Import iPhotos Events into Photos and maintain previous structure?

I'm a long time iPhoto user and have about 45,000 photos from over a 30 year period that are organized into separate events with the event title being Year-Month-Activity.  Such as "2015-4 Easter".  It was painful to create those events but once they were done it was fantastic. We can quickly and easily pull-up all photos from my daughter's first birthday from 25 years ago, or look at all of her birthday photos. I probably have a thousand events and want to maintain that event structure when I move the library to any new photo program.
I'd like to use the new Photos program but when I imported the photos using one of my 'test' Macbooks ,Photos did (mostly) get it right and maintained most of the events in an album it created called iPhoto events.  That's fine for the legacy photos I'm importing.  HOWEVER as far as I can tell, from that point-on I can no longer add an Event and title it the same way in that iPhoto Events album.  So once I move my legacy library to Photos, the old stuff will be in the IPhotos Events photos and the new photos will have to be placed into a new Album.  So it will force me to split them.
Where this is important is when I point my Plex Server at them so that my extended family can view all of our old photos using Plex.  Currently I can just point Plex to the iPhotos library and it maintains the Events structure when it shows them on the TV.....which is awesome.  Family can see individual events and open just the one they want to see. Not sure how Plex is going to deal with the new Photos app but that's a question for me to post on their forum...
My question for this forum: is there a way to directly import legacy iPhoto events into Photos automatically so that each Event now becomes an Album in Photos with the old Event name?
Thanks!

Moments in Photo are the new Events.  There's a way to simulate events in Photos.
When the library was first migrated there was a folder created titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events are represented by an album in the folder. To open the sidebar if it's not open use the Option+Command+S key combination.
When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File ➙ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder
When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.
The downside to the simulation is that the Album/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can be sorted manually.
Ask Apple for more sorting options and/or other features in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.

  • Can't import iPhoto library into Photos

I updated Yosemite today which installed the new Photos app. It did not automatically import my iPhoto library. I was able to sign on to Photo Sharing, so those photos did import into my new Photos library.
My problem is that my iPhoto library is in my "shared" home folder, rather than my individual home folder. In order to open the "Shared" Pictures folder, you need to right click and choose "Show Package Contents" to see any of the files inside. When I do that via Finder, I see a Library file, but it was last updated in 2011. I assume that is not the file I need. But there are no other library files within that folder. I even tried to use "Open with..." and chose Photos for it, but nothing was imported. When I try to click the "Pictures" folder via Photos open library functions (when you open Photos, pressing the Option button), it is shaded out and unable to open.
When I open iPhoto, my library appears to be functioning and everything is there. But I don't see an option within iPhoto to export the library so that Photos may have access to it.
I just can't for the life of me figure out how to find the file I need to import into Photos.

You do not want to import the Masters folder from your iPhoto library into Photos. You will lose all of your edits, keywords, etc.
Instead move the iPhoto Library to your Pictures folder and make sure it's running correctly before trying a conversion. Run the First Aid procedures if need be.
Once you've confirmed it's running OK launch Photos with the Option key held down, click on the Other Library button, navigate to the Pictures folder and select the iPhoto Library to convert.
If you think you may want to continue to use iPhoto until you're comfortable with Photos make a copy of the iPhoto Library before converting.

  • Is it possible to to import Finder folders and subfolders into Photos and retain the structure

Seems like this is not possible but here's hoping!! I am new to Mac and have more than 100GB of photos sorted into folders, sub-folders then files. Since Photos is structured by folders, albums and then files, it seems logical at least that there should be a way to import from Finder without losing the structure. I have nothing against the new photos app, indeed it looks like it will be perfect for me but of course I am reluctant to recreate the structure and indeed the 'filename' to 'Title' conversion manually (this does not appear to be automatic either) for obvious reasons. Is there a relatively easy fix I have just missed or is it better to assume this is a huge oversight by Apple that they will fix in due course, to bring more customers into the Photos and presumably higher storage space, iCloud fold.

