IMac G5 (Intel): shut down, and won't turn on

I've had my iMac now for well over a month now, I'd say about 2 months, and after the first week I removed the default memory stick that came with it, and installed 4 GB (2x2). The computer has been running fine with the new memory for over a month, so I'm pretty sure the memory is not an issue, the computer itself has been working perfect up until tonight.
So I was doing my normal web surfing, and little bit of graphics editing when out of nowhere the iMac just shut down, like it went from a regular screen to just black screen. I then proceeded by hitting the power button, and got nothing. Held the power button down for 15-20 seconds, then hit the power button once again holding for 2-3 seconds. Now I hear the hard drive sound, like it's starting up the hard drive, but I never hear the Apple "aaahhhh" sound, nor does my screen even turn on. It would seem as if it just dies from there but it's obviously not, because if I goto tap the power button again for 2-3 seconds it won't make the same noise the hard drive makes when it's turned on. But if I hold the power button down again for 15-20 seconds, then proceed by tapping the power button again afterwards I can hear the hard drive sound like it starts up again, but still no screen no Apple sound.
*Failed Fixes Tried:*
- removed memory and reinserted memory.
- remove power cord for 30 seconds, plug back in, start up.
- make sure the power cord is plugged in to an outlet with power (I more than obviously think it is receiving power due to the hard drive sound starting up, but maybe the computer is not being fed enough voltage which is why it's not starting up? Then again it's still odd because I've been using it like this fine for months.

Take it in for service.

  • My iPhone 4 shut down and won't turn on again. What should i do?

My iPhone 4 shut down and won't turn on again. I tried charging it and do it again...When i charge it , it opens the " Connect to iTunes" , when i switch to the computer to connect it , it doesn't work... It starts to the apple screen , and then just shuts down again. I tried holding the home and sleep/wake button at the same time..I tried everything. What should i do?

Your iPhone is going back and forth between recovery mode and powering on which is really strange.
Have you tried a hardware reset while its connected to your computer? This will force it back into recovery mode so that you can restore it. If restoring and setting up as new doesn't help, go ahead and take it to an Apple Store for a replacement

  • IPhone 5 shut down and won't turn back on

My phones screen turned a blue/greenish color and shut down and will not turn back on :(

I'm having the same issue with my iPhone5.  It just started yesterday afternoon.  The "hard reset" as you suggested worked once.  However, it shut down again only one hour later.  It didn't turn on (even with the hard reset) for three hours when the hard reset worked again.  I hooked it up to iTunes and restored my phone and thought that it would fix the issue.  But after being on for about two hours, my screen got vertical lines then turned green and shut off again.  I haven't been able to turn it back on no matter what I do all night and all day today.
It doesn't matter that the phone is plugged in or have 100% battery power.  It just won't turn on again.
I have an appointment at my local Apple Genuis Bar, but I'm not sure what they can do as I'm not sure if this is a software or a hardware issue.

  • My iPhone 4 shut down and won't turn back on, can I fix this?

  • MacBook randomly shut down, and won't turn back on

First of all, hello. Secondly, I've got a problem with my MacBook: about half an hour ago, it randomly shut down and when I tried to turn it back on, it didn't. Instead, the backlight kept flickering at the tempo that something inside the computer was "clicking", and the longer I held the power button, the more "clicks" there were. Needless to say, I've tried charging the battery, resetting the SMC, and to no avail: I still can't power it up, even when I don't use my battery. Whether I use it or not, the MacBook still "clicks" during my pressing of the power button and stops "clicking" when I release it. My MacBook is a year old. Can someone help me out here?

Me too. Any resolution? I don't want to take it to my local apple place because they're retards, but according to the info on my warranty that's the only place available. Can't believe they don't have an RMA service direct to Cupertino, what a joke.

  • My MacBook suddenly shut down and won't turn back on - how do I get it to turn back on?

My MacBook suddenly shut down after freezing up and I cannot get it to turn back on again.  I tried the suggestions in the manual and none of them worked to turn it back on. Is there something I am not doing correctly?  The little green light on the charger connector is green but not as bright as normal, it was charged by over 70% before it shut down, so I do not think it is a battery problem.  Is there anything I can do to turn it back on?  Thank you for any help given, I really appreciate it.

If it won't bong, then try an SMC reset.

  • My iPhone 4 randomly shut down and won't turn back on.

