Insert file in db column

Hi all
i'm not very experienced in p-sql so i have an answer.
Scenario: Open VMS System with Oracle 9
Problem : i want to insert a text file in the db by calling a procedure from Pro Cobol
I see that is possible to pass the url and read the file with dbms, but i don't understand, after i read the file, how i can insert it.
Any suggestion?

Does this file reside on a file server or does this file is transmitted by the calling procedure with a CLOB datatype (i don't speak about the name, but the content :-)) ?The file is transmitted by the calling procedure, the problem is that i can only pass the file path because i haven't a file object or similar.
Another solution can be to use SQL*Loader to load the files OR if you simply want to give an access to a file to a PL/SQL program you also have the option to use BFILE: but in this last solution file are not stored inside the DB (it's only a 'reference' or let's say a pointer to this file) : It depends on your need: what will you do once the file file be accessible/loaded in the DB?So, i have this Pro Cobol program that create some files that will be inserted into db, then a Java-Client application read this blob and show it in a pdf format.
How many file did you plan to use? Is it something done one time or is it something done "on demand" by a user for example? ...Are about 1000 files one time at week, and are inserted at the end of users operation so the procedure can be called many times.
i see the link and i think i can use one of this solution:
create or replace procedure insert_test(test_id in integer, filename in varchar) IS
l_bfile bfile;
begin
l_bfile := bfilename('MNT_TEST', filename);
insert into bfile_test (id, bfile_data) values (test_id, l_bfile);
end;
OR
create or replace procedure insert_test(test_id in integer, filename in varchar) IS
declare
l_blob blob;
l_bfile bfile;
begin
insert into demo values ( 1, empty_blob() )
returning theBlob into l_blob;
l_bfile := bfilename( 'MY_FILES', filename );
dbms_lob.fileopen( l_bfile );
dbms_lob.loadfromfile( l_blob, l_bfile,
dbms_lob.getlength( l_bfile ) );
dbms_lob.fileclose( l_bfile );
end;
I think the best is the secon,isn't it?
Can it be a good solution for me?
Another problem is that the database can't be on the same server of the ProCobol program but in another machine with different OS like Windows, how i can do in this case?

  • Connection reset when inserting file to BLOB column

    Friends,
    When inserting a file to a BLOB clomun and the file is more than 1KB, I receive the following message: java.sql.SQLException: Io exception: Connection reset
    The code is this:
    int fileLength = (int)file.length();
    System.out.println("File length: "+fileLength);
    int cod = (int)(Math.random() * 1000);
    String sql = "INSERT INTO BLOB_TABLE VALUES(?,?)";

    pstmt.setInt(1, cod);
    pstmt.setBinaryStream(2, fis, fileLength);
    pstmt.executeUpdate();
    System.out.println("File insert sucess!");
    connection.close();
    Does anybody know what this can be? My database is oracle.
    Thanks!

    When you create objects on the database they are stored in the data dictionary by default in UPPER case.
    So in this line:
    src_loc bfile := bfilename('example_lob_dir', 'example.gif'); -- source location
    you need to reference the name of the directory object in upper case. e.g.
    src_loc bfile := bfilename('EXAMPLE_LOB_DIR', 'example.gif'); -- source location
    ;)

  • How to read/write .CSV file into CLOB column in a table of Oracle 10g

    I have a requirement which is nothing but a table has two column
    create table emp_data (empid number, report clob)
    Here REPORT column is CLOB data type which used to load the data from the .csv file.
    The requirement here is
    1) How to load data from .CSV file into CLOB column along with empid using DBMS_lob utility
    2) How to read report columns which should return all the columns present in the .CSV file (dynamically because every csv file may have different number of columns) along with the primariy key empid).
    eg: empid report_field1 report_field2
    1 x y
    Any help would be appreciated.

    If I understand you right, you want each row in your table to contain an emp_id and the complete text of a multi-record .csv file.
    It's not clear how you relate emp_id to the appropriate file to be read. Is the emp_id stored in the csv file?
    To read the file, you can use functions from [UTL_FILE|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14258/u_file.htm#BABGGEDF] (as long as the file is in a directory accessible to the Oracle server):
    declare
        lt_report_clob CLOB;
        l_max_line_length integer := 1024;   -- set as high as the longest line in your file
        l_infile UTL_FILE.file_type;
        l_buffer varchar2(1024);
        l_emp_id report_table.emp_id%type := 123; -- not clear where emp_id comes from
        l_filename varchar2(200) := 'my_file_name.csv';   -- get this from somewhere
    begin
       -- open the file; we assume an Oracle directory has already been created
        l_infile := utl_file.fopen('CSV_DIRECTORY', l_filename, 'r', l_max_line_length);
        -- initialise the empty clob
        dbms_lob.createtemporary(lt_report_clob, TRUE, DBMS_LOB.session);
        loop
          begin
             utl_file.get_line(l_infile, l_buffer);
             dbms_lob.append(lt_report_clob, l_buffer);
          exception
             when no_data_found then
                 exit;
          end;
        end loop;
        insert into report_table (emp_id, report)
        values (l_emp_id, lt_report_clob);
        -- free the temporary lob
        dbms_lob.freetemporary(lt_report_clob);
       -- close the file
       UTL_FILE.fclose(l_infile);
    end;This simple line-by-line approach is easy to understand, and gives you an opportunity (if you want) to take each line in the file and transform it (for example, you could transform it into a nested table, or into XML). However it can be rather slow if there are many records in the csv file - the lob_append operation is not particularly efficient. I was able to improve the efficiency by caching the lines in a VARCHAR2 up to a maximum cache size, and only then appending to the LOB - see [three posts on my blog|http://preferisco.blogspot.com/search/label/lob].
    There is at least one other possibility:
    - you could use [DBMS_LOB.loadclobfromfile|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14258/d_lob.htm#i998978]. I've not tried this before myself, but I think the procedure is described [here in the 9i docs|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/appdev.920/a96591/adl12bfl.htm#879711]. This is likely to be faster than UTL_FILE (because it is all happening in the underlying DBMS_LOB package, possibly in a native way).
    That's all for now. I haven't yet answered your question on how to report data back out of the CLOB. I would like to know how you associate employees with files; what happens if there is > 1 file per employee, etc.
    HTH

