Installing Firefox on Solaris.

Hello all, I am sorry if this is not the right place to post, but I am extremely new to Solaris and I need help.
I recently installed Solaris 10 on VMWare to check it out and when I fired Firefox up it told me it was out-of-date and that I should upgrade and so I got the tar.bz2 package and I wasn't sure how to install and so I googled... I am quite familiar with using the Terminal in Ubuntu, but of course, they aren't the same. I found a page with someone explaining how to upgrade and I followed his steps by step and when I tried to open it would start to open and then just quit with no error messages or anything. Can someone lead me in the right direction of uninstalling, re installing or upgrading or whatever I need to do to fix this? Maybe a good quick guide for terminal commands as well? Thank you for any help.

Hi, I followed the instruction below and it worked for me ::
This directory contains Solaris builds of Firefox 3.6.16,
which are contributed by Oracle Solaris Desktop Beijing Team.
If you have any problem with these builds, please send email to
desktop dash discuss at opensolaris dot org
Installation:
* Tarball format
Extract the tarball to a proper location[1]
$ bzip2 -dc <tarball basename>.tar.bz2 | tar -xf -
[1]: Make sure there is no firefox directory there before you
extract the tarball, it's not recommended to just overwrite the old
firefox directory.
* Pkgadd format
1, First uncompress the zip file
$ bzip2 -d <zip file basename>.bz2
You will get a package datastream file named <zip file basename>
2, Install the package as root
# pkgadd -d ./<zip file basename>
The default install location would be /opt/sfw/lib/firefox
To Enable Java:
cd /path/to/<install location>/plugins
ln -s /path/to/<jave home>/lib/<sparc|i386>/libnpjp2.so
To Enable Flash Player:
1, Download the Flash Player plugin from
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
2, Extract the tarball and place the files under
/path/to/<install location>/plugins
To Run The Application:
a, Execute the application by specifying the absolute path
$ /path/to/<install location>/firefox
b, Add <install location> to your PATH and execute "firefox"
c, Add the desktop file and start from menu(pkgadd format only)
# cat >/usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop<<EOF
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Encoding=UTF-8
Type=Application
Exec=/path/to/<install location>/firefox
TryExec=/path/to/<install location>/firefox
Icon=/path/to/<install location>/icons/mozicon50.xpm
X-GNOME-DocPath=
Terminal=false
Name=firefox
GenericName=firefox
Comment=firefox
Categories=Application;Network;
EOF
Troubleshooting:
* If you could not start up the application or encounter some
unexpected crash, try to do this,
1, Rename the profile directory("$HOME/.mozilla" for Mozilla suite,
"$HOME/.mozilla/firefox" for Firefox and "$HOME/.thunderbird" for
Thunderbird)
2, Start up the application without importing anything
* For Solaris 10 users, if you have font display problems or crashes with some pages.
Please apply the fontconfig and Freetype patch.
#138353, #119813 (x86)
#138352, #119812 (SPARC)
You can download them at http://sunsolve.sun.com... although, of course, since Sun is no longer, the Sunsolve site is also gone ...

  • How to upgrade/install firefox for Solaris 10 on Sparc 64?

    I just installed Solaris 10 on a SunBlade 100, as soon as I completed the install and I opened Firefox. The system asked me to upgrade to the latest version of Firefox, I downloaded the file to the Desktop, then expanded the file into "/usr/lib/firefox/" overriding the older firefox that was there. Then I created a symbolic link to "/usr/bin/".
    Now, Firefox doesn't work at all, no matter what I do, if I click the icon on the Desktop, or click the Firefox icon on the Launch menu, or if I issue commands from the terminal like "./firefox" nothing works.
    Any ideas?
    Any and all help will be really appreciated.

    Hi guys, I also had this situation and since I was not able to convert the package to a datastream, I downloaded it from http: //www. sunfreeware. com/mozilla .html
    They also provide some readme files that can be of help.
    Once you have the datastream package you can install using pkgadd utility.

