IDML to PDF

In exporting a file to IDML, does something change/ gets lost in traslation from the original indesign file? Like missing words, reformatted texts etc? I work with a client who has CS6 (I have 5.5) hence we agreed that every time he updates our files to save it in IDML so I can access them as well. But now he claims that after exporting to PDF (after the IDML), some stuff didn't reflect in the PDFs. Is that possible?

@Janine
What can occur (it occured to me): an applied paragraph style was changed to a different one.
Basing a roundtrip workflow through IDML is really a bad idea…
Joel is right calling it outright "dangerous".
Ah, just another one, I have to admit, a very obscure one:
Whole tables will be lost, if they exceed 200 columns (not so with CS4).
It's unlikely you ever will work with those, but… ;-)

  • How to convert idml to pdf in java through SOAP?

    Hi All,
    I am very new to INDD Server SDK. My question can be very basic.Sorry for that in advance.  What I need to do is sending an idml file to InDesign CS6 Server and get a PDF back in java. This is required to enable translators translating idml format to preview the translated idml. Is this possible? Are there some code samples about how to do it?
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi ,
    Thanks for your response. Can I convert an IDML file which is located on my local pc, not in server, to pdf or jpeg using server sdk? I have had a look at "Getting Started guide", but still not very clear about how to attain this. How can I create a Document object from local IDML file, for example? Should file exist on INDD Server side?
    Your help is very much appreciated.

  • Enhanced package with IDML and PDF

    Question: Can we set preferences so that the press ready pdf auto generated during packaging creates a pdf that includes bleeds or other pdf attributes?

    Create a PDF preset for it.

  • Feature Request: View exported PDF when packaging

    Part of my workflow on job completion / sign-off is to package my InDesign document [File > Package]
    I use this feature to ensure I have fonts, links, IDML and Print-ready PDF for archiving purposes and saw that CC greatly improved the packaging feature by adding IDML and PDF options. What I would like to suggest/see is that the PDF option comes with a "View PDF File" when packaging to ensure it has saved correctly / without error. (Indesigns uses the last settings to determine bleed etc. irrelevant to which preset you have selected). It would just save a few more nav clicks along the way.

    There are a couple of ways you can view the mp3 path. (1) Right click on the track, and select "Show Song File." (2) Right click on the track, select "Get Info" and look on the Summary tab.

  • Trying to open a file from an older version to a new version of indesign

    I'm on am mac and i am trying to open a file from the 2014 indesign with 2015 software, i am getting this error:
    what i don't understand is why a newer version can't read the file of an older version

    That is exactly the opposition of what you are trying to tell us.
    Correct is:
    You have Adobe CS6, version 8.x.
    You get a file from someone else, who has Adobe CC 2014, version 10.x.
    You are trying to open that file on your computer.
    But because that file was created in a later version, you get this message.
    Either ask to get an IDML file (with a PDF), tell them, they should go to File > Package… and check IDML and PDF export.
    Better would be, if you also subscribe to the Creative Cloud to be up to date with the latest version.
    But what you should do anyway, update your InDesign CS6, as there are updates available which will correct this error message, as from CS7 upwards no CS exists anymore.

  • What's new in the CS5.5 SDK?

    OK, well, not a whole lot. But since I went through and diffed it against CS5, I though I'd share. This is from the Mac perspective.

    Blah.

    I wonder if Adobe has looked at how popular the use of plugins is.
    It would be interesting to know.
    Beyond surveys and market information, at least on the Mac, they have
    crash report data (which is skewed!). Each crash report includes
    information about version of each loaded plugin. So while they
    may not be able to measure the absolute number of users with plugins
    installed, they can measure the fraction of users-who-submit-crash-reports
    who have plugins installed, as well as the that fraction for any particular
    plugin.
    Of course, one can only assume those numbers would be representative
    of non-crashing installations, too. At least theoreticaly, most crashes
    should be clear about whether a plugin was directly or indirectly
    responsible for the crash...
    I guess such things have the danger of running afoul of the privacy
    policy...

  • InDesign CC Server 2014 app.open() File does not exist.

