ICal Helper in a spin

If I enable alarms in iCal preferences, the iCalHelper process spins itself into oblivion at 100% CPU until it crashes every time it runs.
I have tried deleting the plist files relating to iCal and backing up/deleting/restoring my calendars but to to avail.
This problem seems to have been triggered by my machine having it's date reset to 1980 following a logic board replacement but I can't be sure.
Any suggestions will be gratefully received.
For the technical minded here are the first few lines of the crash dump...

I'm having the same problem after my battery ran out of juice (I faintly remember having clicked on a message saying that the date and time was reset to around 2000...). For the time being I've ticked "Turn off all alarms" in the Advanced panel of iCal's Preferences. Meanwhile, I've tried the following solution - though none of them seem to have worked:
(1) delete all calendars and reset from mobileme (resulting in all calendars being deleted from mobileme too...so I had to restore iCal calendars from a backup on my harddrive)
(2) resetting iCal calendar from mobileme (again the problem persisted).
I've also called Apple Care and did I number of things with them (incl. booting into safe mode, flashing video ram, creating a new user account and replicating issue there, deleting all plist files related to iCal in ~/Library/Preferences and ~/Library/Calendar) but unfortunately to no avail.
Can anyone please help?
Thanks!

  • ICal Helper Crashing (Snow Leopard 10.6.2)

I no longer get iCal alarm notifications on my desktop. I believe it's because iCal Helper keeps crashing (log example at the end of this message). I've tried deleting iCal caches, preferences, et al. to no avail. I really hope that it's not caused by one or more corrupt events because the process of elimination would be extremely painful given how many meetings are in my calendar. Any ideas are much appreciated. Thanks!

    Brian,
Did this behavior start after applying the Mac OS X 10.6.2 Update using Software Update. If so, try downloading and reinstalling the Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update (Combo).
Have you backed up your iCal data using iCal>File>Export...>iCal Archive? If not do so now.
Since you appear to be using MobileMe, also try: Mac OS X v10.5, v10.6: Resetting the SyncServices folder.

  • ICal Helper crashing

I am using iCal 3.0.2 under Leopard 10.5.2 on an iMac 24" 2.16Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo.
For the last several days, none of my iCal alarms have fired. When I open the Console and check the system.log file, I find that the iCal Helper App is crashing. It crashes once every hour and whenever I create a new alarm.
Every hour at nn:05:32, the following appears in system.log:

It also appears whenever I create an iCal reminder. Other than the non-firing reminders, iCal appears to be working fine.
Can anyone shed any light on what is wrong?

My problem is similiar, except it is also slowing the machine down to a crawl. I've had to open up the activity monitor and force quit in order for the machine to start working properly again.

  • Why does the 'iCal helper' keep appearing in my dock?

After upgrading to 10.5.6 today the iCal helper application keeps launching and staying in my dock. It's not marked as a log-in item, and doesn't necessarily launch when i log-in. It just launches randomly every hour or so.
I've read that it is the program that allows iCal to display alerts when it's not running, but it never used to be visible in the dock, it doesn't even have a real application icon.
Does someone know how to prevent it from showing up in the dock??

  • ICal Help

I don't need my desktop computer (iMac 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo- still running Snow Leopard-10.6.8)  to give an alarm. When, in iCal preferences, I click the little ? mark I get the message "Helpviewer cannot open this content". I get the same messsage if I try to go into iCal help via basic 'Finder' Mac Help and scroll, under the Home button to iCal Help.
Is this a preference (.plist file) problem?
Also, I'll toss this in for a friend who is blind and has, to date, hated Macs dues to accessibility issues but is now considering buying one:
    Are there different Alarm sounds?
I have looked under the iCal prefs (Snow Leopard) but can't find any alarm sound options.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help with either of these.
    KK

Beautiful! Thanks Roger. I knew that I'd seen that somewhere....
BTW I fixed my Helpviewer prob. Had to go in as another user, "forever" allow akmaiedgenet (I think ) access a couple of times then got into 2 places within the System Library that was storing the permissions, dropped them into my public box then re-signed in as me, replaced the existing files with the newly created ones (which may have become corrupted?). Then, when I launched iCal Helpviewer worked just fine.

  • ICal Helper?????

What is iCal Helper and how do I get rid of it? I have searched in Spotlight, but can't find it.
I installed Leopard and one of my biggest headaches with it is that everything stalls and slows to a crawl about every half hour ........and lots of times, I'm only doing a little web browsing in Safari .......When this happens, it is ALWAYS iCal Helper and it needs to be killed in Activity Monitor. When I kill it, everything begins to operate normally .....for a while, anyway. It' very annoying and just about ready to make me give up on Leopard for the time being.
    Thoughts, anyone?

