Increase file descriptor limits on managed server
Hi,
we have an Admin Server which manages a managed server.
We need to increase file descriptor limits of managed server.
We modified the script commEnv.sh on Admin server and we successfully increased to 65,536 the limit. Here is the log of the boot of Admin Server
####<Sep 25, 2013 11:04:18 AM CEST> <Info> <Socket> <lv01469> <AdminServer> <[ACTIVE] ExecuteThread: '0' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)'> <<WLS Kernel>> <> <> <1380099858592> <BEA-000416> <Using effective file descriptor limit of: 65,536 open sockets/files.>
How can we do the same thing on managed server. We tried to modify the same script (commEnv.sh) on managed server but the file descriptor limits is still 1,024.

Thanks in advance
Solved.
It was necessary restart Node Manager after modify the commEnv.sh.

Stdio - file descriptor limits - Solaris 10
Hi
New to Solaris from HP-UX and we are porting an application.
I run into a problem whereby we run out of file descriptors - application is TCP/IP and file I/O intensive. Sometimes it happens, sometimes not.
It manifests itself as an error when calling setsockopt.
Increasing the file limits in /etc/system has not relieved the problem.
A google suggests there is a hard limit of 255 on file descriptors for 32-bit applications using stdio - does this still apply? Any workarounds?
Specs:
Solaris 10 01/06
SunOS saturn 5.10 Generic_118822-25 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-v240
Thanks in advance. What shell do you start the application from?
If you use sh/bash/ksh; type "ulimit -a" too see what limits the process will inherit from the shell, if the value for 'open files' is very low you can increase it with:
ulimit -n <new value>
for example;
ulimit -n 4096
if you are using tcsh/csh type "limit -h" to view the limits.
The values you set in /etc/system is the maximum allowed amount of file descriptors per process, it means that the process is allowed to increase its own limit of open files til that limit, but it doesn't mean that the process gets the highest limit automatically.

man ulimit
man setrlimit

Cannot increase file descriptors
Hello all,
I'm trying to increase the number of file descriptors of the system.
Currently with ulimit -n, I get 2048. So I would like to increase the limit to 8192.
I have added the following lines in the /etc/system file:
set rlim_fd_max=8192
set rlim_fd_cur=8192
These are standard lines I have added in other systems and after rebooting I always get the right value. But in one of the machines of my server room this doesn't seem to work. The machine is exactly the same as all the others: SunFire V210, Solaris 10 with Patch Cluster 31/10/2007
I have tried to reboot several times: init 6, reboot -- -r ... but I always get 2048 with ulimit -n
Is there any other parameter somewhere than can limit this value?
Thanx.Doing more tests... now I'm even more confused.
Rebooting the system, I connected to the console and saw that during the boot part, there is a warning about the /etc/system file:
Rebooting with command: boot
Boot device: disk0 File and args:
WARNING: unknown command 'nfs' on line 85 of etc/system
WARNING: unknown command 'nfs' on line 86 of etc/system
SunOS Release 5.10 Version Generic_118833-33 64-bit
Copyright 1983-2006 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All rights reserved.