    Currently can't be done automatically.

  • Is it worth importing iPhoto Events Into Aperture?

I hear a lot of people saying to do this but is it worth it or is it just a space hogger?  My iPhoto library is roughly 60GB and my Aperture library is 90GB.  I keep my raw files in aperture and jpegs in iPhoto.

The latest versions of Aperture and iPhoto can both use the same library, no need to have one for each application.
With one library you avoid the whole space issue. Also I don't see a reason for keeping the Raw and JPG images seperated like that, each in a different application. It would be easier from a management standpoint to have them all in one library.

    Galdaplh,
What do you mean by "reverting to photo"?  "Revert" is not a function in Aperture so you must be talking about something else.
If you just performed the import of that many photos, Aperture will take some time to generate thumbnails.  You can see if it is doing this sort of thing by {Command}-{Shift}-0 to show the Activity window.
Once Aperture generates all its thumbnails, you will have nearly instantaneous access to much, much better thumbnails than Aperture uses immediately after importing photos.

  • Missing Event key photos and photo count

This is a question regarding the Library Events folder with the list of all events. I have approximately 560 events and 24,000 photos. The problem is with only 32 events within a date rangeof  four months from Feb thru June of this year that contained 41 events. 9 of the events scattered throughout that date range work normally. I can't identify a common denominator for either of the groups that work or those that don't. I can't think of any difference in the way I imported them or any other reason why some within that range don't work properly and some do. For some reason the last 8 events over the last 6 weeks have worked perfectly. I'm pretty sure the problematic events had shown perfectly for a while and that suddenly one day this situation started even for some events that already had been working fine.
The problem with the 32 events is two key characteristics, there is not a key photo for the event whether one is assigned specifically or one chosen by the program - just a generic black and white ghost image icon with a palm tree and sunset. The other issue is when hovering over the event icon and when it would usually list the number of photos within the event - in these 32 groups it shows only 0 (zero) but when I go into the event all of the photos are there - whether it's 1 photo or 100. I am able to assign titles to the events as normal.
Here are some things I have been told but have no idea as to the accuracy and thought I would put this question out to the experts before I did anything. One thing I had been told that was that iPhoto isn't equipped to hold this large a number of photos and to switch to Aperture but today I read something within Apple that says Aperture uses the same library as iPhoto.
Someone else had mentioned reindexing the library but I'm not sure whether to attempt that and what that means. I read in another forum and it was unclear if that would be a suitable course of action for me but that was a question someone posed regarding an ios device so it really wouldn't apply to me directly:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5123493?start=0&tstart=0
It occurs to me as I write this that perhaps I could just export these events of photos and then re-import them again.
I'm sorry this is so long. I'm trying to be thorough. After years of looking through forums for answers to questions that have boggled my mind - this is the first time I've ever posted a question. Please be gentle. Thanks!

That is as you note incorrect - the current versions of iPhoto and Aperture do use the same exact library structure and can open and modify each other's libraries - the current limitation on an iPhoto library is !,000,000 photos (I have not personally verified that)
It occurs to me as I write this that perhaps I could just export these events of photos and then re-import them again.
No - that would not improve anything and would lose data
What you need to do it backup your iPHoto library, depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild your thrumbnails - which may take several tries - if this does not resolve things rebuild the library

  • Referencing a single Iphoto Event into Aperture

    Hi Everyone,
I recently imported my entire iPhoto library into Aperture making sure that 'store files' was set to 'In their current location' so that Aperture would reference from iPhoto. This worked fine.
My problem... I recently imported a new batch of pictures into iPhoto and realized after the fact that my Aperture Library was now 'out of sync'. I then used the 'Import from iPhoto Browser' feature and selected the new event in iPhoto that I wanted Aperture to reference.
However, even though I have 'store files in their current location' still selected... Aperture copies the pictures from this iPhoto event into it's Library as a new project/event. Where am I going wrong? I would prefer to keep the originals stored in iPhoto and not have them duplicated into Aperture's Library.
I simply would like Aperture to reference them as it is doing for my other events that were originally referenced when I first set up Aperture.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    K

Simply, you can't. If you import Event by Event that cannot be used with Referenced Files, only managed ones. You can relocate the Masters afterwards, of course, should you wish.
Remember Aperture is not designed to be used with iPhoto, but instead of it.

