If LaserWriter 12/640 PS set-up to print via a TIGER Mac...

Just wondering if this less than ideal solution may work:
If I set-up my LaserWriter 12/640 PS printer via my eMac running TIGER 10.4.11 then enable SHARING - can I print to this printer via Snow Leopard?
WHAT IF THE eMac is turned-off? Will it still work?? (Likely not...)
Any comments on how to use a LaserWriter 12/640 PS with Snow Leopard appreciated.
Thanks!

Hello, Stephen: I have this exact same problem, same printer, too. I have been using it via AppleTalk, ethernet and an Asante Talk device. I haven't switched my Intel iMac to Snow Leopard yet because of this problem. I have an older Mac G3 B&W tower running Tiger so I guess I have figure out how to share the printer with the old Mac. It doesn't have Airport but I have an old "Snow" Airport base station. The old computer most likely would have to be turned on for all the components to work. I'll let you know if I can get it working and HOW.

  • How to set up Canon printer via Netgear print server ps121 on new macbook

I have bought a new Macbook (OS10.4.8). The Apple store gives a good deal if you buy a Canon ip4300 with it but I am having problems figuring out how to set up the printer to work thru my Netgear print server on my Netgear network. Can anybody advise:
    1. I know my print server is on port 192.168.1.5, but what kind of settings do I use, IPP or LPT or something else?
    2. Why can I not find the driver for the ip4300, even though I have used the CD that came with the printer and run the install program and the printer DOES work when I plug it directly into the USB port. Why does the Macbook come with drivers already installed for only a few ancient BJ Canons and why won't it show me where the driver for the ip4300 is since it is obviously already on the machine?
I know Netgear treats its customers with contempt (Linksys even worse). But I would expect a little more simplicity from Canon and Apple. I know I am an orangutan but it still seems incredibly difficult, as if they have hidden the printer driver on the computer and as if Apple does not want you to install networked printers. Please don't tell me to RTFM, I have read the Canon manual, it tells you how to network with Windows, does not even mention Mac. Any advice appreciated.

    Hi zoevancouver,
If you are not able to set up your Canon MP460 printer, take a look at the article below.  There is a link to the Canon website and compatible printers.  Since this particular model is not on the list, you may need to contact Canon for additional support.

  • Setting up a printer on a Windows Mac Network

I have a small XP and MAC OSX network and have one shared (via Print Server) Epson printer, When I try to configure the Epson from the MAC I get all sorts of problems, so gave up. I have now configured the Printer as SHARED on one of the XP PC's and am trying to ad this printer via the Sys Prefs Printer & Fax utility, If I select Windows - Workgroup - target pc with the shared printer set up.....I get an error Connection Failed ....... which is very odd as the same PC has Shared Folders already mounted on the same MAC, that I am trying to add the printer.
    Any Ideas please?
    Thanks
    John

If it is connected to the main router in the house, is it connected to the network?
Yes but on a different subnet.
...if my MacBook is already on the network, how would i set up the printer?
Configure the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to operate in bridge mode. This will put the MacBook on the same subnet as everything else.

  • Setting up appletalk printer in OSX Tiger

I'm trying to set up on old HP Laserjet 4MP through an Asante appletalk bridge through to the ethernet port on my old G4 (which is running Tiger). Everyone says to turn appletalk on which it is but I still can't seem to be able to see the printer through the Printer setup. What protocol do I go through and how do I find it's address?
I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to setting up printers so anyone please feel free to teach me how to suck eggs
    G5 1.6MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   3.0 Gig RAM

Appletalk relies on ethernet, but ethernet on OS X is
Off until you give it an IP address. Go to Network
prefs, Show built-in ethernet, TCP/IP tab and set
"Configure Manually" and enter a valid local-only IP
    address, like 192.168.5.5.
    Now appletalk will work.
Thanks, Greg. You just saved me after about 2 hours of frustration with my ibook not being able to see that Appletalk was on. Yay

  • Problem setting up shared printer between PC and Mac with 10.6

I am trying to setup a shared printer between my Mac and PC. I have a HP K80 attached to my PC (which has Vista Home Premium). I have a Macbook pro with 10.6. I have shared the printer on the PC side. From the Mac I have added the printer via Windows Printer sharing, but for some reason I cannot print to the printer. Everytime I try to print, the job just pauses. Is there something I am doing wrong?