Leopards iCal is a HUGE step backward.
While it may be "prettier" it is totaly designed for intigration for the iPhone.
As far as using it for buisness, a step in the wrong direction!
The info drawer is gone and replaced by a "bubble"... useless.
    Going back to Tiger myself.

  • Missing iCal Helper

I cannot locate iCal helper. I would like to add it to the account login items.
I opened the iCal package and looked in the resources folder where it should be, looked in all of the other package folders, searched the computer and libraries, searched for invisible files, but cannot locate it.
There is a preference file for it that is current.
My wife had accidently removed it from her account login items.
I have re-applied the 10.6.3 combo update but still no iCal helper.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA

    Nicholas,
...I thought that iCal Helper was used to show the iCal alerts when iCal is closed.
AFAIK, that is no longer the case, and it is the reason iCal Helper is now located in the System/Library/Frameworks Directory, instead of the Application package. It is activated by the system on a prescribed interval without regard to the active status of the iCal application.
    ;~)

  • ICal helper memory leak

I have recently imported my account through timemachine from my MacBook Pro to a new MacBook. Everything seems to be working OK (although somehow slow) except for iCal.
It seems that the iCal helper allocates around 1.5 GB of real memory and stalls the rest of the applications. Of course, no alarms appear in this imported account (they do in other accounts with new calendars). After having read some of the discussions I removed the following directories:
    ~/Library/Calendars
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.iCal
and restored my iCal (from a backup file). Now there is no leak problem, but no alarms either... the iCal helper does not even start.
    Can someone help, please?

Very helpful, many thanks! For me, this problem came up after my PowerBook G4 battery died, and the clock reset to 1969 -- when I reset the clock was when it began trying to send me all my alarms from 2003, and the iCal Helper memory problems started, and iCal Helper became unresponsive in Activity Monitor.
In addition to ~/Library/Caches and the others, I found I also had to delete ~/Library/Calendars, to get rid of all calendars except Home & Work -- without that, all calendars and all problems remained.
With that deleted, iCal (v 3.0.3) opened with just Home and Work, and I deleted Work as suggested. While I watched Activity Monitor, I briefly saw a new app launch, with a name like iCal Sync. Returning to iCal, all my calendars had been spontaneously restored, a modified ~/Library/Calendars reappeared and everything works fine with practically no effort.
Thanks again for ending hours of hassle!

  • ICal Helper error "GrowlSafari"

Recently in my console.log I've been seeing a lot of these messages:
2006-11-18 19:45:09.983 iCal Helper[4839] * -[NSBundle load]: Error loading code /Library/InputManagers/GrowlSafari/GrowlSafariLoader.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Grow lSafariLoader for bundle /Library/InputManagers/GrowlSafari/GrowlSafariLoader.bundle, error code 2 (link edit error code 0, error number 0 ())
Has anyone got an idea of what this means, or how to get rid of them occurring?
    thanks
    S

    Answering my own question here...
I found a helpful topic here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=1631033
I uninstalled GrowlSafari, then reinstalled it. I noticed that the version that was running was for PPC, and I've moved my entire installation over to an Intel MacMini, so perhaps that was part of the problem.
No errors in the past few minutes, but I won't hold my breath.

  • Ical Helper grabbing all CPU

After a migration from a MacBook with Mac OS Lion to a new MacBook Pro, iCal Helper is grabbing almost all the cpu. IF , making the use of the computer nearly impossible. After I quit iCal Helper through Activity Monitor, the system works fine.
So far I haven't been able to locate what is wrong with iCal Helper.
Can anyone help solve this issue ?

    Problem:
Your Mac's clock was set to a date in the 1960s or 1970s after a power failure. After setting your clock to the correct date and time, the iCal alarm window popped up, empty, thrashing your hard drive and causing 100% processor load.
You may have forced quit iCal Helper, but it popped up again after a while. You may have tried to let the helper app do its thing, but after several hours it just crashed. You may have googled the problem and erased several plist and cache files or exported/re-imported/re-synched your calendars to no avail. You are now left with the option of an archive & install.
    Explanation:
After setting the correct date again, iCal/iCal Helper have forgotten that you dismissed all of your past alarms, possibly reaching back to 2003 or earlier. They now try to bring them up all at once in the iCal alarm window. This may take a long time and use a lot of memory.
    Solution:
If all alarms show up eventually, you're lucky. Dismiss them all at once by clicking the red close button. You're done.
If iCal Helper crashes after a long time without showing your alarms, you have no chance to dismiss them. iCal Helper's RAM usage climbed over a certain value (maybe 4 GB), which is not allowed, and the app crashed. You will now have to dismiss the alarms in smaller chunks: Close all applications except System Preferences. Set back your system date to 2003 (or the earliest year you started to use iCal). Switch to another tab in the preferences pane to save your date. The iCal alarm window will pop up after a while (be patient) and show only alarms before your system date and time (again, be patient). Dismiss the alarms with the red close button. Then set your system date forward one year. Etc. If you have lots of alarms, you may have to do this by quarters or whatever is appropriate to not bring iCal Helper > 4GB RAM usage. When you're done, don't forget to set your clock to the correct date and time.
    Prevention:
The problem is user based. After a power failure, log in to OS X with a different admin user account. Set the date and time straight. The log in to your normal account. This way, iCal won't ever notice the date changed temporarily.

