ICloud notes deleted; trouble restoring using Time Machine.

All of my notes got deleted via iCloud on both my Mac and iPhone. I tried using Time Machine in the Mail app but for each note it says "Message not cached" and when I try to restore them my Notes folder remains blank. Any suggestions?

Time Machine backs up the file 'as it is'. Its just like copying and pasting the file to an External HD and then dragging it back, would keep the file exactly the same.
The best way to find out, is to try it! This is what I did. Even though there was no need. Get a random photo from the Internet, add it to iPhoto - make sure TM has backed up. (Does it every hour), then delete it and go to TM and restore.
I tried it with a whole album, and restored it. It just came back. Fantastic.
So in answer to your question - Yes TM will bring it back as it was.
The only problem is TM only backs up every hour. You cant do it yourself. (I dont think). So if you were to change a file, save it and then undo or delete it - All within an hour. TM wouldn't have backed up the changes.
Hope this helps.

I entered Iphoto for my user and only photo up until 2012 were in the library.  I thought the restore would do the incremental Time Machine backups too.....

  • I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfully use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme?  Some forums say yes, some say no.

I am trying to get an answer to whether or not I can successfuly use Time Machine with an external HDD connected to an airport extreme.  Some forums say yes, some say no.  I'm also curious about formatting the hard drive to work both on my wife's MacBook Pro and my PC.  Any help would definitely be appreciated.

You may be going on a recollection, that I share, that at one time Apple stated this would be possible:
In fact, Apple’s Time Machine Web page touted this very capability as recently as last Tuesday, as you can see from Google’s October 16 cache of the page
Effortless meets wireless. With a hard disk connected to your AirPort Extreme Base Station, all the Macs in your house can use Time Machine to back up wirelessly. Simply select your AirPort Disk as the backup disk for each computer and the whole family can enjoy the benefits of Time Machine.
But if you look at the current Time Machine page on Apple’s Web site, that text is nowhere to be found.
That was a long time ago, it has never been officially implemented, and at present they specifically say it cannot be done.
In summary, it may work, but probably won't, and even if it does it may not be reliable.

  • Having trouble restoring from Time Machine

I replaced my HD, on my iMac 2007 Intel 20"' model A1441.  After formatting I tried to restore from Time Machine, but continue to receive error messages saying it can't restore the drive.  I went over to disk utilities & restored from there, but it renames my hard drive to "time Machine Backup" so I have two backup disks.  Is there a way to rename it?  Because all the data transfers over.  The whole thing is very frustrating!  My system was running on OS 10.8.5.

That's not how you restore from Time Machine. If you followed the instructions linked below and it didn't work, erase the volume and install OS X. When you restart, follow the prompts to transfer your data from a snapshot.

  • I have a LaCie external hard disk. I do not know how to retrieve photos from iphoto that have disappeared. I do not know how to use Time Machine

I have a LaCie external hard drive. I also have Time Machine. I somehow have "lost" almost all my 5,000+ photos from iPhoto 8.1.2. I would appreciate someone giving me directions on how to retrieve the photos from the external hard drive or Time Machine.
The last thing that I did that is different from my normal routine was to trash duplicate music tunes from iTunes. I cannot figure out how that would have caused my photos to disappear.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I remember being cautioned to never do anything with the iPhoto Library. Should I have clicked on the iPhoto Library and then Restore?
I do not know "how" items are being placed in the LaCie external drive, just that it shows a backup running about every hour. I have taken a snapshot of the Time Machine Preferences I would you to see. Maybe that would answer this question.
In March 2011 I had to have hard drive on my iMac replaced. I had been using a Seagate external drive for backups. However I was not using Time Machine. When the Apple guru was helping me restore all my files etc on the new hard drive he was not familiar with Seagate and recommended I purchase this LaCie and use Time Machine. I never had any problem retrieving items from the Seagate backup. It was very straightforward. As I mentioned previously, I just don't have a clue with the LaCie and Time Machine.
I hope this is not TMI.

  • If I restore using Time Machine, will I restore permissions also?

