Idle laptop & physical memory is at 41%?!?!? Is that normal?

I just ordered a dm4t about a month ago and it works fine and I'm not having any problems with it.  I don't use it for anything major, mostly just Word starter, email/browsing, photoediting, skype, schoolwork, etc.
I opened up my task manager and it says I'm using anywhere from 38%-41% of physical memory. This is with NO PROGRAMS or window apps open.
I was just wondering why it's so high.  Maybe it's not, but that seems like alot of processes (about 87) and memory are being used when I'm not even doing anything.  I haven't completely deleted all of the crapware that came pre-installed on it so maybe that's part of the problem?  Should I even really be worried about it anyway?
I have dm4t with an Intel i5M540-2.53GHz, 4GB RAM, and 64-bit OS.
(My Windows Rating is 3.9 b/c of the graphics, but I really don't do the gaming stuff so not really concerned about that)
I don't know much about computers, other than they're supposed to work!
Any feedback is MUCH appreceiated!  Cheers!

Yes, its normal, W7 is a far larger OS than XP was, also if you look in task manager performance tab (bottom text, not the graph) it will show even more memory is in use, the difference here is it also includes reserved memory which it used to make things faster, it will release this reserved memory if it is needed.

  • Running out of Physical Memory "Mavericks"

    Greetings,
    Just moved to 10.9 (upgrade) not a fresh install from 10.8.5.
    My issue is with Physical Memery being really scarce under Mavericks.
    I have a MacBook Air Mid 2012 core i7 with 8G of rams. I would think that is sufficient especially with the way I use my system. Mainly production and nothing heavy like virtualisation or video rendering etc....
    This is what I have done to try to paliate to the issue:
    Cleaned all Caches in the system
         ~/Library/Caches
           /Library/Caches
          /System/Library/Caches
          /var/root/Library/Caches
    The system (Mavericks) is still quickly running out of physical memory.
    I have notice that in Activity Monitor the "File Cache" is getting really big really quickly. I have also notice that as the "File Cache" is growing, Physicall Memory is shrinking (something to that effect).
    What is "File Cache" in Mavericks ?
    How can I make sure that the said "File Cache" is not growing too big. I am assuming it needs to grow somewhat since it is there to make the system run faster (again something to that effect).
    Any help is much appreciated as this is a production machine and I cannot every 5 minutes run "purge" from the terminal. I am even thinking about upgrading my hardware to a 16G unit
    Below is a screen shot of my unit's "Activity Monitor" showing the condition of may ram.
    One thing that is weird: I never see any "swapping" done after the upgrade to Mavericks.
    I checked into /var/vm and found swap files.
    Can I assume that my system is doing swap eventhough "Activity Monitor" is not reporting any ?
    Is there any other way to check if "swap" is working ?
    Kind Regards,

  • Physical memory cache behavior in Windows Server 2008 Enterprise

    I have a question regarding how windows manages the cache portion of phyiscal memory.  I have 2 servers which are identical OS configurations, hardware and experience nearly identical workloads.  Server 1 appears to use its cache a lot. I often
    see physical cache at at 75% of total memory (total is 16gb for both servers). I also see that the cache stays this high
    even when overall memory utilization is minimal (say approx. 3-4gb out of 16gb for long durations). I suppose this means windows memory manager is keeping pages in the cache because it anticipates it may need them again, but would overwrite them with
    new data if new processes needed it (I think of  this cached memory when the system is near idle as "available" but correct me if I am wrong?)
    Server 2 (again same workload and identical hardware, OS, configuration) doesn't appear to use cache as much. In fact, cache is always low round the clock (2 gbs usually) even when there is little to no memory utilization from processes outside the OS. Basically,
    it is low when the server is near idle, while the server 2 keeps it very high during the same period of minimal workload. Why the difference? Does this behavior sound normal?  Please advise. I am not a Windows Admin btw. I have a rudimentary understanding
    of memory.. or so I believe at least : )
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Although both server are identical OS configurations, hardware and experience nearly identical workloads, there are still differences between them. We can use task manager on both server and Check which processes are using physical memory, please go through

  • HP Pavilion dv6 Vista Recovery - Physical memory dump w/ error code 0x000000F4 (and others)

