Insert Stmt behaving differently within a PL/SQL block than independently

I have an INSERT INTO statement that is behaving different within a PL/SQL block than it does if ran as an independent SQL query. When executed within a PL/SQL block the INSERT statement does insert rows, but only less than 50% of the rows returned by the SELECT statement used by the INSERT. There are no constraints and the only check on the destination table is a NOT NULL for supplier_id column.
BEGIN
    INSERT INTO suppliers (supplier_id, supplier_name)
    SELECT account_no, name FROM customers WHERE city = 'Newark';
END;Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks

Thought this sounded familiar:

    begin

  • Encountering transaction statement from within a PL/SQL block

    Hi All,
    i would like to know what will be the transaction status if we use an commit or a rollback statement inside a PL/SQL procedure called from within an PL/SQL package.
    For example
    BEGIN
    select statement
    insert statement 1
    .... call to <xyz> procedure
    end;
    xyz procedure
    insert statement 2
    commit/rollback
    end of procedure
    will the insert statement 1 be commited/rollbacked when the session encounters the transaction statement inside the procedure.

    Welcome to the forum!
    Unless the procedure xyz is an autonomous transaction, then yes Insert statement 1 will be committed.

  • Can't create a sequence within a pl/sql block with execute immediate.

    Hi All. I created a user and granted it the 'create sequence' privilege though a role. In a pl/sql block I try to create a sequence using 'execute immediate' but get a 1031-insufficient privileges error. If I grant create sequence directly to the user, the pl/sql block completes successfully. Can anyone explain this behavior? We're running 11.2 Enterprise Editon.
    Thanks,
    Mark

    In a definer's rights stored procedure (the default), you only have access to privileges that have been granted directly, not via a role.
    There are two basic reasons for that. First, roles can be enabled or disabled, default and non-default, password-protected, etc. so the set of roles a particular user actually has is session-specific. Oracle needs to know at compile time what privileges the owner of the procedure has. The only way to do that (without deferring the privilege check) is to ignore privileges granted through roles.
    Second, since 99% of privilege management DBAs do involves granting and revoking roles, it's helpful that changing role privileges will never cause objects to be marked invalid and recompiled which can have side-effects on applications. DBAs only need to worry about causing problems on those rare cases where they are granting or revoking direct privileges to users.
    You can create an invoker's rights stored procedure by adding the clause (AUTHID CURRENT_USER). That defer's the security check to run-time but allows the procedure to see privileges granted through roles in the current session. But that means that the caller of the procedure would need to have the CREATE SEQUENCE privilege through the role, not the owner of the procedure.
    And just to make the point, dynamic object creation in PL/SQL is almost always a red flag that there is something problematic in your design. If you are creating sequences dynamically, that means that you'd have to refer to them dynamically throughout your code which means that your inserts would need to use dynamic SQL. That's not a particularly easy or safe way to develop code.

  • How: multiple insert stmt's in Database Express edition SQL commands GUI?

    I have installed the Express 10g version today and played around with it for a while.
    If I go to the SQL commands GUI and enter one insert like this:
    INSERT INTO pageit (PagID, PagParent, PagName, PagActive) VALUES (19, 17, 'Mango tree', 1)
    then it works nicely:
    But if I do this:
    INSERT INTO pageit (PagID, PagParent, PagName, PagActive) VALUES (20, 17, 'Grape trees', 1);
    INSERT INTO pageit (PagID, PagParent, PagName, PagActive) VALUES (21, 16, 'Animals', 1);
    Then it says:
    ORA-00911: invalid character
    Looks like semicolon is not allowed,
    but if I remove the semicolon then it says;
    ORA-00905: missing keyword
    Is there a way to use multiple insert statements in one go in this GUI at all?
    If not, could someone please recommend how I do this.
    I have exported thousands of insert lines from MySql and I would like to get them into my newly created Oracle table without having to type one line at the time in this gui.
    Any suggestions?
    Then if there is a nice WEB GUI like phpmyadmin for Oracle then I would like to know about that to? (Preferably free)

    I've not done a lot with the express edition, so there may be tools I'm not aware of. There is a dedicated Express Edition forum that may be more helpful for some of these questions.
    I would normally use the command-line SQL*Plus to run a script with a large number of SQL statements. I'd generally prefer, though, to get a comma-separated data file from the other system and load that into Oracle using SQL*Loader for efficiency reasons.
    In Oracle, you would normally only want a single database on a single physical machine. I know in SQL Server that what they call a "database" is roughly equivalent to a "schema" in Oracle, which is created by creating a new user.

