ICal scripting an alarm

I have events in a calendar set up to email an alarm for when I need to service certain machines that are under a service agreement. Then the person will log the call using the system number that I have in notes from their email.
I am trying to eliminate the person and have the call automatically logged and print out.
AS can't get anything out from the notes so I thought I would put the system number in the location field so I could get it.
I need to write a script that will be triggered from an iCal alarm and then go and get the system number out of the location field for that event when it comes up.
but I am having trouble trying to get the current event in iCal.
I am not sure if I explained this very well but
I just need a way to get a number from the current event that triggered the alarm so I can add it to the rest of my script.
Thanks
darock

There is no current event in iCal. Austin Kinsella posted a work around in this thread.

  • Ical e-mail alarm and sending e-mails to self  will not sync with Gmail

    Hello, my mac mail is not able to fetch a e-mail alarm sent from ical.
    when the alarm goes off it is sent to my Gmail account and I am able
    to view it in my browser but not in my Mail program on my Mac. Has
    anybody else had or have this problem and is there anything to
    rectify? it. I have spoken to Apple support and they seem to think it
    is a Gmail issue. I am not able to fetch emails sent to myself in my
    Mail program on my Mac either, I am only able to view on my browser.
    All other emails are fetched properly. Perplexing!

    I've had several clients tell me that they can't send from themselves - to themselves on a gmail account. They can see the messages in the gmail webmail interface, but the messages won't download to the mail program.
    I suspect it's part of gmail's spam controls. It's a common spammer technique to send messages with the From: address the same as the To: address.
    Another thought, hasn't gmail touted the user's ability to use the 5 or 7 GB of online storage? Maybe you use it by sending yourself an email and wouldn't want it downloaded back to your mail program?
    Sorry for the lack of perfect information about gmail, I only set up an account so that I could help clients with it, not to use it for myself

  • ICal scripting

    Hi there
    It's been 2 days now that I decided to make a script for an automation of iCal, and I give up ;p.
    First of all, can anyone tell me where can I find a complete reference of the iCal scripts (i.e. all the objects and methods that are scripted in iCal, like the "calendar" object).
    What I want to do, is to export all my calendars to a specific location (I'm lookinf fot the export methods using applescript). Does anyone has a hint?
    Thx a lot
    iMac 24' 2,16GHz CodeDuo2 GeForce 7300 GT 1Gh DDR   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    One problem for sure, and perhaps one other problem, too.
    The first problem is you need to have an ellipsis in the name of the menu item. If you look in iCal's File menu, you'll see the menu item name is actually "Export…" with an ellipsis at the end (no spaces).
    You can copy paste the ellipsis from this message. On a U.S. keyboard, you can hold the Option key and press the semicolon ( ; ) to get an ellipsis. In the Edit menu of most apps, you can choose "Special Characters…" at the bottom of the menu to show the Character Palette. Or you can show the Input Menu in the menu bar by selecting it in International Preferences in System Preferences, in the Input Menu tab. In there, the option to show the Input Menu is at the bottom of the window, and the palettes are at the top as one of the first three items in the list. The Input Menu is completely customizable by selecting anything from the list. You may also find the Keyboard Viewer useful (one of the three) to have in the Input Menu. When you press modifier keys (Command, Option, Control, Shift, or a combination) the Keyboard Viewer will show what each key will type when pressed.
    As for the Character Palette, you can select one of the ellipses in this message (such as double-clicking this one: … ) and then choose from the action button in the lower left corner of the palette (button with gear and triangle) the "Show Character Selected in Application" option. (Or look in the Punctuation category, near the top, it's the eighth character for me). Then just add it to your favorites using the same action button. Double-clicking a character will insert it wherever the cursor happens to be in whatever application is currently foremost.
    You can also use the zoom button (green button) in the Character Palette's title bar and it'll become very small showing only the character you have selected. Now you won't have to double-click, just single click the character.
    The other thing you'll want to do is make sure you've selected "Enable access for assistive devices" in the Universal Access preferences in System Preferences. That is required when you are gui scripting with AppleScript, such as using System Events to select menu items and buttons and such.
    You'll find closing the iCal window to be ineffective since it has to be open when exporting since you are using gui (graphical user interface) scripting. You'll also need to select the calendar before exporting, which will require further gui scripting since that's not an option in iCal's dictionary. You'll also need to press the "Export" button in the exporting dialog, and perhaps change the name and location if desired.
    At that point, you'll probably want to post in the AppleScript forums to get more variety of help with gui scripting since this doesn't really have anything to do with Automator anymore.