    Hello Everyone,
    This is my first time posting in the forums so I hope that I have chosen the appropriate area and will do my best to be brief but informative.
    Computer: HP Pavilion dv6000
    Operating System: Windows Vista.
    For the past 6-8 months it has been unable to perform Windows Update citing that the most likely reason was a virus. I have tried numerous trouble shooting options when it was recommended that I perform a chkdsk. After initiating a chkdsk in Command Prompt, my computer restarted and had a black screen with no cursor. After watching this for 2 hours and realizing that none of the usual chkdsk progress or text was coming up I made the decision to force shut down.
    When I rebooted, I was told to enter system recovery which I did and completed a system recovery from the hard drive. After the system recovery finished and the laptop restarted, I experience a Blue Screen of Death due to a physical memory dump. The error codes are STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x0000000000000003, 0xFFFFFA8006671040, 0xFFFFFA8006671278, 0xFFFFF80001D01DA0).
    I am not able to boot in safe mode. In the start up repair, I am able to enter command prompt from which I started chkdsk again. Both chkdsk f/ and chkdsk r/ passed with no errors. Additionally, the computer passed both UEFI Hard Drive and Memory tests. I have system recovery CDs for the computer but they fail at 78% completion.
    Please let me know if you have any questions or require anymore information. I would appreciate any and all advice!
    Thank you!

  • DV6500 Physical Memory Limitation to 3gb

    Hi All,
    My DV6500 Entertainment PC came with Windows Vista 32-bit preinstalled which limited my usable memory from 4gb to 3gb. I recently upgraded to Windows Home Premium 32-bit which I believe has a physical memory limitation of 4gb (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366778%28v=vs.85%29.aspx#physical_memory_l... but upon inspection my windows still shows 3gb usable memory. Is there something I need to tweek in windows or bios to fully use all 4gb as installed on my laptop? Thanks in advance.
    This question was solved.

    Hi:
    That's what this forum is for...asking and answering questions.
    So there is absolutely nothing for you to be sorry for.
    Unfortunately, there is no way you can re-map or re-dedicate the memory configuration. It is what it is.
    However, your PC's BIOS may have a setting to allow for more dedicated graphics memory to be used.
    I was very surprised to see that in my dv6810us BIOS, there is a video memory setting. The default is 64 MB.  However, I could change the setting to 128 MB or 32 MB.
    So, I changed it to 128 MB.

  • Beginning Dump of Physical Memory When Connecting iPhone

    Hi everyone. I just moved to a new laptop and installed iTunes 7.5. When I initially connect my iPhone to the new laptop it pops up in the task manager that a new digital camera is found and begins the install process. About 15 seconds later the computer blue screens and throws up the "Beginning Dump of Physical Memory" error. This happens every time.
    I've not tried to plug in my iPod yet so I don't know if that will do it as well but I really want my iPhone working on the new computer. It worked great on my old laptop.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    If you have a logitech device on your machine, then this might be the cause. If so, do a search on this site to look for the fix.

  • Physical memory dump error on my A60-155

    I have got a Satellite A60 and recently when just turning on the computer after a week period of not using it, it gave a 'physical memory dump' and then asked if I want to start in safe mode or last known working settings or start windows normally. None of these options worked, all the computer did was dumping its memory. So I tried the recovery disc, it loaded all the required things but yet again it did a memory dump on load up.
    So I formatted the laptop and tried a newer copy of windows XP on it (Both home and Professional) doing this did work (By that I mean it installed) and windows loaded as it should, I loaded the sound drivers and all the rest of the needed drivers, restarting the computer every time I installed a new device but when it came to the 'ATI Radeon Mobility 7000 IGP' driver as soon as it restarted it dumped the memory.
    As soon as the ATI driver is installed the system will not load, but the new windows I have installed does let me start on last worked settings (This removes the graphics driver) So I went onto this Toshiba website and got the driver from here seeing as ATI doesn't provide the drivers for its merchandise, and yet again it resulted in the system not loading. I need to have the graphics working because without it I cant watch films or use my CAD software I need it working.
    PLEASE HELP!!