Hardware watchdog enabled
Those warnings refer to a problem of the /etc/system file that I had in the past (when I took over the system), but I modified the lines.
They used to be just:
nfs:nfs4_bsize=8192
nfs:nfs4_nra=0
Later I added the "set" in the front.
Anyway, i changed the order of some commands and in lines 85 and 86 I have the following:
85 * Begin MDD root info (do not edit)
86 rootdev:/pseudo/md@0:0,30,blk
The mirroring lines.
So for some reason at boot, Solaris reads the old file. But I dont know which old file because it's been modified and I dont keep any backup of the original one. So, from where is Solaris reading that "strange" /etc/system file? It's definitely not the one I can see doing: cat /etc/system -
Overcoming file descriptor limitation?
Hello,
I am developing a server, which should be able to handle more than 65535 concurrent connections. I have it implemented in Java, but I see limit in file descriptors. Since there is no fork() call in Java, I can't find out what to do.
The server is basically some kind of HTTP proxy and the connection often waits for upstream HTTP server to handle the connection (which can take some time, during which I need to leave the socket open). I made a simple hack, which helped me, I used LD_PRELOAD to catch bind() library call and set Linux socket option TCP_DEFER_ACCEPT
if (setsockopt(sockfd, IPPROTO_TCP, TCP_DEFER_ACCEPT, (char *)&val, sizeof(int)) < 0) ....This tells kernel to accept() connection only when there's some data there, which helps a little (sockets waiting for handshake and request to come don't have to consume file descriptor). Any other hints? Should I somehow convince java to fork()? Or should I switch to 64-bit kernel and 64-bit java implementation?
I can quite easily switch to Solaris if that would help.
Any pointers/solutions appreciated.
Juraj. You can use dbms_lob functions to access CLOBS, so changing the datatype may not be as problematic as you think.
Also, in PL/SQL the VARCHAR2 limit is 32767, not 4000, so if you're accessing the table via a stored procedure you can change the column datatype to CLOB. Provided the data is less than 32767 in length you can use a PL/SQL variable to manipulate it.
Incidentally, use CLOB not LONG for future compatibility. -
Sync files across the Managed Server.
We have exploded war deployed in the Weblogic Cluster and in this there is a feature which would create a zip file in the exploded folder and this zip file will be downloaded through the URL. Now the problem in clustered environment is when the application write the zip file which will be available in only one of the managed server and when we try to download the zip file through the LoadBalancer URL it may not hit the same Managed Server in which the zip file is available.
Is there a way in weblogic cluster to sync the files across all the managed server so that we can access the file through loadbalancer.Hi Suresh
1. Your issue has nothing to do with the cluster setup and the way you deploy the application (as EAR or Exploded). Basically in your application, you generate a file and automatically that gets stored in that machines location. Now when you access it from a load balancer, the request may go to other machine and naturally it will not find the file there. There is nothing in the cluster setup or something that can copy the files and replicate acorss the machines. Infact that will be way too complex. I will couple of solutions.
2. Create a shared folder like public folder. Say in Windows, create a folder with some folder structure and map it as say X: Drive. now this X Drive can be accessed from any other machine like Machine1, Machine2 (after setting the sharing properties). First try directly from Windows Explorer itself. Now within your application, when you generate and store the file, refer this X: Drive with full path. You can make it more flexible by using a .properties file that has key value pair. Key is like FILE_LOCATION and value can be like X:\a\b\c. Now using simple Java Properties class API to load the contents from this file. You can add all the constants, check for if .properties file exist like that. Once you have all the properties loaded, then refer this key, to get its value and use that to store the file generated. Use the same approach, while retrieving the file also. Use the key to get the location and then look for the file you want to download. This should work, when the request goes to any managed server in the cluster. I used it. I created a utility class like MyAppPropertiesLoader, with some static methods, that reads the file only once, if it is null, and then get values using simle methods like getString(String aKey), getLong(String aKey) etc. The huge BENEFIT of this is, once you deploy the application say in Unix, natually, the shared location has to be one of the unix boxes. Then just mount this location on both the managed servers (mount is similar to mapping a drive in Windows OS). Also the location of the files can be changed anytime in the properties file. Say in QC, the location may be X:\a\b\c\qc. But for UAT on Unix it can be like /x/y/z/uat/. Now this .properties file can exist directly under the Domain root folder so you can access it directly without any path in your java code. You can also use System properties like user.home etc. Make sure to copy this .properties file on both the domains. The original master domain. And the psueduo domain that is generated when you run the unpack command if you have managed server in another machine.
3. This is much simpler but kind of not recommended. Simply, create a simple table with few header columns and one BLOB/CLOB column. Store the file in this database table and retrieve from it. This means you will have JDBC code, and the code to create clob to store and generate file from clob for retrieval.
My preference is the first option given above. Getting tools to copy files may be complex. Its not like syncing the data across but its the files that needs to be copied across the machines.