Thanks I installed the gutenprint drivers and tried this, and now all working:
    http://guides.macrumors.com/Printingto_a_Shared_PCPrinter
Printing to a Shared PC Printer
This article describes how to print from Mac OS X to a shared printer connected to a Windows XP machine. It assumes the computers are already networked and that you can access the PC's files. These instructions are relevant for Mac OS X 10.2 upwards. The instructions may work with Vista. I don't have the means to try it.
    1. Find the IP address of your PC - go on Start > Run. Type in cmd and click run. Now type in ipconfig /all and hit enter. This should give you the machine's IP address.
    2. Share the printer. Open up Printers and find the one you want to share. Right-click and choose Share. Now click the 'Share this printer' radio button. Now choose a sharing name. Keep it simple - e.g. HP, Office, PC etc.
    3. Open a web browser on your Mac and type localhost:631 in the address bar
    4. You should now have the Common UNIX Printing System web interface up. Click the 'Add Printer' link.
    5. Type a name for the printer, making sure you don't include /, # or space characters. Click continue.
    6. Select Windows Printer via SAMBA from the Device list and click continue.
    7. For the URI, you need to include a username and password for an account on your PC. You then need to enter a URI in the following format: smb://username:password@ipaddress/printer. So for example smb://johndoe:[email protected]/HP
    8. Choose your printer's make, or if you have a PPD file for the printer, choose that. Click continue and choose your printer's model. Now click Add Printer.
    9. Done! You now have a list of options for changing the various properties of the printer.
You don't need to be on the same workgroup or domain as your PC, just the same subnet. If both your Mac and PC are connected to the same router, either wired or wirelessly, then you should be on the same subnet.
    Thanks guys

  • Problems with setting up USB printer on Time Capsule.

I've just bought Time Capsule (4th Gen, 2TB, Airport Utility v6.0) and got it connected to Internet creating private network. It works ok but I can't set up network printer via TC. The printer (Canon pixma iP90) is working fine connected directly to my iMac (Mac OS X 10.7.3) but I can't get it working through TC.
TC manual (pages 17&30) asks to open Printer Setup Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. The problem is that I can't find this Print Setup Utility in the indicated folder.
Please help me to solve this puzzle. Thanks.

There have been a number of very recent changes....AirPort Utility 6.0 is one of them.....so things probably won't track with manuals that were printed months ago and have not yet been updated.
Connect the printer to the USB port on the Time Capsule and make sure everything is powered up.
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Print & Scan
Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list on the left
Hopefully, your printer or printer family will appear in the next window
Click on the name of the printer to highlight it
Click Add at the the lower right of the window
    Try to print.
Be sure to select the correct printer location in the print dialog box since you now have the printer installed at two different locations....your Mac and the Time Capsule. You need to choose the correct location before you click the "Print" button.
Might be a good idea to make the printer at the Time Capsule your default printer in the Print & Scan box.

  • I have an old (read ancient) Apple Laserwriter 12/640 PS laser printer that I want to print to using my PC (running Windows 7). Suggestions?

I have an old (read ancient) Apple Laserwriter 12/640 PS laser printer - that still prints exceptionally well - that I want to print to using my PC (running Windows 7). Suggestions? While using Windows XP Pro, I used PC MacLan's version 9.01 and it worked beautifully. PC Maclan is no longer in business. Windows 7, however, doesn't even recognize any Apple printers in any of its lookups. Suggestions?

The LaserWriter 12/640 PS is a PostScript Level 2 and PCL5 printer with support for LPD (http://support.apple.com/kb/ta21876). How is the printer connected today? An external cable adapter (such as the Apple Ethernet Twisted-Pair Transceiver Model M0437) would allow Ethernet. Providing that an appropriate printer driver can be found (it may be worth checking whether a universal driver or a driver for a similar HP printer could be used), it should not be impossible to set up LPR printing under Windows 7.

  • LaserWriter 12/640 & Ethernet Transceiver

I'm trying to connect to a LaserWriter 12/640 with a Ethernet Transceiver, since this appaers to be the only way to access the 12/640 using Ethernet.
I'm using a MacBook Pro with 10.4.6. I'd be happy just to directly connect to it. But so far Print Utility cannot 'see' it, nor does it show up using 'atlookup' in Terminal. Yet AppleTalk is activated on the MacBook Pro.
    Any ideas?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

When everything is working correctly, Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger can recognize devices that connect AppleTalk-over-Ethernet using a Transceiver. You would use the Sytem Preferences > Print and Fax > Set up Printers > "Add a Printer" function, choose AppleTalk, and the Printer should appear.
If it does not, it is likely to be some sort of Hardware problem. Do you trust the cable you are using? Do you trust the transceiver? Does the transceiver have any lights on it? (I would expect the lights to flash indicating activity).
The transceiver gets its power from the Printer, so a good connection there is essential, and those cursed little hooks that retain it can easily get bent and interfere with making a good connection. Are you using a Hub or switch for the connection, or a direct cable connection?
Do you have the printer set to a number that ignores the Ethernet port? (The safest number is usually zero.) Does the printer print a configuration page when powered up? (That sometimes has some helpful configuration information on it).