  • Ical to Iphone alarm not working

    Maybe i have a bad combination.  I'm using the iPhone 3 running OS 3.1.3 since 4 slowed the poor little down so much.
    I have iCal events which i have no problems syncing between several laptops and the iPhone, but I can't seem to get the thing to pop up an alarm on the iPhone.  I can get it to do it on iCal.
    So I've tried Growl and OmniGrowl... first i started w/ the growlit.scpt and tried to get the event in iCal to read that script but I got an error that says connection is invalid... then I bought Omnigrowl thinking I needed something with the word Omni in it... :-)  Got other pop ups on my laptop, but not on my iPhone.
    Any suggestions?  is there a "start over" button?
    thanks
    g

    Did you have any luck solving this problem? I have the same issue too, but I have an iPhone 4. Would greatly appreciate if you had any feedback. Thank you.

  • ICal audio stream alarm time limit

    I have set up an internet radio schedule in iCal using Automatot scripts as iCal alarms. However when iCal opens a stream in Windows media player ths stream does not stop once the time limit in iCal is reached, for instance when I want that stream to stop and a new stream to open in iTunes.
    Anybody know how to set a time limit either in the original Automator workflow or in iCal that will stop a WMP stream?
    Thanks
    Michael Irvine

    Definitely a code problem. You have not lived until your phone is blatting stridently as you are meeting with a patient. It has happened so frequently I cannot bring my phone into my office and need it for work.
    According to this thread this issue has been in existence since at least 2013. So MAJORLY annoying bug and has been around for over a years and STILL not addressed. How do I know?
    I was running a 4 and this was a problem on it, one I attributed to its being a technological dinosaur. I recently upgraded to the iPhone6+ & guess what? Problem is there too. Yes I have powered it on & off, done hard and soft reset. Yes I wiped BOTH phones. Yes I made sure BOTH phones were updated to the most recent software. Yes I made sure my MBl had the most recent version of iTunes, synched, tried wiping iTunes from MBP then reinstalling & resynching, wiped phones (again) and resynched. Checked all settings for alarm in "settings" and "alarm". After all the above, problem still there. Maybe should address the existing problems before releasing a new version? Last 4 years in my personal (extremely expensive) experience Apple has been taking the Microsoft approach of reseae it bugs & all.
    I remember when Apple really stood behind their products -- I sent much business your way back then -- and their customer satisfaction was the first priority (well after making cool stuff). Now? Their behavior has me, a former Apple geek, feeling EXTREMELY disillusioned (sold me several very expensive defective products that never worked & they never fixed just offered to sell me another $5,000 paperweight). The above problem -- a minor one, yes, but to spend this much $$$?!? -- just illustrates that from big to small, the mind set has changed drastically. [End Rant -- Sorry, so frustrated with Apple in general could not help myself -- have a beautiful day & may your alarms always work!]

  • Can I ical send email alarms through Thunderbird?

    Is it possible to use Thunderbird as my default application for ical rather than mail? I haven't been able to figure it out.
    If yes, how would I change it? Thunderbird is my default email program but yet mail continues to open when an email alarm needs to be sent out!
    Thanks

    yvrbos,
    I know that you said you have Thunderbird set in your Mail application but since I do not use Thunderbird, the How do I make Thunderbird my default mail program? FAQ says: go to Tools > Options..., click on "General" and check Mail, then click OK.
    Another consideration is Resetting Launch Services, by Dr. Smoke. Be sure to read the notes regarding other consequences of using this procedure.

  • ICal 3.0 alarms not occurring

    OK. So I have a pretty busy schedule, and I've set each event to send me an email 2 days prior to the event. I noticed I'm not getting emails for my events two days from now. I created a new test event to email me, and it still doesn't work.
    I exported my calendar, deleted it, and reimported it, and got a message about unsafe alarms opening other programs, and do I want to keep the "unsafe" alarms. The default is to discard them, but I chose to keep them. Created a new test event, and it still won't email me a reminder. If I change it to "message with sound" I can get an alert, but I can't get an email.
    Grrrr! What could be up with this? I have my iPhone, and want to get my email alarms on it. They worked in Tiger, and now have disappeared in Leopard.

