Imessage using email and not phone number

I have an iphone 5 updated to the most recent software iOS 8.1.2. I just switched from the iphone 4 to the iphone 5 yesterday. Right now under my imessages is says waiting for activation and it also will not let me use my phone number for imessages, it just uses my email. Sometimes my number shows up but it is greyed out and I cant select it, other times it is not even there. I have tried turning Imessage & facetime on and off to see if that would help, but no difference. I have also signed in and out of my apple ID and I have done a system Restore, and still nothing. Can someone please tell me what to do?

Hi lundq1aj,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that it can be frustrating when you are trying to activate iMessage but it never activates. Please use the attached article below for information on troubleshooting and resolving this issue.
If you have difficulty activating FaceTime or iMessage - Apple Support
When your phone number shows up under your Apple ID, it should be grayed out with a checkmark next to it.
Have a great day,
Joe

  • IMessage sending from email and not phone number.

When I send an iMessage it sends from my email address rather than my phone number how can i change this to being sent from just my number as when people reply they are going to my email and not my iPhone??

Go to your contacts and look up your own contact. To check if you have created an "I", which mean a "yourself" go to "Settings - Mail, Contacts, etc.". Under Contacts you will find "My Infos".
At this point you should see your own name. If not, press on "My Infos" and create yourself on your iPhone. (Phone number, etc.). If you see your name at "My Infos" press on it an check if you have typed in your correct phone number.
You can also go to Settings - Phone and look up if your number is saved under "My Number".
I hope this will help you.

  • IMessage using iCloud email and not Phone number

I have a friend who's messaging me using iMessage but it's coming from her email address instead of her number. I can text her number in a separate message and it will show up as a text on her side, but when she responds back it sends it as an iMessage from her email.
Anyone have any ideas or fixes?
    Thanks in advance

First see in https://appleid.apple.com if her apple ID is linked with her iPhone phone number, if not, modify and save changes, then in her iPhone go to settings -> messages -> and deactivate iMessage and activate it again (the phone number should appear in "Receive At" greyed out). Do the same in settings -> FaceTime. After that reboot your iPhone. Hope that works, it worked for me

  • Switching messages to go to email and not phone

My sisters has aiPod touch and when setting it up we share the same Apple ID and it asked if I wanted to use my cellnumber or email. I don't like getting her messages and her getting mine. How can I switch it so that it goes to the email and not phone?

Get you own Apple ID and use that for iMessage.  (You can share the same ID for everything else if you want.)  Go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your new ID.  You should then no longer get each others messages.

  • IMessage only recognize Apple ID / Email but not phone number. Why?

I have a small problem with the iMessage. My phone only recognize and auto detect the apple ID but not the phone number who are available for iMessage. Does anyone experienced the same problem?
These print screen below is 2 examples from my contact who actually available for the iMessage with their phone number.

i think i have found a fix for this its worked for me so its worth a try. You will need the other persons phone to do this.
    1) Delete the contact from your phone.
    2) On your phone go to Settings > Messages then tap receive at, it it has your Apple ID e-mail address at the top tap that and sign out this will remove your e-mail address from iMessage leaving just your phone number.
    3) Go back to Message settings turn off iMessage.
    4) Turn off your phone and back on.
    5) Go back to Settings > Messages and turn back on iMessage it will then reactivate iMessage
    Now for your friends phone
    1) Go to yourself on your friends contact list and remove your e-mail address if they have it saved.
    2) Go to Settings > Messages then tap receive at, if it has their Apple ID e-mail address at the top tap that and sign out removing their e-mail address.
    3) Go back to Message settings turn off iMessage.
    4) Turn off their phone and turn it back on
    5) Go back to Settings > Messages and turn back on iMessage
once reactivated on both phones follow these steps.
    1) Send a message from your friends phone to yours
    2) On your phone the message should come through and will have your friends mobile number at the top
    3) Reply to your friends message.
    4) Save your friends phone number as a contact again leaving the the country code (i.e UK country code +44)
    5) Delete the message between you and your friend on your phone then compose a new message and and select your friends number and it should automatically send as a iMessage send the message then go back to your contacts remove the Country code from the number and from there on then the iMessage will detect that persons phone number as a iMessage compatible device.
This has worked for me and 3 other of my friends who where having the same problem with a number of their contacts, it seems the error is more to do with your friends phone, when activating iMessage for the first time it automatically defaults to the Apple ID and in some cases causing the phone number not to register correctly with the Apple servers this step by step removes the e-mail and reactivates nothing but the phone number with the iMessage servers.
    Hope This Helps.

