Instant Client RPMs fail to "provide"

The instantclient rpms have a fairly slim list of things that they provide:
rpm -qa | grep oracle-instantclient | xargs rpm -q --providesoracle-instantclient-jdbc = 10.1.0.3-1
oracle-instantclient-basic = 10.1.0.3-1
oracle-instantclient-devel = 10.1.0.3-1
oracle-instantclient-sqlplus = 10.1.0.3-1
In fact they don't seem to provide any of the automatic dependencies (sonames) that should be generated by "find-provides".
This has the unfortunate side-affect of requiring that I force the installation of any rpms that were built without somehow short-circuiting "find-requires".
Is there a known workaround for this? I currently have an rpm that provides things that should be provided by the instantclient rpms, but this is clearly a hack.
Here's an example of the issue:
sudo rpm -Uvh tora-oracle-1.3.14.1-2.i386.rpm perl-DBD-Oracle-1.16-1mb.noarch.rpm error: Failed dependencies:
libclntsh.so.10.1 is needed by tora-oracle-1.3.14.1-2
libclntsh.so.10.1 is needed by perl-DBD-Oracle-1.16-1mb
Thanks for any help.
-Kim

This is a nice religious issue. File-based dependancies cause, IMO, more problems than they solve. So I don't generally support them in packages I build (AutoReqProv=no in the specfile). It would appear that tora-oracle and perl-dbd-oracle are built with file-based requirements.
The best answer, I think, would be to migrate an explicit provides/requires setup for instantclient and tora-oracle/perl-dbd-oracle. That way we avoid the file-based dependancies without causing the breakage we see here.

  • Can't find example oci makefile with instant client

A couple of references indicate that Instant Client comes with an example make file. Where is it?
I've installed all the instant client rpm files, including the 'developer' file. But I can't find the example makefile. The 'developer' rpm file is described on the download web page as follows:
*Instant Client Package - SDK: Additional header files and an EXAMPLE MAKEFILE for developing Oracle applications with Instant Client
So far I can't find the example makefile. I see the header files and some shared library (.so) files but no example makefile.
Anybody know how to find the example makefile?
Anybody have any pointers on how to make OCI programs on an instant client system? My programs already run on another system. The other system has a full blown Oracle development environment instead of instant client.
I am trying to make the programs on a RedHat enterprise linux 4 system (actually a clone of RHEL4 called centos4).
    thanks,
    David
    xyz

Never mind. Don't bother. I think I found it.
I forgot that it's not called "Makefile", "makefile", or anything that you might ordinarily think to look for. It's called demo.mk instead.

  • Failed to install php-oci8 with instant Client for linux 64

    Hello,
I have a 64-bits Linux box with RHEL4, and PHP version has been upgraded from 4.3.9 to 5.1.6. I try to make the connection to remote oracle server.
I download instantclient-basic-linuxppc-10.2.0.2-20060327.zip , and follow the instruction to
    install it.
But when i try to install php-oci8*.rpm, no matter which i use:
    php-oci8-5.1.6-1.el5.i386.rpm or php-oci8-4.3.9-2.2.el4.i386.rpm
The installation always failed due to dependencies errors with oracle instant client.
I also tried with some other packages like: php-oci8-4.3.9-3.el4.x86_64.rpm
All my tries gave me dependency errors.
    sometime like:
    error: Failed dependencies:
    libclntsh.so.10.1 is needed by php-oci8-5.1.6-1.el5.i386
    oracle-instantclient = 10.2.0.3 is needed by
php-oci8-5.1.6-1.el5.i386And I cannt find the right RPM for oracle instant client for linux 64 bits box, and php-oci8 5.1.6 64 bits.
I have been trying on this problem for more than one week, and so frustrated. I will appreciate if I can be guide on this issue.
    Thanks in advance!

    For me, the page ...

    ... currently says ...
"An error occurred while processing the request. Try refreshing your browser. If the problem persists contact the site administrator"
But, with the direct URL to the ZIP, which failed to download before ...
    http://download.oracle.com/otn/nt/oracle10g/10201/10201_companion_win32.zip
... I was able to download it just now.

