Incompatibility of 8.1.6 Database and 8.1.7 ODBC driver

I am attempting to connect to an Oracle 8.1.6 database using a 8.1.7 ODBC driver and MS vb 6 adodb. I can successfully connect to the database, but when I try to open a table, the program hangs.
In reviewing the trace log, the last few lines of the file look like the following...
VB6 118-46     ENTER SQLExecDirectW
          HSTMT 031C2000
          WCHAR * 0x030CDF50 [      25] "select * from BARTRESULTS"
          SDWORD 25
where "BARTRESULTS" is the name of the table.
I read a thread discussing incompatibilites between versions, and is this one of those cases? And if I need to be using an 8.1.6 ODBC driver, is there a way to uninstall the 8.1.7 ODBC driver, and install the 8.1.6 driver? I attempted to do this using the Oracle Universal Installer, and it didn't seem to work.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Any driver should work with an 8.1.6 database. You'll want the driver that corresponds to the version of your Oracle client (i.e. 8.1.5.6 on an 8.1.5.x.x client, 8.0.5.9 on an 8.0.5.x.x client).

  • Database Connection Error 42000:[Microsoft][ODBC driver for oracle] Syntax

    Hi,
      This is Sathish, I am trying to create a report and retrieve data through stored procedure using ODBC Connection. When connecting to the Stored Procedure it is showing Database Connection Error 42000:[Microsoft][ODBC driver for oracle] Syntax error or access violation' Error.
    CRXI R2, Oracle 9i.
    What do i do to solve this issue.
    Regards,
    Sathish

    Hi Satish
    It could be an issue with the driver.
    You can try with the OLEDB n Oracle native connection to test if the issue persists.
    Also you can refer to the [Troubleshooting Database Connectivity for Crystal Reports|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/boc/index?rid=/library/uuid/d05b3bb7-0f28-2c10-4ea3-84dbdc4e414e&overridelayout=true]

  • Oracle 8.1.6 and 8.1.61 ODBC Driver Access Violation

    Using Oracle ODBC for Windows to Oracle 8.1.6 database to get a list of the tables/views in the database.
    The following code worked on 8.0.4, 8.0.5, and 8.1.5 databases and their respective ODBC Drivers. It gives me an access violation with 8.1.6.
    The 8.1.61 ODBC Drivers was able to run the code once, but when I ran it a second time, it gave me an access violation.
    The access violation occurs on the SQLFetch somewhere in the middle of the loop.
    Here is the abbreviated sample code:
    SQLAllocHandle(SQL_HANDLE_STMT, m_hdbc, &hCursor);
    SQLSetStmtAttr (hCursor, SQL_ATTR_CURSOR_TYPE, (SQLPOINTER) SQL_CURSOR_STATIC, 0);
    SQLTables(hCursor, NULL, 0, NULL, 0, NULL, 0, NULL, 0);
    SQLBindCol(hCursor, 1, SQL_C_CHAR, sQualifier, sizeof(sQualifier), &indQualifier);
    SQLBindCol(hCursor, 2, SQL_C_CHAR, sOwner, sizeof(sOwner), &indOwner);
    SQLBindCol(hCursor, 3, SQL_C_CHAR, sTableName, sizeof(sTableName), &indTableName);
    nReturn = SQL_SUCCESS;
    while ((nReturn = SQLFetch(hCursor) ) == SQL_SUCCESS)
    // after a 100 or so iterations, it crashes
    nReturn = SQLFreeHandle(SQL_HANDLE_STMT, hCursor);
    Please let me know if there are other ODBC drivers I could use, or if 8.1.62 will fix this.

