I was running Firefox on another computer that lost it's motherboard, was able to salvage the harddrive, but my mail files on the older hard drive have a different name, how can I pull or import those older files into firefox running on another computer?

I had been running other email clients for years and finally switched to Firefox. All the while importing my other email folders. So I had quite a large history of email. I had been backing up my system using Acronis for years. My desktop's motherboard crashed and was not worth repairing. I pulled my desktop hard drive and turned it in a standalone drive. I re-established my email on a laptop starting from scratch using Firefox. I would like to import (if possible) the emails history that is stored on the standalone drive (formerly my old hard drive). However, the names of the mail folders on the drives are different. For example: current computer the mail folder is named garlic.com. On the standalone drive (old hard drive) there are several folders and they are named, for instance; mail.garlic.com, mail.garlic-1.com , and so forth. it goes up through garlic-4.com.
How can I pull or import these older folders into my current email folder and see all my old email archives?

You are not going to be able to run your old system from the backup on this old computer as the hardware is incompatible.
You need to get a new computer or a refurbished one.

  • IT admins need to update firefox installs in the organization, but we use security software to protect hard drives, so automatic updates don't work. Is there an UpdateFirefox.zip file?

We are using Centurion Smartshield to protect the hard drives on all PCs in our organization. This software reverts the state of all drives to a default setting with each reboot, so no updates will be retained. Also, staff do not have the permissions to install most software updates. The Centurion Smart Control Console provides a way to remotely execute updates, but they refer to an UpdateFirefox.zip file. I'm wondering if such a file is available from Firefox. I know updates are not provided in an MSI.

    I commiserate.
I believe the heavy reliance on the javax.net.ssl.keyStore system property is just wrong. An applet-local key manager for client-certificates would be really helpful.
The current (1.4) plugin design includes its own certificate management ui (control panel). I feel this is wrong design. Why is there no upcall available from the applet framework into the host/browser's certificate management? The same sort of thing happened with the move from awt to swing. The not-invented-here mentality? What's next, a special java filesystem? :) Luckily applets are normally kept away from files, but with the impending service-oriented world, with certificates being passed about like Amoeba capabilities, better integration of the plugin with the host's security management is going to be a sore need.

    its very specific.
If you are seeing the old Apple ID with regard to this Mac, then it would seem that somehow you have incorporated the ID in the setup of this new Mac.
Iphoto i use never used imovie.
If you began using iPhoto without having Accepted it into your Apple ID, then that would explain why you are unable to update the app. If any of the iLife apps are used without Accepting them into your Apple ID, the ability to accept them will lapse and you will not be able to update them.

  • I have lost Lightroom 5.6 due to a hard drive crash. The old hard drive has been replaced. How can I get LR5 back? I don't have a disc. I still have my LR4 disc and key. I have another adobe  key, but don't know if it relates to LR5.

I have lost Lightroom 5 due to a crashed hard drive. I don't have a back up disc, and I dont think I have a key. I have a an adobe key recorded but don't know if it relates to LR5. I have an LR4 disc and key. LR5 is still intact and running on my laptop, but I need to use LR% on my desktop PC. I need an address to try a download so that I can try the key which might fit it. Any ideas how I can transfer the program (with key) from my laptop? Any other ideas?

    Just download and install.
you can find by internet search for "download Lightroom", or click here:

  • Files on external FAT32 hard drive have disappeared

My friend attached her external USB hard drive to my Mac. She didn't know that she was supposed to eject her drive before pulling the USB cord.
Now, she can't see any of her files when she attaches her drive to her Windows XP machine. She's very upset; this drive has years worth of files, including some wonderful photos from a workshop we both went to.
I was able to attach the drive to a Linux computer, and I can see file and directory names. I wasn't able to change into any of the directories, though.
When we attach it to a Windows machine, the drive looks completely blank, and Windows asks if we want to format it.
    What should we do?

if the drive is still visible on your computer, copy everything to your HD and burn a CD or DVD with the data. Then you can reformat the flashdrive and copy the data back onto it.
Obviously you have learned the lesson of never disconnecting a drive without first ejecting it.
I have two flashdrives that I use on my MBPs and my PCs and it has never lost any data, but even a flashdrive should regularly be backed up onto something more permanent.
Your friend obviously has been yanking the flashdrive out of her PC without ejecting it and that's a no-no also. There's an icon in the Windows taskbar on the lower right that is used to eject any portable hardware, from flashdrives to cameras, to whatever. Let her know that it is very important to properly eject the drive, no matter what computer it is on.

  • Hard drive failing, need new Mac, how can I keep iTunes 10.7

I've got a mini mac, ca. 2009.  The hard drive has begun to fail, and the external monitor is also beginning to go (once all-black screens is now mostly pale grey.
I have 75,000 songs on an external drive.  I tried iTunes 11 when it came out, and had to roll back to 10.7 because iTunes 11 is simply not capable of managing a large library.  Lack of multiple screens alone is enough to drive me away.
When I asked at the Apple store if there is any way to keep iTunes 10, they laughed in my face, then got the Apple-knows-better-than-you tone and said there is no way to use an "inferior" version of itunes anymore.
    Is there any hope?