  • Availability of RPM Linux x86-64 10.2 instant client

    good morning,
an increasingly important platform for us is Linux x86-64 (actually RedHat Enterprise Linux 4 x86-64), the instant client is available only in zip packaging. Could you indicate whether and approximatically when it could be made available in .rpm package.
It is very important for our deployment on all of the client machines.
I thank you a lot in advance for your time and answer,
    eric
PS: on RHEL3 x86 platform, we use the RPM version of the 10.2 Linux x86 and this is very convenient. We would reproduce the same ease of deployment for RHEL4 x86-64

  • I'm trying to distribute a DB Application using the Instant Client provided

    Hi!!
I'm trying to distribute a DB Application using the Instant Client provided by Oracle.
I've checked the FAQ of Oracle and says the Instant Client supports all existant versions of Oracle.
But I've also seen in another posting that the oci.dll needs the same Oracle version file it was created with.
I need to distribute an application that provides all the 8i, 9i and 10g versions.
Do I have to distribute the oci.dll for each version?
I just wanted to check if this was true.
One more question, when I uncompress the Instant Client, many files appear from which
I only left oci.dll, oraocci11.dll and oraociei11.dll and erased them all, but the program
    still works. Is it ok?
    thanx

I am not sure what you mean if you say that you "need to distribute an application that provides all the 8i, 9i and 10g versions".
If you mean that you want your application to be able to access Oracle Databases of versions 8, 9 and 10, then you can use Instant Client 10.2.0.4 which is able to connect to all of them.
If your application does not need more than the three DLLs you mention to run, that should be fine.

I don't understand your step 7 (the first step 7, actually).
What is that unixODBC-2.2.14-linux-x86-32.tar.gz, where did it come from, and why are you doing all that?
unixODBC should be installed after step 5.
I guess that that is the cause of your problem.
isql is not linked against readline at all on my RHEL 5 system.
Do you notice any improvement after removing the files from that tar.bz file?

Something is changing where . is.

  • Using SQLDriverConnect with special characters in password fails, same info with ODBC (Oracle instant client) works fine

    Hi,
on a windows 2008 machine that has the Oracle instant client 11_1 installed (11.01.00.06) i am calling SQLDriverConnect in the following way:
    std::string str = "Driver={Oracle in instantclient11_1};Dbq=//10.10.101.66:1521/orcl;;Uid=myUser;pwd=a;b";
    odbcRc = SQLDriverConnect(hdbc, NULL, (SQLTCHAR*)str.c_str(), str.size(), (SQLTCHAR*)szConnStrOut, 1024, &cbConnStrOut, SQL_DRIVER_NOPROMPT)) == SQL_ERROR);
as long as the password contains no special chars (namely semicolon) it works fine. but when I try to use special chars in the password It stops working, with an invalid username/password error.
State: 28000 Native error: 1017 Message: [Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
i tried different variations of adding " (\") over the password, over the entire pwd=a;b or braces { but nothing seems to work.
the thing is that using ODBC works! what I did was:
open ODBC, go to System DSN tab, add "Oracle in instantclient11_1", then fill the following information:
    Data source name: Anything
    TNS Service Name: //10.10.101.66:1521/orcl
    User ID: myUser
then i press test connection, enter the password "a;b"
    and it works!
I cannot figure out what's my problem.
    Thanks,
    Roy.

I've created your test table in my Oracle database using this extra character and I'm able to describe it properly.
    SQL> desc test;
    Name Null? Type
    ATTIVITÀ VARCHAR2(40)
My character set being used is:
    SQL> select * from v$nls_parameters;
    NLS_CHARACTERSET
    WE8ISO8859P15
    NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET
    AL16UTF16
    NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS
    BYTE
So as long as it doesn't work for you in your native Oracle database I don't think it would work with DG4ODBC. So yes, it would be best to log a service request so that the Oracle database support can check out the NLS issue.
Edited by: kgronau on Sep 28, 2011 9:21 AM
To be complete here the describe of the MySQL table native and using DG4ODBC:
    mysql> create table TEST (attività Varchar(40));
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)
    mysql> desc TEST;
    ---------------------------------------------------+
    | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra |
    ---------------------------------------------------+
    | attività | varchar(40) | YES | | NULL | |
    ---------------------------------------------------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)
    SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.2.0 Production on Wed Sep 28 09:20:17 2011
    SQL> desc "gateway"."TEST"@MYSQL_DG4ODBC_EMGTW_1122_DB;
    Name Null? Type
    attività VARCHAR2(80)
So in general it should work.

  • OCIEnvCreate fails with -1 using Instant Client 10.2.0.1 on Windows XP

I have a working application (using the full Oracle install) and I'm trying to see if I can get it to work using the instant client. I installed the client, changed my path and rebooted. According to the instant client how to install - it should just work but then if everything worked like it was documented then lots of support folks wouldn't have jobs. The only parameter I'm setting is the OCI_THREADED flag. The database is on a different server - but that shouldn't matter I'm not getting that far. I am logged into an administrator account on the client box - so I'm not sure what else could be wrong. Also if anyone knows why we always seam to need administrator accounts that would be a great piece of info too.