  • LaserWriter 12/640 - 3 Questions

Hi, this is my first post here,
I have three questions, I hope you can help me:
    1) I have just acquired a Laserwriter 12/640. It prints fine from the bottom tray but when trying to print from the multipurpose tray it has a paper jam before the paper is even drawn in. Would that video kit fix this or are there things that can be checked before I buy it?
    2) The Laserwriter is connected via ethernet to my modem. I have noticed on my Netgear ADSL router modem that the port number light for the LaserWriter is orange instead of the usual green. The Laserwriter has an IP that I assign to it, but doesn't DHCP give out the IP's automatically? I remember manually setting the IP on one of my Macs and was unable to connect. So why does it work on my Laserwriter and can I do something to get rid of the orange light?
    3) This question is about printing to two trays at once (Not as important as question 1 or 2.)
What I basically want is to make a printer preset that will print one copy of a (one page) document from the Multipurpose tray (Using Recycled Paper for us) and another copy from the cassette (Using fresh paper for my dad's clients). ( I was trying this when I had our old 16/600 but couldn't figure it out )
I have set it to 2 copies, and for the "first page" to multipurpose tray and "remaining pages" to the cassette. But when I print, 2 pages will come out of the multipurpose tray (because the second page isn't actually the second page - it is a copy of the first page so the settings start again).
Is there any sort of option that can make "2 Copies" into one print job so there will actually be a second page?
    An Applescript perhaps?
(Also, it isn't very convinient to print it out twice using different settings due to MYOB closing the invoice once it has been printed, then you have to go through several windows to get it back.)
    Thanks,
    Ben

    1) Does the paper from the multipurpose tray actually jam and crumple, or does it simply report a paper jam? If the latter, it may be what I refer to as a mis-pick -- the failure to pick up the sheet of paper at the appropriate time.
Mis-picks can be caused by a worn out or glazed pick up roller. If the roller is not worn out, but merely glazed, you can sometimes get a slight improvement by scrubbing the roller with an eraser to scuff up the surface and break up the glazing. The professional way is to use "rubber rejuvenator". A reasonable sized can can be bought from:
    http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/search/center?q=laserwriter+12%2F640
In a pinch, "Goof Off" latex paint remover can be used for the same purpose. These are strong solvents, and they will melt plastics if they are handled sloppily or spilled on the case.
    2) It appears (based on lack of responses) that no one knows more about your ADSL router than you. I am not trying to be a jerk, but your manual is probably the best source for more detailed information. If you need help finding documentation on that specific model, post the exact model and folks will be happy to help you locate it online.
Perhaps the amber light is indicating it has connected at lower speed than your Mac.
    3) I do not have a crisp solution to this situation, but I have a suggestion. Print your invoices with copies=2, and place one single sheet of recycled paper in the multipurpose tray for your copy. For most printers, it will feed the recycled paper first, then (when no more paper is in the multipurpose tray) feed copy 2 from the "good" paper in the bottom tray. If you forget to load the recycled paper you get two good copies instead, so the penalty of screwing up is fairly low.

  • Configuring an Apple LaserWriter 12/640 Printer to work with Mountain Lion

I have an Apple LaserWriter 12/640PS printer that works great.  But since LION and now MOUNTAIN LION I cannot connect to it.  Previously I had an ethernet cable going from my D-Link DIR-635 Router to a LocalTalk (AppleTalk) adapter which then plugs into the printer into it's "Ethernet" (AppleTalk or also called the EtherTalk) port.
OK now I no longer have the D-Link router, rather a new (latest 5th generation) Apple Extreme. More info: my ISP changed some things and the LaserWriter is now "set" on an IP address of:  192.168.0.123  which seems to be out of the range of my ISP allotted numbers – but perhaps I can change that manually by accessing my ISP's modem via the website / setup area??
BUT I am thinking that since I really only need to print to this LaserWriter from my one MacBook Pro running 10.8.2 Mountain Lion – could I not find either a Parallel to USB adapter or some other (USB to DIN8-"LocalTalk" port)???  I used to have some software and a cable (Parallel to DIN8) for my PowerBook back in 1994 that let me print to a parallel-port only printer back then, seems like yesterday actually…
The LaserWriter has these 3 ports:  LocalTalk (DIN8 type I think); EtherTalk (not an RJ45 cable!) and Parallel.
I also have a G4-733 Mac from 2001 that can startup in OS 9.2.2 -- but I don't seem to find the Printer with that (via the Ethernet cable to the adapter to the EtherTalk port of the LaserWriter printer).  This G4-733 does not have "DIN8" ports - just USB (I believe 2.0 but not certain - USB 2 came out in 1999 so I think this is 2.0 and I can check when I next boot this Mac).  It also has FW400 and SCSI but don't think that helps much for printing.  Ethernet RJ45 of course also.
Any ideas on what to do here.  Again, it worked before via my current set-up and perhaps the key is just changing the IP address (or enabling this address via my Apple Extreme or via the ISP's modem setup via the web address).
Hope this is somewhat clear--- think I have most of the information on one page here.  I can run tests, buy adapters or cables if necessary-- have enough cartridges to print another 10,000 pages at least!!
    Thanks in advance.
    Best regards,

