Im thinking of buying an iPad 2 is it compatible with pcs? can i downloud a report from it and then use excel on a pc from there?

I am thinking of buying and I pad 2.  Is it compatible with pcs?  Is it a good option for a college computer? I have a Mac at home that i can use to print written reports off but is it possible to download a report to a pc and use excel or some other system like that? Or does Apple have app like excel.
Also do most professors accept Apple documents? Like pages and such.
Thanks for the Assist Ashton.

iPads are absolutely compatible with Windows PCs. Through iTunes File Sharing you can transfer documents from supported apps to your computer. Most professors don't support iWork file formats, however iWork on the iPad can save in either iWork format or Microsoft Office format so you will be fine as long as you save it as an Office format.

The Ipad is on a short cable to my projector. I am usually on a podium 30 feet away. No infra red receiver on the IPad and
the Iphone remote needs wi fi which is not always available in all the locations I do my teaching and lecturing in.
If you can build a remote into the Ipad in the future I would really like to use an Ipad to replace my heavier lap top for business travel. Thank You Kathy McNeil.

    Get a longer cable?

To the best of my knowledge, it isn't. The 3rd-gen iPad supports LTE only on AT&T and Verizon in the US:

International LTE support came only with the 4th-generation iPad, unless the information I reference from Apple is incorrect/incomplete.

I've had my iPod classic for some time now, and up to now have been connecting it to my laptop to sync any downloaded tunes from iTunes.  Unfortunately, the laptop has died and I'm thinking of buying a iPad.....but how do I now get any songs downloaded from iTunes to my iPod?

If an iPod is set to update automatically it will be associated with a particular library. If you connect that iPod to a different computer or a different library on the same computer you get the the message you are referring to. "The iPod "iPod Name"is linked to another another iTunes music library. Do you want to change the link to this iTunes music library and replace all existing songs and playlists on this iPod with those from this library". To use an iPod on multiple computers you change the update method to "manually manage songs and playlists". You can also use multiple iPods on a single computer so you will be able to connect both of your iPods to your existing iTunes. Connect the new iPod and follow the on screen instructions, iTunes will open and update your iPod.
    For info:
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
    1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
    2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
    3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

I'm thinking of buying an iPad.  Can I use my home's wifi or do I need to get a plan for it?

Another thing to note is that if your cell plan/carrier supports it (it's free with Verizon Shared plans), you can also use your mobile phone as a mobile hotspot (Personal Hotspot on iOS devices) and use your phone's data to access the internet on the iPad. I purchased an iPad 3 with Verizon 3G/4G cellular built-in but have never activated it. I instead use Personal Hotspot with my Verizon Wireless cellular (phone) plan. If you go this route, you can save money over purchasing a Wi-Fi/Cellular iPad and just choose the Wi-Fi model. But also realize that if you choose to at some point to use the iPad when you're away from Wi-Fi, you won't have the built-in cellular capability that a Wi-Fi/Cellular iPad would have.

She is 68 years old and has vision problems. My thought is that it would be eaiser for her to see than a ipod touch. She would use it for music, maybe reading, some games. I'm not sure she would be adept enough to download many apps, so we'd prbably load it up for her.
    Thanks for any input!

She's going to need to update and at some point restore the iPad which requires a computer.
For vision problems she can enable zoom. Tap Settings / General / Accessibility.

    Many thanks for any advice.

You don't need conversion programs, iTunes can copy most of your content over to the iPad via the file sharing section, and some apps also support Dropbox, email attachments, transfer via your wifi network. There are a number of apps that you can get that support Microsoft office file (microsoft don't make an app versions of their software) e.g. from Apple there are Pages (word support), Numbers (excel) and Keynote (powerpoint), and from third-parties there are apps such as Documents To Go and QuickOffice HD

  • Thinking of buying another iPad for Mom. Do I have to buy one with service from Verizon since I have it already,or can I just buy one with wi-fi and no service provider?

I am thinking of buying an iPad Mini or iPad Air for my Mom.  Do I have to get one for my Verizon account or can I just buy a wi-fi enabled one?  they are much cheaper.  She has free wi-fi in her facility.  Thanks!

All iPads come in wifi only or wifi + cellular. Just get the wifi version.

  • Thinking of buying an ipad

I'm thinking of buying an iPad but have a couple of questions.
    1.  Can I run word processing software in the ipad?
    2.  If so, can I sync files between the iPad and my home laptop (PC)?

I use docs 2 go for all ms office functions. Main reason being that I can just save to dropbox and then instantly access the file on my pc and visa versa.
However , as brilliant as the iPad and as proficient at using the keyboard as I am I wouldn't use it for extensive word processing activities, I would use an external keyboard or an actually notebook. Also, the word processors are limited in some ways.
Head on down to an apple store where you can play with one and see how you get on.

No it's not stealing. They have an allowance that you can share with so many computers/devices. You'll have to authorize her computer to play/use anything bought on your acct. You can do this under the Store menu at top when iTunes is open on her computer.
As far as getting it all on her computer....I think but I am not sure (because I don't use the feature) but I think if you turn on Home Sharing in iTunes it may copy the music to her computer. I don't know maybe it just streams it. If nothing else you can sign into your acct on her computer and download it all to her computer from the cloud. Not sure exactly how to go about that, I haven't had to do that yet. I wonder if once you authorize her computer and then set it up for automatic downloads (under Edit>Preferences>Store) if everything would download. Sorry I'm not much help on that.

I've installed Photoshop Elements 12 from a CD onto my PC laptop. I'm thinking about buying a tablet, so was wondering if (a) can I install on a 2nd device (b) can I use the serial number online as I won't beable to install from a CD, and (c) will I beable to choose a mac, after the initial was on a PC???? Thanks Martin

A single user license allows for having activated installations on two machines. An Elements license allows for either platform in many cases (recently not the case from what I've seen).  If you have the disc, see if it contains the Mac installation files... if it does then you should be able to install them via a download as well.  I cannot answer with certainty for the last question since it relies on the previous question.  Personally, I would not let an inexpensive piece of software dictate an expensive hardware purchase decision.

I've always had 16GB iDevices and have personally never had any problem with running out of space. You definitely do not need to keep everything on the device (like 2-3 weeks or more of solid music playback). You can always offload what you don't need on the device to your PC and have plenty of space. If you mange your memory, you will always have enough...and I've always had enough, even with a "paltry" 16GB. Others may feel differently.

How do I reorganize my photos on iPad 2?  I need to move (not copy) photos from one album to another.  When I use the copy function to another album, and then try to delete an image from the original album, the system wants to delete the photos from all albums.  Please help.

You can't do it directly on the iPad - the new album functionality basically only allows you to copy photos into those new albums, you can't move them. The way that I think of it as working is that you are just creating pointers to the photos in those new albums, so if you then delete the original photo on the iPad you therefore automatically delete all the pointers to it.
If you want to re-organise your albums then you will need to do it on your computer and then sync those albums over to the iPad