  • My iMessage send messeges from my email and not my number

My iMessage only lets me send messages from my email and not number .... I just updated to iOS 7. Any suggestions

Try turning iMessage off and back on again. That usually fixes it. Note, however, that heavy server loads my delay the reactivation.

  • Imessage sends from email account not phone number?

There are 2 receiving options for messages (phone number and email account) but there doesn't appear to be a send option. All my imessages are sent from email not phone but sms from phone. Can this be changed?

did you ever get this resolved?  I'm having the same issue...  I sometimes only provide an email address to people whom I wish to receive messages from so that they are not able to actually call my phone...  recently I've been hearing from friends who do have my phone number that all of a sudden my messages are being sent from my email address.  My 'start new message' option has ALWAYS been to send from my phone number.  I have always assumed that if someone started a conversation with me by sending to my imessage email address that when I respond to them and them only would it come from the email address...
    this has not been happening...

  • Imessages on ipad 2 only gives me email option not phone number

I recently bought an iphone 5 and have it set up for imessage. I then went to my ipad 2 and wanted to be able to send and recieve messages there as well.
It only gives me the option of having people contact me through email, if they know my email.
Is there an option or way of getting and sending imessages through my ipad as well/
Like I said, it doesnt give me the option to add a phone number?
I am doing something wrong, or is this the way ipad 2 works in regards to imessages?
    Thanks in advance!

I had done that yesterday...I just double checked, and 'magically' now it appeared on my iphone that my ipad will now also send / recieve imessages!!!??? Strange...
    Thank you!
    Seems to be working now...

  • Ipad air will only work with email address and not phone number

Nobody can FaceTime me or message me using my telephone number, they can only do it using my email address, how do I get my phone number to work on ipad air

    Do you have an iPhone?
You can only associate a phone number to messages and facetime if you have an iPhone.
The iPhone will associate the number it has to your Apple Id which in turn will make it available to Facetime and Messages on the iPad, assuming it uses the same Apple ID.
If you do have an iPhone, make sure you've activated Facetime and Messages on it so your Apple ID links to your number.

  • Why is my iphone sending messages from my email and not my number?

My phone will send messages from my email rather than my number. I have gone to the settings to switch it to send just from my number. When i do that, it does not send. What do i do to fix this problem!?

    Hello therealdeal333,
Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you're only able to send iMessages using your Apple ID (email address) on your iPhone. If you're not able to send iMessages using your phone number, first try signing out of iMessage and FaceTime on your iPhone:
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive, tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Go to Settings > FaceTime, tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
If you send iMessages from other devices (such as a Mac or iPad), sign out of those as well.
Then sign back in on your iPhone:
On your iPhone first, sign back in to iMessage and Facetime.
Sign back in to iMessage and Facetime on your other devices (if necessary.)
You can find the steps I quoted above, as well as more troubleshooting help, at this link:

  • IChat working through email address, not phone number.

I have an iPad mini and the iChat is being sent through my email, but I want it to be sent using my phone number. I tried to change it under settings, but it only gives me the option to use another email address. Any hints?

Assuming you mean the Messages app, you will need to make sure you have the phone number you wish to you verified on your AppleID.
BTW: adding the phone number as a send and recieve address doesn't change the Message app functionality. It still will not support SMS and you will only be able to message other registered iOS users.