    Hello
    Please try to use these settings shown on this page http://www.barrett.net/xpmemorydump.html .
    By the way the graphic card should be installed at the beginning. After OS installation first that should be installed is the chipset driver and than graphic card driver. After that you can continue with all other drivers.
    Bye

  • Check installed memory with physical memory

    I need to check whether Physical memory is same as installed memory of multiple servers.
    By using win32_computerSystem command, i can get the physical memory, but how do i get the installed memory using powershell?

    I've tested the functions myself and modified your functions like this so it works
    function CheckPhysicalRam($Server)
    $PhysicalRAM = (Get-WMIObject -class Win32_PhysicalMemory -ComputerName $Server |Measure-Object -Property capacity -Sum | % {[Math]::Round(($_.sum / 1GB),2)})
    return $PhysicalRAM
    function CheckInstalledRam($Server) {
    $InstalledRAM = Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_ComputerSystem -ComputerName $Server
    $InstalledRAM = [Math]::Round(($InstalledRAM.TotalPhysicalMemory/ 1GB))
    return $InstalledRam
    function CheckRam($Server) {
    $InstalledRAM = CheckInstalledRam($Server)
    $PhysicalRAM = CheckPhysicalRam($Server)
    if ($PhysicalRAM -eq $InstalledRAM)
    return "pass"
    Else
    return "fail"
    Can you see if this is the thing you want ?
    Tested it with my test win7 laptop and other win7 devices in my domain.
    for my win7 32bit with 8GB physical and 3.41 available it says fail
    for other win7 64bit devices with 8GB physical and 7.xx availble it passes.
    You can also do it in one function, like this:
    function CheckRam($Server) {
    $PhysicalRAM = (Get-WMIObject -class Win32_PhysicalMemory -ComputerName $Server |Measure-Object -Property capacity -Sum | % {[Math]::Round(($_.sum / 1GB),2)})
    $InstalledRAM = Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_ComputerSystem -ComputerName $Server
    $InstalledRAM = [Math]::Round(($InstalledRAM.TotalPhysicalMemory/ 1GB))
    if ($PhysicalRAM -eq $InstalledRAM)
    return "pass"
    Else
    return "fail"

  • 4GB Physical Memory but 3.67GB Used

    Hey there, I'm not so great with computers, I essentially know the basics, and thought might as well post a question about it and see where that takes me. I appreciate the help! Thanks in advance!
    I have a 13-inch Macbook pro (Mid 2012) with 4GB memory. I was browsing around and discovered a table in the activity monitor stating the following;
    - Physical Memory: 4.00GB
    - Memory Used: 3.75GB
    - Virtual Memory: 4.51GB
    - Swap Use: 35.3 MB
    From reading other questions and the responses to them I have realized that Maverick takes up a lot of memory but I'm not quite sure why my swap used isn't zero. I don't have much on this Macbook and have bought it recently. Why is the Swap use not zero? Is it a bad thing that it's 35.3MB?
    The reason I was looking around was to figure out if my Macbook would be good to run downloaded games and such on; this is a shared laptop and that's what my brothers are interested in doing for the most part. Yes, we have a huge age gap.
    Much appreciated,
    Simran

    Swap is always used. No big deal. What is a big deal is PageOuts.
    About OS X Memory Management and Usage
    Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
    OS X Mavericks- About Activity Monitor
    Memory Management in Mac OS X
    Understanding top output in the Terminal
    The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
    Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Physical memory and paging

    I know in SAP's world, memory means physical memory + paging. I want to know which program has contribution for swap.
    Suppose there is 4G physical memory on an application server, em/initial_size_MB = 4G, abap/heap_area_nondia = 4G.
    1) If there is no dialog processor running and one background job running which claims 2G memory, I want to know will swap occur?
    2) If there is one dialog processor running which claims 2G memory and one background job running which claims 2G memory, will swap occur?

