?
    Here’s how:
1/ Make sure your computer is completely shut down.
2/ You’ll have to be quick next: Press the Mac’s power button. As soon as you either hear the loud chime, or see the display light up - usually after a second or 2 - on your keyboard press [alt] + [cmd] + [r] Keep these keys on your keyboard pressed until you see a spinning globe with the text “starting Internet Recovery” You might have to connect to your Wi-Fi network before you can continue here.
After a few minutes, you’ll be presented with a Utilities screen. This is the Internet Recovery partition. If this step is already giving you problems, try using a USB-keyboard. It doesn’t have to be an Apple-keyboard. If you have a Windows-tailored keyboard laying around, use the “Windows-flag” key in stead of the [cmd]-key and it should also work.
3/ Choose Disk Utility and click [continue]

  • HT1291 MacBook Pro Reset to factory settings.

I have a new MacBook Pro that is right out of the box.  During the data migration from the PC power was interrupted and I've been told I need to start over.  But after several tries I keep loosing the conection and I think I need to start over.  How do I reset a 2013 MacBook Pro to the factory settings?

To reset your computer, use OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 Follow these steps:
    1. Press Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
    2. Select Macintosh HD on the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    3. Close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X. After installing OS X, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore the backup, so do it

  • How do i reset a macbook pro to the factory settings

How do I reset a Macbook to the original factory settings?

    Restore to original:
Boot from your grey installer DVD disc 1, or SL retail installer disc (hold down the C key on startup or hold down Alt/option on start and choose the installer disc).
OK the language page (if present).
From the installer screen, do not click 'continue' - go to the menu bar and choose Disk Utility; depending on the OS version it may be in the Utilities menu or Tools menu.
In DU, select your internal drive in the sidebar (the top item with the makers name and serial no.).
    Run Repair Disk (not permissions). If that comes up as disk OK;
Click the partition tab. Select the partiton from the drop-down above the graphic; 1 partiton is all you need. Go to the options button and ensure that the partition scheme is GUID  and the file system to Mac OS Extended (Journalled).
Name the partiton (usually Macintosh HD), click Apply.
When that's finished, select the new volume in the sidebar (indented to the right below the drive) and go to the Erase tab.
Select Security options and select zero data (one pass is more than sufficient). Click erase. That will take quite some time; probably measured in hours and dependant on the size of the drive.
(The purpose of this step is to ensure there is no recoverable data left on the drive).
When that's completed, close DU and continue with the installation.
When installation is complete, after the restart ignore the setup assistant and shut down the Mac (you may have to do this by holding down the power button).
The Mac is now ready for the new owner to personalise it as if new.
Be sure to pass on the original grey discs with the Mac, and the SL retail disc if you loaded SL.

If anyone is useing this product I would love to hear from you. I want to change over to macbook pro for our small company but we are useing simply accounting on our current windows based pc

I don't believe this program runs on a Mac. if it does it would be running using a Windows emulation program like Parallels or VMWare or running in Windows directly through a Boot camp partition. In any case it's running in Windows so you have all the experience you need.

  • Wireless connectivity issues with Macbook Pro and At&t service HELP!!!!!

I have three Computers two PC's and one Macbook Pro( the latest model). My desktop PC is used by ethernet, my girls laptop is used wirelessly and finally my MBP was being used wirelessly.
I started off with only the two PCs and my internet connection never had a problem and I was doing everything from: on the internet to downloading.
Before I bought my MBP I had also switched from internet and phone bundle to just internet from At&t service. So when I got my first MBP I notice that I was loosing wireless connection with both my girls pc laptop and my MBP so i thought it was because I had just switched service, though they send out a service technician and we came to a conclusion that it was the MBP. (I was loosing signal via wireless and ethernet). So we tried to see if both my girls laptop(wireless) and my PC desktop (ethernet) would run into the same issue which it did not.(MBP was turned off)
So I decided to go my nearest Apple store and let them know what was going on. So I told them what was going on and they said It must be the airport card, and they ended up changing it. When I get home I discover that not only I am having the same issue but other issues too. I went back they ran some diagnostic and they said it was defective and they gave me a new one few days later.
So in the mean time that I waited for my new one to arrive I used my PC desktop and my girl kept using her laptop and guess what no issue what so ever for one whole week. Now I receive my new MBP(they bumped the specs a little), went home set it up and still the same issue though I dont have the issue when Im using via ethernet. Just a view minutes ago I tried removing the ethernet and using the airport/wireless and within a few minutes I lost the signal.
    I have the gateway 2WIRE model(2701HG-B) modem/router.
Is there something wrong? what do I have to do to make this work?

