Importing Video creates motion artifacts

After days of frustration with Final Cut Pro X (I'm a new user), I've run into a really frustrating problem I've been unable to solve on my own:
I start with an AVCHD video in m2ts format, which I then "repackage" to .mov or .mp4. Then, I import into Final Cut Pro, and since FCPX doesn't play well with this format, I use the "optimize video" option to convert to ProRes. This takes awhile, but mostly works.
The problem I'm having is that the imported video contains motion artifacts. That's really the only way I can describe them. Little squares of the video that appear in the wrong place all over the video when something on the screen is moving a lot. If there's nothing much moving, no artifacts, but then as soon as something moves, there's little squares that appear/disappear all over the video and make it look awful. I've tried converting the m2ts to .mov or mp4, then importing, but nothing I can do seems to improve it at all.
I should mention that the original m2ts plays fine, the converted mp4 or mov plays fine, but once it's imported, it's borked. I thought maybe it was just FCPX, so I exported, but the exported video still contains these artifacts, so it's clearly the import process that is breaking these videos.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I'm really at my wits end about this

Sorry, let me be more clear.
I'm capturing video from a tuner card from my XBOX 360 in 720p at 60fps. The resulting video is an m2ts file which cannot be imported into FCPX. The app I use to capture has a function to convert to mp4, but I believe it's just repackaging from m2ts to .mp4, because it only takes a second or two to perform. Also, I use another application which losslessly converts to .mov. This also only takes a few seconds which means I'm pretty sure it's just the container changing, not the video format itself.
If I import this video as-is, without converting it to prores with "optimize video", the clip doesn't render, and there are green frames all over it, and sometimes it causes FCPX to crash outright. After doing a lot of research, this is a well-known problem as this video format is apparently "frameless" or something (I honestly can't remember what it's called). Anyway, it makes editing impossible. I know if I was using a camera I could use the import from camera feature, but because it's a tv tuner, I can't do that.
I've tried every playback format I can think of. Full screen, high quality, better performance etc, it's all the same. Also as I mentioned, even when I export it, watch it in VLC or quicktime it has the same artifacts.
EDIT: I should also mention that I'm at work, but I can post an example when I get home if that's required. I was hoping someone knew what I was talking about, but I can get an example too.
Thanks
Jeff

  • Importing video created in Premiere Elements into Muse

Ideally we should be able to work in one Adobe product and transfer the work product to another Adobe product. I love Muse, but I am unable to export a video created in Premiere Elements CS6 into Muse CS6. The problem is that there is no export option in PE to create an SWF file .... the only video file Muse seems to support. I hope in a future iteration of Muse, it will take FLV files or that PE will be able to export to an SWF flie.

Read up on how to manually embed video players such as jwplayer or whatever. Merely a mtter of downloading the player skins and copy&pasting the sample code.

  • Imported video has "motion-blur" artifacts, but original is fine.

    Hi,
I've just purchased a Samsung SMX-F30 standard-def camcorder. I've shot a few clips and decided to test its compatibility with iMovie. iMovie recognised the camcorder with no problems and imported all my clips without any hassle. However, when I play the clips in iMovie if the clip has any motion, say an arm or hand being waved or head moving, then the image blurs in a way I can only describe as "interlace staggering". That is, alternate lines in the fram shift position left and right alternately. This is really annoying as you can imagine!
A few details about my setup other than the machine details below:
    Clips recorded in 4:3
    iMovie defaults when importing
iMovie version is 8.0.2 (I think)
iMovie imports to an external firewire 500GB hard drive
Clips not analysed for stabilisation after import
Camera records in "H.264/AVC Format" according to the manual
    Recording at approx 5Mbps
Camera was using built-in electronic anti-shake
I hope someone can suggest a few things to try as I've just returned to movie making after owning a Mini-DV based camcorder 10 years ago!
    Thanks

His book gives specific directions and more info on AVCHD with frame rates and bits...so definately buy the book. Your question: It kinda depends on your set up. Many people need to import into imovie 9 just so they can get an editable copy of the footage. So then you make your way over to the events folder and import the events into another program for turning it into progressive and de-interlacing it. You have to becareful because you will have duplicate footage.
He goes into details on how to do this. I have a different workflow because i import on a different machine using imovie6 since i am working with tapes. Then i convert it before i import it again into imovie. My DV footage doesn't get motion blur though so i am only doing this workflow to ensure no quality loss.

  • AE CS6 imported video shows compression artifacts

So I was trying to make a video from a lossy source that plays without any compression artifacts in VLC media player or Windows Media Player, but I noticed that during preview and RAM preview that there are many compression artifacts that are visible. Rendering and playing the rendered video in both H.264 and lossless would cause the artifacts to be seen in both media players.
I tried to make a new composition from the source but it still shows these artifacts. Rendering the video in lossless would still show the artifacts.
So how do I fix this?
    Here are some screenshots.
Here, you can see some very clear artifacts in preview.
This will carry over to the rendered video, no matter the render settings.
    The source plays just fine.
Creating composition directly from the source yields the same artifacts.

you can't fix what is broken in the first place. The artifacts are there in the first place and any additional processing and re-compression will intensify them.

