If my plan is a family plan is it possible to put one line on Verizon edge or would all of the lines have to be on Verizon edge

i have my upgrade next month and i would like to know if it would be possible to pay off a device monthly through Verizon edge without effecting the other devices on the plan with 2 year contracts

Certainly. You can have only one line on Edge if you like. It does not effect any other line.

  • Mac Pro's (early 2008) Back up plan towards a possible OS upgrade to Yosemite

Hello All. Here’re some of the details/background info…hopefully all this won’t be so annoying. Your feedback is highly appreciated. Thanks a bunch!
I have 2 Mac Pro’s (Early 2008) 3,1 both running SL (10.6.8). One I have been using non-stop throughout these years, I’d call it MP 2008 (A). The other one once belong to a friend who actually bought it around the same time I purchased mine, only that he didn’t use it much and just recently decided to sell it to me. I’d call it MP 2008 (B). Both MP’s are very light on data on the main, boot HD, just applications,… as everything I work on is kept in external hard drives and backups. I do not usually download any third party stuff (only when strictly necessary for my work) and essentially it’s all about the software and applications (Adobe CS3 and LR 0.2) I need to do my pretty basic work.
All pretty old stuff by now, I know.
Following a couple of mishaps and lots of good advice in these forums, (thanks to the hatter, etc.) I went ahead and bought 16GB of RAM for both, and an NVidia Graphics Card (all from Amazon.com) for my MP 2008 (A) to replace it after it went bad, and everything has been working just fine. As you can tell, I have not tried to upgrade much, but rather keep everything stock and running as smoothly as possible.
I am afraid the next big, important thing I MUST do is back up my almost 6 years-old HD (I know, it should’ve been done long ago). Frankly, I have never done it before because I didn’t even know that could be possible…I learned about it right here, in this forum. In this sense, much I have also read (here) about the SSD option, and about how great of an upgrade that could be too, but I have decided to stick to the regular 3.5” for now. (I just recently found out those SSD even existed!). Hopefully, once I gain a bit of confidence on how this works I’ll jump into the SSD option, cards, etc. So, I purchased 2X 3.5” SATA III HD’s to try cloning my MP 2008 (A) boot, main HD and get this process over with.
    QUESTIONS
QUESTION #1: After installing the internal hard drives in bays 2 and 3: Do I have to specifically format them in order to turn them into bootable copies? If so, how do I do that? I have read about using ‘Disk Utility’ to format external hard drives for this purpose but I don’t know if that would apply for internal hard drives as well.
QUESTION #2: What are the settings/features you all recommend I should select/or deselect on CCC so I can have exact, bootable copies of my original HD? No fancy stuff, advanced options, etc…just what I need to have good enough copies that just work.
QUESTION #3: How do I test them?
I noticed that under “System Preferences/System/Startup Disk” I can select the drive/system I want to use to start up my computer from. My question is:
QUESTION #4: Can I permanently choose any of the Mac Pro four (4) bays/bootable hard drives as the main drive/system for startup? I always thought I could only be done from the original, ‘main’ bootable drive in bay 1.
QUESTION #5: What if the copy fails? How do I go back to the HD that works or to the next copy, for that matter?
About my MP 2008 (B): In an effort to sell me his MP, my friend (as knowledgeable as I am) messed up something that delays the start up a lot. I noticed that in the finder, the applications appear double, etc., so I am not so happy with it. Even though the little house icon has his name in the finder, he was able to make me the Administrator for the machine (I don’t know how). But again, it starts up to the typical chime, then a gray screen for quite a loooong while, then the apple logo, then the loading animation…and theeennnn it starts…and no known issues from there. In other words, I am sure he messed something up there while transferring this machine to me and now its startup is so delayed.
QUESTION #6: Let’s say that both the bootable HD copies I created on my MP 2008 (A) work fine: Can I take one out and install it in my MP 2008 (B) and eventually turn it into my startup drive and work from there too? Will this eventually lead to conflicting stuff? (Two machines, same identical cloned start up drive??).
Eventually, the plan is that I learn how to do all this so I can move on and upgrade with a clean install of Yosemite pretty soon.
Hopefully, both my Mac Pro’s 2008 A and B will last me a bit more and I can get to squeeze a few more seasons from them. They are awesome machines!
As you can tell, in theory I might have a little bit of a clue, but all is in the details. If you don’t mind, please shed some light on this process I am about to begin…thanks a bunch!

    Thank you!