  • ICal Help - COMPLETELY UNHELPFUL

I wanted to learn about backing up iCal 2.02 in Tiger. I opened iCal Help and navigated to "How to Backup iCal Calendars." This is what it said:
How to back up iCal calendars
Learn how to back up your iCal calendars.
iCal saves your calendars as .ics files in the Calendars folder (~/Library/Calendars). You can back up your calendars by copying this folder to your backup location (file server, external hard drive, CD-ROM, and so forth).
Fine. Two problems: THERE IS NO CALENDAR FOLDER in my ~/Library folder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and there is only ONE .ics file on my whole hard drive and it's the "corestorage.ics" file in ~/Library/Application Support/iCal/Sources/39322D58-E784-4BD5-8F84-91E5F13E6714.calendar/
What the &^$&%) is up with this?

    bookman,
It looks like iCal is loading the help file from iCal 1.5. This happens sometimes and if anyone knows how to fix it, please speak up.
To backup iCal 2, just choose "Back up Database" from the file menu.
iCal 1 stored the files in ~/Library/Calendars
iCal 2 stores them in ~/Library/Application Support/iCal and as you can see, they are a bit cryptic.
Exporting and importing isn't simple, as you can end up with duplicates (as is so often mentioned here).

  • Please can anyone help me. Spinning wheel on any operation after Mavericks Install.

I would really appreciate anybody's help as I am desperate. Thank you in advance.
After 3 days I have finally got a system running again on my macbook pro mid 2012 but not a without major problem.
I am constantly getting the spinning colour wheel and i can hardly do anything. Booting up in safe mode is fine and I get no spinning wheel.
    Briefly what has happened -
4 days ago I decided to make a clean install of mavericks as I wanted to clear the clutter from my hard drive and the fact i was getting a spinning colour wheel very ten minutes for around 10 seconds thus interrupting my work. The download and install kept failing toward the end of installation process. Through recovery mode and disk utility i wiped my hard rive to put on a fresh copy but that left me with no recovery, no OS and it has taken 3 days for me and some help from a guy in the apple community to finally get a system running.
Unfortunately my only internet connection (which i sci-fi) is at a cafe in the small village I live in and I have no access to another mac or internet connection and there is no genius bar or mac tech of any sort near by. So I went through the steps of 'internet recovery mode' which kept failing but after 2 days and hours in the cafe I managed to install mountain lion onto a usb stick. With this I was able to put mountain lion on my system. It seemed fine and I then went onto download mavericks. Every time the installation failed. It takes nearly four hours for it to even download. Last night through endless attempts using the createinstallmedia method i was able to wipe my usb that had mountain lion on and put mavericks installer onto it. So i was left with a usb stick with mavericks installer on it and mountain lion on my macbook pro.
Last night I kept trying to install mavericks via Disk Utility in recovery mode because trying to install it from the usb just wasn't working. after attempts here and there and no luck - In disk utility i saw on the left My apple hard drive and underneath the name of my personally named HD. Below that was a horizontal line and below was a yellow/orange hd with disk02 labelled next to it and one called base system. Below that my usb with install os x mavericks.
This morning, in the cafe I managed to get mavericks working via disk utility in recovery mode. The problem is when i click on finder in the dock, when i try open an app, click on the menu bar - I get the coloured spinning wheel which keeps going for at least two minutes. I fixed disk permissions, run verify disk and everything was fine, started in safe mode and everything is fine. I reset my pram, smc and still i have this spinning wheel when i try do anything . I have my phone with me and its been the only way i can go online to try solve any problem what so ever but as of this moment i have typed and no spinning wheel but if open another tab it will start. I managed to download ETRECHECK and have my results, I also looked at my console which I don't understand but obviously something is wrong. I will post below my results from etrecheck and console, if someone could advice me I would be very grateful.

