InDesign importing Word bullet points - how to stop it?

Hi,
I'm having problems with bullet images when I import a Word document into InDesign. When I import a Word document into InDesign, it imports the Word bullet point in as well, overwriting the paragraph style I had set up in InDesign for lists which will use a specific bullet point. I've mapped the styles when importing, and it still happens. Although, there's a plus sign next to that paragraph style in the palette.
I found that InDesign creates a folder in Character Styles palette named "Styles for Word/RTF Imported Lists" and created a style called "Word Imported List Style1" in there for the bullet points.
Is there a setting I can select to force InDesign to use only the InDesign styles?
Any help/suggestion would be greatly appreciated!
I'm using InDesign CS3 (Version 5.0.3) on Windows XP.

I don't think there's any setting that can make InDesign override the Word bullets automatically, but there are two workarounds I can think of.
For lists already in InDesign:
1. Select all the text and choose Clear Overrides from the Paragraph Style menu. It's not an instant solution, especially if you have overrides in the text around the lists, but it does work.
For stuff you haven't imported yet:
2. Change your Word Import Options to include Convert Bullets and Numbers To Text. Your bulleted items will then have both kinds of bullets. Do a Find/Change to replace the converted Word bullet and tab to nothing.

    My instructions are specific to signatures.  If you know that it's not a signature then they won't make any difference.  Thomas A Reed has suggested another explanation.  Do you know that this picture is going out with your e-mails?  Have you seen an e-mail you sent on a recipients computer?  Try setting up a googlemail or yahoo account and send an email to it.  Does the picture arrive in the e-mail?

  • Importing Word doc to Book

    I am completely new to InDesign and after looking on the web and the help, I can't find out how to transfer my Word Document to InDesign.  I would like to have it sectioned into chapters and also put in the cover, the title page, and format each chapter with a title, start the chapter half-way down the first page, etc...
    Could someone please help me with this?

Moving the content from the place gun into the InDesign document is called "flowing text." Search Google for "InDesign flowing text" and "InDesign place text" without quotes for more information. Sandee Cohen's book, as mentioned several times already, is also a terrific guide.
    Although flowing placed text is straightforward, you'll face many small and large snags when moving Word content into InDesign. Search Google for "indesign importing word files" and "converting word to InDesign" for more.
    Note: I suggest the Google searches because they retrieve links to InDesign Help, Adobe forums like this, and to many other sources as well.

  • How to copy the bullet point format/style from MS Word to Pages?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm trying to make the swap from Mac Word to Pages but the one thing that frustrates me so much to the point of not using Pages is the bullet point system.
    In Word the set spacings are exactly how I want them - whereas in Pages, everything is tighter - there is less space between the margin and the point, the point and the text etc.
    I've painstakingly inserted all the spacings from Word into Pages and saved it as a "style" but it just reverts back to the default positioning when I open up a new document and select my saved style.
    Any ideas / a magic tool to just copy the style from Word? It's such a shame because Pages is a much slicker programme than Word and I really want to use it but as a student, bullet points are my world.

    Hi Peter, thanks for your reply.
    Yeah I get the font and formatting for the text copied no problem when copying but I'm talking about from scratch in a new document, I insert a bullet point and even when selecting my saved style, it just reverts back to the default.
    I agree, massive pain. It is the only thing stopping me from making the full switch now iCloud Drive is getting close to Dropbox.
    Am I a misguided fool for thinking there's a patch or modification of some description that can copy the default bullet spacings from Word and create a new style following them in Pages?

    lots of my users copy and paste from MS Word documents into a
    text area
    my app takes that form.textarea data and inserts it in a
    MYSQL db.
    when we output that cell from the db, we often find there are
    ? [question marks] where there once were special characters in the
    Word doc text.
    it seems that bullet points in word docs are the worst
    offenders.
    each time i spot a new one i try to find out the chr() number
    for it and make a substitiution before the text is stored in the
    db, but its a bit hit and miss (relies on me spotting it) and its v
    time consuming
    ive tried using functions safetext and demoronize - but they
    dont seem to do what i need
    im sure im not the first person to run into this - any
    suggestions anyone?

  • Can no longer import Word files into InDesign

    For many months I have been importing Word files into InDesign CS3 (Mac OSX 10.4.11) with no trouble, but I started having a problem yesterday.
    When importing a 17-page Word file with 16 footnotes, I got none of the text and only the footnote numbers. This is what I get in InDesign:

    These are the things I've tried already: restarting, deleting preferences, changing the import options, using CS2, importing someone else's Word file, importing a Word file that I imported successfully a couple of months ago. None of this works.
    It has been suggested that I save the Word file as rtf, but since I have 200 files to import and I'm using Word's character styles for italics, bold, small caps, etc., I'd rather try to fix this problem.
    Can someone help?

    I am using indesign CS2 and i'm trying to import a Word document into a new chapter for a book i'm laying out. it's about 30 pages, but there are at least 80 foot notes. i'm able to get about 1/2 of the document with the footnotes to flow correctly, then EVERYTHING disappears. the only way i've been able to get the remaining text to appear is by adding characters to the text. i'll hit "vvvvvvvvvvvv" a bunch of times and "magically" a little chunk of text and it's footnotes appears. then the ole disappearing act happens. so i do it again. i'm able to get all the text to appear finally, but when i delete the "vvvvvvvvvv" from the places i inserted them, the text disappears again. i have no idea why this is happening or how to fix it. any ideas?

