IMAP Synchronization - Allowing 2 or more computers to use the same mail account

Hello
I'm new to thunderbird but i seem to find my way around it quite easy.
I have 2 computers both with thunderbird downloaded and 1 email address eg: ([email protected])
I have synced both computers with this mail account but both computers aren't live with each other - eg they store their own sent/draft/read/ folders - locally
My understanding is that it's because its set up using POP3 and not IMAP, I have tried setting up IMAP but keep getting a error messages saying -
"Unable to connect to your IMAP server: You may have exceeded the maximum number of connections to this server "
also another message i see is -
"Thunderbird failed to find the setting for your email account"
I don't know much about this but please can someone help and explain what i need to do clearly for me (step by step would be great)
Just to confirm,Ii need:
Both computers synced to the same mail account so that when one computer sends an email, the OTHER computer sees it in THEIR sent folder too.
My Email server is Hostgator which confirm they allow IMAP
I hope someone can help me with this,
Thank you in advance

What antivirus are you using? AV is a common reason for Thunderbird being unable to check settings with the server.
Given that you're using hostgator, I take it you have acquired your own domain and associated email address? That can make the discovery of the server settings more difficult.
I have my own domain, but the email addresses provided with it are given ugly funtional addresses by my registrar/provider. I have to set up Thunderbird using the ugly addresses, and after the account works I can change it to the "nice" addresses that use my domain. There's also some business with a DNS service that can set up the MX records needed to redirect one address to the other. I'd hope hostgator can handle all this for you.
My point is that this could be more than just a Thunderbird problem.
There is a video tutorial here: http://cdn.hostgator.com/tutorials/mailclients/adding-email-accounts-in-thunderbird.swf
and a text version of the same here:
https://support.hostgator.com/articles/specialized-help/email/articles/specialized-help/email/articles/specialized-help/email/setting-up-email-account-with-thunderbird
Both are woefully out of date and you won't find that exact sequence of dialogues in Thunderbird. Hostgator don't seem to be doing anything unusual or non-standard (except perhaps for the idiosyncratic choice of port 26 to bypass blocks on port 25) but the datedness of this tutorial leaves one wondering if the information in it is still valid.
I think this site is worth a look, too:

  • TS2972 I would like to share my iTunes libraries with my Apple TV from both my iMac and Macbook Pro, but I use the same iTunes account on both devices. Is it possible to link my Apple TV to both devices at the same time?

I recently purchased an Apple TV, and I currently have it linked to my iMac with my iTunes account. I also have a newer MacBook Pro that has some different iTunes media on it than my iMac does, but they share iTunes accounts. Is it possible to link both devices at the same time, have access to media on both computers, and use the same iTunes account on both computers?? It seems Apple TV will only link to one iTunes account per computer, but can access multiple computers if different iTunes accounts are activated on those computers.

You can share multiple libraries with the Apple TV, they don't even need to use the same iTunes account. Just make sure that you use the same ID for homesharing on all devices.

  • Can I use the same iCloud account on more than one PC?

I'm new to iCloud. I use Apple devices but a PC both at home and work. I'd like to have the same iCloud account on both PCs, but not sure if I can do this. Can anybody clarify please?
    Thank you.

Yes, you can use the same iCloud account on more than one device. Thats actually the basic idea of iCloud, syncing and exchanging data of different devices without a cable. E.g. your address book on the iPhone is modified and you computer gets the changes via iCloud…

  • How many computers can share the same iTunes account?

How many computers can share the same iTunes account?

    Hello cincip,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities. The following article provides more information on associating multiple computers with your Apple ID:
iTunes Store: Associating a device or computer to your Apple ID
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627
Your Apple ID can have up to 10 devices and computers (combined) associated with it. Each computer must also be authorized using the same Apple ID. Once a device or computer is associated with your Apple ID, you cannot associate that device or computer with another Apple ID for 90 days. You can view which devices or computers are currently associated, remove unused devices or computers, and see how long before they can be associated with a different Apple ID from the Account Information page in iTunes on your computer.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • HT4722 Hi do I buy a second licence of Compressor on the app store so I can share processing. Want to use the same itunes account.