Re: Mac Pro's (early 2008) Back up plan towards a possible OS upgrade to Yosemite  in response to Juan Huerta
All new drives need to be partitioned GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled before they can be used.
OK, is that an option I'll be prompted to by the OS or do I have to "tell" that to...Disk Utilities (?)
If cloning is your purpose then use Disk Utility's Restore option. It will clone the drives and their Recovery HD partitions automatically.
I didn't know that Disk Utility had an option for cloning a bootable drive...is it better than CCC? (I have used neither one) I really would like to save $40 and avoid downloading additional software/applications...please if you don't mind...what option would that be once I click on "Disk Utility"? If you know of a good link or reliable article on the topic that will work for me too.
Test a clone be trying to boot the computer from it.
Any bootable drive in any bay can be used to boot the computer. Use Startup Drive preferences to set the desired boot volume.
Erase the target and try again.
But if the computer fails to start because I didn't create a good copy, how do I go back? Keyboard shortcuts? I keep reading that a wired keyboard must be used...and that's scary. If that's true, could I hook up any of my Windows based keyboards via USB?
Erase the drive and install OS X. You cannot use any software installed by the prior owner that was purchased via the App Store including OS X. You must start from scratch. (this actually is 5B rather than item 6.)
Well, he created an Admin account for me and I have been handling updates and everything with the new password he created for me. I wonder if I could access the Apple Store with my ID though...it's all under my name in that computer though, so I figure that at the Apple Store I'd just enter my ID...I guess, I have not tried that yet
    Yes.

  • Have 4 phones on ALLTEL Family, want to upgrade 2 to iPhone. Do we all have to switch plans? Can we stay on one bill?

    Hello,
My parents sister and I currently use the old Alltel Family National Freedom 900 plan and have four basic phones. We would like to upgrade 2 of the phones to iPhones and leave the other two phones as basic.  Do we need to change plans?  Would we need to switch all four of us to a More Everything plan?   Or is it now possible to have the two basic phones stay on the old ALLTEL plan and use More everything for the 2 smartphones/iPhones AND keep everything on one bill?
To restate slightly, can this transaction be done online, and will the website calculate the total monthly service charge per month for all 4 phones at checkout (hopefully using the 2 mentioned plans)?
So far, I've run through the process, and it looks surprisingly possible.  But I am very wary of clicking the red button without assurance. This may need to be sorted out at a store.
    Sincerely,
    Mike

It is possible but you cannot have 2 family share plans on one acct, you can do single line plans for the upgraded phones and leave the other 2 if they are on a share plan, or move all to the more everything share plan, or you could move 2 lines to a sub account so that you are under the same account but you will get 2 separate bills. I would definitely go to a store or call if that is easier for you to go over all your options, good luck :)

  • Will my bill increase if I cancel all but one line on my family plan?

I would like to keep one line (a smartphone) on my family plan and cancel the other 3 lines (2 smartphones and one basic phone). The contract is up on the 3 lines I want to cancel at the end of October, but the contract isn't up for the one line I want to keep until December. If I cancel all but the one, will my bill go up/change to a single personal plan on the single line for the remainder of its contract length? I tried calling customer service and doing the online chat and couldn't get through to talk to an actual person. I'm getting ready to just jump ship and not keep any lines at this point.

Don't jump, rilobilly. We don't want to see you go! We do offer a Single Line Plan http://vz.to/1d0wrWV for only $60 per month with 2GB if you do decide to leave only one smartphone on your plan. What plan do you have now? What has you wanting to cancel so many of your lines? We want to help.

I plan to purchase a Mac mini and then a new iPad.  Can I use the iPad as a keyboard and screen for the Mac mini, using either the USB connector or Wi-Fi?

I'm sorry, I should have said thru Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi.  I want to use the mini as a base station and the iPad like a laptop that I can sync when I'm home and carry with me when I travel.  Is is possible to hook these 2 up - iPad/mini, through Bluetooth?  I understand I need to use a regular monitor/keyboard/mouse on the initial install.

dianneb, great question and thanks for the help Weth. The good news is if you're on More Everything the mobile hotspot would be apart of your plan just as Weth mentioned. What you just want to keep in mind is that the usage from the tablet while connected to the hotspot would take from your current plan allowance. Hope this helps!

  • All Hyperion IT folks have access to salary info in Workforce Planning

Most Planning Workforce applications store employee names and their salaries.
However, a very experienced/seasoned consultant friend of mine was adamant that private employee information not be loaded into Planning/ Essbase. He suggest that we explain to Lawyers in our Legal and HR department what we are trying to do and most likely they will not allow private information to be exposed to Riverbed managers & Planners. He claims that even employee names should not be in Planning/ Essbase, that we should load them as employee1, employee2 etc. Only HR should have the true names of employee1… employee5000.
Can anyone weight in with their opinions as to whether it is a good idea to store salary information in Essbase? A simple mistake in setting Essbase security could expose salary to the wrong budget managers. Also, all Hyperion IT folks have access to salary info . Is that "kosher" with companies in USA?