  • Using Connect within a PL/SQL block

    Hi,
    I have a package, inside that i have many procedures & functions, in one of my procedure, i want to use [connect username/password] within a procedure.
    This procedure is called by our client program (in VC++), they will just call the procedure name with parameters, but the procedure should internally connect to one more user & perform some dba related operations, all these things are done in the procedure only, clint will not be aware of the internal operations.
    I tried to give connect within the procedure,
    it gives an error Invalid SQL stmt while compiling the package. Is there any way to do this.

  • PERFORMANCE BAD WHEN CURSORS ARE USED WITHIN PL/SQL BLOCKS

    There are poor database performance at Oracle 10g
    For some cursor selects, the performance is under Oracle 10g
    significant slower than under Oracle 9i.On a test system (Oracle 9) the
    problem does not reproduce, on the 10g system however always.
    The simple execution of the base select statement was on both
    databases in roughly of the same speed. If however a cursor was defined and
    those executed within a PL/SQL block (without involving the user interface),
    then the time behavior was in accordance with the observed behavior
    behavior on the user interface.
    By adding of the hint first_rows on both machines a
    similar (fast) time behavior can be achieved.
    Conclusion: Something in the (Optimizer) settings of the Oracle-10
    databases must be fundamentally different than that of Oracle 9. Or Oracle
    10 has a real problem. The analysis and solution of this general
    problem seems to me more reasonable than the solution of individual performance
    problems.

    Tks to All

    Hi,
    1. in pl/sql you cannot specify "exec dbms_stats ..." but only "dbms_stats ...".
    2. why execute immediate, just call dbms_stats and pass your parameters

  • Pl/sql block reading reading table data from single point in time

    I am trying to figure out whether several cursors within a PL/SQL block are executed from within a Single Point In Time, and thus do not see any updates to tables made by other processes or procedures running at the same time.
    The reason I am asking is since I have a block of code making some data extraction, with some initial Sanity Checks before the code executes. However, if some other procedure would be modifying the data in between, then the Sanity Check is invalid. So I am basically trying to figure out if there is some read consistency within a PL/SQL, preventing updates from other processes to be seen.
    Anyone having an idea?.
    BR,
    Cenk

    "Transaction-Level Read Consistency
    Oracle also offers the option of enforcing transaction-level read consistency. When a transaction runs in serializable mode, all data accesses reflect the state of the database as of the time the transaction began. *This means that the data seen by all queries within the same transaction is consistent with respect to a single point in time, except that queries made by a serializable transaction do see changes made by the transaction itself*. Transaction-level read consistency produces repeatable reads and does not expose a query to phantoms."

    because the boob who created the table acutally named it

  • Are global temporary tables in Oracle 10.2 behaving differently?

    My procedure is creating and inserting data into a Global Temporary Table (on commit data is preserved). I am running this procedure in two different environments.
    The first environment is running under Oracle 10.2 and after the procedure runs successfully I can not see any data inserted in the GTT.
    When I run the very same procedure in the second environment which runs under Oracle 9.2, it works fine, runs successfully and I can see all rows inserted in the GTT.
    Can someone explain this? What should I do differently in the Oracle 10.2? Any thoughts?
    Thank you very much.