Hi do I buy a second licence of Compressor on the app store so I can share processing. Want to use the same itunes account.

If you're referring to distributed processing on multiple computers and if they're yours, you don't need another license. Just sign in with your account info and download C4 to the other computer.
If that is not what ypu're referring to, please give a more complete description and perhaps someone can steer you in the right direction.
    Good luck.

  • How do I get six family apple devices to be able to use the same iTunes account to make purchases?

Our family has an iPad, a MacBook Air, 2 iPhones, and 2 iPod touches. I tried to access music in iTunes on my MacBook Air and a message came up that said you can only have 5 devices use the same iTunes account. What can I do to allow us to all use the same account?

Get a second Apple ID. Perhaps you should have two different Apple IDs for each iPhone and iPod Touch.

  • Can we both use the same email account on our iPhones?

My  husband and I each have iPhone 4s (1-4s, 1-4), but we use the same email account.  Can we each have the same email account on our iPhones?  If yes, please provide details.

Yes, just set the same account up on both devices. Make sure it is setup as IMAP (not POP3) so that the first person to check the email account each time doesn't download all the email from the server.
As we don't know who your email provider is, we can't provide any specific details on the setup.

  • I have an ipad&iPhone but used the same iCloud account for both during setup.i now have ran out of iCloud storage!

I have an ipad&iPhone but used the same iCloud account for both during setup.i now have ran out of iCloud storage! If I delete the account from iPhone will I lose the apps from my ipad?
And will new account that i set up on iPhone give me 5gb storage? I assume its not as easy it sounds, it never is!
It is the camera roll on both devices that are using the storage up, and I know I can transfer the photos to a hard copy, which I will but if I can get 5gb from two separate iCloud accounts then that's the route I will take!
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Ps I had originally synced the iPad and iPhone but as far as this apple illiterate operator is aware I managed to stop them syncing a few months at lol.thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
I assume that the same account is required on both devices (it would be rather awkward otherwise) and that most of your space is consumed by back up.
You will need to buy more storage or back up to iTunes instead of iCloud.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

  • I have a Verizon and At&t Iphone 4 can I use the same Itunes account for both phones?

You might have a little "problem" if your payment were by Credit Card, everytime you try to buy something (I mean, try to download something on your iphone, not from your computer) , your going to need to verify your payment... but if u use iTunes Gift Card, you wont have any problem with that

  • How am i able to use the same itunes account on a different ipod?

How am I able to use the same iTunes account on a different iPod?

By just using the same iTunes account.  If you set up the iPod on your computer just make sure that iTunes is signed your account.  Of settingup via wifi, just enter your existing account.  Do not create a new one.

  • Can I use the same iTunes account for 2 iPads without having the same apps on both?

Can I use the same iTunes account for 2 iPads without having the same apps on both? Everytime I try to sync my new iPad, it syncs all the apps that are on my account. If I can do this, can someone tell me how please???

Yes you can, easily.  When you plug the first pad in to sync, note the name of the pad on the last pane.  Set up for that device whatever you want to sync.  When you are done, plug the second pad in.  Make sure it has a different name on the left pane.   Then sync to that pad whatever you want.  I tunes will remember what you did on each pad, and will start from there the next time you plug in.

  • How can my wife and I be friends in game center if we use the same Itunes account?

How can my wife and I be friends in game center if we use the same Itunes account?

You can set up multiple accounts in Game Centre, sign out and create new account. You just need a different email address from any existing Apple ID's and a new password. You can still use the old account for purchases.

  • HT1848 How do I transfer the songs from my desktop to my iPad using the same iTunes account? I can only sync the other way. Thanks

How do I transfer the songs from my desktop to my iPad using the same iTunes account? I can only sync the other way. Thanks

    DaisyDoodle,
The songs on your Shuffle should still be in your iTunes library.  That means you should just be able to connect your Nano to the same iTunes library and sync it just as you would with your Shuffle. There is no limit to the number of iPods, iPads, or iPhones you can sync to one computer, iTunes library, or account.
As for preparing the Shuffle for your husband, just restore it via iTunes and then let him sync it to his own iTunes library or if its the same iTunes library, let him configure it to sync only his content.
Here are instructions on how to restore the Shuffle if need be.
