due to virus had to wipe the disc but we do not have the orginal operating system anymore but have the windows 2000 operating system registration number underneath the computer. How do i get a windows 2000 downloaded and saved ?? I have the sat pro 4600

I'm sorry, but as far as I know, it's not possible to download an operating system. If you lost your recovery CD with the whole factory image, you have to buy a new one from Toshiba or only an operating system and install the system by your own.

1a) Here is very useful article from PCWorld.com. The article is entitled "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" and means just what it says. The article also has links to Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder and legitimate Windows 7 ISOs from Digital River, a licensed distributor of Microsoft software. The article lists "Step 1" as;
"Find your Windows 7 product key: Typically this 25-character alphanumeric string is printed on a sticker affixed to your PC or on documentation included with your PC. Alternatively, you can use a keyfinder program such as Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to pull your product key from the Registry. You need your product key to reinstall Windows."
1b) Using a key finder, however, is only useful if the Windows 7 product key was printed on a sticker (Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity) affixed to your PC, on documentation included with your PC, or sent via email by Microsoft. Assuming your computer came from one of the big brand computer manufacturers... HP, Sony, Dell, Gateway, etc... as most do, it uses a generic "mass activation" OEM SLP key. Trying to use this key by itself isn't going to work. This OEM SLP key needs to be mated with an OEM SLP certificate and an appropriate OEM BIOS with a proper SLIC table.
1c) Here is where ABR Beta With Windows 7 Support comes to the rescue. Follow the "How to use it" section of ABR for Windows Vista for information and instructions on how to use ABR. The steps listed for Vista apply to Windows 7 as well. Perform the "activation backup" to "backup" and save the OEM SLP key and OEM SLP certificate. Save the entire ABR folder to an external location for later use. This will allow you to pre-activate your "clean" Windows 7 install on the computer you pulled the key and certificate from.
1d) Now install Windows 7 from your new "Windows 7" disc or USB stick, following all prompts as needed. Don't enter a Windows 7 product key if request. Also, don't allow Windows to try to auto-activate. Once Windows is fully installed, run ABR "activation restore" to "restore" the previously backed up product key and certificate to the new Windows 7 install. Verify that Windows is activated, repeat "activation restore" if needed.
2) Here is another useful article, this time from SevenForums.com. This arcticle is entitled "Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7" and provides detailed steps required to backup your computer, audit current hardware and software, locate software and drivers, install and activate Windows 7, and create a Windows 7 Backup Image of your fresh install.

Before formatting the hard drive you should have been able to use the HP Recovery Manager to create your recovery discs or perform a system recovery. This is provided the recovery partition wasn't already corrupt or damaged. If the "D:" HP Recovery partition is missing or damaged and you don't have a set of HP Recovery Discs, you will need to use the information in my previous post to get your computer up and running again.
The information in the document referred you to applies to several different "types" of installations;
Using ABRbeta is only needed if you have an active OEM factory SLP (system locked preactivated) installation of Windows. You use ABR to pull the factory key and certificate off the computer, to reuse it on the same computer with a clean Windows install.
If you are just installing Windows and are going to use the Windows 7 product key on the COA on the side of your computer, all you need to do is download the same version of Windows that your key is for and burn the ISO. Now install Windows answering or following all prompts as needed (except do not enter the Windows product at this time... it will be entered later). Once Windows has completely installed, enter the key and activate it. Your Windows 7 OA key should work on a SP1 install without issue.
The only thing I see that could mess things up, is the language of the install. If you are still having trouble activating Windows, please reference the ISO you download and a post a photo of your Windows COA
with the key erased or Xed out.

Windows 2000 has been largely abandoned (and with VERY GOOD reason) why on earth would you want to install that outdated unstable OS? It's plagued with security issues bugs and BSOD issues from being unsupported so long (even when it WAS supported) chances are no drivers were made compatable with that OS for your machine as XP is a totally different monster you likely would not find drivers for 70+% of your hardware. I'd 110% advise against even trying it XP is the oldest supported windows OS anymore an even it is about to lose support very VERY soon (if it hasn't yet already). I can't stress enough how much of a bad idea (and without any advantages by doing so) it would be to even attempt this.

Install windows 7 without bootcamp

Hi everyone I discovered a way to install windows 7 without boot camp, i'm not sure if its also applicable with original windows 7 cd, but here goes, I wanted to install windows 7 completely in my optical bay hdd, i couldn't because you cannot boot up with external super drive...
Step 1: take out primary os x lion hdd out and put your secondary hdd in there
Step 2 put the super drive in its place
Step 3 install os x lion in an external drive (don't use your primary drive) you only need recovery HD
Step 4 run recovery HD from external drive
Step 5 press the apple logo and restart system
Step 6 boot up pressing the option key
Step 7 there should be a windows cd and a EFI cd
Step 8 click the windows cd
Step 9 install windows 7
Step 10 install the apple drivers
Step 11 put the clean windows 7 drive in the optical bay
Step 12 put the primary drive in the primary sata slot
Turn on and enjoy
I'm going to try this with vista and xp whenever i have time and create the ISO file...

