Importing MPEG-2 /IMovie Project

I have a new Mac Pro with FCE. I would like to import the MPEG-2 files that the Elgato Hybrid TV USB produces with minimal conversion; I can do that without conversion on the PC side, but I do experience sync problems. I get an error message in FCE when I try to import either MPEG-2 or iMovie project. I see mention of the Quicktime MPEG-2 convertor in posts about MPEG, but I also have seen a post that says that FC is shipped with the convertor. Do I need to buy the $20 convertor to get my high priced Mac to handle MPEG? It exports MPEG2 but doesn't import it?

FCE does not directly import or export MPEG2. If you have MPEG2 material that you want to edit in FCE you will need to convert it to DV first. Most people in this forum have found MPEG Streamclip does the job quite nicely. You will also need the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component if you don't already have it on your Mac.
If you have HDV material that is MPEG2, FCE HD will capture the material but it transcodes it to the Apple Intermediate Codec upon capture. Again, FCE does not work directly with MPEG2 material.
When you import an iMovie project into FCE you will need to render the clip's audio in FCE before doing any editing.

  • Cannot import other existing imovie projects

I believe iMovie 5 is suppose to be able to import other existing iMovie projects. When I attempt this through the import function on another iMovie 5 project (in this case a single clip smaller than 600mb) it say "Error:Quicktime cannot parse clip" it says a little more than this actually but this is the part that seems to have any relevance.
It does this with bigger or smaller clips. I am running Quicktime 7 and have all the updates in place
    .Anyone have any ideas.

If I read you correctly, you tried to import another iMovie HD project directly into a second project. You selected a project icon to import, correct?
iMovie HD can't do that, although the programmers forgot to tell iMovie HD. When we try, we get a "cannot parse" error. (The import dialog shouldn't allow us to select an iMovie HD project to import. It's a bug.)
There are other ways to do the same thing:
    1) Do a Save As to copy Project A to a new Project B. That duplicates the entire project.
    2) If you have an existing project you want to import clips to, you can Copy and Paste the clips from Project A to Project B. With Project A running, select all the clips, Copy, open Project B, Paste. Repeat for the audio clips.
Note that when Copying and Pasting try to copy all the clips you want together. If you don't, then any clips you copy and paste separately which share the same source file will cause iMovie HD to deliver TWO copies of the source file to Project B. That can hugely increase the size of Project B.
That occurs because Copy/Paste preserves the non-destructive editing of the clips. The Pasted clips behave just like the clips in Project A. A split clip can be restored to its original length, for example.

  • No sound after importing mpeg from imovie

Hello, i'm new to IMovie and i have the problem that all my video files made with my photocamera loose the sound when i import them into Imovie. the FAQ's tell me it is because they are in mpef-muxed structure. Can anybody help me with the solution on HOW to get my movies with sound into Imovie ???

I have exactly the same problem and took your advice, downloading MPEG stream clip. But it is not clear to me how to do this.
Previously I dragged the MPEG clips from iPhoto ( which played fine in QT with sound) into my iMovie and there was no sound ( as the OP describes).
So if you could spell out the exact procedure, I would be most grateful

  • Importing clips from iMovie project (they keep ending up in the trash)

I have never tried to import other clips from another iMovie project before and I just tried it yesterday. This is what I did:
-I went into the other project and clicked on each individual clip from that project that I wanted (one at a time).
-I copied that clip and then saved it to the desktop
-From there I copied those clips to my external drive (which holds the new project that I am working on
-I then opened up the new project in iMovie
    -I went to File<Import
-I selected the clips that I had copied over to the external drive
    -I imported them
-They all showed up fine, they played fine and I was able to edit them and put them into the time line as well
The problem I face though is after I save the project and exit, the next time I open the project, each of those clips are missing and have been placed in the trash
    What am I doing wrong?
Thanks ahead of time for your help!