    By ST03N you can check the workload, by OS06 the swap .
    By transaction ST02 you can check the folllowing parameters:
    SAP Roll area parameters
    - ztta/roll_first          : First amount of roll area used in a dialog WP
    - ztta/roll_area             : size of the local SAP Roll area in the work process
    rdisp/ROLL_SHM      : size of SAP roll Buffer
    rdisp/ROLL_MAXFS     : size of entire shared SAP roll area
    SAP Extended Memory main parameters :
    em/initial_size_MB : size of SAP extended memory allocated when                         the SAP instance starts up
    em/blocksize_KB  : size block which split SAP Extended Memory
    ztta/roll_extension : maximum size of a user context in the SAP Extended memory
    SAP Heap Memory main parameters :
    abap/heap_area_dia       : quotas oh SAP heap memory that a dialog                                 process can allocated.
    abap/heap_area_nondia : quotas oh SAP heap memory that a nondialog                    process can allocated.
    abap/heap_area_total     : size that can be allocated in total by all work                    process.
    abap/heaplimit           : Workprocess restart limit of heap memory
    if helpful reward point is appreciated

  • Physical Memory Upgrade [SAP, Oracle parameter changes]

    Hello Guru,
    Good day!
    I'm not sure if I'm in the correct forum, please bare with me if I'm not.
    We are actually planning to increase our Production [Physical Memory] server from its current size 15360GB including [oracle, SAP & OS] to 44GB memory.  Do you have any idea how can we calculate to the most needed SAP / DB parameter should be increase after we allocate the 44GB in preparation for Go-Live.  Below are details of my systems [oracle version, kernel, R/3 System, OS version, SAP parameter and DB parameter.

    I feel the best way to get the parameters which needs to be adjusted is to go for EarlyWatch Check after increasing the Physical Memory of your SAP system, as we cannot say how and which parameters needs to be checked and changed.. as there is some dependiblity also between the parameters...
    All the best !

  • IPOD causes "Blue Screen of Death" with physical memory dump

    Plugged in the IPOD into USB port on computer. It shows "found USB device" and then 5-10 seconds later I get the blue screen of death and a notification that there is a driver error and a physical memory dump as occurred.
    Spent two hours with Apple people and Dell people this morning and nothing. I have updated drivers, flashed my bios, uninstalled and then reinstalled the latest version of Itunes.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
    if the blue screen mentions a specific file, let us know what that is called too. (exact spelling, please.)
    here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
    if you're just seeing a flash of a blue screen, we can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.

  • How to get the amount of free physical memory?

    How to get the amount of free physical memory?
    (without sudo or root)

    vmstat will give it to you.
    Although the question depends a bit on what you mean by free memory.
    The figure vmstat labels free (in any reasonably recent version of solaris) actually represents memory mostly filled with cached file contents. So it represents memory that can be easily released if needed by something more important.
    Like most unix versions, solaris will use any free memory to cache files thats have been read/written previously just in case they are needed again

  • How to make use of the spare physical memory under buffered I/O of Essbase

    We encountered an issue of the physical memory allocation of the server running Essbase with buffered I/O mode. We have implemented some cache setting in Essbase but still found that the disk I/O is quite high. Also we observed that Windows 2003 server cannot make use of the spare physical memory available as the system cache for database files of Essbase.
    As allocating more memory as Essbase cache might not help, we would like to know other than changing to direct I/O mode, any other options can improve the disk I/O performance?
    Thanks!

    Hi Hyperion_User,
    1. Disk IO performance,It mighe depend on quite a few things , one of the aspects might be your storage system. It can depend on the disk configuration too ( i.e if your disk is SAN or NAS, then it depends on the configuration like Raid ..etc).
    2. It depends on the HBA ( host bus adapter).
    3. Let me try to explain with diagram.
    http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/uploadfile/freebookarticles/apress/2008dec16010208am/DataStorageDesign/Images/159059214X-1404.1.gif
    4. It might depend on the HBA and even on the switch speed.
    5. Buffered IO is a very generic setting,which most of them use( that should not be an issue).
    6. Even if you have 30 to 40 GB free memory, every application in essbase has a limitation to it maximum usage ( 2 GB on windows ). Refer to DBAG for more information on this .

    Thanks for your detailed advice. I just wonder if more physical memory can help to improve the disk I/O being used for concurrent read/write access. We are using Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition and not sure whether some spare physical memory can be used for this purpose.
    Thanks again!

  • Physical Memory limitation

    I have an HP dv6448se that originally came with Vista x86
    I have recently upgraded the OS to Win7 x64
    The listed memory limitation of the laptop is 2048 (2GB)
    What is it that limits the ram to 2GB?  Is it a hardware thing, or was it an OS thing?  Would the new OS recognize two 2GB chips, or am I stuck with two 1GB chips?