Typically when you have salary information in a planning application and it is done by employee (instead of position, or department), you ensure that you do not have both name and salary and you most certainly do not have social security information.
Oftentimes you will find yourself in a spot where one department or position has only 1 person in it... it is an unfortunate circumstance - but it is not uncommon. If you want to prevent that you often have to change how you plan - and that is not a great option. Whether this data exists in a relational database or a BI application is inconsequential in my opinion (because that still means it exists somewhere), it is just something that you're going to have to live with in that case.
Usually you mask the employee name with an employee ID. However, in talking to some folks I know, there is a company that currently would like to have the employee name as the alias of the employee ID, because the planners cant plan without knowing who they are planning for. If they are planning information in that manner right now (whether it is in an application such as Peoplesoft or even an excel spreadsheet), where all information is visible and it is not deemed a violation by legal/HR then it is probably fine. However, their old system probably had to go through a security audit of some sort - which means that you will probably have to have member-level security on multiple dimensions in order for this to work, and that's going to be a massive pain. Because, as we all know security filters in planning when pushed down to essbase all get manifested in 1 row... meaning if you have security to plan salaries for dept 123, and you have access to depts 124, 125, 126, and 127, you will also be able to see salaries for all of those departments, you cant specify (at least in an easy way through planning) I want to be able to see salary for dept 123 for 124, but see everything but salary for dept 125, 126, and 127.
With all of that being said I would strongly advise that you raise the issue to them, because this is not exactly keeping information 'secure' and confidential. If they have strict audit requirements, the design may have to become more complex to accomodate.

  • I plan to upgrade to a newer iPad. If I reset my old one will I be able to get all my data on my new one?

I plan to upgrade to a newer iPad.  After I reset my old iPad to clear it for sale, will I be able to get my old data to my new iPad? I will be getting a WIFI only iPad.  My old one is a 3G/WIFI.
    Message was edited by: MadMX

Do not reset the old iPad until you transfer all purchase, backup and sync with iTunes one final time. After you have down all three you can then reset the iPad to factory settings.
I would NOT reset the old iPad until you set up the new one just in case - but that is up to you. Before you reset the iPad ...
Connect your iPad to the computer and launch iTunes. If you use auto sync just go ahead and let the iPad sync. Before you disconnect the iPad, right click on the iPad name on the left side under the devices heading and select Transfer Purchases. Let the process complete and then right click on the iPad name again and select Backup. Let the process complete and then sync one last time. Now all of your purchased content should be in iTunes on your computer and all of your data will be in the backup.
When you set up the new iPad you can restore from the backup of the first iPad and resycn all of your content as well.

  • I am planning to buy DSLR Camera which one should I go for .

     Dear Team,
I am planning to buy DSLR Camera which one should I go for . I have selected  three camera models EOS Rebel T4i DSLR , EOS Rebel T5i DSLR  or EOS 7D please let know the cons and pros of the three cameras and help in buying .
    Regards,
    Kalyan

There's not much of a jump from the T4i to the T5i; Canon releases updates to these Rebels so frequently they often lack substance.  Looking at the specs I don't see anything that jumps out at me - I'd grab whichever one I could get cheaper.
The 7D is a substantial jump up.  Much more sophisticated autofocus.  Faster burst rate, shorter shutter lag, weather sealing, better build, better LCD, viewfinder coverage, etc.  Keep in mind it's the same old sensor, but there's a lot more to a camera than a sensor.   The 7D has been the go to camera of sports enthusiasts for years.
Edit:  I didn't mean to sound like I was selling the Rebels short, I think they're a great camera for the price, depending on your needs.  There are things that more novice photographers may prefer in a camera over the 7D, like built in flash, or the flip out screen, or in-camera HDR.

  • I've used almost all of the 30 gigs of my 4G LTE wireless internet plan for this month.

Hello, I've used almost all of the 30 gigs of my 4G LTE wireless internet plan for this month and I'd like to purchase additional data immediately. How do I go about this?

If you are on the special double data offer getting 30GB for $130, you can't change data plan without losing your $130 deal.  In this case it may be best to absorb overages
if you just have 30 GB at regular price, you can go online and go to the next data level and retrospectively apply it to the first day of your plan.