Here is the deal. We have a MacPro and I would like to use Time Machine to backup the computer, then wipe the hard drive and the restore only the software and media. What we DO NOT WANT is for any of the problems (like the permissions that are messed up) to be restored also. When  I say permissions I mean in our office  we have to hold shift to start up in safe mode, then restart, plus other stuff . I really don't want to get into all that. Please tell me if problems will be restored as well, after the use of Time Machine, cause that's what we want to avoid.
    Speak slowly and clearly please.
    MacPro Version 10.6.8
    2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    8 GB 1066 MHz DDR3
I'm not sure of the year (let me know if it matters in this case)

Is there anyway to avoid that.
    No.
How can I, "exclude from the backup?"
Apple menu > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options...
So using Time Machine, in my case, is a waste of time?
Not necessarily. You could restore from a snapshot taken before the damage was done. In that case, you lose all more recent changes to your files, but you could restore those selectively.
Also would upgrading to Mountain Lion solve this issue?
I'm not sure what the issue is, so I don't know.
Is the way to restore the OS to default, but leave all new media and new software in place?
Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) and select Reinstall OS X. Don't expect that action to solve any problem other than corrupt or missing system files, which are relatively rare.

  • Hard drive not appearing during restore from Time Machine?

While attempting to restore Time Machine from an external drive to my new MacBook Pro, the hard drive doesn't appear in the graphic.  A second external drive I have does appear, but not the Macintosh HD.  Suggestions?

    Howdy dlayne40,
If your hard drive is not showing in Time Machine, check it with Disk Utility.
OS X: If you can't back up or restore with Time Machine - Apple Support
    Check your Drives
Use Disk Utility to check your startup disk and any external drives you are using for backup.
Repair any issues and try again.

  • An old macbook running 10.6.8 was restored using Time Machine then Snow Leopard was reinstalled and updated to 10.6.8. Now the machine is slow and repair disc permissions results in a cancelled by user message.

Our old macbook was getting a gray screen with flashing ? on bootup. Eventually I restored it using Time Machine then decided to reinstall Snow Leopard since it would not boot. Machine now boots but is slow. Ran repair disc and tried to run repair disc permissions but got a message that it was cancelled by user.
This machine is at least 6 years old and I just want to limp it along until I can afford to replace it in the spring.

You may be smelling it because with the new OS the processor is having to work harder causing it to get hotter then it would with the other OS.  I can't say there is nothing wrong, but what could be happening is just that, it's getting hotter so the fan is spinning faster and moving more air so you are getting more of the smell then you would before.  I would still continue to back it up, and take it to the Apple Store at a Genius Bar and have them look at it to make sure.  Was the computer ever in a smoky environment??

  • Restore Using Time Machine

I just backed up my computer using time machine. My question is how do I do a full restore if my hard drive were to fail? Thanks!

Well, I did an Archive and Install then let Time Machine back up my computer. Then, when I did an Erase and Install there was an option to use a Time Machine backup to restore my computer back to what it was. After that, my computer was back to it's normal self.
So, if your hdd fails, when you put in a new one and install Leopard you should be given the option to restore using a backed up version through Time Machine. It'll then tell you that it is safe to plug in the external hdd and then you are good to go. For my 80gb hdd, it took aboutu 1.5-2h to install my backup.

  • Upgraded HD, not able to restore from Time Machine

My MBP came with Leopard installed, and a Snow Leopard upgrade DVD.  I have since upgraded to Lion through the App Store.  Yesterday I decided to upgrade my HD with the thought that I would use Time Machine to move my old system to the new hardware.  After using the Leopard recovery disc that came with my MBP 17" I wasn't able to use Time machine because of an OS compatibility issue.  There was a warning saying that the OS that I just installed was oldr and my ime Machine backup wouldn't work.
Will I have to pay for the Lion upgrade again to get the same computer to be compatible to the Time Machine backup that I have?

I upgraded the HD of the MBP.  Before taking out the old HD I ran Time machine one more time then removed the HD, replacing it with the new one.  I reinstalled Leopard from the OEM recovery disc that came with the computer on to the new HD, installed the updates for Leopard, and tried to use Time Machine to recover the setup that was on the old HD before I removed it - Lion, my applications, documents, etc.
Is there another way that I should be moving the system from the old drive to the new?