    I've set up InDesign CC Server 2014 trial on a Windows Server 2008 R2 and trying to run a simple script that converts a idml to PDF.
    Here's the code
    document = app.open(File("C:\inetpub\wwwroot\presentation\Documents\Resumes.idml"));
    document.exportFile(ExportFormat.PDF_TYPE, File ("C:\inetpub\wwwroot\presentation\Documents\file.pdf"));
    document.close();
    I'm running the script in ExtendScript Toolkit CC and it gets hung up every time on the first line, open() method.
    I've verified the path and permissions are fine as other scripts work that write output, such as this one.
    //HelloWorld.jsx
    //Create a new document.
    var myDocument = app.documents.add();
    //Get a reference to the first page.
    var myPage = myDocument.pages.item(0);
    //Create a text frame.
    var myTextFrame = myPage.textFrames.add();
    //Specify the size and shape of the text frame.
    myTextFrame.geometricBounds = ["6p0", "6p0", "18p0", "18p0"];
    //Enter text in the text frame.
    myTextFrame.contents = "Hello World!";
    //Save the document (fill in a valid file path).
    myDocument.save(new File("/c/HelloWorld.indd"));
    //Close the document.
    app.documents.item(0).close();
    No problems at all with that script.
    Please help!

    Figured it out. Path for app.open() needs \\ instead of \.

  • InDesign CC requirements & porting guide

    Hi all,
    I'm looking for the ID CC requirements and porting guide (and others...).
    The ./docs/guides PDF folder in sdk (Build 244) just contains "IDML Specification.pdf".
    Which Mac/Win versions ?
    Which XCode/Visual versions ?
    How to convert a CS6 project to CC ?
    Where are usual docs ?
    For now, I just try to compile BasicMenu sample in xcode 3.2.5, and I have :
    ProcessPCH++ [...]
    error: unrecognized command line option "-Wno-logical-op-parentheses"
    error: unrecognized command line option "-Wno-c++11-extensions"
    error: unrecognized command line option "-Wno-return-stack-address"
    error: unrecognized command line option "-Wno-parentheses-equality"
    error: unrecognized command line option "-Wno-out-of-line-declaration"
    error: unrecognized command line option "-Wno-return-type-c-linkage"
    error: unrecognized command line option "-Wno-invalid-source-encoding"
    error: unrecognized command line option "-Wno-#pragma-messages"
    So I'd like to know if xcode 4.2 or more is needed.
    Thx.

    Here are the SDK requirements:
    IDE:
    Xcode 4.5.2
    Visual Studio 2010 SP1
    OS:
    OS X 10.6 or later
    Windows 7 or later
    The docs you are looking for are in the final, released, SDK which you can request access to from here: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/indesign.html.
    They are no included in the SDK you currently have since that was a pre-release build which didn't have final documentation PDFs included.

  • What causes blank pages appearing suddenly in an autoflowed-text document?

    CS5.5, english version.
    The complete book was built-up and all master pages were applied . When reopening the file, several blank pages appeared at two places in the document. The text flow was not interrupted, but seamed «hidden» under a non-existing white layer. The software showed «Master page applied», but the pages were blank, imposible to select any object or to place a new text frame. It was also impossible to reapply the master page (the pages were still blank after). We could not access the hidden part of text, even if it was obviously still present, and we had no choice but rebuild a new document.
    We don't know what caused this very disturbing bug, and we would avoid it to reappear again! If someone knows a trick, you're welcome!

    I'm afraid I don't have any good news for you, though I was able to get the text to reappear by deleting the blank pages and inserting new ones, then rethreading. Youy could do this, but I suspect it is a short-term fix that won't last a day and more important, that output will fail.
    ID seems to think the frames on the blank pages are lines with astronomically long lengths and they seem to be sheared as well. Needless to say that seems to be some sort of corruption in the file. The reason that I don't have good news is that I've been completely unable to export anything useful for repair out of the file and reimport it-- neither .idml or tagged text. In all cases I get an error message that the  either the file does not exist, it is in use or I don't have permission. I know the files exist -- I can open the text file in a text editor, and I can see the components of the .idml file if I change the extension to .zip, but I can't convince any version of ID to access either of them.
    I looked through the file history and noticed that this file began life as a CS4 file that was converted to CS5.5 in August of 2011. I think that's the source of the problem. From time to time we get reports of unexplainable glitches or files that will not output, or just refuse to open at some point, even though they were fine hours earlier, and quite often it turns out that these are legacy files that were directly updated in a newer version. Because of this I now recommend that all legacy files that are to be converted be exported to .inx or .idml from the original version, then that exported file should be opened in the new version.
    Actually I had one more thought, and it seems to have been at least partly successful. As I mentioned, I was able to export the main story to InDesign Tagged Text and open that in a text editor (Notepad in this case, since I'm on PC). I tried saving the file from notepad with a new name and lo and behold I can now import it into a new file or use it to replace the text in the original. I tried the replacement, and exporting another .idml. but that still fails to reopen, so the corruption is not in the text of the main story. A .idml file export from a new .indd with the resaved tagged text placed in it also is working.
    This means you actually have a good shot at rebuilding this file fairly quickly. Export the stories to tagged text, open those in a plain text editor of your choice and resave as plain text, then place them into a new document with the same page dimensions and margins (rebuild the master pages from scratch in the new file). Make a backup copy of the file with just the text, and make sure it is working properly and that you can export to .idml and PDF, then add the images and check again. I think this is going to work, though it may take a few hours.
    DON'T overwrite any of the files you have already -- use new names, and do a save As a the end of each session or at any major change point adding a version number to the name so you have a good backup version chain in case something goes wrong again. Good luck.