  • Importing video in motion

I am having all sorts of problems with Motion, which I am using for the first time. I have a video which is 5 minutes long. It works just fine when I open it from its folder.
However, when I open Motion and drag the file from the Utility Pane to the Canvas Pane only 10 seconds or so of the 5 minutes video show up in the Timeline. When I hit play in the Canvas it go through those 10 seconds and then repeats.
    What am I doing wrong????

First you need to change the project duration to 5 min.  For now, go to the project properties (command-J) and change the durstion setting on the left to 5:00:00.
Next, you may need to change the play range. Place your cursor over the timline, and type comand-z, this will fit the timeline to show the entire project.  You will see that part of the timeline is grayed out.  On the left, of the time ruler, you will see a line going down with an arrow pointing left, this is the play range out point.  When playing back, if the playhead hits this and you have looping enabled, it will loop at this point.  Click and drag the arrow all the way to the right of the timeline.
You should now have a project that is 5 min and will play all the way through.

  • I imported video from a card into IPhoto and it plays in slow motion.  Any suggestions? Would importing into IMovie help at all?

    Hello
I am importing video and pics into Iphoto and the video plays in slow motion.  Would importing in Imovie help or does it have something to do with the type of camera or file the video is in?

It should. So they aren't shown in the Last Import smart album, right? Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.

  • When i create a circle in photoshop and import it to Motion 5, it becomes more of an oval shape than a circle in motion.

When i create a circle in photoshop and import it to Motion 5, it becomes more of an oval shape than a circle.even though the size of the document i worked in photoshop is the same as that in motion 5. which is Pal D1/DV 720 x 576.
    Thanks

    hi,
check the pixel aspect ratio in both the photoshop file and Motion project and make sure they match too. Or simply resize in Motion until round again. or even easier create the circle in Motion directly.

  • Importing a Flash Video created from a DVD file into a presentation

We have a DVD recording that we converted to various formats, including SWF, AVI and FLA/FLV.  We want to use our LMS to track who has watched the video so we hoped to use a Capitvate Presentation and the SCORM feature.  I created a new presentation and used the Insert Flash Video feature.  The Flash object appears on the screen but it won't play neither after publishing nor will it preview in Browser.  I can play it in a plain HTML file, so I'm pretty sure it's not a problem wth the FLV file itself.  I also tried using the Insert Animation with the SWF version and it just hangs up Captivate and still nothing happens.  Clearly I am missing some critical step for importing video and while I've scoured the forum, I just can't seem to find a solution.  Any assistance would be appreciated.

What version of Captivate are you using ?

  • Imovie won't let me create an event or import videos

I am trying to create a new event with imovie and when I do I get this box that says,
"The operation could not be completed.
No other information is available about the problem."
When I try to import videos (MOV or MP$A) it doesn't do anything. I select the video, click import selected, and nothing. It just stays where its at.
I am running the Mavericks version of imovie that was updated when I installed Mavericks.
    Any solutions?
    Thanks,
    grappler1999

Sorry, I misread your post - it won't even let you create a new event when you select File - New Event
Have you been able to update any old events and projects from iMovie 9?
Can you create a new project?
Do you have MacKeeper installed?  (It is known to interfere with the Share menu but I have not heard of it affecting event creation)

  • Video stutter and artifacting -TM700k video imported using rewrap2m2v

    Guys,
I imported a video shot in TM700 to my iMac late 2006 model running snow leopard, using the Automator tool of Alan Somersault -rewrap. While playing the resultant movie .m4v file I am getting a lot of video stutter and artifacting and the movie also quit couple of times while playing.
    Any suggestions on resolving this?
    Thanks

The movist application actually drops frames during playback to avoid the stutter you've described.
This of course is good for preview. The only other way (within consumer segment) is to get a computer which support hardware accelerated playback, i.e. a later Mac models. However, as hardware acceleration is early, stutter still occurs for some applications but that will improve over time.
If you want to go the free route, use Rewrap2M4V to rewrap the video files to a more friendly format and then use MPEG Streamclip to actually convert the video to a less compressed format.
If you want an "all-in-one" solution, try VoltaicHD for ClipWrap.