Does NSFileHandle manage a file descriptor
NSPipe * write = [NSPipe pipe];
NSFileHandle * writeHandle = [write fileHandleForWriting];
I know what the above does and how to use it, I just don't like using something without know 100% how it works. So just to clarify, does "[write fileHandleForWriting];" return a file descriptor that "writeHandle" manages or is it something more complex with Obj -C?Eric Lundquist wrote:

Yes. It is a plain file handle made more complex with an Objective-C wrapper. -

I tried starting the server from the console as well as from command prompt. Here I am giving the command below.
nohup ./startManagedWebLogic.sh bi_server1 t3://machineIP:portNo > bis1_startup.log &
But each time I got the same exception.
Korandla -
After LDAP Configuration Starting biserver1(Managed Server) is getting Fail
I have Configured the LDAP(OID) by following the Oracle Fusion Middleware Security Guide for Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition
11g Release 1 (11.1.1) (Section 3) Completed sucessfully with out any errors.. Users also imported sucessfully. after that when I am starting the biserver1(Managed Server) I am getting error like
"Server subsystem failed. Reason: weblogic.security.SecurityInitializationException: Authentication for user denied"
was taken from biserver log file. please find the below attachment for the same.
Please help me for the same

Has anyone managed to setup a WLS 7.0 Active Directory authenticator and booted
a managed server using the node manager? I can boot the server without the AD
authenticator and I can also boot the server using a script and successfully authenticate
through AD. My AD control flag is set to OPTIONAL and I have also setup a default
authenticator to boot weblogic - the control flag here is set to SUFFICIENT. This
configuration works fine with weblogic running on W2K, but not on Solaris (it
looks like the control flag is being ignored). Errors as follows

specific issue; on Win2K I had configured the 'domain root' remote start parameter
to point to an existing domain root and not a new directory.

This

(it
looks like the control flag is being ignored). Errors as follows

Solaris file descriptor question
Hi,
We have an application on Solaris 2.6 and
the shell in which the server runs has a
file descriptor limit of 1024. What does
this mean? Does this mean that every process
from the shell will have 1024 fds? What
is the maximum # of fds that a solaris 2.6
system can provide?
When I run "sysdef", I get:
ffffffff:fffffffd file descriptors
How do I interpret this line?
Is this 64K - some value?
If system limit is 64K and if each
shell has 1024, how are the fds allocated
to the shells?
What I mean is:
say I have 3 shells each with descriptor
limit of 1024, then is the distribution
something like 1024-2047 for shell 1,
2048 - 3071 for shell 2 (i.e. 3072) and
3072 - 4095 for shell 3?
Appreciate any explanation of this anyone
can offer.
thanks,
mshyamHi There,
About File Descriptors and Their Limitations:
All versions of Solaris (including Solaris 7 64-bit) have a default "soft" limit of 64 and a default "hard" limit of 1024.
Processes may need to open many files or sockets as file descriptors. Standard I/O (stdio) library functions have a defined limit of 256 file descriptors as the fopen() call, datatype char, will fail if it can not get a file descriptor between 0 and 255. The open() system call is of datatype int, removing this limitation. However, if open() has opened 0 to 255 file descriptors without closing any, fopen() will
not be able to open any file descriptors as all the low-numbered ones have been used up. Applications that need to use many file descriptors to open a large number of sockets, or other raw files, should be forced to use descriptors numbered above 256. This allows system functions such as name services, to work as they depend upon stdio routines.
(See p 368 "Performance and Tuning - Java and the Internet").
There are limitations on the number of file descriptors
available to the current shell and its descendents. (See the ulimit man page). The maximum number of file descriptors that can be safely used for the shell and Solaris processes is 1024.
This limitation has been lifted for Solaris 7 64-bit which can be 64k (65536).
Therefore the recommended maximum values to be added to /etc/system are:
set rlim_fd_cur=1024
set rlim_fd_max=1024
To use the limit command with csh:
% limit descriptors 1024
To use the ulimit command with Bourne or ksh:
$ ulimit -n 1024
However, some third-party applications need the max raised. A possible recommendation would be to increase rlim_fd_max, but not the default (rlim_fd_cur). Then rlim_fd_cur can be raised on a per-process basis if needed, but the higher setting
for rlim_fd_max doesn't affect all processes.
I hope this helps your understanding about systemwide file descriptor max limit in conjunction with shell and per process file descriptor limits.