  • Firefox for solaris 9

    Hello
    I would like to install a modern web browser like firefox on Solaris 9 Sparc servers.
    These servers run Oracle and other mission critical applications.
    Is there a way to install firefox on Solaris 9 Sparc?
    Where from can I download the browser?
    Netscape is already installed by its not very user friendly.
    If I install this browser, how sure can I be that there won't be any problems whatsoever with the production server.
    Thanks

    You can install Firefox 2.x on Solaris 9 without any problems. It should not affect your production environment.
    IIRC the Firefox 3.x browser requires some libraries which are not available on Solaris 9, which is why you are stuck with Firefox 2.x.
    Sunfreeware have fairly recent firefox packages:
    http://www.sunfreeware.com/mozilla.html
    The Solaris 8 packages works on Solaris 9.

  • How to update Firefox in Solaris 11?

    I installed here successfully Solaris 11.
    When I looked at the Firefox browser it is still v3.6.10
    When I look into the "Help" menu of Firefox on other systems there is a menu entry "Update Firefox" or "Search for updates".
    This is (was) not the case in Firefox v3.6.10.
    How can I update Firefox here?
    Do I really have to manually de-install old (=current) and manually install new version?

    Greetings to All!,
    I have a very limited knowledge working with Solaris. I need to install Firefox 3.5.5 so that I can use a GUI based FTP client. I have downloaded the program but I
    don't know how to install it and I hate to break my system. Please help.

    From where did you download what you have? What format is it in? If you got it from Mozilla, it will be either in 'tar' or 'pkg' format.
    See your system documentation on how to manage these formats.

  • Getting mad trying to install studio11 on solaris 8

    Hello,
    I know I have to install J2RE or J2SE before but every time I try to download J2RE self-extracting archives I never get the same file length neither the same sum. Obviously, the script aborts when checking file integrity.
    I wonder, what I am doing wrong. Here are the results of several attempts under windows and freebsd, using SDM or not. I was unable to install SDM on Solaris for the same reason.

    Well, I gave up trying to get studio11 installed under 5.8
    A mount of a 5.9 /opt is ok.

    I just installed Firefox for the first time and when it is finished installing I tell it to start. It tries and as soon as it does I get a crash report. Every time I click Restrt Firefox it comes up with the same crash error, which is the following:

    I am running this on a Duo Core processor, Intel, Laptop, Windows 7 with 4-gigs of ram. I have never had a problem with other programs crashing like this before.
    Any ideas? I have never used Firefox and after 20 years have decided to try something new.
    Thanks for any help.

    You mean out of this whole community no one knows how to fix this ... I wanted to give Firefox a try, but honestly, I am starting to see why I have not switched from IE, it is stable and I get answers when I post to the Microsoft boards as well as the answer to everything I have ever had an issue with is out there ... what is worse is that I am not the only one with this problem and no one can still help because I am sure us five are not the only ones that have run into this.

  • How do I install Firefox on multiple computers at the same time?

    I work part-time at a school and want to know if there's an efficient way to install Firefox on all the computers in the computer lab, all of which run Windows XP. I also want to change the preferences from the default settings to a custom one for all of the profiles. Is there a way this can be done?

    Please take a look at:

    How do I save and import my bookmarks from another hard drive? When I try to open the installed Firefox on the old drive, it (obviously) opens a browser from the new main drive, free of bookmarks. Is there a way I can save the bookmarks on the old drive without opening a browser?
    The guts of my computer were rearranged and I got a new main hard drive. My old one is still in there and I can get stuff from it, but when I go to the Mozilla folder on the old one, I can't figure out if there's anything I can do to get all my bookmarks from that drive to my new one, where Firefox is newly installed.