  • Importing video clips in AVCHD (Lite) into Aperture vs iMovie

I'm trying to figure out which application I should use for importing and storing video clips shot on my Panasonic DMC-ZS7 camera. This camera can shoot in AVCHD (Lite) or in Motion JPEG. I use the AVCHD (Lite) format to shoot the videos with this camera.
The two application options I currently have for importing video clips from this camera are:
    a. Aperture 3.5.1 (I'm not using iPhoto since I have Aperture).
    b. iMovie 10.0.1 (I'm not using Final Cut Pro)
When I first got this camera, Aperture 3 did not support the AVCHD Lite codec. Back then, iMovie could import video clips shot in AVCHD Lite, but it had to transcode the AVCHD video clips into AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec). Some time later, one of the Aperture 3 updates made it possible to import AVCHD Lite into Aperture (without having to transode into an intermediate codec), so we started importing our video clips shot in AVCHD Lite (together with our photos shot by the same camera) directly into Aperture.
iMovie 10 released in 2013 supports importing video clips shot in AVCHD Lite without having to transode them to AIC for storing these video clips in iMovie. So, now we have a dilemma that we need help with. Which application should we use going forward for importing video clips from this camera?
When I look at the metadata for the imported videos in Aperture, I see that the format of the imported video clips is listed as H.264. However, I can't seem to be able to find any information about the format in which iMovie stores imported videos. I can "Reveal in Finder" a video that I import into iMovie, and I see the size of the file and the .mov extension assigned to the file. With video files, the extension does not always determine the codec of the file, but in my non-expert opinion, the .mov extension is not H.264; I may be totally wrong here, though. What I have noticed, though, is that a video clip imported into iMovie has the file size that is about 10% larger than the same video clip imported into Aperture.
    Therefore, I have three questions:
    1. What format is a video clip (shot in AVCHD Lite) stored in Aperture 3.5.1 and in iMovie 10.0.1
    2. Which format (the one used by Aperture or the one used in iMovie) is better suited for transoding AVCHD videos into? The balance of the quality and file size is the main consideration for us.
    3. Which applications would you personally prefer using for importing video clips to and why?
I do want to use some of these video clips to make home videos in the future, utillizing iMovie. However, it seems I can still store the raw footage in Aperture and access this raw footage from iMovie to be able to create an iMovie project and a final home video. One of the concerns is that if we keep importing our video clips into Aperture, the Aperture library could grow beyond the size that Aperture can support and we may end up losing our photos due to the database corruption. Is this a real risk?
    Thank you!

I had the same question recently. Go to the right of this box and a little above, into the Search Discussions window. Type in this: Is MPEG2 the answer
You will find my question, and the great answers I got. Follow those directions and you will be all set!

  • Exporting Video from Motion - File Size????

I imported a video into Motion that was 363 MB....all I did to it was add 30 shapes (circles) overlayed for 1 second each at various points in the vdieo. When I "exported" the movie it is NOW 5.7 GB....I exported it in the same file format/resolution as the original I had edited in Motion.
Why is it so large? What can I do when I export to have it not be so large yet retain the same resolution?

When you use the "Export Movie" option the first setting in the export window is the codec.  Even though it says "Same as Source" all projects default to ProRes 4444, even if you have another codec in your project for one of the clips. Basicly the default, a lossless codec with Color and Alpha, this will create a much larger file.  If you want a smaller file you may need to switch to another codec from the Export menu.  Since you didn't indicate what your original format was (HDV, H.264, ProRes 422, etc) I can't tell you what setting is right, but H.264 will be smallest, but is not lossless.

  • Importing Template from Motion

I am new to Motion and having trouble exporting a template I made in Motion to DVD Pro. I used the built in travel template in Motion, added my text and video. Motion allowed me to save it as a template but DVD Pro does not see it (not highlighted) when I try to import it. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong.
    Thanks

Not sure what you are asking, especially RE: "DVD Pro
does not see it (not highlighted)"
You shouldn't have a problem importing anything you
create in Motion into DVDSP. But things like buttons
won't be highlighted (Highlit? What is the proper
grammar) until you create a button over the text
(say, for example, you add the word 'play all' or
'chapter' to a template you create in Motion...you
bring it into DVDSP..drag it into a menu as a
background...nothing will happen to the words until
you create a button that encompasses the words in
    question)
In DVD Pro if you try importing a template the folder that holds the templates will be highlighted, ie you can click on it. But its contents (the actual templates) will not be highlighted, ie you cannot click on it.

  • Importing .rtf into Motion for scrolling credits

I am trying to import an .rtf file into Motion (3) to create scrolling credits for a video, but Motion won't allow me to import it.

You need to copy and paste into a text object, but I'm not sure that rtf formatting support was added until Motion 4.
I would just create them from scratch in Motion.

  • Imovie 09 How do I stop Imovie from auto importing video from iphoto

Imovie 09 How do I stop Imovie from auto importing video from iphoto.
Hi I've done a lot of searches on how to do this but no answers found.
Imovie is beginning to become really slow because of the large number of video's. It takes 3 minutes to startup. Editing is sometimes slow lot's of spinning beach balls e.t.c.
I would like to only import the video I want to edit and hopefully get a quicker Imovie in the process.
My Iphoto library is about 95 Gbyte in size.
My mac has 4 gb ram and I use the internal disk.
Any other ways to work with Imovie/Iphoto are also welcome.
    regards

I won't get iMovie 9 till Tuesday, but based on what you said I may need to take some precautions. One reason I didn't like iMovie 8 is because it automatically imported everything in iPhoto library. What I'm going to do is create a new iPhoto library before importing the photos/videos from the camera. Or if you already have it in your main iPhoto library copy only the photos you'll use in your iMovie 9 project to the new library. Then start iPhoto while pressing the option key which will allow you to select the new iPhoto library you have created. Then I suppose that when you start iMovie 9 it will automatically import only the photos/videos from the new library.