My iPhone randomly shut down whenever I got a phone call twice in maybe 5 minutes. Now it wont turn on no matter how many times I plug it in or use the home and lock button. Is there anything I can do? After the first time it just turned back on but now it won't.

I just had this happen. Hold the lock and home button down for ten seconds.

  • MacBook Pro shuts down and won't turn on

    Hi r,
Is it running very hot, as in, could this be a thermal shutdown? Download iStat Pro if you don't already have it.

  • My iPod Touch randomly shut down and won't turn back on.

This has happened before so i know what to do, BUT, my main menu button has been broken for a month so I just shut down my iPod to get out of apps. But, now since it won't turn on and I can't reset it, how do I fix it?

    Try:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
Where it says place the iPod in recovery mode, use this program:

If not successful, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • MacBook 13" aluminium shuts down and won't turn back on, please help.

Hi there. I have a MacBook from early 2009 the aluminium one running snow leopard 10.6.1.
Yesterday it shut down automatically, just went black. I plugged it to power and turned it back on after 10 minutes it shut down again. After this it was difficult to turn back on. I would hear half the chime just when you press the power button then it would shut down. After several attempts it would eventually start only to shut back down after 5-10 minutes. I installed a widget to monitor temperature and they were all around 40 degree Celsius. I had much difficulty getting it to start so I tried to start then holding down command, option, r, p and let it chime 4-5 times. After this I now get a kernel panic mis-match between kernel and cpu. I've tried to boot from dvd but the computer shuts down before it fully boots up ....sigh.... Would anyone have an idea of what the problem is or what I can do?? I tried to upgrade to 10.6.4 and then upgrade firmware but it would always shut down before the installation was complete.

    Thanks for the reply
Yes I also assume it is some hardware issue. The temperature readings where 35-45 degrees. I read somewhere on apple webpage that there was an issue with the heatsink on some 13" MacBook, but the heatsink temp readings was around 40 degrees. And even if the laptop has been off for the night and cooled down, it still won't start. I guess I have to see the guys at apple store.

  • My iPhone 5c has just completely shut down and won't turn back on I've only had it 3 days

My iphone5c has just completely shut off, I've tried turning it back on and nothing. I've only had it 3 days

Take the machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them fix it.
I had a similar issue when I was syncing a friend's iPhone (I don't own one) in that the machine shut down when the iPhone was plugged in. But I was able to reboot. A lot of people seems to have the problem that you describe, however.

  • MacBook Pro shut down and won't turn on

Hi, my laptop (only a month old) said it needed to restart in order to finish updating OS X, leaving it briefly I went into the kitchen and when I came back I watched as the screen appeared to be going into sleeping mode but upon closer inspection it turned itself off. Now even though it was 100% charged and plugged in won't turn back on. If anyone has tips would be much appreciated, it is the beginning of the week and I won't be able to get to a mac store until the weekend due to my classes.
    Thanks

Ensure the mac is plugged in.
Hold the power button down and keep it pressed down while you count to 10, then release.
Press the power button once and immediately release. The mac should not start to boot up as normal.

  • IPhone shut down and won't turn back on

    Hello everyone,
I've been enjoying my iPhone for quite some time and recently used the iPod function and docked the iPhone to my iPod Hi-Fi sound system...suddenly the screen goes all white and the phone shuts down. I tried to turn it back on and it wouldn't budge, i've attached it to the charger for about 4 hours now and still nothing. I've tried the home and power button reset but that didn't do anything...If anyone knows what's going on here, please let me know. Thanks for lookin!

If you have charged it directly to the USB on your computer, and not on a hub the only thing that I can surmise is that it is down beyond repair.
You cannot reset since there is no lock.
I suggest you take it to the nearest Apple Store or AT&T Store, wherever you bought the phone and see where that leads. Of course you can also call AppleCare.

  • My 5G iPod shut down and won't turn on.

I charged my 5th generation iPod overnight so when i woke up it was on 100%. i used it for roughly 15 minutes before i had to do something and leave it on the couch for 20 minutes. When i came back it was locked and wouldn't turn on, it just had a black screen. i tried to hold down the power button and not even a dead battery sign came up. i put it on charge and nothing happened again. When tried connecting to iTunes and my mac didn't even recognise that i had plugged in a device. I have a lot of stuff on there so i don't want to have to restore it. (I haven't synced it for a while) There is also no visible smashes on the screen and it was in the same position as where i left it. Please help.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