Actually I just bought a new Dell Latitude E6420. Installed 8GB of RAM, a 120GB Intel SSD, moved the 750GB Seagate drive I originally installed to a optical by caddy. Nothing junky about that PC.
But if you read this forum you will see a ton of posts about junky Apple hardware.
There is nothing superior about the Mac. It is a computer. It reads and writes 1s & 0s. It is now based on the i386 (x86) plateform/architecture.
Just to let you know both PCs and Macs use the Exact Same Hardware. The 8GBs of RAM and the 750GB HDD I installed in the Dell were originally in a 13" MBP I had and returned.
About the only real difference between the 2 is the HDD format and file structure. Windows uses a registry, which is really a grouping of 3 different files. Mac's use .plist files which can number in the 10s to god knows what number. Apps on a Mac are not just one file or one group of files all in the same directory, kind of like Windows where files of different types get put in different folder all over the hard drive and OS structure.
Ok I'm done with that subject.
I have not had any viruses or trojans or whatever on any of my PCs for over a decade and I haven't used any anti virus software for over 3 years.
I like the Mac for somethings and I like PCs, I'm not a Mac or a PC snob. But I do have Windows installed on my Mac computers and if I could, easily, I would have OS X installed on my Windows based hardware. But Steve Jobs has seen fit to make that almost impossible. If he hadn't no one would buy his hardware.

I'm an independent developper and absolutely need to install several operating systems on my *Satellite L300-16M (PSLB0E)* : it's very important for me because I've to check working of piece of software under every environment for real (not using solutions like VMware, for example).
Well, so, at this time, I've done an Acronis TrueImage backup of original full HDD, then deleted original WinRE and Data partitions, reduced and moved at beginning of disk the Vista partition... and installed System Commander 8 to prepare my future multi-boot. At this time, all sounds right : Vista works perfectly !
Also, note I've configured SATA in Setup BIOS to be in "Compatibility" mode ; just because I don't need AHCI in my type of use !
Second stage : now, *I have to install Windows 2000 Pro (SP4) FR*. Of course, I'm aware that the blocking point is the SATA/AHCI driver, wich is absent in the Win 2K CD... So, I've just made a new CD integrating these drivers using nLite ; at this time, I've tried using driver from Toshiba's XP Drivers page and Intel site about Intel 82801 HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controlleur (ICH8M).
But it doesn't work completely : the Win 2K install starts... All drivers are well loaded (including the AHCI ones) and just after this loading step, I get a black screen with just a blink cursor at top left of screen... indefinitively :-(
I've also tried to switch SATA to "AHCI" mode in BIOS and it's the same.
So, what to do next ?
Do I've used the wrong AHCI drivers ? Do I need to incorporate the maximum of Toshiba Drivers (about chipset, display, sound) in the Windows 2000 install CD using nLite ? I mean until the CD capacity is not reached.
Is there a way or tutorial to install Windows 2000 somewhere ? For XP, I think it will more easy because SP3 seems to support AHCI, but, just now, my problem is to install Windows 2000 : even if Microsoft wants to leave-it, there are a lot of professionals who still use-it... And my job, as developer, is to do my software works on this OS too ! *I really need to find a way to install it on this computer !!!*

About all driver ? Oh, in fact, I'll try to see if the XP ones work and if not I'll have a not-fully working Win 2K, but it will be enough for me to test my programs... I hope, at least, I'll be able to do display driver work !
Well, seeing I don't succeed using Intel/Toshiba drivers and nLite, I'm trying at this time to go through another way, installing Win2K in a VMware, then forcing install of the Toshiba AHCI driver, then doing a TrueImage of this and restauring in the Toshiba ! I'll see...
However, if someone has an idea, don't hesitate.
EDIT : I'm now at the step to try to force the Store Manager driver from Toshiba (the one given for this model under XP), launching iata_cd.exe and after some second I see a message saying that this OS (Windows 2000) is not supported by this driver... So, from now, I clearly know why this driver failed when I gone through the nLite-customized Win2K CD install directly on the Satellite :-(
So, this change the game : does it exist a Windows 2000 compatible driver for the Satellite L300-16M's AHCI Controller ??? This is the question !