    Hi Stephen,
Somehow I missed this topic as well. For that printer, you would attract more attention in another area (this one).
You have a number of options along the lines of what greg sahli suggested. I do not have that exact model LaserWriter, but I have successfully used a wired print server, a wireless print server, and a USB to parallel cable adapter to print from current production Macs to a similar model LaserWriter. All three options worked effortlessly. As long as yours is a PostScript printer, which it is, it should work.
See this post for details and options: Laserwriter Pro 630, Mountain Lion, and Macbook Pro

  • Configuring Laserwriter 12/640 with a Jetdirect 300X and Laserwriter 12/640

My home network consists of two Intel iMacs running 10.6.8 and a Quicksilver.  I had been using a Quicksilver as server for my home network, storing pictures and music for all computers to access.  This worked well as a print server for the Laserwriter 12/640.  The time has come to retire the Quicksilver which created my print server problem.
I have Connected the Jetdirect to my network and am using a DB-25 to Centronics to connect to the Laserwriter.  The IP address of the Jetdirect is 192.168.1.75.  I have tried the following protocols with no cussess.  Internet Printing ProtocoI, Line Printer Daemon, and HP Jetdirect - socket.  I have also tried using generic postscript printer, generic PLC printer, and Apple Laserwriter 12/640 PS v2015.105.  I can add the printer to my system preferences, but it will not print.  I get an error message "Unable to connect to printer, will retry in 30 seconds..." or "Network Host is busy will retry in 5 seconds..."
Thanks for your help resolving this issue.

There is no LaserWriter software to install under Mac OS X. It is built into Mac OS X in a way that is near-impossible to remove. There is no need to install it in OS 9 either, because laserWriter 8 Chooser extension should be installed by default.
What is needed is to turn on AppleTalk on your Ethernet port. Use System Preferences > Network > Network Status to check that your Ethernet is up and happy. Then double-click on the Built-In Ethernet entry and another screen opens showing: Built-in Ethernet and 5 tabs across the pane:
    TCP/IP | PPPoE | AppleTalk | Proxies | Ethernet
Click the TCP/IP tab and be sure you have a reasonable Ethernet Address. Then click the AppleTalk tab and turn on AppleTalk, if not already on. If AppleTalk was assigned to another port, you will get a message saying AppleTalk can only be active on one port at a time, do you really want this one -- say Yes. If you are having a problem seeing any AppleTalk devices, it is possible that AppleTalk is not enabled in Directory Access. Post back for how to fix that.
The AsanteTalk is notorious for not re-acquiring devices that drop out for any reason. If you think it may have lost contact with the Printer, cycle the power on both the printer and the Asantetalk, and do not turn on the AsanteTalk until one minute after the printer is ready to print. Then try to look from the Mac again.

  • LaserWriter 12/640 PS

What is the best was to get one of these on my Ethernet Network? If that's not possible, how do I get it connect to an Intel Powerbook running Leopard? Thanks!

Your printer is a member of the class of Apple LaserWriter Printers with Ethernet and Built-in LPD:
    LaserWriter 8500 (Ethernet)
    LaserWriter 12/640 PS (Ethernet)
    Color LaserWriter 12/660 PS (Ethernet)
    Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS (Ethernet)
    LaserWriter 16/600PS (Ethernet)
    LaserWriter Pro 810 (Ethernet)
Once connected to a port on your Router, this network printer can allow access to all its features using AppleTalk-over-Ethernet, and/or most features using LPR/LPD (aka Internet Printing).
Use with AppleTalk requires you to turn on AppleTalk for each computer, in the System Preferences > Network pane that controls the port that connects it to the Router (typically Ethernet, sometimes Airport).
Use with LPR/LPD may require assigning a fixed Ethernet address to the printer, and knowing what that address is when you go to Add the Printer.

how do I set up my printer to only print in black?

Please read this post then provide some details.  What printer model? What operating system?   Depending on your printer model you might remove the color cartridge, forcing black only printing, or select "Print in Grayscale" and "Black ink only" in the driver.
Some printer models (whether from HP or other manufacturers) may not allow printing in black if the color inks are empty.  There are also some other constraints, black only printing is generally not available when printing on photo papers and may not be available when printing with an automatic two-sided duplexer.