    If you open Firefox then Firefox will always use the default profile folder as found via profiles.ini on your system drive.
    You either need to import the file in your current default profile or copy the file to your current profile folder while Firefox is closed.
    Firefox 3 stores the bookmarks and the browser history in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/places.sqlite places.sqlite] and no longer creates an HTML backup by default.
    There are also (five) JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder within the Firefox profile folder.
    You can either copy the file places.sqlite to your [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] or import the most recent JSON backup from the bookmarkbackups folder of that old profile.
    See:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Backing_up_and_restoring_bookmarks_-_Firefox
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
    "Application Data" in XP/Win2K and "AppData" in Vista/Windows 7 are hidden folders.
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders
    Go to: Control Panel > Folder Options > "View" tab > under "Hidden files and folders", select "Show hidden files and folders".
    You may want to un-check the box "Hide extensions for known file types" to see the file extensions of all files.

  • Just installed Firefox 7.0.1 on a Mac running OSX 10.6.8 - the installation Disc icon remians on the desktop and each time I launch, Firefox opens a window asking me to drag the Firefox icon to my Applications folder. How do I get this to go away?

    I have installed the application to my applications folder and everything else is working perfectly. But normally, after you've installed a browser, the istallation disk icon that appears on your desktop can be ejected or deleted without detriment. Mine keeps coming back...

    Make sure that Firefox gets installed properly.<br />
    Open the DMG file and drag the Firefox program to the application folder on your hard drive.<br />
    You shouldn't double-click the Firefox application to run it from the disk image, but drag it out of the DMG folder instead.

  • Since I installed Firefox 3.6.3, every time I open Google Notifier, two Firefox browser windows open.

    I am running Firefox 3.6.3 on my Mac G5 and my MacBook.
    Since I installed Firefox 3.6.3, everytime I open Google Notifier, two Firefox browser windows open. This happens on both of my computers.
    This never used to happen before, in the earlier versions.
    How do I make it so that only one browser window opens?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == I installed Firefox 3.6.3 ==
    == User Agent ==
    Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X 10_4_11; en) AppleWebKit/531.22.7 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Safari/531.22.7

    I got this all screwed up too.
    hmm.. where to start?
    3.6 and 4.0 beta - really aren't intended to play well together.
    As has been mentioned above, they tend to write over each other.
    I managed to get both 3.6.15 and 4.0 beta 12 on the same machine.
    But, I had to do it several times.
    I got lucky by deleting everything Mozilla, then installing 4.0b12, then 3.6.15 - while making sure that each installed into a separate folder.
    I also took care to copy out a couple of BookMark BackUp files - just in case.
    My old 3.6# had become so bloated - and, Unstable - for Me, it was time.
    The bookmarks were all that I was still interested in.
    All the Plugins, Themes, AddOns, etc... had slowed the app to a crawl.
    So, I did as complete a wipe of Mozilla bloat code that I could, including profiles.
    I then did some registry cleaning.
    Then I installed 4.0b12 and 3.6.15.
    I can't open them both at the same time.
    If I open 3.6.15 first, then open 4.0b12 - the beta comes up as 3.6.15.
    If I open 4.0b12 first, then open 3.6.15 - the 3.6 comes up as the beta.
    This has a lot to do with both apps sharing the same default profile.
    I hope to drop down to one app in the near future.
    So, cobbling multiple profiles in order to diddle side by side apps - isn't worth it at this stage.
    For me, I can't open FF 4.0b12 when my virus protection is running. PCTools doesn't like some thing about the way FF4.0 wants to phone home when it opens.
    So, I can't commit to the 4.0b12, yet.
    3.6.15 was crashing on open too - until I uninstalled the feedback addon. - go figure -.
    Also, I can't get the 4.0b12 to start in safe-mode with the PCTools antivirus running.
    At the rater they are going, I don't see 3.6.# going away any time soon.

    When I tried to install Firefox sync it said it was not compatible with firefox 25.0.1.
    Mac 10.6.8 is the most my system can handle.

    Syncing between the Mac and the iphone would be good but is not essential.

    This is disappointing, but thank you very much for your time. This will save me many hours of frustration.