  • Issues importing word into indesign and keeping notes/superscripts

    I have a job coming up where I will need to import word documents into indesign that come from various sources.
    I did some web surfing and discovered I should be able to do it by placing the word document into my template. It seemed to work when I first tried it, but I have now discovered that only the first few notes have from through (first 14 to be precise). Then the numbers disappear (and are replaced by soft returns) until note 33 where they jump back in. But of course this starts at the next number missing, so in this case 15. Which of course means all the numbers are out of order and so need to be fixed.
    I would just input or fix manually but as I have 15 stories place and format and the first one has 95 notes... I am hoping to find a less time consuming solution.
    I am guessing it is something in how the author has edited the word document, but I truly have no idea.
    Any suggestions as best way to overcome this? Ideally something I can ask the authors to fix. Or is there something in the import options?
    I am about to get EXTREMELY desperate with this issue.

    I have a Word document which contains hyperlinks but when I import Word document into InDesign all of my hyperlinks are missing.
    Can you please let me know how can I retain hyperlinks such that when I export to PDF I can able to retain it. Please advise.

    I don't think it's possible to remove hyperlinks when Placing. Do you
    see your hyperlinks in the Hyperlinks palette (I think Window >
    Interactive > Hyperlinks, but I'm looking at CS3 now)?

    This is not really true. You should be able to see each hyperlink in ID
    as text with a box around it. You can test a link in ID by pressing the
    right arrow in the palette (Go to hyperlink destination). In this
    respect they are active in ID, and you can keep them active by including
    hyperlinks when you export PDF.
    Acrobat interprets (poorly, IMO) certain text combinations as
    hyperlinks. So text that looks like a URL may be displayed in Acrobat as
    a link, even if it's not a valid link. You can turn this on or off in
    Acrobat with Preferences > General > Automatically detect URLs from
    text. This has nothing to do with ID hyperlinks.

    I have this magazine I design a few times a year and the articles are sent to me as word-files with tables they have to fill in in order to know who the author is, what the title will be etc.
    I would like to find a way to easily import the content of their articles etc. in Indesign and I found out that importing Word files is simple as goodbye. Me happy!
    But now I constantly have to copy-paste their article text out of the table and paste it elsewhere in the InDesign file, so I thought: isn't there a possibility to, while importing the word file, select what styles should be imported (so that the instructions I put in the template for their word articles for instance won't be put into the InDesign file but only the forms they fill in) or can I setup the importing of it to only import the form field text (if the word file would be set up as a form with protected items fields they can fill in?).

    On my previous Mac (long, sad story) I had Office for Mac and liked it a lot.  I was collaberating on some fairly complex legal documents, and never noticed any compatibility problems with Windows Office.  That said, it is expensive.  For most documents, I simply open the Word document in Pages and export it to Word when I am finished.  I sometimes get the message that there is a missing font, but the computer uses a substitute that is quite acceptable.  I have never had someone say that they had difficulty with a document I exported to Word.
    Numbers and Excel aren't as compatible in my experience, and I have gotten some surprises when I hadn't tweaked the settings properly when exporting to Excel.
    The other component of iWork is Keynote, and I like it much better than Powerpoint; to me it is just easier to use. I have never tried converting back and forth between Keynote and Powerpoint.
    Depending on what grade your kids are in and what they are doing, I think I would start off with iWork and see what, if any, problems they encounter.  Of course, if they are going to use the computer for a class in Office or its components, your kids are going to need a Windows machine with Windows Office, because Office for Mac is enough different that when the teacher says, "Now, move your mouse here and click on....", your kids are going to be lost.

    Recenty my MBPro has started opening MS Word and Messages at startup and I can't figure out how to stop it?  I've tried selecting and de-selcting the startup option from the dock but this doesn't help.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

    System Preferences has a setting for this.
    In the Users & Groups section you will fine a "Login Items" header.  This is a list of all the programs that will open automatically when you log in.  You can select any program and click the [--] button below that window to stop the program from opening automatically.

    If you absolutely must have the Microsoft applications, you can purchase and download them from http://microsoft.com/mac.
    Free software suites LibreOffice and OpenOffice offer similar functionality (word processing and spreadsheets).
    Or you could do worse than look at Apple's Pages, Numbers and Keynote, which should already be installed in your Mac and can export to Microsoft formats if need be.

  • External Hard Drives - how to stop LR3.3 wanting to import.

    I have 3 external hard drives which I use for backing up pictures and other folders. Whenever I plug one of them in, LR opens the Import dialog, even though I have auto import switched off. It's not serious, but it is annoying! Can anyone tell me how to stop it doing this?

    Try the following:
    In <My Computer> right-click the external drive, in the dialog box click on <Properties>, and on the <Autoplay> tab. Select <Pictures> and Make <Select an Action to perform> active by clicking on the radio button. Scroll down the list and make sure that <LR import photos> is NOT selected. Or select <Take no action>.