So here is what I did step by step:
1. make partition via disk utility and format using MS-DOS / FAT
2. Insert windows cd and restart
3. Hold C when it's booting up
4. It goes right away to windows installation, and when I see my partition, I choose the partition i made from disk utility
5. On the "where do you want to install Windows" menu (with many partitions on the screen where you supposed to choose which one to install windows), I can't install windows yet, so I click Drive Options, then Format, but after I format the partition, I still can't click Next
Some said that I need to make the partition via disk utlity using NTFS, but I still can't install
It stucks on the "where do you want to install Windows" menu
Is it because the windows 8?
Or is it because Mountain Lion won't let you do this anymore?
All I want is to make 3 partitions since bootcamp limit only 2 partitions max.
I did successfully install windows 8 without any issue using bootcamp, but then again it was only 2 partitions.
I use VMware, and it takes your memory like crazy

I can see that free memory is around 2GB, and after I hit VMware to run windows, memory left is around 30MB

You're posting in the PowerPC processor-based iMac Forum, so I'm assuming that your iMac doesn't have an Intel processor. If it is a PowerPC model, you can't install Windows 2000, unless you were doing so in conjunction with an old version of VirtualPC. That (now-discontinued) third-party program enabled a Mac's PowerPC processor to emulate the Windows environment. What model iMac do you have and what OS version is it running? Microsoft has marketed Mac-compatible versions of its "Office" software for years, that include Excel. Office 98 Macintosh Edition is the oldest version that would run on a first-generation G3 iMac, and Office X was the first version designed to run on OS X. If you have an Intel processor-based iMac, you should post in the Intel iMac Forum. I would think you'd have problems trying to install Windows 2000 on an Intel iMac, simply because the drivers for more recent hardware (like the Core 2 Duo processor) would not be present in the CAB files.

Boot Camp does not support Windows 2000 - it might work sort off, might not perform well if at all.
You can run Windows 2000 in a virtual machine using something like Parallels for Mac, or VMware Fusion.
To install Windows 2000 in a virtual machine you will need the original Windows 2000 Install Media with a useable Product Key.

About your screenshots:
With the first screenshot you not enabling the local administrator. Is that what you want?
With the second screenshot your only creating a user account and not adding it to the local administrators group. That would need an additional action like this
cmd.exe /c net localgroup /add administrators User01.

Portege 3440 - Can't install Windows 2000

I have problem with installation Windows 2000 on Portege 3440.
I was running installation Windows 2000 with FDD USBB (with driver for CD-ROM PCMCIA) and CD-ROM PCMCIA. All was ok to moment when I entered to winnt" on q.
During installation without partition on HDD was appeared information on blue background: "could not find a place for a swap file. With partition (FAT32, 6GB): " Setup was unable to install Windows Boot Loader. Ensure that your C: drive is formatted and that drive is not damaged." I was tried with three other HDDss.
What I must do to install this system? (Same users don't have such communiques)

so your harddisk isn't bootable ...?
Most likely there is a problem with the MBR ( = master boot record )
Do the following :
*Download BootIt NG ( free, use google ) and transfer it to a bootable diskette
*Start up with your FDD, run ( do not install ! ) BootIt NG, delete the MBR, make a newMBR and format your HD to fat32
then :
*start-up with the fdd-DOS-bootdisk and transfer the DOS-system files to the HD with the command : *sys c:*
*remove all peripherals ( the fdd and the pcmcia-cdrom ) and reboot, your PC should boot with the DOS-files
*if so : transfer the i386 dir from the W2K-install-CD to the HD again ( may be done on another PC )
*boot again with the HD, with no external drives connected
*go to the i386 dir and start winnt.exe ;
commands :
*cd i386*
*winnt*
if this method isn't succesfull, I presume there must be a hardware-problem with the HD

They are both right. Hatter's reply would be perfect if you were at a college or university that provides Windows 7 to students through a site license. Some schools provide the physical media - a bootable installer DVD. Other schools provide a download of a special installer package usually in the form of a Windows executable - filename.EXE. Unfortunately, you cannot use it on a Mac. You have to run it on a Windows computer in order to extract the ISO disc image. Some schools can just provide you with the ISO disc image. Once you have the ISO image on your Mac you can burn it to a blank DVD-R that can be used to install Windows 7 on your Boot Camp partition.
An alternative to Boot Camp is to use Parallels, or VM Fusion, or VirtualBox to create a virtualization of Windows on the Mac that runs concurrently with OS X. You also have the advantage that VM software will install Windows from the ISO disc image instead of needing it burned to a DVD. VirtualBox is freeware.

As you know, Windows will contact Microsoft and validate all your hardware aspects with them. If you don't validate you don't get security updates.
So if this copy of Windows is validated on another machine it will expire and you'll have to pay for a serial.
Another alternative to Bootcamp if you don't need full performance and/or if you have light needs and want to run Windows at the same time as OS X in a window, you can consider Parallels, VMFusion or free VirtualBox as a virtual machine program.
Most virtual machine software will take the Bootcamp Windows and make a virtual machine OS file to run Windows in OS X with. Since Windows is on the same machine, it doesn't matter if it's two (or more) copies when validating.
You can also forsake the DVD burning if your going to only use a virtual machine program, simply point the program at the ISO file and install it.