  • Help w/ODBC driver and Oracle 7 (and maybe 8)

    Hi,
    Can anyone give me some information about using the Oracle ODBC driver for Windows? I know that it is no longer supported, but our application uses the Oracle 7 (7.3.4) client to connect to an Oracle 8i server. I have some reports written in a MS Access front end that connect through the ODBC (Oracle 7 driver) to the server.
    When I run a query that takes a long time to return results, I find the connection times out whenever I use Windows2000/NT but is fine when I use 98. I also have this problem when I use the Oracle 8 client/driver and I am sure to remove the check from the "Enable Query Timeout" box in the ODBC setup. Again, even with 8, no problem on 98, but timeouts still happen on NT/2000
    Is there a known bug out there on this and is there some way to fix it?
    Thanks for your help and regards,
    Eugene

    The Oracle ODBC driver is certainly still a supported product. There are old versions (i.e. the Oracle7 driver that are no longer supported).
    Which version of the Oracle 8 client & ODBC driver are you using? If you're using a older 8.0.x client and ODBC driver, those may not have been certified on Windows 2000. Can you connect to the database with SQL*Plus on the machines where the Oracle 8 client & ODBC driver are installed?
    Is it possible that the user that's running the Access front-end doesn't have sufficient privs to the %ORACLE_HOME% directory? I know NT & 2000 actually enforce this sort of thing, where 98 doesn't.

  • ODBC driver for Cache (Intersystems) database?

    Hi, I am using Indesign to create catalogue pages and am trying to use the plug-in 'easy catalogue' by 65bit software to manage the catalogue data. The product data is stored in a cache database, on a windows server. I have tried installing the driver supplied by intersystems (makers of cache) but with no joy. (Had to install it through the terminal!) Anyone know of a way to connect to the cache database using a third party ODBC driver?

  • Setting up an Oracle ODBC Driver and Essbase

    Hi all,
    I am trying to retrieve data directly from Essbase into SAS (Statistical Analysis Software) by setting up an Oracle ODBC Driver and Essbase.
    I read this document in the below link and I was convinced that I could use ODBC to connect to Essbase, but our data administrator says that Essbase is an OLAP database and can NOT use ODBC.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E10530_01/doc/epm.931/esb_sqlint.pdf
    I am a SAS programmer, but I have no background in technical configuration, so I was wondering if someone can help me if it is really possible or not to connect to Essbase using ODBC.
    If it is possible, I have a follow up question...
    I followed this link below to do a set up and did so successfully before the actual step to add a new data source to ODBC driver.
    I should be able to select the TNS Service Name from the drop down list. This name will be that which I named in the TNSNAMES.ora file’s Alias = section, but I don’t see this option…
    It would be great if someone knows why I do not see this option populated under drop-down in the screenshot.
    Setting up an Oracle ODBC Driver and Data Source | Ten Six Consulting

    1) As I recall, the problem of returning 0 is caused either by an outdated version of the ODBC driver or of the MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components). Updated versions of the ODBC driver are available here on OTN and updated versions of the MDAC are available at <http://www.microsoft.com/data>.
    2) Versioning-
    To determine the version of the Oracle8 ODBC driver you should be using, simply match up the first three digits of the ODBC driver version and the Oracle client version (see chart Mr. Oehl posted). The 8.1.5.6 ODBC driver should go on an 8.1.5.x.x system, the 8.1.6.1 ODBC driver should go on an 8.1.6.x.x system. If you have an Oracle7 client, you'll need one of the version 2.5x Oracle7 ODBC drivers.
    Any ODBC driver should connect with any Oracle database. No need to match anything up there. You can determine the version of the database you're connected to by calling the ODBC function SQLGetInfo with the InfoType SQL_DBMS_VER.
    A little elaboration on version numbers
    - Oracle versions are generally 5 digits (i.e. 8.0.5.2.4, 8.1.5.1.1). The versions that you get on CD's are generally (always?) x.x.x.0.0 versions (i.e. 8.1.5.0.0, 8.1.6.0.0). The last two digits are incremented by periodic patchkit releases <ftp://oracle-ftp.oracle.com/server/patchsets/wgt_tech/server/windowsNT/>
    - ODBC drivers must report versions in 4 parts, each part having 2 digits (i.e. 8.01.05.05). Since we're lazy about typing extra 0's, we simplify this and just refer to the 8.1.5.5 ODBC driver.
    - The 8.1.5.x ODBC driver is built with the client libraries that ship with Oracle 8.1.5.x.x, the 8.1.6.x ODBC driver is built with the client libraries that ship with Oracle 8.1.6.x.x, etc. This is why I said above that you need to match the first 3 version numbers between Oracle client and ODBC driver to determine which to use.
    I hope this is more enlightening than confusing...