    Is the server running Java 1.4? If it is Java 5 or higher there is no need to keep using OJDBC14, you can upgrade to OJDBC5.
    If you cannot do that, then I ask you: why make this post? What are you expecting someone to do? Your problem is with the OJDBC driver, you are not going to get tech support for it in this Java programming forum.

  • Getting row count of file into table column

    Hi experts,
    I want to insert the row count of the file into a table column for generating a summary file containing the detials of all the files generated for the day along with the row count and also for audit purpose.
    My design is to create table in the summary file format & update the data's in it then using OdiSqlUnload to generate the required summary file, for this purpose I need to insert the row count of the file generated.
    I tried to get the row count using the http://odiexperts.com/get-file-length-and-header-in-operator post. But passing the "lines" value into a ODI variable or inserting into a table column is not working.
    Please help or suggest what can be done to achive the above scenario.
    Thanks in advance.

    There are a few excellent examples at :- COUNT

  • Inserting file path/filename

    Hi, all out there,
    I've just strated using Pages '08, and exploring it. But Pages Help and User Guide do not tell me how to insert the file path or filename in the footer, so that it's automatically updated whenever changed. It's not in the Insert menu, and cannot find it in Insert > Function.

    Hi Peggy,
    Though that feature is useful isn't found in 10.4.10. The Devon Technologies WordService ReadMe file has the following:
    Insert:
    Contents Of Path
    Inserts files and folders of the selected path (tilde is expanded)
    and of all its subdirectories (e.g. select the path '~/' and this function
    will insert all contents of your home directory)
    Short Date Cmd-'{'
    Inserts the current date (no text selection necessary)
    Long Date Cmd-'}'
    Inserts the current date (no text selection necessary)
    Short Date & Time Cmd-'_'
    Insert the current date & time (no text selection necessary) Long Date & Time Cmd-'%'
    Insert the current date & time (no text selection necessary) Time
    Insert the current time (no text selection necessary)
    Maybe that's what you're seeing in your services menu perhaps.
    Sincerely,
    RicD

  • How to insert data in a column with uniqueidefier data type

    Guys,
    I need insert data in a column with uniqueidefier data type, when i am trying to that getting error.
    error message says: "Conversion failed when converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier."
    I have data in table a col1,col2,col3,col4 - col3,col4 has datatype as varchar and i am updating table b columns col1,col2 with table a col3 and col4.
    Please guide how to do it.

    Hi,
    Not any String can be convert to uniqueidentifier.
    1. you have to make sure u use a value which is fir to be uniqueidentifier
    2. Use convert or cast in the insert query in order to convert the string into uniqueidentifier
    insert X ... convert(uniqueidentifier, 'string which fit to be convert to uniqueidentifier')
    Please post DDL+DML for more specific help
    DDL = Data Definition Language. In our case that is, CREATE TABLE statements for your tables and other definitions that are needed to understand your tables structure and there for let us to test and reproduce the problem in our server. Without DDL no one
    can execute any query.
    How to get DDL: Right click on the table in Object Explorer and select script table as CREATE. Post these create table scripts here.
    DML = data manipulation language is a family of queries used for manipulating the data it self like: inserting, deleting and updating data. In our case we need some sample data in order to check the query and get result, so we need some indert query for
    sample data.
    If you post a "create query" for the tables and "insert query" with some sample, then we could help you without Assuming/Guessing. There is a reason that DDL is generally asked for and expected when discussing query problems - it helps
    to identify issues, clarify terminology and prevent incorrect assumptions.  Sample data also provides a common point of reference for the discussion. A script that can be used to illustrate or reproduce the issue you have, will encourage others to help.

  • Pages 5: Insert File Name

    How do I insert the File Name? How do I update an old File Name that was previously inserted?
    It's common practice to insert the document name in the footer of document, so people reading the document know what version the file was printed from. This was easily handled in the past version of Pages by going to the "Insert" menu and selecting "File Name". If you later modified a document, you could righ click on the inserted document name and the contextual menu would offer you the option to "Update File Name".
    Pages 5 seems to be missing this functionality. The software help instructions offer zero mention of Insert File Name.
    Has this been removed? If so, that's crazytown. If not, I'd sure appreciate being explained how to use this important feature.
    Thank you!

    Tell Apple and Apple's users by rating/reviewing Pages 5 in the App Store.
    Apple tries to clear out the bad reviews but with every new version they keep sinking lower and lower.
    In the Australian M.A.S. it is getting almost 3/4 saying they don't like it, with almost 3/5ths saying they hate it. Worse than the previous v5.0.
    I assume there were some who just quickly looked at it and didn't know what Apple had done. A few bad files and intractable problems later, and they are starting to wake up.
    The problem with the reviews is that mostly people do it on first impressions and they can't go back and correct their review in the light of experience, until the next version comes out.