    Hi,
    The following TEMPORARY table is created with the attribute, ON COMMIT DELETE ROWS. This allows an application to load registration entries into the global temporary table and manipulate that data with SQL statements. The data is deleted upon each commit with the clause ON COMMIT DELETE ROWS.
    CREATE GLOBAL TEMPORARY TABLE student_reg_entries
    student_name VARCHAR2(30),
    reg_entries reg_entry_varray_type
    ) ON COMMIT DELETE ROWS;
    Replace ON COMMIT DELETE ROWS with ON COMMIT PRESERVE ROWS to retain temporary table data throughout the database session, regardless of any commits made during that session.
    The following illustrates a PL/SQL block that populates this temporary table with two classes each for two students. It makes no difference how many other applications are currently using this temporary global table for similar purposes. For the code below, two rows are inserted, then a COMMIT, after which a SELECT shows that the table is empty.
    DECLARE
    classes_to_take reg_entry_varray_type :=
    reg_entry_varray_type();
    BEGIN
    classes_to_take := reg_entry_varray_type(
    reg_entry('CS101', 'C' ),
    reg_entry('HST310', 'C' ));
    INSERT INTO student_reg_entries VALUES
    ('John', classes_to_take);
    classes_to_take := reg_entry_varray_type(
    reg_entry('ENG102', 'C' ),
    reg_entry('BIO201', 'C' ));
    INSERT INTO student_reg_entries VALUES
    ('Mary', classes_to_take);
    END;
    This next SELECT returns two rows:
    SQL> SELECT * FROM student_reg_entries;
    Row 1:
    John
    REG_ENTRY_VARRAY_TYPE
    (REG_ENTRY('CS101','C'), REG_ENTRY('HST310','C'))
    Row 2:
    Mary
    REG_ENTRY_VARRAY_TYPE
    (REG_ENTRY('ENG102','C'), REG_ENTRY('BIO201','C'))
    A COMMIT automatically deletes rows making the table available for the next session transaction.
    SQL> COMMIT;
    SQL> SELECT * from student_reg_entries;
    no rows selected

    I have a problem: it seems that some fonts behave different in Photoshop CS than in Illustrator CS on my Windows XP. Where Illustrator opens a vector (Ill) EPS file correct Photoshop shows me wrong characters sometimes: for example: an é becomes a wrong character: Capital O with a stroke through it. Frutiger was used.
    My question is: where does Photoshop behave different reading fonts in comparison with Illustrator?

    Perhaps you forgot to embed the font?
    Here comes an example, using characters  with accents.
    The font is GillSans-Schoolbook. The font or subset is embedded.
    The file extension TXT should be replaced by EPS after downloading.
    The EPS doesn't contain a preview image.
    The file is correctly handled by
    Photoshop CS2 (opened)
    InDesign CS2 (placed)
    Illustrator CS2 (opened)
    PSAlter (PostScript interpreter by Quite)
    All characters with accents are missing in
    Word 2007 (insert graphic)

  • VIM behaves differently after visual selection. (if locale="eo.UTF-8")

    This seems to be a bug in my VIM editor, because never had this problem before.
    But I want to be sure first, by asking here if someone else can reproduce this problem.
    The steps to reproduce are...
    Set your system locale to Esperanto language. Mine → “eo.UTF-8”
    Edit any text file from the CMD, like “$ vim file.txt”.
    Start Visual-line selection mode.
    ...and then, in less than 1 second the selection should be lost, the selected block should “deselect”.
    Once this happens, VIM starts behaving differently. Needing to press ESC more than one time to enter command-mode, becoming unpredictably unresponsive many times while I am editing and entering insert mode, and forgetting the undo history... so I do a “:u” command and the file changes back to its first version, ignoring all the changes history in between.
    The only solution in this case, is closing the file and opening again.
    But once I try to visual-select for first time, it happens again.
    Thanks in advance for your time.

    First visual line selection is deselected almost immediately. But visual selections of any kind do work afterwards.
    Necessity of multiple ESCs is confirmed.
    Thanks a lot for your time, so it seems there is definitely a bug here.
    bernarcher wrote:The history seems to remain intact, however. (But I did not try hard.)
    Correct VIM’s behavior, by doing this:
    Enter insert mode.
    Insert random text.
    Exit insert mode.
    ↑ Repeat some times.
    Perform some Undo actions.
    Should be, one insertion Undo per :u.
    But if I do this after triggering this bug, one undo would ignore all changes made since the “buggy mode” was triggered.