It sounds like something may be preventing iMovie from properly saving the project on the external drive. The drive format may be wrong, or third-party software might be causing conflicts. More here:

Another possibility is that you are opening the wrong project file saved inside the iMovie 5 project. If your project was originally an iMovie 4 project converted to iMovie 5 that's an easy mistake to make. More here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=1971832
Note that the copy/export/import routine you used can be simplified enormously. iMovie 5 lets us Copy and Paste clips much more simply. To copy clips from Project A to Project B, open Project A, select all the clips you want copied to Project B, choose Edit > Copy, open Project B, move the playhead where you want to place the clips, and Paste. iMovie will import all the files that support those clips from Project A to Project B. Note that it imports the entire file for the clip, not just the clip itself. That's so the clip inherits all the non-destructive editing features it had in Project A.
To avoid Project B becoming unnecessarily large, it's important to Copy and Paste all the clips you want together. If you copy two clips at the same time that share the same file iMovie imports their source file just one time. But if you Copy and Paste two clips that share the same source file separately, iMovie imports the same file twice.

  • Can´t import files or iMovie projects, and are unable to view on the canvas

I have just gotten the Final Cut Express software, but i have unfortunately run into some problems:
The biggest problem I am having is all my footage no longer works. When I go to import it into FCE, it gives me the error:
"File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown."
This is also true for my iMovie projects: it gives me an error, and a list of the problems.
I can view the video in the viewer, but when I export it to the timeline and try to view it via the canvas (to see if it matches the music), it says that the video is "unrendered". Is there another video format I should be using that would enable me to view this footage with the imported music in the canvas? Or must I re-render every time I make a change (which I am sure I shouldn't have to!)? I'm very new to FCE so I do not understand it fully.
    Thank you!
    Morten

These are the properties of the files of twho of the camras i want to use to capture footage.

  • Importing mpegs into imovie

Trying to figure out how to import movie clips from my sony cybershot digital camera into iMovie. The files are mpeg's. When I try to import them into iMovie it won't allow it, although when I imported AVI files from my Cannon digital camera it worked fine.
Is mpeg streamclip going to help me here?
    Thanks

    Hi Tim:
    Yes, Streamclip will help you.
BTW-the latest version is now available. look at what Matti has to say about it!

  • How to simply import mpeg to iMovie '08

Could someone explain step by step how to import mpeg video files into iMovie 08 please?
    Thanks

Could someone explain step by step how to import mpeg video files into iMovie 08 please?
Open the file in MPEG Streamclip (free) and convert to DV, AIC, M-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264. (Multiplexed compression formats like MPG, MPEG, VOB, Flash, etc. cannot be edited by the QT structure.) MPEG-1 files can be converted by the base MPEG Streamclip application. MPEG-2 files require the $20 QT MPEG-2 Playback component be installed. iSquint (free) will convert either MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files without additional support but limits you to MPEG-4 or H.264 files. Visual Hub adds DV to what iSquint can export but is not free. Other applications like FFmpegX (donation-ware) or MPEG2 Works (pay-ware) can also be used.

  • How do I create a standard show opener to import into future iMovie projects?

I'm wanting to create a short boilerplate "show opener" for a series of videos I'm making on iMovie and want to know the best way to a) create it independent of the actual movie and then b) import it into future movies at the beginning and end of each show.
    Thank you.

There are several ways to do this.
The way I would recommend is to take a video that already has this show opening and closing. Select it in the Project Library view, and click FILE/DUPLICATE PROJECT.
Give it a name like Opening Tempate.
Then, when you make a new project, start by duplicating the template, give it a new name, and go from there.

  • Can I import an ios imovie project to  imovie OS X version?

    Hi!
I try to import an existing project from my iMovie for iOS to iMovie OS X but is not possible... I  send the project (for iOS version) from my iPad Air to my iMac  but then when I try to open this project in iMovie (OS X version) is not possible. The same operation was possible with the previous iMovie (2011) but now...
I want to know if I´m making a mistake or is not possible with the new version of iMovie for OS X.
    Thanks in advance
    Regards
    JJ

I too would like to see this feature! It used to be available in older versions of iMovie but was removed during a recent upgrade. While the current iOS version can export the project, the new Mac version will not recognize it. Apple: please bring this back!!! For DSLR owners, this is a great way to do a rough cut in the field then finish at home.