Any new Mac will come with the newest iTunes installed.  Now something I don't really know much about but could be an issue is according to what I have read iTunes is now more intergrated into the system of the Mac.  It used to be a pretty much stand-alone application which you didn't even have to install.  How integrated I don't know.  It may still be possible to delete iTunes using one of the many reverting back to an older version method posted here. Using older operating system components is not something you can do though, since they may well cause instability in a computer that was designed with a newer system in mind.  However, I don't know if iTunes is really that much part of the system.
Realize also that you will be forced to upgrade should you ever buy an i-device since those require the version of iTunes current when you make the purchase.
Here's a downgrade post I had in my archives:
Back up your computer first, in case the unexpected happens
Here's a step-by-step method and you may find it easier to follow than alternative methods I have posted below.
    Downgrade iTunes 11 to iTunes 10.7 - http://www.emacconsulting.com/apple/itunes/downgrade-itunes-11-to-itunes-10-7/
If the above does not work, or you want to do it without Pacifist, or you want to know what is actually going on when downgrading, or you encounter error messages, here's more details:
    Quit iTunes.
Get iTunes 10.7 from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576 or the direct download link at:  http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes10/041-7195.20120912.d3uzQ/iTunes10.7.dmg
Do a few preparatory steps by making sure all iTunes components are not running and cleaning old files.   See https://discussions.apple.com/message/20475394.  Do steps 3 and 4.  Steps 6-8 may be also useful but I don't know if they are essential.  Some of the other steps are not necessary, duplicate steps listed later in my post or are perhaps even unhelpful in the process.
Replace the iTunes 11 application with iTunes 10.7.  Simply dragging the application to the trash may not work. Lion (OSX 10.7) and newer systems have iTunes integrated into the operating system and deleting is a bit more involved.  Two ways to do this are:
    1.  (Easier) Use the shareware Pacifist utility (http://www.charlessoft.com/) to install iTunes 10.7 including all associated system files. Details at http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=16400819&postcount=6
    2. (More work) Check this reference on how to delete the iTunes application itself:
Delete iTunes in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion - http://osxdaily.com/2011/09/13/delete-itunes-in-mac-os-x-10-7-lion/
After deleting the application there may be other files that need downgrading too. See the note about error -42408 at the end of this post. You may want to tuck these away somewhere safe until you have completed the installation of iTunes 10.7.  I have not tested this but ideally if newer versions are not found then the installer will put in the old versions. This may include these files in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ which apparently get updated by iTunes 11:
    AirTrafficHost.framework
    CoreFP.framework
    DeviceLink.framework
    iTunesAccess.framework
    MobileDevice.framework
After doing one of the two procedures above you will have to rescue the most recent old iTunes library from your iTunes > Previous Libraries folder. Rename it "iTunes Library.itl"  and replace the existing one in the iTunes folder. A newer version of iTunes irreversibly updates your library file so you have to replace it with the old one or you will get an error message. Note, this will revert your library to the version at the time of the upgrade and you will have to update any changes made since.  See:

  • My hard drive no longer works. How can I erase it?

I have a 2007 Macbook Pro 15 inch. When I turn it on, eventually I get the message that the hard drive can't be found. I've replaced the computer with a new model, and I want to dispose of it. But I know I need to clear all the personal information off it. How can I do it? Can I boot it up by connecting it to my new Macbook pro?

Buy an enclosure for the hard drive from OWC - USB enclosures can be had for as little as $20. Once you have the drive in the enclosure, plug it in and boot up normally from your new internal drive. Use Disk Utility to securely erase the 'old' drive (if it can be erased) using the secure erase method.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Hard drive crashed... How can I recover my Photoshop install.

bought full blown CS6 (IIRC) for use in processing astrophotograph images on a dedicated laptop about 3 years ago...  Ssd just died.  Lost everything and now need to reinstall all sorts of stuff.  But my photoshop was purchased via download, and I can't find (heck remember) what I might have done with the key (?).  My email, address, etc have not changed.
how would anyone recommend I go about working this with Adobe support?
I Don't know where to start, and I've dozens of other expensive software for which I've no disks either. (anyone else hate that nothing comes with discs anymore)
thanks so so much in advance for any pointers, or assistance!  Apologies if this isn't even the right forum
    regards

The first thing you oughta do is contact Adobe Support thru chat and ask them to reset your activations so that you have the activation you lost back for your use.  I don't tknow if they can help you with your serial number but chances are it will be needed for the deactivation.
As far as finding your serial number goes, if you registered your software when you first installed it then the serial number should be available thru your Adobe account online in the products section.  You might also find a download link there if you originally downloaded thru Adobe.
For chat: (may not be available on the weekend)
For the link below click the Still Need Help? option in the blue area at the bottom and choose the chat option...

  • Does anybody know how to resolve error 36 which comes up when I'm trying to save files onto my external hard drive?, Does anybody know how to resolve error 36 wgich comes up when I'm trying to save files onto my external hard drive?

When I try to drag files into my hard drive, it says the Finder can't complete the operation because some data can't be read or written (Error Code -36). This is happening even when dragging files back into the external drive which had originally come from there. Does anyone know how to deal with this issue? Thanks!

Error -36 is, as X423424X says, a generic I/O error. It doesn't say anything about what caused the error, or indeed where it occurred (source or target).
You have to describe exactly your action when the error occurs. Is the ext'l drive you mentioned formatted as NTFS (Win default file system)? Without additional software, Mac OS X cannot write to NTFS, it can only read from it.

  • How can I transfer a whole hard drive of xp to mac, How can I transfer a whole hard drive of xp to mac

Hello, my dilemma is I have a laptop with windows xp and all of my personal files and games and I want to donate the laptop to relative and I wondered if I had a  chance of basically mirroring the hard drive to a partition onto my MacBook.
    Thanks
Ps, would I need any driver for anything? I'm a is it of a novice when it comes to bootcamp.

Paragon Drive Copy Pro may be able to help you. From their spec sheet you can migrate your PC to a virtual environment like Virtual Box or VMwareFusion. I would contact their support and find out if there are any issues with Mac OSX.