    Here's what my test event iCal data looks like (that doesn't work). There is that "DTSTAMP" that seems to have 10:49, and "CREATED" has 10:23 in it for some reason, when I created it at 10:11:

  • ICal v3 todo Alarms gone (no option to set alam in todo anymore)

    Hi.
    I've been using iCal for over a year now and all of a sudden, I cannot set an alarm for any To-Do item. Frustrating
    My To-Dos, naturally, often have deadlines that alarms are very useful for. Now, if I need an alarm, I have to move my To-Do entry to a callendar day, which makes it hard to find and basicaly negates the purpose of having a To-Do list in the first place.
    Was this intentional by Apple, or has something gone wrong that can be fixed?
    Thanks for any help/advice.

    Hi.
    Um... Wow. I can't believe I missed that. Surely I've been doing it that way for months and months and, somehow, suddenly, I couldn't see it for looking. :/ I won't bother trying to claim that "Due Date" was missing and has come back... though... nah. Can't be sigh
    Thanks (for reminding me just how much 'm losing it! :P)

  • MS IE toStaticHTML String Parsing Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability alarms

    Hi,
    I was wondering if someone else has noted an increase in false positives concerning the following 2 events:
    - Microsoft Internet Explorer toStaticHTML String Parsing Cross-Site Scripting  Vulnerability
    - Microsoft Office Excel Ghost Record Parsing Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerability
    Obvisouly I see these events because the signature has been introduced recently!!!
    But I wonder if these alarms I'm getting are genuine (and I have a big problem), or if the signature needs to be 'tuned' by Cisco to be a bit less sensitive?
    Anyone has experienced something similar or can shed a light?
    Thanks,
    seb.

    Hello Seb,
    Since I don't have the entire transmission, I can't tell what exactly is commented out in regard to the tags, but the data appears to look something like below.
    e){
      //v3.0..
      eval(targ+".location='"+selObj.options[selObj.selectedIndex].value+"'");
      if (restore) selObj.selectedIndex=0;
    //-->
    @td
    img{display: block;}
    @import url("p7tp/p7tp_01.css
    With 30419 being related to CVE-2010-3324, I assume the signature is firing due to some match variation of the fact that @import and the tags are showing up in a response from your web server. The toStaticHTML method should remove tags, but the vulnerability is causing that mechanism to fail.
    The oBot User-Agent caught my eye. Google returns several pages to the effect of oBot being a:
    "German spider from Cobion, now part of Internet Security Systems. Scans the web for their clients looking for copyright infringement."
    I'm not sure what benefit this search bot would receive from injecting Javascript into the response.
    I'll forward the capture data to our sig team to confirm whether this should be a legitimate match.

  • ICal keeps sending alarms for past events and won't let me delete items from calendar, I hit delete but the event just keeps multiplying on my calendar?

    iCal just started repeatedly sending me alarms a couple of days ago. I thought deleting the event from my calendar would help but it won't let me delete them, they just keep multiplying in my calendar. Help please

    Hello again,
    Well I seem to have overcome the problem, but not easily, and not by identifying the cause. I don't like that I don't know what caused the trouble. I make no guarantees, but this is what I did (on an iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8). Be sure to create backup copies of your files first:
    [Note: before you do any of this, you may want to try running Disk Utility program (found in Applications/Utilities/) and run the "Repair Permissions" option. See if that solves anything, but it didn't for me]
    a) I exported my iCal as an archive: Menu item, "File/Export/iCal Archive...". This won't likely do you any good, though, as something was wrong with it and I could not re-import it. But try anyhow.
    b) After backing them up, I deleted the folders and contents inside the Calendars folder: "Users/<your user name>/Library/Calendars/<subdirectories>". To create a backup, right-click on the Calendar folder and choose "compress Calendars" from the pop-up menu. Then drag the folder contents into the trash.
    c) After creating backup copies, delete (drag into the trash) these preferences files found in "Users/<your username>/Library/Preferences" (the slashes delimit the folder names):
      Users/<your username>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.plist
      Users/<your username>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.helper.plist
      Users/<your username>/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.iCal.helper.<some convoluted hex number>.plist
    d) Restart your computer;
    e) Launch iCal and reimport the individual calendar files you exported earlier.
    Hopefully all is well.
    Let me emphasize again that you will not likely succeed in reimporting the calendar archive. In the first place it likely contains corrupted data that caused your trouble in the first place. So you will need to import the individual calendars that have been exported. Be very certain to export these individually first.
    And if you want to make doubly certain, then copy and paste some of your important and key events into a TextEdit file and save that file in case you don't succeed.
    Perhaps you subscribed to some online calendar? If I recall correctly I had imported a calendar when the World Cup Soccer series was happening; I speculate that might have contributed to the issue. I wish I could have found exactly what caused the trouble. It may have been some older, less compatible format that was retained through a series of Mac OS updates.
    Good luck.