It should work if you follow the instructions on the instant client page on OTN:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/oci/instantclient/index.html
Are you able to connect to SQL Plus after setting up instant client ?

The 10.1.0.3 Linux Instant Client SDK was posted on OTN today. See

You can now use Instant Client to compile PHP. You need to modify
PHPs configuration scripts first. One suggested change is given in

  • Instant Client with SQLServer2005 Linked Server

I have successfully installed Instant Client 11.2.0.1.0 on my Windows Server2008. I am able to create an ODBC data source selecting the driver "Oracle in instantclient_11_2". I have also been able to link tables from Access to Oracle. I can logon to Oracle through SQLPlus and execute a query against the Oracle database. I am unsure how to set a Linked Server object in SqlServer 2005. When I use "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers" and supply the Product - DBName and Data Source - ODBC data source previously created here is the error I receive:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
"The linked server has been created but failed a connection test. Do you want to keep the linked server?"
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "DB1".
OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "DB1" returned message "Specified driver could not be loaded due to system error 1114 (Oracle in instantclient_11_2).". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7303)
    Thanks!

Although the 10.1.0.3 instant client for windows doesn't appear to be "officially out", if I try to download
http://download.oracle.com/otn/nt/instantclient/instantclient-basic-win32-10.1.0.3.zip and similar files, the files do exist.
Unfortunately this version still can't connect to my corporate Oracle database:
    Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.6.0.0, 64 bit - Production
    With the Partitioning option
    JServer Release 8.1.6.0.0 - Production
Oh well, back to a full client install of Oracle 9i.
Perhaps the official release when its documented on the Instant Client download page will work.

  • Instant Client 10.1.0.5 and ORA-12640 with External Authentication

I am using v10.1.0.5 of Instant Client on Windows 32bit. I have hit bug 5114330 (ANO: ORA-12640 authentication adapter initialization fails if Operating System User does not have admin rights). This was fixed in patch 12 of 10.1.0.5. I copied the updated files from patch 28 that related to the instant client files and I am still hitting the same problem. How do I patch my instant client install to overcome this bug? Using v10.2 of instant client is not an option as it is not compatible with our application.
    Kind regards,
    Steve

I guess that if you know what you are doing, that approach should work fine; the "standard procedures" are there to guide people who have little experience and to provide a cookbook for how to do it.
I am not sure about version 10.1, but in Instant Client 10.2 everything except for the Instant Client shared library (in 10.1 that is oraociei10.dll) is the same as the regular client. The Instant Client shared library contains messages and similar, so probably has no influence on a code bug as you experience it.
What I would do in your case is to install the regular client on a test machine, apply the patch there and see if the problem is fixed there.
If not, you have a better case for Oracle support, because they understand the regular client much better.
If it works there, replace the Instant Client shared libraries with the files from the regular client and see if it works.
In the case that the error persists, I guess there's no way around a Service Request, because nobody except for Oracle can look into the code.
    Yours,
    Laurenz Albe

  • Please help me to debug a bug for instant client on linux x86-64

I am a c junior programmer, I wrote a c demo based on <Call Interface Programmer's Guide>,but i found failed sometimes and successful somtimes when i run my demo on linux x86-64.
I wondered why it was failed sometimes and successful sometimes, so i used command strace to debug my demo.
I found my demo was failed when called function getsockopt  whose third argument was negative. The following code:
    getsockopt  (5, SOL_SOCKET, SO_SNDBUF, [-8683868481690533888], [4]) = 0
my demo run successful when the third argument of function getsockopt was positive. The following code:
    getsockopt(5, SOL_SOCKET, SO_SNDBUF, [4636081913715490816], [4]) = 0
I downloaded rpm package of instant client for linux x86-32 and installed, the same demo worked perfectly on linux x86-32.
Did instant client for linux x86-64 has a bug?
    any advise would be great.
    Thank you!

    thanks.
I have solved this problem that result in my c demo.
I was a wrong way to use this function OCIBindByName. I ignored it's Indicator Variables must be 0 , -1 or -2.

  • Updated Instant Client 11.2 for Linux 64 bit is on OTN

The 11.2 Instant Client for Linux 64bit has been updated on http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/oci/instantclient/htdocs/linuxx86_64soft.html
It is now at the same patch level as 32 bit.

I just tried to download these as RPMs. I was able to download the basic rpm but the sqlplus rpm and supplemental jdbc rpms failed. Instead of getting a prompt to save the file, content was displayed by the browser (binary content). It appears as is the mime type was not set correctly?