  • Logical Database and Logical Thing

    Hi,
    i want to access KONV which is cluster table and the field is KWERT.
    The thing is that i want to access it by taking customers from KNVV and giving it to VBRK (SALES Table). Now in VBRK i want to have a selection on FKDAT to get a list of Customers stored in the field called KUNAG.
    on VBRK-KUNAG basis i want to access the table KONV-KWERT.
    If i am doing queries then the System stops responding cuz it has got alot of overhead. So i tried to use Logical Database called VFV.
    If this is the best solution means using LDB then how to use it, can anyone help me with this. I tried it by Function module but it is showing all data without considering selection criteria.
    If anyone can help me then plz do answer or refer me to any web site so that i can figure this thing out. If anyione has got a good book on that then plz feel free to mail me.

    Thanks Shibba that was very helpful, i applied that but the system overhead was so much.
    can u help me with Dynamic selection code.
    I used FREE_SELECTION_INIT, FREE_SELECTION_DIALOG and then FREE_SELECTIONS_RANGE_2_WHERE to get ther Selections in one table.
    if u want me to send u the code then i can do that cuz i am getting so much mad that this work is not done yet.
    The Scenario here is that we want to take BILLED Customers and VKORG as Industrial Billing Customer and then taking VBRK and giving all these Customers and then taking selection on FKDAT range.
    Now after that the data should be collected from KONV-KWERT and i want to perform some calculation over it. I am using VFV (Logical Database) to perform this thing because i know that it would be very fast then applying my own queries.
    If you can mail me any book on Logical Database and Dynamic selection then it will be very Helpful.
    Thanks once again for being such helpful.

  • Reference to database and/or server name in '' is not supported in this version of SQL Server

    Hello all
    I am using C# and ADO.NET (native) - Visual Studio 2013.
    I am always using full qualified queries like "SELECT * FROM [database].[schema].[table]"
    Obviously there is a problem when doing this against SQL Azure,
    I get the following error: "Reference to database and/or server name in '' is not supported in this version of SQL Server"
    Interesting fact: With SQL Management Studio, the same query works.
    I need to know if this error is really a true one or not.
    If yes, I can quit using SQL Azure. I would need a SQL Server and not a partial SQL Server :-)
    Thanks and best regards
    Frank

    Hi,
    Here are my suggestions:
    1. Use partially qualified queries, because:
    a. from a security standpoint, you'd want to limit your login's access across the server instance
    b. in order to achieve a even better, you should specify your database as the Initial Catalog directly in the SQL Connection.
    If you take into account these practices, SQL Database doesn't come with any limitation from that point of view.
    However, in regard to 'With SQL Management Studio, the same query works', this is actually only partially true because if you run that query agains ADO.NET, you'll actually end up in switching databases along the query which is obviously not permitted in
    SQL Database since you're running in a hosted black-box version of SQL you're not managing. It's just like running the USE <dbname> command which obviously doesn't work.