  • How do import .mpeg to iMovie

    Hi there,
just a question: how do I import a *.mpeg file into iMovie? I can wathc it by QT but the import is denied! Should iMovie works with QT for the import, so why it cannot import those files?
    Any suggestion please?
    Thank a lot,
    Mimes!

Interlaced Scaling and Chroma is defaulted for a reason
Yes, MPEG Streamclip author struggled with the Interlaced Scaling default a while back. He chose to default to Interlaced Scaling and put a notice to "Deselect it for progressive movies" (you did see that hint in the export dialog, didn't you!).
Progressive movies are a little bit sharper with Interlaced Scaling turned off (the difference is quite small, though). On the other hand, interlaced movies look TERRIBLE with Interlaced Scaling turned off if the vertical height is scaled!
...so there is a problem if the material contains interlaced AND progressive video. The compromise is to turn Interlaced Scaling on and accept that progressive material isn't as high quality as it could be. ...perfectionists will have to separate interlaced material from progressive and set Interlaced Scaling accordingly
MPEG Streamclip guide says this about Reinterlace Chroma:
"If you are converting an interlaced MPEG-1/MPEG-2 file, you may wish to "reinterlace" chroma. By checking "Reinterlace Chroma" you can enable a special remapping of 4:2: 0 chroma lines so they will be split correctly between the two video fields. This is a very advanced option: only professional users may see the difference in the output movie. This option is enabled by default; disable it when you are sure your file is not interlaced. This option has no effect if the source stream is not an MPEG-1/MPEG-2 stream."

  • Final Cut Pro X crashes when I try to import iMovie project?

I have a large iMovie project that I am trying to import into FCP. Every time I do (FILE -> IMPORT -> IMOVIE PROJECT) it starts to import, then crashes without warning, giving me a crash log report.
I am able to import another smaller iMovie project just fine, but the one I actually need to import doesn't work.
Both projects use video clips from the same event library.
Any ideas? Or in a backwards way, any ideas on how to recreate it in a fresh iMovie project to import into FCP? (I've tried duplicating it in iMovie and it crashed on import too).
(...I understand why there have been so many complaints about FCP now.)

Figured it out! After almost 24 hours, I cracked it
Let me give you a bit of back story...
I had an iMovie project that I had built on my Macbook. I just got a new iMac and installed FCPX on it. Was hoping to do some more professional alterations to the project.
So I consolidated the project in iMovie, copied it along with the files to an external hard drive, then transferred it over to my new machine.
Every time that I would try to import the newly copied project, it would get a few seconds in, then crash with no error message... just a crash report.
I was able to import a smaller project that used some of the same videos, so I knew that it wasn't a codec issue or something like that.
Then, through the process of trial and error, I figured out that when I had consolidated the project on my old machine, it didn't truly consolidate the files that I had used. There were a handful of still images that I had used in a different folder on my computer. So I copied that folder to the same path on my new computer, tried to import, and just like that, problem solved.
I guess FCPX doesn't know what to do when something isn't exactly where it's supposed to be. Hopefully in the next software update, they'll alert the user what the error causing it to crash is so that others don't have to waste nearly a day troubleshooting for one obvious (oops) mistake.

I previously made an iMovie project, but with the new version of iMovie (10.0.1) I cannot import the project. How do I retrieve and import my old iMovie project?

You have to upgrade your iMovie 9 projects from iMovie 10 before you can use them.  See:

  • Final cut pro x importing imovie project

I have iMovie '11 and am trying out Final Cut Pro X's trial version.  Final Cut Pro X will not successfully "import iMovie Project."  Two things happen: 1) It starts the import of the iMovie Project but only reaches the point where it shows video outline in dark grey with no acual video imagery and 2) shuts down Final Cut Pro X with a follow on option to "Report, Ignore" to Apple.  I've reported it, but would like to know if anyone is having the same issue and if there is a fix.  I have just the Trial Version to see if I wish to buy, but if functions are not working properly I won't buy it.

I have the full version and I can't get iMovie '11 projects to import into FCPX.  I have tried everything I can think of.  The import progress bar starts, then it crashes.  Anyone with instructions on getting in it please help.  I am migrating stuff to my new MBP and the iMovie stuff is recognized by the iMovie on the new MBP.  The iMovie events did import into FCPX fine however.