  • Mavericks install failed on my late 2008 MBP. Says I should contact the software provider. Want to do a system restore, using Time Machine, but latest date to use is from last year - even tho did a backup before the download?

I downloaded the free Mavericks upgrade to my late 2008 MBP on Friday.  I made sure to plug in my external hard drive so that Time Machine could back up beforehand.  (I should say I'm not clear about the different kinds of backups that Time Machine does - I just plug it in and let it go.).
So have tried several times over the weekend to install, it takes 46 minutes each time - only to tell me it can't do it.  There was an error message of needing to contact the software provider (or something similar).  After searching the internet (on my husband's computer - since my MBP is rendered useless right now) I decided maybe I should wait on Mavericks and just do a system restore.  However, when I plugged in the Hard Drive and proceed to System Restore, the latest date available is one from September of 2012 (14 months ago)...  I've wondered if the date might be wrong?  But I'm afraid to choose it because I'm not sure what I would lose.  It might take me back to Snow Leopard rather than Lion... (however, the version on Restore was 10.8.1 which is Mtn Lion, right?  Even tho it was last year...)
Some sources online say that I should go into applications and delete the install -- but I can't get to anything on my computer.
I tried to do a reboot in safe mode - but not sure if it worked...
I did look on the installer log error and the latest error is:
    Local Host  Report crash [378]
Can anyone help me?  (Using simpleton, non-techie language?

  • Unable to boot from a 'successful' restore using time machine.

My iBook took a dirt-nap and had to have serious repairs done by Apple. No problem, I have an external HD with my Time Machine back ups. However, when 'restoring from back up', I notice a few things; first, the only version that shows up is the original backup from two years ago. Second, after choosing that version to recover, I cannot boot. Running Verbose boot shows that the last thing happening is CSRHIDTransitionDriver getting a null.
So, it's obvious that my external HD time machine data is corrupt. Is there a way to get back my data with a corrupted time-machine back up? I can see all of the back ups in there. I have run disk utilities and verified both the mac disk and external HD and ran repair disk permissions after my recovery and still no luck.

Well, you don't know that the TM backup drive is corrupt. You may just have done the wrong type of restore. Not to worry at this point.
Boot from your Leopard installer DVD and perform an Erase and Install. Once you have a working system installed you can restore your data from the TM backup drive using Migration Assistant. Be sure that you use a different username for the initial account in Setup Assistant. That way you can migrate your old Home folder without changing the username. Once you migrate your old Home folder you can log into it and delete the account created in the Setup Assistant.

  • Retrieving Mountain Lion after a restoration using Time Machine

    Hello,
I've a little issue I would like to submit to all wise mac users...
I restored my mbp, delivered with Mountain Lion, using a Time machine save but it ended up replacing it with Lion (Which I was using when I did the save). Is there any solution to get Mountain Lion back or do I have to purchase it from App store ?
Thanks a lot to whoever has an answer, and sorry if my english is not so good (French... ).
Oh and btw, I searched before asking and didn't find anything, but if I missed the answer I'd be glad to be pointed to it.

Boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • Restored Using time machine, now I have no check boxes.

So my hard drive deceided to stop working not too long ago, so I got a new one and booted from a time machine back up. After the restore, oddly enough, I do not see check boxes anywhere. Whether it is on a website, or on a system preference page, if there is an option with a check box next to it, it does not appear for me. However, I can still select these checkboxes (assuming of course that I am in the right spot while clicking at essentially nothing).  In addition to this craziness, if I click on my volume option in the toolbar on the top, I see an empty box where the volume selection meter used to be. I can still change the volume by clicking somewhere in the empty rectangle, but the problem is that I do not see anything. Not only that, but I also noticed that my keyboard will no longer allow me to adjust the volume or the brightness.
One other weird thing is that everytime I try to do a new back up in time machine, it lags out and fails. So there is a lot of weirdness happening, and all of this happened after I restored. I tried marking this post as a question, but I'm not sure if that was successful (you have click on a checkbox for that). Please help.

You posted your question in the OS 9 & below forum, so you won't get an answer here. You need to repost in the Snow Leopard OS 10.6 forum at https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.6_snow_leopard
