I want to downgrade my 2009 IMac from Mavericks to Snow Leopard.  Please explain how I do this.

Insert the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD, restart the computer with the C key held down, and install Snow Leopard onto a blank volume. If needed, use the Disk Utility to erase or repartition the internal drive.

  • I would like to upgrade from Snow Leopard. The " Install OS X Mavericks to begin installation" link is black. Is it because I back-up with an outside back-up service? I do not know why it will not allow me to begin upgrade. I feel silly even asking.

Would like to upgrade to Mavericks, but just a slight problem.

    Hi Histotek,
You may want to make sure that your computer meets the system requirements for upgrading to Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) -
Apple - OS X Mavericks - Read the technical specifications.
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
In particular the supported models part is important.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Downgrading from Mavericks to Mountain Lion

So currently I'm not satisfied with having Mavericks OS X on my macbook, particularly because of the gradually decreasing disk space that happens each time I turn on my macbook. I've attempted to clear caches like the IconServices in order to make space, but more space is gradually depleted, especially when I use third-party software like VueScan, which I find essential to my lifestyle. I wish to downgrade from Mavericks back to the Mountain Lion OS I initially had when I received macbook. Before I do, I need to ask the following:
    1) Will I need to buy a new set of the OS software, or will I be able to perform a downgrade through the restart-and-recovery process I've seen posted?
    2) Should I backup my drive? If so, what would you recommend I use? (PS. I did not perform a backup before upgrading to Mavericks)

    TheArashi wrote:
can I clean install Mountain Lion instead if I choose to do this?
If you use Internet Recovery (Command + Option + R during restart; hold until you see a spinning globe and progress bar) - it'll take a while to connect to Apple's servers - up to 15 minutes. In any case, once you're there, you'll see a Utilities window. Choose Disk Utility and choose to erase your drive (or course, back up your stuff first!). When that is done, back to the Utilities window and choose to install Mac OS X. If yours came with mountain lion, that is what you should be getting as internet recovery/erasing the drive will result in reinstalling the original OS version. Be sure not to erase your hard drive until after you're booted into recovery and are at the Utilities window.

  • HT201364 I would like to update from OSX 10.7 to 10.9 but...

I would like to update from OSX 10.7 to 10.9 but the store says I can not
run Mavericks on my computer.  Why is that?  My hardware specs are:
    Model Name:          Mac Pro
    Model Identifier:          MacPro1,1
    Processor Name:          Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed:          3 GHz
    Number of Processors:          2
    Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Processor):          4 MB
    Memory:          4 GB
    Bus Speed:          1.33 GHz
    Boot ROM Version:          MP11.005C.B08
    SMC Version (system):          1.7f10
And over 700Gb of disc space.
Is this machine really too old to run Mavericks?  Yes, I would dearly like to purchase a -new- MacPro, and I probably will soon, but this "old" machine still has a lot of life in it and upgrading to 10.9 would make it that much nicer when I give it to my niece.

Kappy> not capable of booting a 64-bit kernel or running 64-bit extensions.
Huh? My MacPro has two 64bit Xeon processors!!
    jayv> I don't think it's the Xeon as it is 64-bit.
    Yes, thank you!  :-)
jayv> Apple does not explain why it has set these specific limits as minimum requirements.
I'll say.  That is probably why my previous post which questioned possible "marketing" decisions has been removed from this discussion.
So now I have a museum piece that can go up on eBay in another 30 years.  Nice.
Thank you all for the rapid replies!

  • I would like to downgrade the ios

Before a couple of weeks I have upgraded my ipad 2 to ios 6.1.3 , and I am not pleased with the performance and I would like to downgrade to ios 6.1 , but when I restore the ipad, an error pops up "ipad could not be restored . an unknown error occured (3194)"
I have asked some expert, and it appears to be something to do with "shsh blobs"....????
Why apple is complicated! If some would like to downgrade, he should have the ability to do it easily, insted of jumping from discussion blog to another! trying to find an answer for simple problems!!!

i've heard you can put your ipod into DFU mode by holding the power button for 3 seconds then keep holding the power button but press the home button and hold it for another 10 seconds then let go of power button and hold the home button for 15 seconds. itunes will pop up saying it has discoverd an ipad 2 on recovery mode and must be restored right click restore and pick your ios version that you need to download ( i will put link) and then hit restore and it should work.

  • Downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion

I am considering to downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion, and understand I would loose the maps app and some features... but is it worth it it so I dont have to continuously reboot my mac, so I can use a program every time ?
The problems I am having with mavericks, even when I have done a few tweaks , is that after running a few programs such as mail, safari, garageband  first and then loading photobooth... photobooth or any video app tends to lag , and the video is recorded lagging. A reboot fixes this if i start the program after reboot and not run any programs before.
Another issue is when I am doing my artwork, drawing in photoshop or manga studio... the pen tablet begins to lag as well, so I would have to save my work, reboot and then continue working until Mavericks starts misbehaving again.
This mac had its drive wipped clean before It became my personal mac, and I requested Mountain Lion, since I prefered it, but Mavericks was installed.
I dont mind Mavericks... its just this rebooting to fix or refresh system... is getting annoying when I need to get some artwork done.