How do I import my iPhoto events into Elements 11 Organizer and keep the events separate.  They are all named and I want all the information to remain with the event.

  • Import iPhoto events from iMac to MacBook Pro.

I have an iMac and MacbookPro. My iMac is the "mothership" of the two.  When I download photos or music, I always download it to my iMac.  In the past, I was able to transfer events from iPhoto on my Mac to my MacBook Pro.  For some reason, I can't do it.  In iphoto, the left hand colum, there was a way to transfer photos, but I can't.  How can I import iPhoto events from my iMac to my Macbookpro?

If you always import to the iMac then the simple way is to back up the Library on the iMac to the MBP.
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • From iPhoto. I simply took a PDF and saved it to iPhoto as a photo and then sent it as an embedded "photo" that was my document. Since changing to Lion, I cannot do it this way. Help!

I used to send embedded documents rather than as an attachmentfrom iPhoto. I simply took a PDF and saved it to iPhoto as a photo and then sent it as an embedded "photo" that was my document. Since changing to Lion, I cannot do it this way. Help!

I found the solution on another post by user rbii:
You can add this using Automator:
    - Run automator, select File->New, chose Print Plugin
    - From the PDFs part of the library drag "Render PDF Pages as Images" to the workflow on the right, set resolution to 200.
    - From the Photos part of the library drag "Import Files into iPhoto" to the workflow section.
    - Save the workflow
That should get you back this feature."
Save the workflow as "Save PDF to iPhoto" and you'll get that option back on the list. Hope this helps!

Imported slide show into PE11 and some pics rotated unexpectedly, How can get back to horizontal?

    winkhi
Just what are the pixel dimensions of these photos that are automatically rotating on you in Premiere Elements 11 workspace after being transferred there from the Elements Organizer Slideshow Editor? Do I have that correct? If so, how are you making the transfer....Edit with Premiere Elements Editor, Burn to Disc, or other as Elements Organizer 11 Slideshow Editor output?
What is the scenario...from the camera to the computer hard drive, landscape; from the computer hard drive to the Elements Organizer 11 Slideshow Editor, landscape; from the Elements Organizer 11 Slideshow Editor to Premiere Elements 11 Project Assets/Timeline, rotated to Portrait?
Do you find that the frequency of the problem is related to pixel dimensions, number of photos used? What is the format of these photos, jpg or other?
Are you using the Rotation option in the Applied Effects Tab/Applied Effects Palette/Motion Panel expanded to correct the photo rotation?
    Just some thoughts for now.

  • I have just imported Iphoto library into aperture library, can I delete now the Iphoto Library ?

Hi, I have juste imported Iphoto library into Aperture Library (did a copy) - can I delete my Iphoto library as I won't use Iphoto anymore ?
    Thanks Hélème

    Helene,
Both of those things you pointed out are mere *metadata*.
When you imported your iPhoto library, since you did a copy, your libraries are completely independent.
When I was in your situation, I moved my iPhoto library to an external disk and then went to the Aperture library to see how it behaved, even though i was 99.99% sure my iPhoto and Aperture libraries were separate.

How have you tried to do that?
You don't have to import iPhoto to Photos, you have to open she iPhoto Libray in Photos.
Either drag the iPhoto Library (not the application) onto the Photos icon in the Dock.
Or launch Photos while holding down the alt/options key to select your iPhoto Library for migration.
Where i your iPhoto library stored? On an external drive or your system drive?
