Installing packages without confirmation

Pretty much what the title says.
I want to write a script that downloads and installs packages without the need to confirm that I want to install those.
I couldn't find anything in the wiki or the man page about this, could it still be done?
Or do I have to submit a feature request?

Oh, I didn't see that at all, sorry about that.
Thank you.

  • HAI (Home Arch Install) - install packages without root account

    HAI, or Home Arch Install, can "install" and run Arch Linux programs from your normal user account. (Even if you don't run Arch Linux at all - see the config file.)
    HAI's design is heavily inspired by Zero Install, but it uses Arch Linux packages instead of a new package format. This means you can make use of Arch's extensive package database, right now.
    HAI follows the KISS and worse-is-better philosophies. HAI is implemented as a set of specialized bash scripts, with under 500 lines of code in total, so it's not that hard to read, understand and extend.
    HAI doesn't really install the packages it downloads - it uses fakechroot and unionfs-fuse to fool the program you run into thinking it's installed in /usr.
    Quick start guide:
    1. Download HAI from http://www.smnd.sk/tomi/hai/hai-1.1.tar.gz . (The address might eventually change, so please don't link to it directly.)
    2. HAI doesn't need system-wide installation. Just unpack it somewhere.
    3. Put this in your ~/.bashrc file: "alias hai=~/your/directory/with/hai". This allows you to run hai without typing the path.
    4. Run "./bootstrap" from HAI's directory. This downloads dependencies HAI itself needs. (You need FUSE already installed, though.)
    5. Try it:
    hai bwm-ng
    hai frozen-bubble
    hai pysolfc pysolfc-cardsets -- pysol
    hai inkscape -- inkscape somefile.svg
    # in general: hai (what packages to install) -- (what program to run)
    HAI comes with a README.txt file. You really should read it, it's short and if you've read this far, you already know most of it.
    I've been working on HAI for two months and it's finally reached a state bug-free and elegant enough that it satisfies my prefectionism. I developed HAI to scratch my own itch, but please tell me if you try HAI, or perhaps even find it useful! I'd also like to know about any bugs you experience or feature requests you might have. If you find something in the documentation that could use clarifying, tell me as well.
    (Update 2010-05-11: hai-1.1 fixes a bug when downloading from AUR and switches from tar to bsdtar, because tar acts up when downloading xz-compressed packages. For now, bsdtar has to be installed on the local system.)

    Oops, didn't notice your reply, tavianator. Thanks for the bug reports!
    vercmp: That's what I get for assuming libalpm won't change its internal layout... it was working at the time of HAI's release. Thanks for the fix.
    rsync: I use it to get the fakechroot PKGBUILD. I could download the whole ABS tree through http, but most of the time it would be a waste... I'll try to think of a compromise.
    Using HAI on distros other than Arch isn't very streamlined, though this is something I hope to improve. The SYSTEM_CHECK in the config file needs changing. (It's a program that checks if a package is already installed on the machine.) This line should work (it was tested on Mandriva, which uses rpm too):
    SYSTEM_CHECK='local sysver; sysver=`rpm -qa | grep "^\(\|lib\)$requestname" | sort | grep -o "[^-]*-[^-]*$" | grep -o "^[^-]*"` || true; [ "$sysver" ] && version-ok "$sysver" && true'
    Update on rsync: The PKGBUILD is in http://repos.archlinux.org/wsvn/package … dl&isdir=1 too, but that link can easily change if Arch switched from websvn to someting else. I'd appreciate a second opinion whether to use rsync or this link.

  • How to install packages from removable media?

    I'm pretty damn sure that i missed some wiki page, but i cannot find it, how do i install packages without an internet connection. I installed on one of my computers, then realized i needed to install the wireless drivers after the install, which i cannot. I can ofcourse reinstall, but i believe there must be a possibility to make pacman install a bunch of packages from USB or a cd. I do have internet at my other computer, so i can download the packages there onto a usb-stick.

    Hi,
    you should try
    pacman -U /path/to/package.pkg.tar.gz
    I haven't tried this but that's the way one would manually install a package build with PKGBUILD and "made" with makepkg.
    Hope that helps.

  • Installing x11 without installing the whole system?

    I did not install x11 when I installed Tiger on my Mac G5. I have now, via a number of updates, moved to version 10.4.10.
    Sadly, when I insert my system install disk it will not let me install x11 without installing the whole system. That is a risky and impractical situation at this point.
    Is there a way to install x11 without installing a whole new system?

    On the Installer Disc One there is an installer named 'Optional Installs.' You can install the X11 software from that package without reinstalling OS X.

  • In arch, can we install krita without koffice?

    Well... just that...
    in arch, can we install krita without all the other apps of koffice?
    Currently I want to try/use features in krita, not the other apps of koffice...
    any idea?

    If someone wants to split koffice and is willing to keep it maintained, we can host the packages + a svn repo for the PKGBUILDs on the server where KDEmod resides...
    Splitting should be easy. Just check the output of configure, at some point it says "Checking if krita should be compiled" for example. At this point you can see every app/component that can be splitted into a single package.
    To split koffice you need to set the DO_NOT_COMPILE shell variable. For KDEmod we split every single app but keep the libs/docs/shared things in a so called base package called kdetoys-base for example. Here is an example of a base package and an inherent splitted one.
    If someone wants to do this, just contact me

  • Install package as dependency of another package

    Suppose you want to install Package X, which depends on Package Y. You also want to install Package Z, which augments Package X, but is not a dependency of Package X. You run:
    pacman -S X Z
    Now suppose that you no longer want Package X on your system. You run:
    pacman -R X
    Package X is removed. Now you can run:
    pacman -Qdt
    To clean up packages orphaned by Package X. Provided nothing else depends on Package Y, Package Y will be removed.
    All is well and good, except Package Z was not orphaned by Package X. Even though Package Z is (in this hypothetical example) useless without Package X, it won't be removed automatically because it was installed with pacman -S.
    So... is there a way to install Package Z as a dependency of Package X such that, when Package X is removed, Package Z will be orphaned if no other packages depend on it?