  • Automator Ical new events - Alarms type are wrong

    I've set an automator flow to create an event.
    Even with the "message only" alarm type (not" message with sound"), Ical created an event with a message with sound alarm.
    I've tried to uncheck the default alarm box in Ical and tried again, impossible to make it.
    Any idea ? thanks. It's really anoying, as when I sync with outlook at my office (through mobileme), if an alarm was set as message + sound in Ical, it results in no alarm at all in outlook 2007...

    I'm not sure if this is exactly the same, but DZ-Jay and I seem to have the same problem. I too have a number of email addresses on my Home Card in Address Book.
    When setting an iCal email alarm, it always selected the wrong address from that list and I had, every time, to change it through the pulldown list.
    Reading the above made me think (a rare event as my nearest and dearest will be quick to testify) and I realised that the address it selected was the one at the top of the list on My card in Address Book.
    Address Book also lists Work before Home email designated addresses which, DZ, is why it always sends to your "Work" email. Whilst in effect it does, it actually sends to the top address in the list which for you is a Work address.
    I changed the order so that the address I always wanted to use for iCal alarms was top of the list (I had to designate it as a Home address - fortunately it was then by chance alphabetically superior as well), closed Address Book - and lo and behold the "correct" address then appeared in my alarm setting.
    No reboot required, so in my case it looks as if iCal took the first address on My Card at the time an event or To Do item was added.
    That's enough brain work for a while - I'm off to a darkened room to have a lie down!

  • ICal scripting problem

    Hi everyone,
    I'm trying to write a brief .ics script to input my entire shift pattern into iCal and I'm making some headway although struggling with the last 5%.
    I work 6 on 4 off, 2 earlies, 2 lates, 2 nights then 4 days off. No problem, I've written 6 events, each that are repeated daily with a 10 day interval.
    The problem lays in the fact that the shifts that land on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, the time of the shift changes.
    Now it would be ideal if RRULE:FREQ=DAILY;BYDAY=MO,TU,WE,SU;INTERVAL=10 worked, that'd be great! Because I could just write a second event to place the events on the friday/sat/sun.
    So I've sort of abandoned that idea.
    So now I'm looking at placing a new event, repeating weekly, by day, and using the userID and editing a day. I.e if I set the UID of both early shifts as GPCJ-Early. Then I write an 'edit' script to run on Thurs,Fri,Sat and edit any GPCJ-Early to 07-1800 and so forth for the other shifts, that would also work.
    Am I missing something glaringly obvious and a better way of achieving this? I just need to place events that repeat every 10 days, except with different times if it's a thursday, friday or saturday.
    I'm testing it on phpicalendar 1.1 and I assume there must be some sort of syntax error (although it validates online) because iCal on my girlfriend's iMac says that the file is unusable. I'll cross that bridge later though!
    Appreciate any help you can offer, technical documentation on iCal programming seems incredibly sparse!
    Gareth

    iCal takes its format from System Preferences>Language& Text>Formats.
    Click on the 'Customize' button for 'Time' and set as here:
    Then drag the  'PM' button in the 'Time Elements' section to after the short time - though when I tried this it didn't appear in iCal. You may need to experiment a bit.

  • Can iCal send email alarms to someone other than self?

    I would like to have iCal send an email to someone other than myself via an alarm. Is that an option and if so, how is it done? Thanks in advance.

    If you have a ISP based email it can only be sent through Mail via your home ISP connection (or the same ISP elsewhere).
    If you use the ISP's web page email access then you can do it from any machine or on any ISP.
    Most people use a free web based email like GMail or Yahoo, then they can access through any computer with a web browser anywhere.
    I haven't used Mail in years.

  • ICal Script

    Does anyone know of a script to minimize iCal at start up. I want it to open when I turn my computer on but don't up on my screen when I turn it on. Just on in the dock. Also, how do you add birthdays on the birthday tab, it won't let me.

    In the Accounts pane of System Preferences, select iCal in the list of login items for your account and check the Hide box. If for some reason this doesn't work, open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and enter the following:
    tell application "iCal" to run
    delay 1--number may need to be adjusted
    tell application "System Events"
    set visible of process "iCal" to false
    end tell
    Save it as an application, and replace iCal with it in the list of login items.