Hi Guys, I bough my Mac almost two years ago. All this time I have experienced the same issue. There are tons of discussions re this issue in the internet. Unfortunately, Apple has done nothing to fix it. I have tried a lot of different options, but they work no longer then 1-2 days. The official fix - does not exist so far. It is quit strange, isn't? I can share my experience: if you go to AirPort Utility - Manual Setup - Wireless and then change Channel, it could help you till the moment you restart your computer; next time you need to repeat it again. It takes 2 minutes. Not sure that it would work for you but you could give it a try. Well, not the best option. Anyway Apple must fix it asap! Hello Apple, do you hear us? Good luck.

  • Macbook Pro and iCloud storage questions/help

Hi all, Im needing help here as my Macbook Pro has become extremely slow and sluggish, is this because there is too much stored on it? Having iCloud should help take extra room up on the Macbook should it not?
Just general help and advice regarding these matters would be appreciated.

iCloud is a syncing facility, not a separate storage one, and any data on iCloud is duplicated on your Mac. You would do better to buy an external hard disk and use it to store bulky data such as media files.

  • Slow Macbook Pro and Reinstall of OS X

    Hello All,
I recently discovered that my macbook pro (mid 2012) was running extremely slow and occasionally when it went to sleep, after about half an hour I would find it extremely hot. Not knowing how to fix it, I took it into a Premium Service Provider (I am currently in a country in Europe which does not have an official Apple Store) and they said all that needed to be done was to reinstall the OS. So I made a bootable USB drive featuring the Mavericks install app and tried to perform a clean install (I thought it would be better to start from scratch as I had backed up all my important data before taking it in for service). At the end of the install, it said that 'An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again.' I saw in another thread that they recommended going into Disk Utility to verify and repair the disk, but when I got there the hard drive (Macintosh HD) wouldn't show up. Similarly, it doesn't show up as a potential startup disk, and when I went back to the Install OS X program, it wasn't listed as an option to install.
I guess my question is this, is there an easy fix or should I take it back into the shop on Monday? Fortunately, I'm still covered under AppleCare so a hard drive replacement wouldn't be backbreaking.
    Thanks for all the help!

Since you're under Applecare, this isn't worth a great deal of troubleshooting time for you. A question though... when you tried the clean install, did you partition and format the HD? Does it still show up in Disk Utility? If so, partition and format then try the install.
The fact that it's running extremely hot could be an indication of a failing drive, but you can also try to reset the SMC just in case it's something else.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Reset the SMC first. It won't hurt anything.

  • 13" Macbook Pro i5 - reinstall mac OS help!

    Hi
I just bought a 2nd hand 13" Macbook Pro i5 today... (it was first bought by previous owner in March 2011).
Tried to reinstall Mac OS Snow Leopard with the cd that comes with it.
However, it takes very long time ~10 mins to get to the select language screen, sometimes it doesn't get there and hang at apple logo..
And if it continues and I choose to install the OS, it hangs at "Install Failed: The installer could not copy the necessary support files".
I've already erased and re-create the partition on my hdd using disk utility so now I can't boot up without completing the install...
I tried to test the dvd disc on my PC and its working properly..
The dvd drive seems to work properly prior to this install (according to the previous owner)..
Also tried to boot up using Gparted cd..it works...
When i go Verbose mode while loading the Mac OS CD, i see alot of:
    disk1s2: I/O error.
    SAM Multimedia: read or write failed, SENSE_KEY = 0x04, ASC =0x08, ASCQ=0x03
Called Apple and they cannot give phone support since its over 90 days...
Can someone please advise what i shd do? bad drive or disc?

Hi guys.. the Mac OS install disc is original and reads properly in another PC.
I did a clone of that disc on a dual layer DVD (for testing purposes) and the clone copy works perfectly.
So something was wrong with the original DVD..
any idea how i can request for a install disc replacement?

  • I had to restore my 2006 MacBook Pro back to factory settings (Tiger 10.4). Can I use my Time Machine back up from Snow Leopard to put it back the way it was?

I cannot locate my Snow Leopard disks but I was able to use the Tiger disk that came with the computer to restore it. However, it completely erased it and set it back to Tiger. Can I use my Time Machine to put Snow Leopard and my data back on the computer?

You can't restore a Time Machine backup made with Snow Leopard onto a system with Tiger. You can, but you will damage Mac OS X.
In order to restore your Time Machine backup, you should have your Snow Leopard disc. Then, insert it and hold the C key while your MacBook Pro is starting. Finally, choose your language, go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar), choose the option to restore the backup and follow its steps, so you will recover Mac OS X Snow Leopard