  • ICal Help Needed! (cannot delete calendars/events on computer and iPhone)

    Hi Everyone,
I need some help with my iCal. Background info:
    -Currently have an iPhone 3GS
    -Using Google Calendar
-Use separate calendar on iPhone (Pocket Informant)
-Wanted to sync all event from Outlook to Google Calendar to iCal to two calendars on phone (this became an issue with alarms so began attempting to delete all events from the original iPhone calendar that I do not want to use)
I started by syncing my Outlook (one way) with my Google Calendar, which syncs with the iCal on computer and Pocket Informant on iPhone, as well as iCal on iPhone. Duplicate alarms started occurring on the phone (PI and iCal). I then attempted to delete all events from the iCal on the computer. One calendar remains, one that I subscribed to from Yahoo Sports. I have tried everything to delete this calendar, but it seems impossible. After I sync the phone, the subscribed calendar shows up as well as birthdays and one calendar from my Google Calendar, on my phone.
So, the issues, and what I would eventually like to see:
    1. I would like all events cleared from iCal on computer (currently just subscribed calendar that will not delete)
    2. I would like to delete all events from calendar on phone (subscribed calendar, birthdays, and one calendar from Google) *I cannot even delete these events by hand on my phone.
    3. In the end I would like to just continue to sync Outlook with Google which syncs with PI and then do nothing with iCal (on phone and computer) *Well really I would like events from Google synced with iCal on computer, but this doesn't seem feasible so I would settle with not using it at all.
The only thing I can think of to do at this point is to delete iCal, but I am not even sure this would correct the calendar issue on my phone as I am unable to delete that and the sync does not seem to be working correctly.
Any help on this would be much appreciated!
    Thank you in advance!!

The edit feature was working correctly with the calendars and stopped. Performed a sync through iTunes removing syncing preferences first. Did not resolve the issue. I am considering restoring the iphone.

  • Events showing on iPhone but not in MobileMe or iCal - Help!

Hello. I wonder if someone can help please. This problem has been going on for a little while and is not specific to the iPhone 4, it also occurred on my iPhone 3G before this so it's not hardware specific.
I use MobileMe to sync Contacts, Calendars and Bookmarks to my iMac. It works beautifully and I'm happy with that. However, I've started to notice that recent birthday events (simple annual repeating events with a title something like "John Wood's birthday) are repeating themselves on my iPhone - only. In fact, sometimes one is repeated and then a slightly differently titled event also appears on the iPhone, like "John's birthday" plus "John Wood's birthday". The odd thing is I can't find the duplicate or slightly different events anywhere in iCal or the MobileMe calendar and I also can't delete them from the iPhone as there is no Edit option.
One example is that I had an event for my friend Jane Mulberry, which said "Jane Mulberry's birthday". This was set to repeat every year and I would then add some text into the Notes field indicating whether I'd sent a card or not. Jane got married, so at some stage I must have edited or added another entry, as there is an additional entry (only on the iPhone) which says "Jane Cumberland's birthday" (her new married name). So, I have two entries but can only edit the older one in her maiden name. The new one (Jane Cumberland's birthday) cannot be edited and I can't find any trace of it in iCal or MobileMe.
I'm rather bemused and have been looking at this occasionally over the last few months without finding a solution - and it's getting a bit irritating now!
Please note that I am rather reluctant to start deleting whole calendars etc, although I do appreciate something drastic might have to be attempted. It's just that my husband and I use the calendar a lot! He syncs his iPod Touch via MobileMe as well and we have a calendar each.
By the way, the birthday events issue is only in mine.
I hope this is a clear explanation of the issue.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thank you.
P.S. I don't sync any contacts, calendar events or mail via iTunes. It's all done only via MobileMe.

The entries you are now seeing are held in a special Birthdays calendar that has been implemented in iOS4.
The Calendar gets its information from your Contacts on the iPhone.
It can be switched off by deselecting it in the Calendars page (top left button in the Calendars app)
The Mac also has a similar Birthdays Calendar that gets its info from the Apple Address Book and can be switched on/off as required (Find it under "Subscriptions" in the left hand pane of iCal, or in Preferences, General, Show Birthday Calendar)

  • Lost all my calendars in ical - help!

I recently attempted to set up Google Calendars as a link between my wife's calendar in Outlook and my ical. Having set up a Google Calendar account in ical I tried to get the calendars to sync without success. The next day when I booted up my Mac ical was blank and no calendars were visible on the left. I am also unable to get ical preferences to open even though it is not greyed out. I have a Mobile Me account, an iphone 4 which still has all my calendar info but it doesn't sync either via MM or USB. I have the latest updates for itunes, OSX and iphone 4.
Can I reinstall ical, will this solve the problem and where do I find the download, I couldn't see it on Apple's support section?
    Many thanks for any help.