  • Exporting a jpeg in background thread: ID CS5

    Hi All,
    I am working on a plugin for CS5 and CS5.5, My plugin requirement is that it should export a document to pdf and jpeg format on background thread, On looking into CHM I found that there is a article "Asynchronous exports, Multithreading" which says that only IDML and pdf  are the two formats that can be export in background thread.
    Is is possible eto export a document in JPEG format on bakground thread? if yes then should I need to follow aproach mentioned in chm article "Asynchronous exports, Multithreading" or there is some other way to do it.
    Please help me to find out a way using which I can achieve this.
    Thanks
    Alam

    topfuelmaniac,
    I believe the issue will be solved if both the artwork and the Artboard are aligned with the pixel grid.
    The Transform Palette has the option Align to  Pixel Grid.
    The artwork may be off, and if so, it is better to align it properly than to snip off parts to fit the size it should have from the start.
    If you have portions of the artwork, such as parts of strokes, outside the Bounding Box, you may have to rethink. You can turn on Use Preview Bounds in the preferences to see the real size to be exported.

  • 9.2 won't install on my computer - doesn't apply it says.  How can I open files that need this install?

    But when I try to install - I get this error...

    Someone with InDesign 10 CC 2014 might export it to a IDML (down saving is not possible). But expect loss of content based on new features or other changes in the document. Tell your colleague he or she should package the file and include IDML and PDF. IDML for you to work on and a PDF to compare changes which might happen on your computer. In the package dialogue is now an option (or 2) to include these file types.

  • Opening InDesign CS7 (CC) files in CS6 after opting out of CreativeCloud

    Hi, I have opted out of Creative Cloud and decided to use just CS6 instead. Now a couple of files where created in newer versions (
    as I had automatic upgrade in CC) which to my horror I cannot open now. Is there a way to open them without having to reactivate CC? Thanks for your help.

    @blauraum – if you doing the export (in CC it's saving) to IDML, don't forget to export to PDF as well. Afterwards you could place the PDFs in the opened IDML (now indd file) to compare the conversion to the "original". Expect some changes…
    For batch converting to IDML and PDF there is a script by Peter Kahrel:
    Peter Kahrel
    Batch-process (convert/export) documents (CS3 and later)
    http://www.kahrel.plus.com/indesign/batch_convert.html
    If delivering "open" files to someone else, there should always be a "triad" of files:
    *.indd
    *.idml
    *.pdf
    *.indd for the people who work with the same version of InDesign.
    *.idml for the people with older (CS4 and above) or newer versions.
    *.pdf for all participants to show how the pages should be looking (no missing fonts, no missing images, no missing or different rendered features)

  • Will Adobe indesign cs6 books work with the adobe indesign creative cloud version?

    Will Adobe indesign cs6 books work with the adobe indesign creative cloud version?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I think, this question is a very good one.
    If I have a *.indb document created in CS6, populated with InDesign documents from CS6, what to do, if I want to migrate my workflow to the latest version of InDesign CC-2014?
    Short answer (avoiding trouble and headaches):
    1. Convert all your InDesign documents from CS6 to CC-2014 (*)
    2. Use NEW document file names for all your CC-2014 InDesign file types: *indd, *indt, *indl
    3. Build your *indb documents for CC-2014 anew.
    4. Use NEW document file names for CC-2014 InDesign file type: *indb
    But isn't that a tedious task to do?
    Yes. But fortunately there are some scripts around helping you with the conversion process.
    See Peter Kahrel's website. Especially:
    Free script Batch convert/export InDesign documents | Peter Kahrel
    There are others as well…
    Uwe
    *Before migration of the workflow batch export all InDesign CS6 documents to IDML and PDF.

  • How to open InDesign CC files in CS6?

    I am trying to take files from a flash drive for Indesign CS6, his version is CC9.0 mine is cc 8.0.2 is there anything I can do to make it open in my version?
    Thanks,

    If you are a cloud subscrber, why are you not upgrading to CC 2014?
    If you can't upgrade, you have to export it from the newer version as IDML file and open this in the older version and save it as INDD. Best practice from CC214 would be to make a package and include IDML and PDF. But expect changes in the IDML workflow, it is not intended to use in workflow forward and backward between different versions.