  • Swapping between client database and web database

    Hi i have completed tutorials etc so can now create the
    sqlite database for my application which is downloaded by the user
    and will run on thier desktop so i am calling it the "client
    database" which contains data they are working with but there is
    another database containing identical tables which i am calling the
    "global database" the idea of this is to transfer data between the
    different clients and backup that information.
    so i am looking for a tutorial or a sample app where the app
    takes information from a web based database and copy's that rob
    into a sqlite database on the clients machine?
    this is the main problem im having and seen people mentioning
    blaze DS and stuff like that, ideally i wouldn't like to use PHP
    but atm is looking like i may have to.
    i will sell my soul to anyone who can help with this lol
    (also i am using FLEX 3.0)

    Hi,
    Yes, if you use LCDS everything is there already for you, so
    that you can complete this application in very less time. Since you
    want to use PHP, you can use Zend PHP, which will support Remoting
    using AMF. Using Zend PHP, write PHP classes which will help you to
    synchronize data between server and client and just invoke those
    from your Flex application when required.
    Hope this helps.

    How would I read the columns and data for $sql_output into an EXCEL worksheet. Where do I find these tutorials?

    Hi Q.P.Waverly,
    If you mean to export the data in $sql_output to excel document, please try to format the output with psobject:
    $sql_output=@()
    do{
    try{
    $rdr = $cmd.ExecuteReader()
    while ($rdr.read()){
    $sql_output+=New-Object PSObject -Property @{data1 = $rdr.GetValue(0);data2 =$rdr.GetValue(1)}
    $transactionComplete = $true
    catch{
    $transactionComplete = $false
    }until ($transactionComplete)
    $conn.Close()
    Then please try to use the cmdlet "Export-Csv" to export the data to excel like:
    $sql_output | Export-Csv d:\data.csv
    Or you can export to worksheet like:
    $excel = New-Object -ComObject Excel.Application
    $excel.Visible = $true
    $workbook = $excel.Workbooks.Add()
    $sheet = $workbook.ActiveSheet
    $counter = 0
    $sql_output | ForEach-Object {
    $counter++
    $sheet.cells.Item($counter,1) = $_.data1$sheet.cells.Item($counter,2) = $_.data2}

  • What should i do with an Oracle 11g Database, MySQL database and a dump file.

    I just joining to a new work field, almost about a database and i know "NOTHING" about this field.
    My company has a system that running by Oracle Database, the problem is that Oracle Database will cost a lot of money when my company expands.
    So the quest is converting Oracle Database to MySQL database.
    Of course i cant try to convert it in the main Database, so i create one Oracle 11g Database on my LocalHost, and it already actived in " Localhost:1158 " etc.
    I have another Sever test that already set up MySQL database, and a dump file from the system.
    So I want to ask these 2 questions :
    1. How to create an new Oracle Database from that dump file ?
    2. Is it alright if i use tool to convert Oracle Database into MySql, or i should do it manually ?
    Thanks alot.

    I predict that converting to MySQL will cost your company more as it expands. As you expand managing contention becomes more important - Oracle does this for you. I do not think MySQL does, so you'll have to write more code to deal with this, costing the company money. A big part of making application scalable and reliable is to use stored procedures, how good are MySQL's compared to PL/SQL's. What other features are there that MySQL has that will benefit your company that Oracle doesn't. What do you need to think about as your company expands that need to be taken care of in the database. I would have thought a migration from MySQL to Oracle would be more common to deal with expansion.
    As you know "NOTHING" you need to think about what each database can give you for the next 10 years to cope with you businesses potential requirements, and extimate how much it will cost to implement these requirements, then make the decision

  • How can i compare two databases and their tables

    i have a text.txt file then
    i will insert it into db_header and db_details
    db_header has tbl_pcountheader with fld_Rack_No(char) PK and fld_DateAdded(date) PK
    db_details has tbl_pcountdetails with fld_Rack_No(char) PK, fld_Barcode(char) PK and fld_Quantity(int)
    then i will lookup in db_products
    db_products has tbl_products and tbl_barcodes
    tbl_products has fld_ItemCode
    tbl_barcodes has fld_Barcode and fld_ItemCode
    now i want to make a prompt contains
    Rack No: Date:
    Counter No:
    Barcode | Item Code | Item Description | Quantity
    how can i fill up this by comparing db_details and db_products?