    Thank you, rwd, that does the trick. Editing the PKGBUILD is quite reasonable when Package X is in AUR, and for official packages, editing /var/lib/pacman/local/X/depends (not Z/depends) works. The downside is that I have to remember that I want Package Z to behave as a dependency of Package X and tweak Package X every time it is updated. So yes, an --asdepof option would be really swell.
    For venky80 and anyone else who may be interested in this, here's a real-world example. Suppose you want to install loudmouth for use with amarok. If you later decide to uninstall amarok, you would like for loudmouth to be automatically uninstalled as well (unless some other package depends on it). loudmouth is not a depedency of amarok (incidentally it is an optional dependency, but this will work with any package that is not a dependency).
    1. Install amarok
    $ pacman -S amarok
    2. Install loudmouth with --asdeps
    $ pacman -S --asdeps loudmouth
    3. Edit amarok's depends file to make it depend on loudmouth
    3a. Open the file in a text editor
    $ nano /var/lib/pacman/local/amarok*/depends
    3b. Add "loudmouth" under the DEPENDS section; e.g.
    %DEPENDS%
    loudmouth
    mysql>=5.1.34
    kdebase-runtime>=4.2
    taglib
    3c. If loudmouth is an optional dependency of amarok (and it is), remove it from the OPTDEPENDS section.
    3d. Save and close the depends file.
    4. Test to see if it worked
    $ pacman -Qtd
    $ # loudmouth should not be listed
    $ pacman -Rs amarok
    $ # loudmouth should be listed

  • Is there a way to install X11 without re-installing OSX?

    I cannot find a way of installing X11 without re-installing OSX.
    I've looked on the cd for the installer but with no luck.
    The X11 installer isn't located in the bundled software installer and X11 will not install with the X11 SDK.
    The retail verson of tiger has an optional istall on the disk but it will not work with intel macs. And the X11 download from apple will not work with Tiger (not even in Rosetta).
    I've found the X11 install option when I restart my MacBook with the install DVD inside and am asked to reinstall Tiger. This doesnt do me any good because i dont want to do a fresh install of tiger just to get X11.
    Does anyone know a way around this issue?
    Please Help!
    MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    On the intel Tiger DVD there is no additional software or other software folers or packages. There is:
    Install Bundled Software (which does not contain X11)
    Install OSX and Bundled Software (which requires you to reinstall OSX to Install X11)
    Xcode Tools Folder (which contains Xcode and Xcode extras but no X11 installer)

  • Using pacman to install packages into a seperate root

    After working with an Arch Linux machine for 1-2 years I switched jobs and was given a Mac, which I've enjoyed so far.
    I would, however, like to switch back to Arch Linux but there's something that I've been able to do on Mac OS X using its unofficial package manager Homebrew (http://mxcl.github.com/homebrew/) which I was wondering if it were possible with pacman.
    Typically you have one installation of Homebrew, at /usr/local, and by running 'brew' (/usr/local/brew) it knows that its root is at /usr/local & looks there for all dependencies & installs packages there. If, however, you install homebrew elsewhere (could be the first or a second installation), for instance ~/sw, then running brew from there will install packages in that root.
    I've found this very useful to install package specific to a project I'm working on (specific vendor & version of DB, specific web server etc) without having to install them globally on my system and at the same time without having to resort to installing everything by hand (including dipendencies).
    Is this possible with Pacman?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dale

    pacman --root /opt/arch32 --cachedir /opt/arch32/var/cache/pacman/pkg --config /opt/arch32/pacman.conf -S base base-devel

  • Are others finding AAMEE 3.0 install packages failing on Macs

    I'm able to create install packages with AAMEE 3.0 without issue.  However, when I go to install the packages on machines (so far, through no automated process), I get an "The installation failed" screen.

    To continue on w/ the original question/problem, I've been having issues, too.  After making my package, I see 2 types of failures.  One has the installer pausing at about 1/8 or so in the progress and the time remaining increases.  This never clears out and you have to force quit the installer.  I've let it sit there and have it climb it to over an hour w/o the progress bar moving.  The other problem involves the failed install which will happen within about 7-10 seconds.  It will go through the progress bar quickly and finish w/ a failed install message.  My packages do have the  "Ignore conflicting process" box checked.
    One thing I noticed that helped me get around this 7-10 second failed install this morning did not make sense to me.  I did 3 machines w/ the Photoshop CS6 package I created by copying the package over ARD to the desktop of the machine and running it.  The 4th machine I copied the same package off of a local server and it would repeatedly fail during the installation (7-10 second failure).  Finally when I copied it via ARD and running it, it did work.  Anybody ever see this?  I'm not doing the ARD Install package feature.  Just a copy.
    Also, any clue on my first type of failure w/ stuck installer?
    Thanks!

  • How do i uninstall applications and their packages without littering trashcan

    how do i uninstall applications and their packages without littering trashcan.
                                                                                                       *sincerly nube*

    OK. That wasn't clear at first. See the following:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
    Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
    Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
    Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
    Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
    Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
    If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
    Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
    There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper 2.0.1
        2. AppDelete 3.2.6
        3. Automaton 1.50
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner 2.1.0
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash 1.8.2
        8. Amnesia