Error configuring and starting Managed Server in WebLogic 10.3
Hi,
I am able to configure and start the Managed Server on windows environment. I am trying to configure Managed Server on linux environment. I am configuring the Managed Server with custom keystore. When I configured the Managed Server I specified the keystore/trustsote information in the Keystores tab of the Admin Console for Managed Server settings. Specified Private Key Alias, Password in SSL tab.But when I am starting the Managed Server from command line, I see the process looking for demo trust files and failing.
Here is the command I run to start the Managed Server:
./startManagedWebLogic.sh MyManagedServer1 https://localhost.localdomain:8443
Below is the console output:

Why is it looking for demotrust.jks file to start the Managed Server. We don't use the demo trust and cannot copy to the location it is referring to. I followed the solution provided at the below link:
http://serverfault.com/questions/106499/custom-trust-and-custom-identity-keystore-in-weblogic-10-3
There are 2 options given in the link. To update the boot.properties of the Admin Server and appending JAVA_OPTIONS to DomainEnv file. Both of these caused the failure of Admin Server. I couldn't bring up the server after these changes.I also came across posts talking about boot.properties for Managed Server. I don't see the security folder that has boot.properties for my Managed Server (verified it on both windows and linux boxes).
Thanks in advance.

Managed Server Monitoring tools for WLS 8.1 on linux
Our organization uses a set of locally written shell scripts to monitor the status of the managed servers in a WLS 8.1 domain installed on RedHat Linux 4, update4.
The main monitoring script uses the output of the "ps" and "netstat" commands to determine the process-id, server name, and tcp ports used by each managed server.
It is able to determine the name of the managed server by parsing the value of the "-Dweblogic.Name" parameter from the command line of the java command that launches the jvm that represents the managed server.
When a managed server is started, the command line resembles the following:
java \
-DLotsofVariables \
-classpath LotsofCpElements \
-Djava.security.policy==PolicyFile \
-Dweblogic.Name=NameOfMgdServer
The maximum number of characters displayed by the "ps" command with the wide (-w) option is 4096.
A recent addition to the class path has increased the length of the command line, resulting in the "NameOfMgdServer" being truncated.
It now appears similar to the following:
java \
-DLotsofVariables \
-classpath LotsofCpElements \
-Djava.security.policy==PolicyFile \
-Dweblogic.Name=NameO
This breaks our monitoring script because it is looking for a managed server named "NameOfMgdServer", not "NameO".
Each managed server is monitored by the WLS administration server and the local node manager.
Is there a way to restructure or rewrite the command line used to launch the managed server java jvm such that the "-Dweblogic.Name=NameOfMgdServer" appears before the specification of the classpath?
I can find no mention of the "-Dweblogic.Name" parameter on the "Remote Start" tab corresponding to each managed server, so it appears that WLS is building the java command line internally based on the contents of the config.xml file, before launching the managed server process.
I've considered adding an additional parameter to the java command line preceding the specification of the classpath, simply to identify the identity of the managed server, but I don't like this type of hack.
Perhaps someone else has developed a similar monitoring tool, and could provide some advice?

Hi,
I use ridc to check in file into Oracle Center Content server. There is no problem at the beginning. But after running for several days, there is following error.
I must restart my program to solve this issue.
Can anyone help me solve this problem?
Thanks,
Tony

Strange, because I did not have any problems before...
I did update my license file and I created an extra managed server

Very strange... I just re-updated my license-file, and now the managed

However, still the error below is shown in the console. Should I ignore it
(because everybody gets it) or is it something specific I really have to fix
before proceeding?

Managed server is not starting with MSI mode
Managed server not starting with MSI mode even though we enabled the managed server independence mode
Started the admin server and managed server first time enabled the MSI mode.
Restarted all admin and Managed server.
We have tested the following scenarios
scenarios1: Stopped the Admin server and restarted the Managed server with MSI mode it comes up.
scenarios2:Admin server is running but not able to connect to the managed server
In this scenario
we have removed the Network cable and restarted the managed server its throwing ldap error.

the managed server is pointing to jrokit_160_22_D1.1.1-3 jdk....the server has enough ram also...while running the managed server showing status 'STARTING' for long period of time...and the admin server health goes 'Warning' because of threadpool....when we stop the managed server then adminserver health becomes ok...
